Lürssen Group to purchase the Peene shipyard

December 19, 2012

The respected German luxury yacht builder, Lürssen Group, has been selected as the buyer of the Peene shipyard in Wolgast, as decided by the insolvency administrator, Berthold Brinkmann, in a meeting of the creditor committee. This decision is subject to approval by the creditors holding liens on the property.

The purchase agreement has already been concluded. As of May 1, 2013, the Lürssen Group will acquire the compact shipyard with its repair and new construction area. The purchase is also subject to approval by the Federal Cartel Office. The purchase price is less than 20 million euros.

Berthold Brinkmann: “Lürssen offered the best purchase price. Aspects particularly appreciated were the skill of the workforce and the know-how accumulated by the company, a special shipyard for naval and government agency vessels. The many years of successful cooperation, for instance when building the F125 frigate, and the trust gained from that also played a role in terms of the Lürssen Group’s decision to buy the company.”

The Lürssen Group has pledged to make offers for permanent employment to 285 people, as well as offers for 75 additional positions for employment limited to 24 months. In addition, all 65 trainees of the Peene shipyard will be taken on and their training will be continued.

The Lürssen Group is purchasing the buildings for the compact and repair shipyard but not the adjacent properties to the north and south, which do not belong to the main shipyard. They will be sold separately by the administrator.

Several interested parties from Germany and abroad are in talks with the administrator, Berthold Brinkmann, concerning the Volkswerft Stralsund shipyard.

Negotiations between the administrator and the DFDS shipping company are in the final stages regarding the anticipated order for two RORO special vessels. Today, the creditor committee declared itself in favor of the administrator’s recommendation that the two special vessels be built at the Volkswerft. Also, at the request of DFDS, the project will be supported by Wolfgang Stammer, the former managing director of Volkswerft Stralsund GmbH whom Berthold Brinkmann recruited to his team in September 2012 as senior advisor.

In the meantime, the operating company “Stralsunder Schiffbaugesellschaft mbH” was founded with its headquarters at An der Werft 5 in Stralsund. The partner is IMG Ingenieurtechnik & Maschinenbau GmbH (Rostock), and the managing directors are Reinhart Kny and Stefan Säuberlich. The Stralsunder Schiffbaugesellschaft will operate on behalf of the administrator within a contract for services framework.

The employees from the transfer company will be hired for a limited time. The managing directors are negotiating a tariff for the employees with the union IG Metall. As soon as the contract with DFDS is completed and production at the Volkswerft Stalsund shipyard is up and running again, the operating company will become active on behalf of the administrator with approximately 300 shipbuilders.

New agent for Sevenstar Yacht Transport in Thailand

December 18, 2012

Chris Jongerius, based in a beautiful Asian yacht charter destination – Phuket, has become a new agent of Sevenstar Yacht Transport in Thailand.

Richard Klabbers, Managing Director of Sevenstar Yacht Transport announced: “Sevenstar’s presence in Asia is fast-growing with an increasing amount of yachts cruising the exotic waters of Southeast Asia. We are therefore pleased to nominate a highly service and safety oriented partner, Chris Jongerius, as our agent in Thailand.”

Chris Jongerius is the owner of the Andaman Sea Club (ASC), a well-known bareboat and skippered yacht charter company and winner of the 2011 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence. ASC is located in Phuket, centre of the booming yacht scene of Southeast Asia.

“I am proud to be welcomed in the team of Sevenstar Yacht Transport,”  said Chris Jongerius, “We have a reputation for excellent customer service in common with Sevenstar Yacht Transport. Together we are able to offer a unique package. As Asia’s yachting industry is quickly developing, this is a timely start and we are well positioned for the future.”

There are many advantages of shipping a yacht instead of sailing or motoring it across oceans. It saves time, manpower and, especially with ever-rising fuel costs, a substantial amount of money. It also decreases wear and tear, as well as engine hours. Certain risks are eliminated. Though it is neither a pleasant thought nor a regular occurrence, piracy and waterborne crime are not unheard of in many popular crossing routes. Another consideration is the wide variety of destinations worldwide; there is just not enough time to reach them all in a lifetime. Why not ship a yacht to the next cruising destination?

“Sevenstar Yacht Transport extends your horizon in a safe and cost-controlled way”, Chris concludes.

New Dates for Singapore Yacht Show 2013 Extended Due To Popular Demand

December 18, 2012

The Singapore Yacht Show will kick off one day earlier in 2013, permitting exhibitors to make the most of the mounting momentum of luxury yachting in Asia. Following initial requests from several important local exhibitors, it was unanimously agreed by participants as well as stakeholders that the event should now be allowed to start on Thursday, April 18 and should last until Sunday, April 21, 2013, at ONE°15 Marina Club, Sentosa Cove.

Andy Treadwell, managing director of the Singapore Yacht Show, says his team acknowledges the high cost and logistical effort of bringing a vessel and an exhibition team to a Yacht Show, and the date extension will allow both exhibitors and visitors to maximise the unique networking opportunity the show presents. “Extending by a day to the more normal four days allows the exhibitors to enjoy maximum exposure to this very important emerging yachting and boating market, and for new buyers to gain full insight into the luxury marine leisure lifestyle,” he says.

Russell Morris, managing director of American super-builder Palmer Johnson echoes this enthusiasm, explaining that the company sees Asia as an important, long-term market: “The Singapore Yacht Show is an ideal platform for us to interact with Asia’s new wealth. We are looking forward to seeing the event continue to grow and prosper.”

Now heading into its third year, the Show is already attracting more superyacht, luxury boat and car brands than ever before.

Tailored to Asia’s rapidly-increasing community of ultra-high net worth individuals, the elite event will also next year incorporate a fine art exhibition, a supercar show, and a VIP gala evening at the fabulous new W Singapore – Sentosa Cove. There will also be a whole host of evening parties and social events both on board the participating yachts and in the newly-opened, ultra-chic bars and restaurants that now line the palm tree-dotted boardwalks surrounding the show.

Some 250 key industry players will attend the 5th Asia Pacific Superyacht Conference on the two days preceding the show, Tuesday April 16 and Wednesday 17. The event’s organisers have also just announced the inaugural Singapore Private Jet Forum which will run alongside the superyacht industry conference. These two Business-to-Business events will be followed by a one-day Luxury Summit, held in conjunction with show partners Robb Report, on Friday April 19 at the W Singapore-Sentosa Cove.

“For six days, there will be a concentration of key people meeting and discussing the luxury leisure lifestyle industries emerging in Asia.  As far as we know this will be the first time such a series of complementary events will be held in South East Asia. There is no doubt in our minds, as organisers, that such a synergetic gathering will have a tremendous impact, and help drive business to the show,” continues Mr Treadwell.

Major international shipyards are unanimous in touting the significance of the Singapore Yacht Show to the global luxury yachting industry. Jan-Bart Verkuyl, sales director of Feadship, which exhibited the magnificent motoryacht Helix last year, says Asia has been a focus for the company for many years. “This year we made a bigger commitment to the market by completing an Asian “roadshow” with M/Y Helix – including attending the Singapore Yacht Show. The strategy worked very well for us, with the sale of two 45-meter Feadships to Asian clients as a result.”

Free internet and service improvements for Super Yacht Berth users at Auckland’s Viaduct Marina

December 14, 2012

The premium central Auckland superyacht marina, Viaduct Marina, will provide its Super Yacht Berth users with a unique opportunity to go online for free from next week. Viaduct Marina, situated at the foot of Auckland’s CBD, will join the nearby Silo Park marina to be the first marinas in New Zealand to provide hard wired internet.

The superyacht marina specialises in accommodating superyachts and maintains fifty berths between 20m and 60m to a controlling depth of 4.5m and the introduction of free internet is just one of a number of recent service developments as it gears up for one of its busiest summer seasons ever.

Over the last month 15 of the marina’s pontoons have been extended 15 metres, new steel piles lodged and four foot high pedestal boxes installed with individually metered power supplies.

Marina Manager Alex Atkinson says Auckland already has a strong reputation for quality hospitality for boat owners, captains and crew and the new additions will make their stay that much more enjoyable. “We’re delighted to be able to offer free internet for berth users to plug into as we appreciate that Auckland is a long way for many of visiting clientele to come and it’s important that they are connected whilst they’re here.”

“Coupled with the improvements to the berths themselves, we’ve greatly increased our capacity to take on larger vessels that can come and experience all we have to offer at this South Pacific port whether it’s the pristine islands and maritime playground of the Hauraki Gulf or the refit and service facilities.”

“All Super yacht berths in the marina are fully booked into March however bookings are still being taken in case of unexpected vacancies. The marina is now in first class condition and we have some more exciting developments to come in 2013!”

EXA Ltd. – new partner for Wider Yachts

December 14, 2012

The Italian luxury yacht manufacturer, Wider Yachts, is delighted to present its partnership with EXA Ltd., a company that refers to Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Genting Group, a top South Asian entrepreneurial corporation. The operation brings an increase in capital, which means founder partners, Tilli Antonelli and Paolo Favilla, as well as new partner EXA Ltd. will each hold 50% of Wider. The futher resources resulting from this operation will contribute to the development of the company’s strategic plan, in accordance with the guidelines set down by Tilli Antonelli.

Two years after it was founded, and after having launched its 42′ yacht, Wider is currently working its way through the steps of its strategic plan. The next stage in its development of high performance, high technology, medium-sized day cruisers is the 32’ and the company entered the displacement sector by launching the 150’ superyacht at the end of 2011. Moreover, presentation of a range of yachts measuring 30 to 50 metres has been planned for spring 2013.

The Wider evolution provides for products created for an exclusive, highly demanding  clientèle with extremely high standards of quality, both regards the layout and design design. The team flanking Tilli Antonelli will also involve architects and engineers who have made Italian goods famous all over the world. The new units will all be built in Italy and respect the highest tradition of our shipbuilding industry.

“I decided to back Wider as I was impressed both with its course of development and its ability to establish itself on the international market with a completely innovative, technologically cutting-edge product despite the difficult economic situation,” declared Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay. “The choice of investing in a streamlined company, able to respond quickly to market demand in terms of both product and style, is also tied to the acknowledgement of the sheer value of Italian-made goods in terms of technological expertise, innovation and design and the in-depth experience of founder Tilli Antonelli,” concluded Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay.

“I’m extremely honoured to have reached an agreement with such an important entrepreneur, who strongly believes in Wider’s development and know-how, choosing to invest in rather than purchase the company,” declared Tilli Antonelli, President and CEO of Wider. “I also believe that Wider’s values are able to respond perfectly to the increasing development potential of Asian markets, within the sphere of leisure yachting,” he added.

A fundamental part of the agreement is the synergy between Wider’s expertise – in terms of product and of managing international distribution networks – and the resources of the Genting Group, which operates mainly in the tourism and leisure sectors.

The Group boasts a capillary presence on Asian markets, manages 5 companies listed on the Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong stock exchanges and capitalises around 35 billion dollars, employing 52,000 people. Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay also controls the third most important company in the world in the cruise liner business, with Star Cruise (South Asia) and Norwegian Cruise Line (Caribbean).

Whilst Wider was assisted in this operation by KT Finance and Mazzoni & Associati, EXA Ltd. was assisted by Clyde & Co.

China (Shanghai) International Boat Show (CIBS) History and Future

December 13, 2012

The China (Shanghai) International Boat Show (CIBS) opened its doors for the very first time 17 years ago, literally in an underground car park. The only way to describe this decision is visionary, because the Chinese leisure boat industry at that time was not even at its beginnings.

China (Shanghai) International Boat Show (CIBS)

China (Shanghai) International Boat Show (CIBS)

Over the years the show has grown and while, like any market, there has been the occasional year where the growth has reversed slightly, CIBS has gone from strength to strength.

Part of the cause of that strong growth is the very location of the show. Shanghai has a history going back centuries as a port, as an international city and as China’s primary window on the world. It’s maritime tradition, cultural mix and the city’s modern wealth and dynamism make it almost automatic that the relatively new leisure marine industry should have one of birthplaces and centres of growth here in the city.

It also has to be said that UBM SinoExpo’s handling of the show is also one of the primary reasons for its success. Accommodating its exhibitors as best as possible, introducing new initiatives such as try-a-boat open days, a Charity Regatta, model boat sailing on site, the Asian Marine & Boating Awards and this year, for the first time, looking at a wider collection of products that are all part of the trappings that make up leisure boating.

Of course a collection of boats that people just look at is more an exhibition than a show but the market for leisure craft is growing in China and along with the vibrancy of Shanghai, it is bordered on two sides by two of China’s wealthiest provinces that bring along one more vital ingredient – easily accessible boating waters. This combination has led to a rapidly growing number of end users who want to ‘get on the water’ and do so in their own boat.

Last year CIBS moved to a new show site, 30% bigger than the old one – and sold out. More importantly the boats on show also virtually sold out with many more orders taken for a total value of RMB 2.2Bn (Yes that is a ‘B’ not an ‘M’). This year it is bigger still and already – with 4 months to go – 80% of the new space is taken up.

All this in the global light of boat shows being reduced in size or cancelled altogether.

Where will it end?

Well in the USA, 50% of those who can afford a boat own one – of all sorts of sizes. In China just 0.004% of those who can afford a boat have, so far, taken that first step.

One counter argument is that “it could take forever”.

The dinghy revolution in the UK started just 50 or so years ago with the small cruiser market taking off in the 80’s – that is not so long ago – and with the Chinese middle class already around 4 times that of the whole population of the UK.

Additionally, the population of Chinese millionaires already outnumbers those in the whole of Europe, the country’s economy is second only to one and a boat is perceived by many to be the ultimate luxury product in a land where 3 separate and independent reports placed China as the world’s largest luxury goods market in the future. The only difference between these three reports was timescale, and the longest estimate was just 7 years from now.

China is set to be one of the world’s biggest boating markets, just as it already is rushing up the league tables in so many other product categories and the China (Shanghai) International Boat Show is just one indicator of how this area of leisure is proving to be of increasing interest to its people.

China is a growing market for the nautical industry, in terms of both clients and services, marinas and infrastructures. Indeed, an out and out nautical culture has begun to spread. Today’s Chinese clients are more mature and aware than those of the past, hence ready for a brand like Mangusta, which has been a leader in the sector of cutting-edge maxi open yachts for over 30 years. Innovation and technology, high quality, luxury and artisan skill, a top performance, high levels of safety, spacious environments and on-board comfort, Italian style and bespoke interiors blend together perfectly on Mangusta yachts.

“We’re really enthusiastic about starting this adventure with Martello Yachting,” declared Maurizio Balducci, Overmarine Group CEO. “We can’t wait to work with Mr Ho and his team to develop the brand expansion and reinforcement process we are putting into effect throughout the world, in China and Singapore, too.”

Martello Yachting was founded in 2009 and specialises in superyachts, backed by its team’s 30 year experience. With four Asian offices: Beijing, Hong Kong, Xiamen and Singapore, and over 25 employees offering consistent assistance to clients before, during and after they purchase their yacht.

Martello Yachting shares the same values and approach to clients as the Overmarine Group, and is an ideal partner for strengthening the Mangusta brand on such a strategic market.

Overmarine Group | Mangusta has offices in Fort Lauderdale, USA too, as well as a network of strategically placed sales partners in Brazil, the US and Canada, France, the Balearic Islands, Russia, Turkey and India. Agreements are currently being negotiated with suitable partners on just as many other interesting markets.
