£60 million redevelopment for BMF Member Milford Haven Marina

March 22, 2013

The member of British Marine Federation (BMF), Milford Haven Marina, has a very bright future in store with a £60million redevelopment programme in the pipeline. Plans are in hand for an amazing new marina village, more berthing locations as well as further facilities for berth holders. Situated in the lovely Western reaches of Wales, Milford Marina has recently been assessed under The Yacht Harbour Associations (TYHA) prominent Gold Anchor Scheme and has been honored with four Gold Anchors.

Offering 328 fully serviced berths, they also have an excellent environmental policy, and all policies and procedures are in line with TYHA Code of Practice. A programme of berth holders’ events is in place for 2013, which is a real attraction for the keen boater. The assessor was also impressed with some of their advertising campaigns, particularly those centred on safety. Undoubtedly, one of the key assets for this marina is the stunning location within the UK’s only coastal National Park.

The waterway goes out through ‘The Heads’ to the scenic and stunning Pembrokeshire coast line. The islands of Skomer and Skokholm lie just off the headland, both of which are internationally important sea bird colonies. These are worth visiting to experience the Puffins alone. Up river there are picturesque villages with local pubs and tea rooms to discover, whatever the weather.

The Team, under the management of Eira Griffiths, are known among their berth holders as helpful and enthusiastic and this was mirrored in the berth holder survey results. Eira says of their award, “I’m delighted that we’ve retained our four Gold Anchors. This is the third time we’ve been recognised for our quality facilities and excellent customer service, which makes me really proud of the whole team. At the moment we’re busy getting ready for the start of this year’s season and are looking forward to seeing more of our regular berth holders as well as welcoming new visitors.”

TYHA Assessor, Gareth Turnbull says
, “There are some great services on offer at Milford Haven Marina, particularly the positive customer service that the marina team provide. It was a pleasure to assess them and they deserve their four Gold Anchors.”

Loro Piana – Title Sponsor of the Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous

March 21, 2013

For the second year running, Loro Piana represents the title sponsor of the “Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous”, exclusive nautical competition, now in its third edition, organized in partnership with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda as well as Boat International media. Moreover, making further news this year is the Loro Piana Superyacht Trophy, commencing on March 25, a transfer race, which departs Virgin Gorda for nearby St. Barths for the St. Barths Bucket regatta.

The event counts no more than 30 of the world’s largest sail and motor boats that – measuring no less than 80  feet – will challenge one another in the crystal waters of the Caribbean Sea, testing the tactical abilities of their owners and crew in a succession of races.

A breath-taking competition is foreseen, where the Wally 101 superyacht Indio, overall winner of the 2011 Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in Porto Cervo and the 2012 Caribbean Superyacht Regatta and Rendezvous, will be taking part, as will the 42-metre luxury yacht Hanuman, the winner of the 2011 Caribbean regatta. The latter, built by the Royal Huisman as a modern recreation of the Super J Class yacht Endeavour II, will be competing alongside the J Class charter yacht Endeavour in scenes reminiscent of the 1930s golden era of the America’s Cup.

Moreover, the fleet will comprise two yachts from the Perini Navi shipyard, at the cutting edge of nautical engineering:  the 53m charter yacht Parsifal III and the 38m charter yacht P2. Other rivals to keep an eye on will be luxury yacht Sarafin, Freya yacht and superyacht Cape Arrow, one of the latest Southern Wind 100, built by the South African boatyard specializing in Performance Blue Water maxi yachts and chartered for the occasion by Pier Luigi Loro Piana.

Nominations for MDL Marinas’ Sail Training Awards 2013 now open

March 20, 2013

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, MDL Marinas has once again opened the nominations for its annual Sail Training Awards, providing deserving youngsters with the opportunity to experience a week onboard a sailing yacht operated by Ocean Youth Trust South.

MDL

The awards are designed to recognise, reward and challenge youngsters who have shown exceptional accomplishments and qualities that have inspired or supported others. Since launching over twenty years ago, the awards have rewarded more than 130 young people, aged between 12 and 18.

This year’s six award winners will experience an unforgettable sailing experience on a journey from Ipswich to Southampton at the end of August.

MDL Marinas has also selected Ocean Youth Trust South as its chosen charity for its 40th anniversary year, with a series of fundraising events being planned, including raffles and prize auctions.

MDL’s Managing Director, Eamonn Feeney commented: “We’re proud of our continued commitment to Ocean Youth Trust South, and are delighted to be providing the charity with even more support this year through our 40th anniversary events. The Sail Training Awards are a very important initiative for us and we have so far helped well over a hundred youngsters to experience something truly exceptional.

“We would encourage people to think about nominating deserving young people they know, who would really benefit from an experience like this, as well as inviting other businesses to get involved with this very worthy charity. For many of our award winners, it’s the first chance they have had to get out on the water, and the sense of achievement for everyone involved is tremendous.”

Mark Todd, Chief Executive from Ocean Youth Trust South, added: “MDL’s support has been absolutely critical to us for many years. The staff in MDL marinas do a great job and go out of their way to be helpful and welcoming to vessels including our own John Laing. And the young people who come to us through MDL’s sponsorship are always exceptionally deserving – and some are truly inspirational. Ocean Youth Trust South is very proud to be working with MDL and honoured to be the chosen charity for their 40th year: with their generous support and that of their berth holders and marina tenants, we can go on to provide adventure under sail to many more young people from the widest possible range of backgrounds. We wish MDL a happy birthday and many successful years to come!”

Past winners have included young people who have been outstanding achievers, as well as those who have been involved in voluntary work, those who have never had the chance to travel abroad, and those with added family responsibilities.

Winners will be selected from the regions in which MDL Marinas are located; the South West, Dorset, Hampshire, Thames Valley and East Coast.

The deadline for nominations is Friday 26th April 2013.
