Judges’ Coordinator Alistair Skinner said: “With a membership amongst the largest in the world, three custom-built bases and an activities calendar second to none, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is a class apart. A worthy repeat winner at the Asian Marine & Boating Awards, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club is not just inward-looking as the Club, and its members, actively assist in developing sailing events here on the mainland also. It is the Club that every serious club in Asia should aspire to become.” Mr. Skinner goes on to add “this is well deserved and the statement is no form of exaggeration at all.”

The awards pride themselves in the fact that the panel of judges come primarily from the boating media with some from independent professionals in the industry – none of whom have a financial interest in any of the votes they cast. “With this philosophy in mind, the recipient of an Asian Marine & Boating Award can be sure that they haven’t just been given a gift, they have indeed won an award.“ said Mr. Skinner.

“We are thrilled to have won this award for the second time and our members and staff can be justifiably proud, as we continually work hard to raise the profile of sailing not only in Hong Kong and China, but also regionally and internationally” said Mark Bovaird, the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club’s General Manager who was on hand to receive the award at the glittering ceremony at the China (Shanghai) Boat Show 2012.

“To receive this Award on the heels of another successful Rolex China Sea Race and just ahead of the Taiwan Strait Race is the icing on the cake” he added.

World Superyacht Awards 2012: Cruising the Bosphorus aboard the 128 charter yacht SAVARONA

April 25, 2012

The World Superyacht Awards 2012 guests are kindly invited by Mr.Kahraman Sadikoğlu, an Owner of the beautiful motor yacht Savarona to enjoy a cruise along the Bosphorus, on the afternoon of Sunday 6th May. Designed by one of the best American naval architects of his day, William Francis Gibbs, the 128m luxury charter yacht Savarona was constructed in 1931 for Mrs. Emily Roebling Cadwalader at a cost of $4 millions.

Cadwalader was the granddaughter of John Augustus Roebling; the architect who designed the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the great engineering feats of the 19th century. Given this heritage, it is not surprising that she should have commissioned the largest and fastest yacht of her day, which remains one of the world’s largest private yachts.

For seven years, the luxury yacht Savarona plied the waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. In 1938 she was purchased by the Turkish government and presented to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, who held cabinet meetings and entertained world leaders aboard his yacht.

After Atatürk’s death, the Savarona was used by the Navy as a training ship, eventually falling into disrepair. She was saved in 1989 by Turkish businessman Kahraman Sadikoğlu, who embarked on an ambitious campaign of restoration, employing no less than 425 skilled workers.

The Savarona superyacht isn’t just a ship, but rather a floating gallery of art and antiques. As soon as boarding the ship, one realizes that its restoration and embellishment were a labor of love on the part of Mr. Sadikoğlu and his wife, Julide. There is antique furniture everywhere, ornate gilded mirrors, authentic kilims (some as much as 100 years old), bronze statues and an outstanding collection of paintings and prints by contemporary Turkish artists.

Cruising along the international coasts, the 128m megayacht Savarona brings an experience of elegance and luxury to those who are lucky enough to be her guests. Thus far, Savarona has hosted VIP guests such as Prince Rainier, Prince Charles, the Sultan of Brunei, King Juan Carlos of Spain, Princess Diana, fashion-designer Valentino and a host of Hollywood stars.

Guests of the World Superyacht Awards 2012 have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cruise the historic Bosphorus waterway to the Black Sea and back on board the iconic charter yacht Savarona, which has become an important part of modern Turkish history.

Places are limited and subject to availability, with priority given to superyacht owners and event sponsors.

The cruise will begin promptly at 3pm.

China (Shanghai) Boat Show 2012: Asian Marine & Boating Awards public voting

April 13, 2012

In a new move to permit the boating public to experience a better level of ownership the Asian Marine & Boating Awards are placing the nominees for 3 categories on the China (Shanghai) Boat Show website to permit the public to vote for their preferred nominee.

Logo

Although this does open up the door for misuse, voting patterns will be monitored to ensure that the awards are not ‘bought’ as they can sometimes be in other instances. Even the US Movie Oscars were accused of such impropriety over recent years with the most lavish party resulting in a statuette.

This move is part of the ongoing development process of keeping, not just the Awards themselves, but also Asia’s largest boat show fresh, modern and relevant in the rapidly developing Chinese boating market.

In a statement Judges Coordinator Alistair Skinner said, “We will not go as far as some awards in allowing public nominations. That only runs the risk of every builder getting friends to nominate their own boat meaning a snowfall of nominees making the judges’ task impossible. The judges we have involved know what is good, ordinary and downright terrible in the marine industry and as such we have to trust their judgment as professionals.”

The three categories that are to be posted to the Show´s website for public voting are Asian Boating Capital of the year; Asian Regatta of the Year and Asian Yacht Club of the Year.

It will be interesting to see how closely (or otherwise) the public perception of these events, cities and clubs relates to those of the panel of judges. Having said that, the nominees all have their own merits in the eyes of the judges and any one would be a worthy winner.

The votes will be correlated and the results kept under wraps, just like all the other categories, until the actual award ceremony itself held during the China (Shanghai) International Boat Show that runs from the 19th to 22nd April 2012.
