Callender Designs win the 2010 ISS Excellence in Innovation Award

September 28, 2010

The Design Director of UK based Callender Designs, Alastair Callender was announced as the winner of the Excellence in Innovation Award category during the 2010 Monaco Yacht Show. The award is part of the prestigious Award of Distinction and was voted by the Board of Directors of the International Superyacht Society (ISS).

Alastair Callender said, “This Excellence in Innovation award is a real honour to receive: to have my name and design work recognised in this way is tremendous. I am looking forward to an exciting career in the yacht design industry.”

The Monaco Yacht Club was a fitting venue to announce Alastair as the winner of this category. It was here – one year ago – the 190 foot Soliloquy eco-design concept, was displayed during the 2009 Monaco Yacht Show week.

“Innovation is essential to future business and the development of the industry as a whole.
I hope by coupling beautiful aesthetics with a novel, sustainable design approach, the Green Agenda will also be supported through the work that we do as designers.”

Alastair‟s career has been going from strength-to-strength, after receiving numerous international accolades over the last 12 months, including winning the esteemed Condé Nast International Innovation and Design Award in May 2010, for Sustainable Design.

“It is a wonderful award from the ISS, especially in the knowledge that my design work was voted for by professionals within the superyacht industry.”

All recipients of the ISS Awards of Distinction will be presented their awards during the ISS International Awards for Design & Leadership Gala, held on the opening night of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in October 2010.

Although the multi-award winning Soliloquy superyacht remains a concept at present, the Callender Designs studio are positive that this super-green superyacht, with technology supplied by Solar Sailor Ltd; or other recent yacht design enquires, will soon be taken through further development, and into reality.

Female Nominees

Kristin Boesse (GER) – Nine Time Kitesurf World Champion

Kristin Boesse only began kitesurfing in 2001, but since then has established herself as the leading name in the business. In 2005 she won her first World title and then followed it up with a stack of awards across the disciplines, winning freestyle, wave-riding, slider and kicker, boarder-cross and course racing titles. In 2009, she claimed the IKA Course Racing title to bring her total to a phenomenal nine world titles. This achievement saw Boesse enter the Guiness Book of World Records in November 2009 for the most kiting world championship titles.

In 2010, she continued to make her presence felt competing on the circuit but focussed most of her attention on encouraging others to take up the sport. Boesse launched KB4girls in December 2009, a non-profit organization that created a worldwide clinic tour for female kiters. This year alone, she ran eleven clinics on a shoestring budget and coached more than 300 girls. The project is designed attract new girls into the sport, to enhance skills for the more experienced, boost self-confidence and motivate them to compete.

This determined woman is an outstanding athlete and is dedicated to promoting her sport, the environment and women’s participation.

Siripon Kaewduang-Ngam (THA) – Youth Olympic Games gold medallist

It’s all about firsts for Thailand’s Siripon Kaewduang-Ngam and her achievements over the past year have placed her in the history books forever. Ngam started windsurfing when she was 13 and by the time she was 16 she was making her mark on the international stage. Ngam won the Asian Championships in January 2010 to claim her place at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore sailing the Techno 293.

She may have been one of the favourites going into YOG but her sheer domination of the girl’s windsurfing event has earned her another spot in the history books as the first sailor from Thailand to ever be nominated for this award.

Eleven races were sailed in Singapore and the winner of an incredible seven of these was Ngam. She was unstoppable and didn’t finish any race outside the top ten. The gold medal was secured before the final day of competition so she can also claim to have won the first ever Youth Olympic Games sailing medal.

This star of the future demonstrated a cool head by sailing a conservative final race, reminding herself to “just think about crossing the finish line”.

Blanca Manchón (ESP) – RS:X World Champion & Double World Cup Winner

In September 2009, Blanca Manchón was crowned 2008-09 ISAF Sailing World Cup champion after dominating the competition throughout the seven-regatta series. Manchón sealed the deal with a victory at the final regatta of the series, Skandia Sail for Gold in Weymouth, to bring her total of gold medals to four. This talented young windsurfer finished on the podium at every single regatta she sailed, an outstanding achievement.

Manchón claimed the silver medal at the 2009 RS:X World Championships in Weymouth, but it is gold that she really strives for. One year on and the RS:X fleet were in Denmark for the 2010 World Championship and this time Manchón was going to settle for nothing less than the top of the podium. It did not come easy and she had to dig deep to come from behind in the Medal Race to take the win.

Manchón is one of the busiest sailors on the circuit and sailed at six of the 2009-2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas, finishing on the podium at five of them. Second in Miami was her first medal followed by another silver in Hyères. She then claimed her first gold at the Delta Lloyd Regatta before finishing both Kieler Woche and Skandia Sail for Gold with the silver medal. The impressive consistency of Manchón secured her second consecutive ISAF Sailing World Cup win.

Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout (NED) – 470 World Champions

Lisa Westerhof and Lobke Berkhout make a formidable team and although they may not have a long history sailing together they have a talent to make it count when it matters. Teaming up in May 2009, the goal for this team is Olympic gold in 2012.

Westerhof and Berkhout kicked off the nomination period with a win at the 2009 Skandia Sail for Gold before going on to sail at five of the 2009-2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas. Their best performance was on home waters at Delta Lloyd Regatta where they won the silver medal in May.

The main target for this team in 2010 was the 470 World Championships at The Hague. The defending champions were set to make history if they could take home another gold medal and in a regatta that threw extreme conditions at the sailors, they showed their class. Going into the Medal Race one point behind the leaders, Westerhof and Berkhout sailed a tactical race to secure their gold medal. Two world titles for Westerhof is an exceptional achievement and the 2010 win for Berkhout makes her the most successful 470 sailor in the history of the class with five world titles.

Westerhof combines her sailing career with her professional career as an airline pilot, while Berkhout is dedicated to the future of the sport, working with children around the world to inspire them to take up sailing.

Male Nominees

Antoine Albeau (FRA) – Professional Windsurfing Association & Formula World Champion

Since 1994, Albeau has notched up a staggering eleven world titles across many disciplines and also held the World Speed record at 48.7 knots back in 2008. During the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award nomination period, Albeau won the German leg of the 2009 PWA Tour, his sixth win from seven events, and he was crowned 2009 PWA Slalom World Champion.

In March 2010 he took on the Formula Windsurfing World Championship in Argentina and won that as well. Albeau was almost untouchable in Mendoza, winning seven of the 15 races and ending the series with a 27 net point lead.

Back on the PWA Tour and Albeau flew out of the blocks at the first event in Korea to take a win in May.  This was followed by second place in Catalunya, first again in Fuerteventura and then another second at the World Cup event in Alacati, Turkey in August. This impressive achievement hands Albeau the 2010 Overall Slalom title with a regatta to spare, his fourth successive world title in this discipline.

Born in La Rochelle in France, Antoine Albeau was introduced at an early age to windsurfing by his father. Since his first outing at five-years old, using a cut down adult sail so it wasn’t too big for him, Albeau has become one of the most successful windsurfers in the history of the sport.

Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page (AUS) – 470 World Champions and World Cup winners

Mat Belcher and Malcolm Page are at the very top of their game and since they teamed up in 2009 have steadily exerted their authority on the 470 class.

With a gold medal from Beijing and four world titles to his name, Malcolm Page is a formidable crew to have at the front of your boat and since teaming up with Mat Belcher things could hardly be better. They notched up 28 straight race wins across the 2009 Australian summer regatta season and then turned their attention to the ISAF Sailing World Cup and the European season.

Belcher and Page sailed at all seven of the 2009-10 ISAF Sailing World Cup regattas, stood on the podium at five of them and led the Standings from start to finish. Their first victory came at Sail Melbourne in December 2009, followed by silver in Miami, silver at Delta Lloyd and gold at Kieler Woche before a final silver medal at Skandia Sail for Gold. This impressive set of results gave them an unassailable lead on the Standings and in September they were crowned 2009-10 ISAF Sailing World Cup Champions.

Belcher and Page were equally dominant at the 2010 470 World Championship at The Hague in the Netherlands. After an impressive performance, including five race wins, they had secured the gold medal before the Medal Race. Page can now count five 470 World titles and the accolade of ‘most successful male 470 sailor’. On 18 August they also rose to the #1 position on the ISAF Sailing World Rankings.

As well as his commitments to the 470 campaign, Malcolm Page also finds time to sail with the Estate Master Farr 40 team as trimmer.   Regatta wins included the Rolex Trophy, the Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta, the Rolex Farr 40 pre-World Championship and fourth place at the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds in the Dominican Republic. He also is a member of the ISAF Athletes’ Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport Athletes’ Commission.

Lorenzo Bressani (ITA) – Melges 24 and 32 Champion

The Melges Class has a double champion in Lorenzo Bressani, a star performer in the Melges 24 and the Melges 32. Bressani is the man at the back of Melges Uka Uka Racing and the nomination period began for him with a win at the pre-Worlds in October 2009 and was followed up with sixth place at the Worlds. Adding these results to an already successful season, Bressani claimed first overall on the 2009 World and European ranking series.

The 2010 season began with a win at Key West Race Week and Bressani has posted an unblemished score card since. Key West was followed by the Italian Nationals, the Alghero regatta of the Volvo Cup circuit, the Estonian and Finnish Nationals and finally the big prize, the 2010 Marinepool Melges 24 World Championship sailed in Tallinn, Estonia in August. Bressani also won the world title in 2008 and is one of only two people to have won this title twice.

Bressani’s incredible win rate in the Melges 24 is complemented by his success in the Melges 32 fleet, where he sails B-Lin as tactician. In September 2009, Bressani’s team finished third at the Melges 32 Worlds in Porto Cervo, Italy and finished five of the next regattas on the podium. At two of these Bressani finished first, the Primo Cup Trophée Credit Suisse in Milan and regatta 5 of the Melges 32 sailing series. These results add up to first overall in the Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series 2010.

The Melges 32 was also selected as one of the classes at the ISAF Offshore Team World Championship. Bressani and the Italian team finished second overall.

Outside the Melges class, Bressani also sails as helm or tactician on the TP52 Luna Rossa in the Audi Med Cup Circuit and finished second overall at the X41 World Championship.

Franck Cammas (FRA) – Record breaking offshore racer

The lure of the ocean and the coveted Outright Round the World Record and Jules Verne Trophy has seen Franck Cammas fine tune his team and his machine after twice being forced to abandon the dream. In January 2010, he embarked on his latest record attempt aboard his 103-foot trimaran Groupama3. Less than two months later he was back and with a new world record of 48 days, 7 hours, 44 minutes and 52 seconds. Cammas led his nine crew round the official course distance of 21,760 miles at an average speed of 18.76 knots with a top speed of 42 knots. In total, the team sailed 28,523 miles, which amounts to an average speed of 24.6 knots. This phenomenal journey also secured the Indian Ocean Intermediate Record of 8 days, 17 hours and 40 minutes.

From the 103-foot trimaran, Cammas downsized dramatically to the Extreme 40 catamaran, competing on the Extreme 40 Series, before going another hull down to join the record books sailing the monohull Volvo 70, Groupama70. On 23 August, Cammas set out on the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race with a crew of ten, the first real challenge for a team testing the waters for a Volvo Ocean Race campaign. By 29 August, Cammas had another world record, setting a new time for the Round Britain and Ireland of 5 days, 21 hours and 26 minutes.

Cammas has completed 69 races on board Groupama boats, achieving 57 podiums and 31 wins. He has been named the ORMA World Champion six times and is always a formidable adversary, regardless of the challenge. A rigorous, talented, perfectionist Cammas leaves nothing to chance.

Tom Slingsby (AUS) – Laser & Etchells World Champion

Tom Slingsby is an exceptional talent. He began the nomination period with a win at Skandia Sail for Gold 2009 and ended it in exactly the same way at the 2010 regatta. In between Slingsby won virtually every regatta he sailed in. In December 2009, he was back in Australia for the summer season in the Laser winning Sail Sydney and the Australian national title. He also picked up the Etchells national title in January and the Farr 40 national title in March.

Sailing as tactician on the Farr 40 Transfusion, Slingsby guided the team to second overall at the Rolex Farr 40 Worlds in the Dominican Republic in April before returning to the Laser and the European circuit of the ISAF Sailing World Cup. Slingsby sailed at three of the 2009-10 regattas and won them all: Delta Lloyd, Kieler Woche and Skandia Sail for Gold. He also picked up the bronze medal at the Laser Europeans in Estonia.

Between gold medals in the Laser, Slingsby travelled to Howth in Ireland with his Etchells team of John Bertrand and Andrew Palfrey. The team took charge from the second day of racing and with five race wins from the nine race series, they were able to sit out the final race and still be crowned 2010 World Champions.

The final fling for Slingsby was the Laser World Championship at Hayling Island in the UK and once again the Australian was dominant. He claimed his third Laser world title with a 36-point margin over the silver medallist.

Ed Wright (GBR) – Finn World Champion and double World Cup Winner

Ed Wright is one of the true heavy-hitters of the Finn class who pulls out top performance after top performance. Renowned for being one of the fittest sailors in the fleet, Wright relishes the power of the Finn and the technical challenges of the class.

Having already secured the 2008-2009 ISAF Sailing World Cup overall title, Wright finished the season with a silver at the Skandia Sail for Gold regatta. He then kicked off the 2009-2010 series in style, winning his first two regattas: the Rolex Miami OCR and Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia MAPFRE. Wright was off the podium in Hyères, finishing sixth, but then travelled to Split Croatia for the Finn Europeans where he took home the silver medal.

Wright finished off the 2009-2010 ISAF Sailing World Cup with a fourth from Delta Lloyd and fifth from Skandia Sail for Gold, enough to secure his second consecutive ISAF Sailing World Cup overall title, one of only two sailors to achieve this feat.

The primary focus for the Finn fleet in 2010 was the Finn Gold Cup in San Francisco in August.   Wright showed his intent at the North American Championship in July by winning the gold medal. Back again in August and Wright barely put a foot wrong. At an event he had come so close to winning on numerous occasions, in 2010 he was not to be denied. After a consistent series he approached the Medal Race with a 13-point lead and powered off the start line to lead from start to finish. The Finn Gold Cup was his and a truly successful season concluded.

The Voting

The winners will be selected by the ISAF Member National Authorities, the national governing bodies for sailing around the world, who are now invited to vote for the one male and one female sailor who they believe most deserves the Award.

The winners will be announced at the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards presentation and dinner, which will take place on Tuesday 9 November 2010. The venue for the event is the Zappeion in Athens, Greece.

Each winner will be presented with the prestigious ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award Trophy and a distinctive Rolex timepiece.

America’s Cup Hall of Fame Induction

September 22, 2010

Under a star-lit sky, hundreds of sailing’s luminaries gathered on Saturday, September 18 for the 17th America’s Cup Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by Rolex Watch USA.  Harbour Court, New York Yacht Club’s on-the-water clubhouse in Newport, R.I.,  set the scene as over 650 guests, including many legendary America’s Cup sailors, witnessed the induction of six new members – Simon Daubney, Warwick Fleury, Murray Jones, Dean Phipps, Mike Drummond (all of New Zealand) and Halsey Herreshoff (of Bristol, R.I.) – into the Hall of Fame.

Master of Ceremonies Gary Jobson brought Cup legends Ted Turner, Dennis Conner, Russell Coutts and Malin Burnham to the stage to introduce the inductees, share anecdotes, and discuss the importance of the America’s Cup Hall of Fame.  New Zealand broadcaster PJ Montgomery, renowned for his America’s Cup coverage, recounted the careers of Daubney, Fleury, Jones and Phipps.  The ceremonies also included film highlights of the careers of the inductees, and after the guests raised glasses of Moët to toast them, each was presented with a custom-made barometer by Maximum Instruments.

“I came up with this idea that it would be a good idea to go up to the jumpers or well up the mast and have a look for the breeze,” said Jones recalling his first America’s Cup experience in 1995.  “The last 15 years, I’ve regretted having come up with that idea, although sometimes it’s actually quite nice to get off the deck and away from these guys.”

Acknowledging what an honor it was for him to be there, Daubney made some of the most humorous and touching remarks of the evening.  “I was lucky I was around at the very end of 12 Metre sailing and I got to sail with wire sheets and bolt cutters.  Kids today they just don’t get to do that stuff.  The good thing for sailing in the America’s Cup, for a person like me who is uneducated, is you get to sail and work with a lot of really smart people.  And it’s true.  I hear people laughing [in the audience].  I made a career out of just pulling the jib onto the top spreader.  I spent my whole career just looking at the thing.  And then you sit around with people from the fields of Formula One and scientists, people who paid attention in school, and they ask ‘what do you think’ and I’m like ‘what do you mean, what do I think?’

Herreshoff explained that there needed to be an organization to bridge the gap between Cup campaigns, and that the genesis for the Hall of Fame took place on a foggy night after sailing during a conversation about relationships, careers, and the privilege of being involved in the Cup.  “So for me it’s a thrill to be one of those inducted.  It is very special to me and I thank the selection committee.”

Motor yacht MCY 76 awarded Best Design Trophy and the Most Innovative Trophy at the World Yachts Trophies

September 22, 2010

A project this innovative could hardly pass unnoticed. Monte Carlo Yachts, a company of the Beneteau Group created less than two years ago, presents itself on the market with its first model – the MCY 76 – and right off the bat wins two awards at the prestigious WORLD YACHTS TROPHIES. This is an important honour both for the Italian brand, which has succeeded in putting itself in the limelight in such a short time, and for the Beneteau Group, the world leader in the sailing sector, which sees its strategic choice of investing in the luxury motor yacht sector being rewarded.

In September, the attention of yachting fans and those interested in luxury is concentrated on Cannes, where the Festival de la Plaisance marks the start of the new boating season. In the framework of this event, on Saturday, 11 September, on the beach of the Hotel Carlton along the Croisette, the World Yacht Trophies 2010 were awarded.

The MCY 76 motor yacht came away with two prizes: the Best Design Trophy and the Most Innovative Trophy. The jury thus put the accent on the innovative scope of the project, both in design and in the adoption of cutting-edge technological solutions. The MCY 76’s high, flared hull, the Portuguese deck forward, the glass and steel flybridge supports, the radar mast: already at first glance this 23-metre flybridge yacht demonstrates that it has brilliantly overcome the stylistic constraints that have conditioned yachting in the last twenty years. Digging down deeper one discovers also the strong technological contents that stand out on the motor yacht MCY 76. Technology in service to functionality and environmental compatibility: the photovoltaic panels sunk in the carbon T-top generate part of the electricity needed for onboard life; the aerospace-derived sewage treatment system transforms the contents of the tank that collects the drainage from all the bathrooms into pure water; the infusion process estende to all the components eliminates atmospheric emissions and reduces weights and consumption; and the auto trim system enhances comfort and contributes to cutting down on fuel consumption as well.

Citadel Yachts Expedition Yacht Miss Lisa

September 21, 2010

The second generation 28 metre (92 ft) motor yacht MISS LISA from Citadel Yachts is one of the finalists for the 2010 ISS International Design Awards in the Best Power category for yachts from 24 to 40 metres. She has a robust steel hull construction, refined exterior styling and a luxurious interior by Joseph Artese. Miss Lisa expedition yacht not only showcases Citadel’s impressive craftsmanship inside and out, but she offers her owners a confident long-range expedition cruiser with fine appointments throughout a spacious layout.

“We wanted the feel of a large yacht in a hull less than 100 feet,” said her owner, also explaining that comfort, safety, quiet operation and stability were critical to their travel plans. These considerations led the experienced cruisers to Citadel Yachts, one of the rare American builders specializing in steel-hull displacement construction. After inspecting the yard’s previous 92-foot expedition cruiser, the contract was signed for MY Miss Lisa…with a few modifications.

The most notable difference is the conventionally angled pilothouse windshield, an alteration to the aluminum superstructure for a more elongated appearance compared to the first 92’s reverse windshield treatment. “An abundance of radius curvatures were also incorporated throughout Miss Lisa’s exterior for enhanced styling without losing sight of her expeditionary roots,” said Greg Ward, Citadel owner. All steel-and-aluminum exterior surfaces were painstakingly primed, faired and top coated utilizing an Awlgrip system. Her striking Flag Blue hull and Matterhorn White topsides complement her lines that aside from beauty were built to endure seas.

“Our steel hull design features a high bow with aggressive compound curvature and refined cutwater for fuel efficiency,” says Ward. A massive one-inch thick, 12-inch by 12-inch box beam keel and four solid two-inch steel skegs positioned under the props and stabilizers provide unparalled protection in the unfortunate event of a grounding. The pilothouse, fly bridge and mast are constructed of aluminum to lower the center of gravity for improved sea keeping.

Massive 10-inch teak caprails were installed on all bulwarks with teak decking on all levels except the flybridge. Two highly-polished, custom stainless steel anchor winches, complete with polished stainless anchor troughs and gold plated control levers, adorn the foredeck of the expedition yacht Miss Lisa. Stainless steel handrails and safety rails accent this area with a large Portuguese bulwark for added protection to the pilothouse.

Expedition Yacht Miss Lisa’s expansive 25-foot beam allowed the creation of vast interior spaces, yet still enabled a full walk-around on the main deck and the advantage of requiring fewer crew. Three distinctly different living spaces alone comprise more than 1,200 square feet: the salon and dining area for a formal setting; the galley, a superb spot for casual and festive entertaining; and, the sky lounge, where sweeping 360-degree views make this a peaceful retreat.

The main deck master suite is also large for this size yacht at over 200 square feet. Flanked by 12-square-foot port and starboard windows, it includes a king-size bed, entertainment center and marble ensuite bath. Three additional queen-berthed guest staterooms are on the lower level all with marble ensuite baths as well. Further aft, two additional cabins, each finished to guest standards, accommodate four crew or additional guests.

Great care and attention was paid to every detail when crafting Miss Lisa motoryacht’s exquisite interior joinery and cabinetry of anigre, a non-threatened wood chosen for its tone and consistent and subtle grain. “After installation, eight coats of finish were applied to external and internal woodwork, each coat sanded back by hand with a subsequent coating added,” explains Ward, proud of his team’s work with Offshore Interiors to deliver an impressive final product.

Miss Lisa Super Yacht’s noticeably roomy 23-foot by 23-foot engine room allows complete access to all machinery for ease of maintenance and quick visual inspection while underway. Her strategically positioned equipment includes twin Caterpillar 18’s for propulsion and two 40kw Northern lights gensets for power. The lazarette houses a 3-phase A-SEA converter with foreign shore power.

Compared to Citadel’s first 92, Miss Lisa expedition yacht features an extended boat deck capable of securing a 22-foot tender. The 4,500-pound-capacity Steelhead Marine crane is positioned to deploy the tender and facilitate loading through the watertight hatch aft on the main deck. Appropriately, her gleaming white below-deck spaces provide direct, easy access and stowage volume commensurate with the demands of lengthy voyages.

Following the yacht’s arrival in South Florida and summer cruising in New England, her itinerary options are endless. “It’s the right boat for the times,” concluded Miss Lisa’s owner. “It’s economical to operate, and can easily be run by a crew of two.”

CJR Propulsion awarded by Sunseeker for its quality

September 16, 2010

CJR Propulsion, the UK’s leading manufacturer of precision propeller and sterngear systems, has again been recognised as a key supplier at Sunseeker’s annual awards presentation, winning the overall award for quality.

The award, which represents CJR’s fourth honour in as many years,   was given in recognition of the company’s continued quality excellence and was presented at this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show by Sunseeker International’s CEO, Robert Braithwaite.

Sunseeker’s CEO, Robert Braithwaite presents the award to Mark Russell, Managing Director at CJR

Sunseeker’s CEO, Robert Braithwaite presents the award to Mark Russell, Managing Director at CJR

On the topic of the award, Andrew McDonald, Head of Purchasing remarked:   “It is always a pleasure to acknowledge our best suppliers and this year we are pleased to award CJR the ‘Quality Award’ following another year of outstanding service to Sunseeker. As a value added company, Sunseeker relies on its global network of suppliers to ensure that we deliver outstanding quality products and we are always happy to recognise those who contribute to our success. CJR, a name synonymous with quality products throughout the industry, has fulfilled this brief time and time again – demonstrating consistent dedication to maintaining the highest levels of product quality and service.”

On receiving the award, CJR’s managing director, Mark Russell commented:  “We continue to strive for product improvement but we also constantly examine our business practices to identify where improvements can be made. By winning this award, it highlights our continued efforts and demonstrates to other manufacturers the commitment we place in producing quality products, as well as maintaining positive relationships with our customers.

CJR Propulsion has worked with Sunseeker since 2001 and today supplies  sterngear packages to all Sunseeker’s shaft driven boats, including  the latest flagship 40m superyacht, which is currently on display at  this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show, featuring RINA Approved Shafts,  Stern tubes, P-Brackets and Rudders and a newly developed tiller and  tie bar system. Several other CJR equipped Sunseeker boats are available to view at the show.

CJR’s relationship with Sunseeker is also still growing and the companies are working together on an advanced computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study for the new Sunseeker 73 Manhattan. The six month project, which is also in partnership with Southampton University’s engineering department, aims to improve the flow of underwater appendages by studying the interaction between the equipment and water flow.

The study has already shown significant results, as Russell explains: “We have been working with CFD for some time and the potential results are staggering. Using the advanced software we have developed, we believe we can increase speed by up to four knots for the same power, or reduce energy use without a drop in performance. On top of this, we are looking to significantly reduce vibration from the propeller and increase longevity by reducing unnecessary water pressure on the underwater gear.

Vibrant Curiosity super yacht

The individual selection of five finalists in each award grouping results from the privilege to vote that ISS membership affords. A distinguished and impartial group of judges then weighs the qualifications of each yacht with the winning yachts announced at ISS’s annual International Design Awards Gala, this year on Thursday, 28 October from 7:00 P.M. at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort, Fort Lauderdale.

ISS also recognizes achievement in the business and service of superyachts. During the Gala, ISS Awards of Distinction—Business(Person) of the Year and Innovation Awards as well as the Leadership Award and Distinguished Crew Award—are presented.

The ISS Business (Person) of the Year is awarded to those demonstrating excellence in their area of superyacht expertise within the previous year; nominations come from both the industry and the ISS board with the board making the finalist selections. Previous honourees have included Frans Heesen, Heesen Yachts and John Dane, Trinity Yachts.

Open to every aspect of the industry—from crew training to technological advances to environmental stewardship—the Excellence in Innovation award is given to an individual or business that has demonstrated innovation in their endeavours. Nominations come from the industry and ISS board members vote to determine finalists. In 2009 and 2008 respectively, Carlisle and Finch and Agrimond were awarded the Excellence in Innovation honour.

ISS’s Leadership Award recognizes an individual or business whose distinctive work and commitment to the industry has contributed—over a substantial period of time—to the sustainable growth of the superyacht community worldwide. Nominations and selection for The Leadership Award are made by those who have received the award in previous years with the previous year’s winner presiding; this year, the chairmanship honour goes to Tony Hambrook, Alloy Yachts.

The Distinguished Crew Award is presented in years when the DCA award judges are presented with a nomination that represents the essence of the award (nominations are sought industry-wide). Specifically, these honours are designed to recognize yacht crew whose distinguished acts of service best exemplify the standards to which professional yacht crew aspire.

ISS’s Business (Person) of the Year and Innovation of the Year winners will also be honoured at the Meeting of the Associations in Monaco on Wednesday, 22 September 2010.

ISS would like to acknowledge the invaluable, and continuing, support of its gala event sponsors—Robb Report, Show Management, The Yacht Report Group, Westrec Marinas and Wright Maritime Group.
