NMMA Canada about the importance of Recreational Boating Industry

November 02, 2011

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) Canada has had a speech before the House of Commons Finance Committee, that prepares for the 2012 federal budget. NMMA Canada was happy to be given the possibility to discuss the recreational boating industry’s main challenges and future opportunities and how government can be involved.

“NMMA is delighted to have the opportunity to tell our dedicated members of the House of Commons Finance Committee the significant impact the recreational boating industry has on Canada’s economy – from creating jobs to providing a means for middle-class citizens to enjoy our country’s great outdoors,” said Sara Anghel, Executive Director. “Recreational boating is also a major contributor to tourism in Canada and with the announcement of a tourism strategy from the Harper government we look forward to continuing to grow boating and the economic strength of Canada.”

NMMA’s presentation today helped ensure that the Canadian government understands the significance of the recreational boating industry to the national economy. There are an estimated six million boaters in Canada and of those six million boaters, most are middle-class. In addition, NMMA’s most recent economic impact study (2006) revealed that the recreational boating industry produced close to 400,000 jobs – directly and indirectly – across the country, including an estimated 7,000 well paying manufacturing jobs. What’s more, the Canadian recreational boating industry exports more than $600 million worth of product to international markets, including the U.S.

Specifically, during the hearing today, NMMA reinforced the importance of policy and expenditure initiatives fostering an environment that enables more Canadians to enjoy yachting, while also supporting local communities and industries which rely on the recreational boating sector.

October 31, 2011

Gulf Craft Inc., the most prominent manufacturer of luxury yachts and leisure craft in the Middle East and Asia, hosted a unique ‘Yachting Lifestyle Show’, at The Pearl, Qatar from October 27-29 2011. The luxury yacht event and lifestyle show showcased the superyacht builder’s motor yachts as well as celebrated Gulf Craft’s 30th anniversary.

Clients, media and the public will be able to view a range of luxury super yachts and yachts, sport cruisers and leisure boats from Gulf Craft’s Majesty Yachts, Oryx and Silvercraft brands at the Yachting Lifestyle Show, held in association with Gulf Craft’s Doha agents, Aurora Yachts and Speed Marine, as well as luxury lifestyle brand Tanagra. The Majesty 101 motor yacht was the largest superyacht on display.

“The Qatar yacht market is a very important market to us. The country’s leisure marine market is vibrant with growing demand from private yacht owners and charter brokers in addition to several large waterfront developments, luxury marinas and new berthing facilities coming online in the next few years – including those capable of accommodating the superyacht and megayacht category,” says Mohammed Bin Hussein Al Shaali, Chairman of Gulf Craft.

Qatar has significant waterfront development projects in various stages of development. For example, the Lusail City development, with a number of marinas and as many as 1,500 new berthing slots under development, is expected to become a busy maritime hub and waterfront destination when completed.

In the meantime existing luxury lifestyle destinations such as The Pearl Qatar along the coast of Doha’s prime West Bay district, already have berthing facilities available with more marina facilities planned, which are set to further boost the growth of the country’s marine leisure lifestyle.

The country’s concentration of HNWIs and UHNWIs is another draw card. According to a recent report by Credit Suisse Research Institute, Qatar has the wealthiest people in the Middle East and North Africa region, with the average wealth per adult standing at $146,623 – a six-fold wealth increase since 2000.

“Qatar is a nation with a rich sea-faring culture and therefore they do not only appreciate sailing and cruising as a recreational activity, but also have a connoisseur’s eye for well-engineered yachts built to a high finishing standard,” said Al Shaali. “With Gulf Craft’s proven track record of building yachts and boats since 30 years, and exporting them worldwide, we are proud to be recognized for our efforts by our Qatari customers,” he concluded.

Erwin Bamps, Chief Operating Officer for Gulf Craft, added: ‘As market leader in the Qatar market, we have a high number of yacht and leisure craft customers in this market already. We have appointed dealers in the market to ensure a strong technical and commercial support for our products and have come today to Doha to show our continuing commitment to the Qatari market, as well as to invite everyone to see some of our newest product releases.’

Boating Industry Association awarded

October 31, 2011

The New South Wales (NSW) Boating Industry Association has won the Safety leadership category at the 2011 WorkCover New South Wales SafeWork Awards for its work across Australia – a popular yacht charter location, to improve safety and reduce injuries through the guidance material distribution, delivery of training programs and workplace engagement strategies.

BIAImage: (L to R) General Manager of WorkCover’s Work Health and Safety Division John Watson, BIA representatives Colin Steber, Matthew Hundleby, Alan Steber, Alan Barrett, Bill Breakspear, Roy Privett and Marie Ficarra – Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier

The Boating Industry Association was one of six winners among 47 finalists, selected from 123 entries, announced at a ceremony at Darling Harbour.

Representing an industry that has a broad spectrum of workplace activities can be challenging for a representative body to lead. Working at heights or in confined spaces, using volatile chemicals and complex plant and equipment are just some of the issues faced by the boating industry.

“Our industry covers so many different types of workplaces – manufacturing and importing, broking and retailing, marinas and yacht yards, engineering, maintenance and rigging – and often these activities encompass different codes of practice and safety requirements,” said NSW Boating Industry Association Divisions Manager Alan Barrett.

“Working from scaffolding on a construction site is different from being suspended from a halyard on a yacht mast, so applying these standards to our industry is sometimes a challenge,” Mr Barrett said.

“The Boating Industry Association’s membership represents more than 90 per cent of commercial activity in the sector, which employs around 9000 people.”

“Our industry is close-knit and many who work in the industry are themselves keen boating enthusiasts, with wide networks rooted in non-vocational boating.”

“A key challenge for the boating community is communication. Our membership is largely made up of small businesses and individuals located in different work settings,” Mr Barrett said workplace safety was a strategic priority for the industry body.”

“It has been a conscious effort to continually address safety strategically. Overall, I think the boating industry does manage its safety really well,” he said.

“We encourage our members to look at safety objectively. Our serious injury rates are stable and reasonably low, so while there is always room for improvement we are confident we are on the right track.”

The Boating Industry Association entered into a formal partnership agreement with WorkCover in August 2009 to improve safety across the industry.

“The partnership agreement with WorkCover allows us to act as a conduit between the agency and the industry,” Mr Barrett said.

“Our biggest strength is to be able to share information about risks and incidents with our members simultaneously. We meet with WorkCover regularly to discuss incidents, members’ concerns and to receive best-practice advice that we can feed right back to our industry.”

The Association has also received positive feedback from members for its successful Marine Card work health and safety induction training package, which develops basic awareness about safer practices and compliance requirements, as well as creating a foundation for effective compliance management for site controllers.

“The marine card has been a very successful program that talks to everybody who works in boating – not just our members. We’ve put 1,300 people though the program and it’s really driven an awareness of health and safety among workers, particularly our young workers,” Mr Barrett said.

“Our Managing Environmental Health and Safety training course recognises the importance of supervisors and operational managers in building a safe-work culture. We get a good level of interest in the range of training courses that we offer, and to us this indicates there is a general level of respect for the value of adequate OHS management and the value that it has in terms of the fiscal impact that results from reduced injury costs,” he said.

General Manager of WorkCover’s Work Health and Safety Division John Watson said it was encouraging to see such a high standard of entries and large number of finalists. “I congratulate all of the winners and finalists for their leadership and commitment to sharing initiatives that have improved safety performance and efficiency in their workplaces,” Mr Watson said.

“This year WorkCover received the highest number of entries since the awards began in 2004, and winners came from a wide range of industries, including engineering, transport, boating and aged care.”

Open Houses at IYRS Bristol and Newport Campuses

October 28, 2011

IYRS will welcome two Open Houses at its Newport and Bristol campuses at the beginning of November. The events represent very important possibilities to speak with IYRS staff and instructors, see student projects, and find out something more about the skills taught at the school’s training programs that get students ready for fruitful careers.

IYRS logo

On the afternoon of Tuesday, November 1, IYRS will host an Open House at its waterfront campus in Newport from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. The waterfront campus at 449 Thames Street is home to the school’s Boatbuilding & Restoration program and includes two historic buildings from 1831 and 1903. The Newport campus is also the site of notable restorations, including the restoration of the rare 1885 schooner yacht Coronet.

The Boatbuilding & Restoration Program trains students to master the fundamentals of wooden boatbuilding. In their first year, students work in teams of two to restore a small plank-on-frame sailboat; in their second year, they work in larger teams to restore an historic sail or power boat.

On Thursday, November 3, IYRS will open its doors to the public at its 5,000-square-foot facility at the Franklin Street Marine Corridor, home to the school’s Marine Systems and Composites Technology programs. The event runs from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at 253 Franklin Street in Bristol.

The IYRS Composites Technology Program is targeted to meet the needs of the marine industry, but graduates have a wide choice of career paths since the high strength-to-weight ratio of composite materials pioneered by yacht builders is now in demand by many industries—including wind energy and aerospace. In the Marine Systems program, students learn to install, maintain, and troubleshoot the onboard systems used on classic and modern yachts and are prepared to test for American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) certification, a gold-medal standard in the industry.

The ISS Business Person of the Year award recognizes an industry leader who has made significant contributions to the yachting industry. The selection is done by a voting process of the Design Awards Nominating Committee.

Mr. Dick Boon regretted that he could not personally attend the awards ceremony but wrote in a personal note. “Designing yachts has been my greatest passion since childhood. Perhaps it is because the world consists out of more water than land, or perhaps it is because my ancestors lived on a small island called Texel, where they already worked in the shipping industry. I feel lucky because I was able to make a profession out of my passion. I am therefore especially pleased that my work has been noticed and  that I have been nominated for this award and I feel honored by the jury’s appreciation”.

Marnix J. Hoekstra says, “Mr. Boon receiving this international recognition is inspiring for our entire team. We are very proud and on behave of the Vripack Team we would like to congratulate Dick Boon with this well deserved award”.

Seakeeper appoints Tom Goeke as Chief Operating Officer

October 28, 2011

Seakeeper, Inc, a worldwide leader in gyroscopic boat roll stabilization, has appointed a new chief operating officer.  Tom Goeke most recently served as chief executive officer of Kloeckner Pentaplast Group, a multinational manufacturer of industrial films and coatings.

“Tom is the right man at the right time for Seakeeper.  With our sales more than doubling year on year, we are experiencing the transition from limited production to mass manufacturing and want to realize all of the benefits that such a transition makes possible,” said Seakeeper CEO Shepard McKenney.

“He has successfully run a large manufacturing company in a mature industry where absolute quality and efficiency is the standard,” continued McKenney.  “Besides bringing the skills we need, we are grateful to have the services of such an outstanding individual and look forward to working with Tom in the coming years.”

With no external appendages, Seakeeper Gyro Stabilization Systems are mounted inside the hull and produce a powerful righting force to virtually eliminate boat rock and roll.  The actively-controlled units are highly effective at anchor, zero and low speeds, as well as while underway.
