3rd “La Belle Classe Superyachts” Symposium Monaco 2011

January 24, 2011

International yachting professionals gathered at the Yacht Club de Monaco for the 3rd “La Belle Classe Superyachts” Symposium. They discussed various issues in the superyacht industry and reflected on the market of 2010, as well as looked forward to likely future developments in the superyacht industry.

Rationalisation beckons in 2011

Monaco, 20 January 2011: under the aegis of “La Belle Classe Superyachts”, a label initiated by the Yacht Club de Monaco to unite all those involved in the yachting industry and support club members in this sector, 45 delegates attended a dinner-debate at the YCM. Participants represented the complete luxury yachting chain (shipyards, brokers, designers, captains and specialists in yacht finance, insurance, surveys and law) and they came to take stock of the current economic situation in their industry.

Hosted by Bernard d’Alessandri, YCM Secretary General, and organised with the support of Only Yachts, this third symposium was also of great interest to the Monegasque authorities. Among those attending were HE Marco Piccinini, Adviser to the Government on Finance and the Economy, Paul Masseron, Advisor to the Government for the Interior, Jean-François Robillon, President of the Conseil National (Monaco’s parliament), Jean-Louis Bissuel, Director Maritime Affairs, Jean-François Tourret, Manager of Saint-Tropez Port, as well as Gian Battista Borea d’Olmo and Daniel Realini, respectively Managing Director and Operations Director for the SEPM (Société d’Exploitation des Ports de Monaco) which manages the two ports in Monaco.

After an introductory speech by David Legrand of Fraser Yachts, in which he described the current situation and gave his macro-economic vision of the yachting sector, everyone had an opportunity to express their views and put forward their analyses and experiences in a friendly and constructive atmosphere.

Resumption of Yacht Sales

“After a difficult end of year in 2009, 2010 saw a recovery in sales with transactions to the value of 2,575,866,000 euros, a +30% increase on 2009. And the average value of these transactions was 13 million euros,” began David Legrand.

The rise is explained by a significant drop in prices for the 30 to 40 metre vessels, generating a considerable volume of business as owners sought to quickly raise cash.

2010 also led to an adjustment in prices of second-hand boats. As a result, sales picked up again in a generally stabilised market, even though there are still discounts to be had. There is a better balance between the number of boats coming onto the market and those sold or taken off the market, so the situation is healthier which has led to a recovery, particularly in bargains.

It was also noted that the refit business has held up, although there are no longer the big renovations of previous years: further proof that owners are again more conscious of cost.

Espen Oeino observed that the level of serious enquiries for new-builds among designers seems to be higher than in 2009, a positive sign that should be confirmed by actual contracts.

“Clients have become more demanding and try to push the price to the maximum due to a lack of clarity. The Russian market collapsed on the Côte d’Azur, particularly between the end of 2009 and mid-2010, except for vessels over 35 metres,” reports Philippe Blattès, exclusive Importer for Azimut-Benetti (Monaco and France).

Among comments relayed from the Heesen shipyard, represented by Marketing Manager Sara Gioanola: “After the sale in December of a 51 metre to a Russian in his thirties, we have just signed another contract for a semi-customised 50 metre.”

Chartering at half-mast in 2010 but a fairer wind forecast for 2011

Contrary to all expectations, 2010 was a very difficult year for the charter market (30-40 metres), with last-minute or very late bookings at rock-bottom prices (-30%). The customary clientele preferred to take advantage of generous discounts in the second-hand market, and a chance to take out loans at very competitive rates to buy a yacht rather than charter.

Some in the profession fear these new owners (with a discounted product) will not be able to manage yacht maintenance costs (around 10% of the real value of a yacht per year). They are afraid the second-hand market in 2011 may become saturated, leading to a depreciation of the new-build sector which must maintain its production costs.

Some brokers remain optimistic for 2011, such as Kristen Ringsing (YachtZoo) who says his company has already signed contracts early in the year which was not the case at the same period in 2010.

Crews get a rough ride

Crewing is one of the sectors most affected by the crisis, with falling wages (-30%) and the number of staff onboard reduced, which is also having an impact on crew agencies.

Like the second-hand market, we have seen an enormous turn-over of personnel since last year,” says Jacques Conzales, President of GEPY (Groupement des équipages professionnels du yachting), and he adds: “Only the port and maritime authorities, and insurers can stress the importance of keeping crew on board to ensure not only maintenance but also security when the boat is moored up without a charter. We must not ignore the importance of having a properly trained seaman on board all year round!”

2011: A “pivotal year for shipyards”

“Many contracts signed in 2007-2008 are in the process of being delivered. They have enabled shipyards and all their suppliers to get through the crisis. Now everything hangs in the balance!” argues designer Espen Oeino.

Michael Breman, President of SYBASS (Superyacht Builders Association) and Sales Director at Lürssen, agrees: “It is important to reassure owners. The reputation and quality of production at the shipyards are decisive factors in the decision to purchase.”

“While some boatyards took advantage of the crisis to enter agreements or transactions, like Lürssen which bought a German shipyard or Oceanco that changed shareholders, for others 2011 will be a critical year once the final orders have been delivered. Rationalisation will continue in this sector. There will probably be more mergers in 2011. The present difficulties with order books for 2012 and 2013 should sound the death knell for speculative orders from those who sometimes built yachts before they had even been sold. This crisis will continue to streamline the market by reducing the competition,” affirms Olivier Blanchet, Fund Manager for Yachts (+40m) at BNP Paribas.

Yachting must step up its efforts to be recognised as an industry

“Some 53% of the world’s wealth is divided between the USA, Japan and Germany. For cultural reasons, and given what we have seen in Japan, Asia (apart from Singapore) is not yet a mature market partly due to cultural barriers and a lack of infrastructure. At present, South America is a more promising market than Asia, contrary to what one might think. Certainly, since 2009 and for the first time, the population of Asian “Ultra High Net Worth Individuals” has overtaken the Europeans. However, a yacht is still not an investment they make on impulse because they are yielding to a passion, as usually happens with this clientele. Today they think first about the way it is built before wanting to buy one. We estimate that there are around 100,000 people in the world likely to buy a yacht of +30 metres,” says Olivier Blanchet.

And he continued: “The average period of keeping a yacht is five to seven years maximum and in terms of value that represents around 12-15 billion for yachts of +24 metres.”

“We see yachting as an industry that must become more professional and better structured if it is to fully mature. The banks’ aim is to have an integrated approach: from the shipyard to the end user. The tendency is to ask those who are building the yachts for bank guarantees and the shipyards to ask for guarantees of payment. Under these conditions, legal contracts for construction, sub-contracting and credit is the key. The boat’s pedigree and the value of the maritime assets are just as important as the assurance given by the future owner on the means they have to buy the yacht of their dreams, but especially also their ability to maintain it properly with respect to nautical tradition. It is a relationship that must be set up for the medium term. It’s all about teamwork, from the designer and shipyard through the broker, manager, insurer, and so on; each has a role to play in the chain!”

“This sector is important when you remember that it generates 300,000 jobs in Europe. It is an industry on which people’s livelihoods rely: two billion euros in Italy and nearly a billion pounds sterling in GB. It is not by chance that the luxury industry is also interested in this sector; take for example the LVMH group which has got closer to Princess. These two industries focus on marketing and tailor-made products to meet the demands of a common clientele and thereby minimise depreciation of their production.”

“It’s true that this is an industry which doesn’t defend itself enough and suffers from a poor image. We need to communicate better! It’s up to us to explain that it creates jobs!”

Antoine Perry, Administrator at the Nice CCI (Chamber of Commerce & Industry) agrees: “We have identified 1,200 companies just between Cannes and Nice (excluding Monaco), that’s 3,600 direct jobs. Yachting is fourth for employment in the district [Alpes-Maritimes].”

Maintain its implied position as leader

“Monaco and the Côte d’Azur have assets. It is important to analyse and examine how we can lift our game to attract owners and respond to expectations about how best to exhibit their vessels when they go up for sale,” argues Philippe Blattès.

Faced with the current shortage of berths (many marinas being under construction), boat shows offer the best “shop” window. The Monaco Yacht Show helps generate sales; it is a solid bubble in terms of image and stability, and a barometer for the market. Proof of its success lies in the fact there were more than 130 yachts moored in the bay in 2010.

“For the last four to five years demand from exhibitors has been stable, with 50 to 80 companies on the waiting list who we are not able to satisfy. However, the size of yacht has changed with the  40 metre average in 2005 rising to 45 metres in 2010 and an increase in demand for yachts of over  60 metres,” comments Gaëlle Tallarida, Managing Director of the Monaco Yacht Show.

However, attention must be paid to the competition. This includes other shows such as the one at Fort Lauderdale, still an international benchmark, or the development of new marinas throughout the world whether in Liguria, where a dozen are springing up, Greece, Asia or Montenegro, or again the emergence of a new clientele and investment in South America, notably Argentina. “I was very impressed by the facilities set up in Montenegro in a former Russian naval shipyard. They already have a 100% occupancy rate in the summer and are starting to take 50 metre boats,” observes Gian Battista Borea d’Olmo, Managing Director of SEPM.

Laurent Perignon recalls: “The economic mechanisms which impact on industries producing upmarket and luxury consumer goods functioned in a similar way to luxury yachting during the crisis – and also we hope in the resolution – showing that the yachting industry is also subject to market forces. Clients are increasingly mindful of its evolution, rationalisation and professionalism.”

And Olivier Blanchet concludes: “Faced with a European market looking for a second wind, only environmental innovation to reduce energy use, with initiatives to unite players in the industry around a common goal, supported by greater transparency on prices and an ongoing search for quality, are likely to bolster development for 2011 and the years to come.”

Where: Miami, Florida

Rolex Miami OCR returns to Biscayne Bay in its 22nd edition of running. The regatta is the North American highlight on the winter circuit for the world’s top Olympic and Paralympic class competitors. The US SAILING’s Rolex Miami OCR was founded as the Miami Olympic Class Regatta in 1990 and promoted elite-level sailing during the winter months among Canadian and U.S. Olympic Hopefuls. Now the classic event has become a mainstay on the sailing schedules of athletes around the world.

International Rolex Regatta
When: March 25-27, 2011
Where: St. Thomas,  US Virgin Islands

Highlighting the Caribbean racing calendar with its unique blend of island-style hospitality, competition and camaraderie, the St. Thomas Yacht Club’s International Rolex Regatta will celebrate its 38th year in 2011. Rolex has been a partner since the very beginning. The event features IRC, CSA (Caribbean Sailing Association) handicap racing as well as one-design racing in a beautiful setting. One of the highlights is the race from Cowpet Bay to Charlotte Amalie Harbour and back, which offers competitors a great view of St. Thomas’ beautiful capital.

New York Yacht Club 157th Annual Regatta presented by Rolex
When: June 10-12, 2011
Where: Newport, Rhode Island

In odd-numbered years, this historic event follows the Annapolis to Newport Race and precedes Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex, traditionally attracting many of the competing yachts.  It consists of a two-day weekend series, and all eligible yachts may enter a separately-scored Around-the-Island Race on Friday. The weekend series is part of the US-IRC Gulf Stream Series, as well as the first leg of the 2011 New York Yacht Club Classic Series. Entry is open to yachts with a minimum LOA of 25 feet in IRC, Classics, 12 Metres or One-Design classes, and new for 2011 is a new Cruiser-Racer division on “navigator” courses.

Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex
When: June 19-24, 2011
Where: Block Island, Rhode Island

With over 44 years of tradition behind it, the Storm Trysail Club’s biennial Block Island Race Week presented by Rolex, has grown into one of the most popular sailing race weeks in America. For the 24th edition, 150 entries are expected and will divide into three fleets racing on three different courses. The event includes IRC and PHRF handicap, and one-design racing.

Rolex International Women’s Keelboat
When: August 27- September 1, 2011
Where: Rochester, New York

In 1985, Rolex supported US SAILING in establishing a women’s international keelboat championship. Over thirteen editions the biennial Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship has hosted over 2,500 of the world’s best female sailors. It has helped alter the course of women’s sailing and is universally recognized as the pinnacle of competitive keelboat racing for women. In 2011, for the second consecutive time, the Rochester Yacht Club will host the regatta.

Rolex Big Boat Series
When: September 8-11, 2011
Where: San Francisco, California

Established in 1964, the Rolex Big Boat Series takes place annually on San Francisco Bay. In 2005, Rolex became title sponsor of this prestigious regatta, which comprises extremely competitive one-design and handicap racing. Widely recognized as one of the most important sailing events in the USA, this grand-prix racing regatta attracts top competitors and boats from across the USA and abroad.

New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup presented by Rolex
When: September 10-17, 2011
Where: Newport, Rhode Island

The first edition of this biennial event, hosted by the New York Yacht Club in 2009, proved a huge success: international Corinthian competition between yacht clubs was long overdue. The 2011 event promises to repeat the excitement, with a fleet that includes the top six finishers from the previous event, ten invited international clubs and three American yacht clubs determined by a qualification series. The Invitational Cup is raced in one-design NYYC Swan 42s, which are identically tuned and equipped with supplied sails. Racing is over five days on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound.

Rolex Osprey Cup
When: October 4 – 8, 2011
Where: St. Petersburg, Florida

In 1996, the Rolex Osprey Cup was created to expand opportunities for women sailors to compete in match racing.  Now, with the approaching debut of women’s match racing at the 2012 Olympic Games, this event continues to provide a venue where aspiring Olympians can refine tactical skills, boat handling and teamwork. This annual regatta began its title sponsorship with Rolex in 2000 and returns to the waters of Tampa Bay this October, welcoming women sailors from all over the world.

Success at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show 2011

January 18, 2011

Drawing to a close yesterday, the 2011 Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show has proven to be popular with visitors and exhibitors alike. The new-look Show attracted 109,778 visitors from all over the country and abroad, 7% up on the final attendance figure for the 2010 Show and 2% behind 2009.  Together with the Outdoors Show & The London Bike Show, the total combined attendance number of visitors to ExCeL and all three shows is 140,164.

National Boat Shows (NBS) is confident that the rejuvenation of the Show with brand new features and attractions including the Watersports Action Pool and Used Boats Marina in association with yachtworld.com has helped to broaden the Show’s appeal and attract a more diverse range of visitors.

Used Boats Marina at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show

Andrew Williams, Managing Director of NBS is delighted with the success of the Show: “We have worked extremely hard to create a 10 day event that our exhibitors would be proud of and the response we have had from exhibitors and visitors is that the ‘wow’ factor is certainly back.  The stunning new east entrance giving a glimpse of the pool and some of the exciting action has given visitors a hint of what is to come before they have even walked through the ticket barriers.

“There has been a real buzz around the Show, the bleachers at the Watersports Action Pool have been packed throughout the week and it’s great to see the crowd getting involved with all the attractions. The new layout has, in the main, worked well and it has, without a doubt, helped visitors to navigate the Show more easily whilst giving it a fresh and modern new look.”

Watersports Pool at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show 2011

Paul Strzelecki, Chairman of National Boat Shows added: “We are thrilled with the re-energised Show.  This has been a fabulous first year of a three year plan to develop the Show for the visitors and trade, and we look forward to building on the successful performance of this Show.

“Although we have attracted a good number of visitors, sales at the Show have proven to still be challenging with exhibitors finding that final commitment sometimes difficult to secure.  Reports have been that the visitors to the Show are keen boaters and are asking the right questions, but sales are slower in the current climate.  The important thing is that this new-look Show is, once again, a world-class showcase and vital sales platform for the marine industry.”

The Used Boats Marina has proved to be a great success with the sale of more than 50% of the used boats on display and many sea trials booked for the remaining craft; the inclusion of used boats at the Show has encouraged a new type of buyer at the Show and also provided the opportunity for owners to upgrade their boat, once their previous craft had been sold.  The sale of a Beneteau Flyer 12 to a Jersey buyer allowed the previous owner to head into the Show’s South Hall (Boat Hall) to purchase a brand new Jeanneau 42 DS.

One of the stars of the Show has to, undoubtedly, be the Watersports Action Pool.  Following the impressive Show opening by Jodie Kidd and the watersports experts, the pool has seen wall to wall action with champions of all disciplines showing off their skills.  Importantly 1400 visitors have had the chance to get on the water and give it a try themselves, choosing from kayaking, wakeboarding, dinghy sailing, windsurfing and stand up paddle boarding, and the miniport boats for the much younger visitors.

“I genuinely feel that NBS has listened.  The fact that we are back exhibiting canoes, after two years away, is testament to the changes that have been made.  As a result of our activity, our dealers at the Show have made sales and we expect sales in the future as a direct result of this Show.” Andrew Dron, MD of Johnson Outdoors

“As a first time exhibitor, we have seen the benefits from the Watersports Action Pool and the SUP racing as Tushingham has had good sales and very good leads.  We are already looking to 2012.”  John Hibbard, SUP Brand Manager, Tushingham.

The Boardwalk has been a fabulous addition; enabling new exhibitors to take space, ensuring a great variety of boats are on offer for visitors to see.  This, together with all of the boats across the Show has successfully showcased around 1,000 boats for visitors to climb on board, view and compare.  Thirteen boats made their world debut here, including the Princess 32M – the biggest boat ever to be displayed inside the halls of ExCeL – and a further 23 were shown in the UK for the first time.

“The Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show has been productive, successful and worthwhile. It’s encouraging to see an increase in visitor numbers attracted by the new features and attractions. We look forward to seeing what else NBS will be planning to build on this success.” Paul Heys, Director of Key Yachting Ltd

“We have been pleased with the level of visitors to the show. Sales and enquiry levels have been good given the financial climate and we feel sure the industry has turned the corner and sales will increase.”  Richard Trafford, Wessex Yacht Sales and Dufour Yacht Dealer

The interactive activity provided by exhibitors on various stands around the Show has really added to the overall visitor experience and has also been a success for those exhibitors involved.

“We’ve been demonstrating how an inflatable lifejacket works, allowing people to try one on, inflate the lifejacket and learn how to repack this important item of personal safety.  Having this interactivity on the stand is a huge success and is the way we should sell lifejackets in the future.  Sales are well above expectations and we will be back at the London show next year.”  David Lewin, Secumar

FURTHER EXHIBITOR FEEDBACK

“The Show has been fantastic for the RYA.  The Expert Sessions stage on the RYA stand has been extremely popular, with talks and practical demonstrations to suit all tastes and abilities, and the stand has been buzzing all week recruiting members and selling our range of publications.  We’re set to beat all our targets not just in terms of matching the performance of the 2010 Show but for the last five years.  The whole atmosphere in the show has been very optimistic and visitors seemed to have really appreciated all the new features around the Show.” Paul Bayliss, RYA

“It’s been our first time exhibiting in the UK and the Show is been a great success.  We have sold all four boats on our stand and have two further confirmed orders.  We are looking forward to next year’s Show.”  Bill Manley, Teja Wooden Boats

“As a new exhibitor we have been very excited with the interest shown with the Volvo products. Quality of visitors has been good and we are looking forward to the 2012 Show. The layout and colour coding has made it easier for visitors and exhibitors to navigate around the Show and the feedback from visitors about the features has also been positively received.  Well done NBS!” Dave Hill, Engineering Manager, Darthaven Marina Ltd

“It’s been a fantastic Show and a perfect platform for us to launch the Range Rover Evoque in the UK.  We have had massive interest in the Evoque and our full range of vehicles and we look forward to returning next year.”  Sam Adams, Events Manager, Land Rover UK

“We are very happy with the new layout and feel it has been a great idea to have all of the boats in one hall.  There has also been much more animation that we have seen before.  Our only complaint has been the difficulty of controlling the number of people to our stand!”  Francois Renault, Beneteau

“This has been a very positive Show for Archambault with the launch of the M34 and continued interest in our complete range throughout the whole show.  Interest in the M34 one design fleet has exceeded our expectations and we are confident about the future of this class.”  Craig Smallwood, Archambault UK

“Sealine has made a very positive return to the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show.  The new format has created renewed interest from our customers and we have been very happy with the improvements made to the show by the organisers, National Boat Shows.  It’s been a good Show for us as we have met our sales targets and so we go away very pleased with our decision to return to London and very positive about our plans for 2011.” Nick Powell, Marketing Director, Sealine

“This has been a great Show, with a vast improvement on previous years including the quality of visitors to our stand.  We are pleased with the level of business achieved which is up on last year and feel there is a good feel and buzz about the show.” Rob Clay, Managing Director, TCS Chandlery

“It’s well reported that the industry is experiencing challenging times, but this Show has certainly given us a great sales and promotional platform. We have sold several boats to new, walk up, never seen before visitors and having the impressively positioned new 32m yacht inside the hall has added and extra dimension to our presence here.”  Chris Cleverly, Managing Director, Princess Motor Yacht Sales

“This is the first time we have exhibited at the London Show and we are really pleased. We have seen a lot of potential customers who are very excited about our new project.  The new layout has worked as has the features, in particular the Knowledge Box and Cruising Chute.” Ben Vaes, Marketing Director, Gunfleet Marine Ltd

The Cruising Chute has educated over 16,000 people, around 19,000 people flocked to the Knowledge Box to listen to and participate in discussions with 37 various speakers including Mark Covell, Mike Golding OBE, Tom Cunliffe, Tony Brooks, and Nigel Calder, 3,000 have enjoyed themselves at the Model Boat Pool and the Classic Boat attraction has, once again, been one of the most popular destinations for visitors.

Hanseyachts AG: Positive outcome at the end of Trade Fair Season

January 18, 2011

The international credit crisis has undoubtedly affected the major manufacturers of luxury goods, which naturally include sailing and motor yacht manufacturers in particular more strongly than the consumer goods industry. A few days before the beginning of the Düsseldorf boat exhibition BOOT, Greifswald-based Hanseyachts AG, which is one of the world’s leading and highest-selling yacht makers, now sees clear signs of a more permanent recovery in the water sports market.

“After many years of strong growth of up to 50% per financial year, we suffered a major drop in sales,” says Michael Schmidt, executive board chairman and majority shareholder of the HanseGroup. “Overall, we lost 50% of sales in the first year of the crisis – just when we had introduced new and very modern production-line manufacturing methods.”

The HanseGroup has learned its lesson and has freed itself from the crisis. Through the acquisition of the Dehler shipyards the company with its current four sail yacht brands Hanse, Moody, Dehler and Varianta is placed perfect in the market. And the well known Fjord motor yacht brand documents with the new Fjord 36 Open that this business field is more than alive.

As recently as last financial year (2009/2010), sales rose by 25% again. Now, in the new financial year, incoming order capacity has increased again by 25%, so that production capacity is actually fully utilised. Michael Schmidt attributes these increased planned purchases not only to almost all the markets served by HanseGroup worldwide but also to the new and very offensive model policies. Since

BOOT 2010 the HanseGroup presented 7 new models, all well accepted by customers.

The Group will introduce two further world innovations to an international trade public – the Hanse 495 (15,40 metre) and the radical motor yacht Fjord 36 Open (10,80 metres).

The company is consistently pursuing this successful strategy. For the next 15 months Hanseyachts AG has planned another 7 new models to stabilise this trend and to generate a stable growth and good profits.

Changes in French VAT Exemption for Commercial Vessels

January 18, 2011

As expected, France has published a change in its VAT law and policy relating to commercial vessels. Published as Article 70 of Law No 2010-1658 of 29 December 2010 amending Article 262 of the unified French Tax Code, the Code Général des Impôts, the change now limits VAT exemption only to those commercial vessels operating on the high seas. In a measure underlining the importance of the “high seas” requirement in this change, ships’ provisions supplied to inshore fishing vessels are now also excluded from exemption. The change is effective from 1 January 2011.

Since May 2004, France has sanctioned a VAT exemption for all commercial vessels (including commercial yachts) meeting three cumulative conditions: be registered as a commercial vessel at any Flag State registry, have a permanent crew and be earmarked for charter. This regime, often referred to in yachting circles as the French commercial exemption (FCE), meant that yacht owners and operators transacting in French territorial waters did not have to register for VAT and charge VAT on charters. Moreover, they benefited from tax-free fuelling and provisioning of their vessels. The regime proved popular with those yacht owners who didn’t wish to operate within the VAT system as registered persons.

The European Commission

The European Commission

However in March 2010 the European Commission launched infringement proceedings against France, declaring that French legislation in this area was not in line with wider European Union VAT law, as it unduly extended eligibility for exemption. The Commission cited, in particular the absence of any stipulation in the relevant French law (as opposed to EU law) that “use for navigation on the high seas” was a condition for the exemption of those vessels carrying passengers for reward or used for the purpose of commercial  activities. The Commission therefore demanded France change its legislation so as to comply with EU law.

The changes that France has now introduced are in response to that demand. But as tax-free commercial yachting was the main beneficiary of the FCE regime, it now looks set to be the main casualty of the change.

We explore the implications of this significant development in our next Yachting VAT Note, out soon. But should you wish to discuss the issues associated with this change in the meantime then please contact Ayuk Ntuiabane or Grant Atchison.

This is the 171st regatta and the oldest sporting event in New Zealand.  Held on Anniversary Day, the celebration to mark the region’s birthday and establishment of the new Auckland super city will be held on land, air with flying displays from the Red Checkers and Warbirds and sea with a huge flotilla of craft of all shapes, sizes and eras.  There will be elegant classic yachts and launches, rowdy tugboats racing up the harbour, some of the fastest boats in the southern hemisphere blasting down the harbour, radio controlled masterpieces and dragon boats and waka ama canoes.

“We have a spectacular day ahead of us with sailors of every age from more than 50 clubs participating for cash prizes and beautiful silver trophies with names that recall our maritime heritage and history from the 19th century through to contemporary times,” says Eric Mahoney, the chairman of the regatta organising committee and a very keen classic sailor.

Auckland is particularly lucky in that we have such a large classic yacht and launch fleet racing, a result of a decade long revival in restoring these beautiful boats to their original glory using traditional arts and crafts.  This has seen the formation of trusts to preserve our history thanks to the support and energy of people of great vision and passion.”

Among the classics that will be racing will be Thelma, the largest of the famous Logans, Ranger and Prize, Waitangi and Wairiki, Rainbow and Little Jim.

Mr Mahoney was also expecting a number of classic yachts from Australia to participate in a Challenge Series and a continuation of the racing rivalry between Wraith of Odin from Australia and Thelma. The classic yacht fleet with be lit up, Mediterranean style, at dusk, on Sunday, 30 January at their base in Viaduct Harbour.

A popular highlight will be the tugboat and workboat race featuring both vintage boats right through to the powerhouse tugboats used today.  The vessels will parade back to the Viaduct after the skippers have thrashed it out on the churning race course.

The start line, off Princes Wharf, downtown, will ensure spectators have a great view and there are excellent vantage points around the harbour including Bastion Point, Devonport Wharf, North Head, Orakei and East Coast Bays.

The flagship for the day will be the Royal New Zealand Navy frigate HMNZS Wellington with the Governor General and VIP guests aboard. There will be the Red Checkers and Warbirds from 11.30am and continuous entertainment on land with buskers, music, maritime displays, tours and the Seafood Festival.

Entries are open at www.regatta.org.nz or phone 0800 REGATTA (0800 734 2882). It costs $15.00 for centreboard yachts and radio controlled yachts to enter and $25.00 for tugboats, keelboats and multihulls.

The family of regatta sponsors is headed by Oceanbridge Shipping Limited, Auckland City Council, Ports of Auckland Limited, Classic Hits 97.4FM, Lion Foundation and the Spirit of Adventure Trust.

MIPIM: United Kingdom Country of Honour

January 17, 2011

Paris, 17 January 2011 – The 22nd edition of MIPIM, the world’s foremost real estate market, shines the spotlight on the British property industry by naming the United Kingdom as its Country of Honour.

MIPIM United Kingdom Country of Honour

MIPIM United Kingdom Country of Honour

“Since the launch of MIPIM in 1990, British real estate companies have understood and supported the idea of an international gathering of property executives and the importance of developing their business beyond national borders. When you consider that real estate investment in Europe in 2010 was valued at €103.5 billion* and €35.1 billion of that was in Britain, you get an idea of the importance of the UK market,” says Filippo Rean, MIPIM Director.

“The decision to pay tribute to the United Kingdom is in recognition of the contribution that the UK has made to the global real estate market during MIPIM’s 22 year history and the vital role the UK has played in the promotion of cross-border investment. One only has to look at the 2012 Olympic Games project to understand how the United Kingdom has brought together government departments, sports specialists and the real estate industry, to develop an Olympic site that is designed to invigorate the British economy while being economically and environmentally sustainable. It is this kind of forward thinking, even in difficult economic times, that encouraged us to choose the UK as our Country of Honour,” adds the MIPIM Director.

As part of the Country of Honour programme, a series of UK-focused events are scheduled to take place on Wednesday 9th March. The day will kick off with an exclusive British Property Federation and MIPIM private industry breakfast, bringing together 60 key players from both the UK and the international property and financial sectors. A conference about the UK cities, entitled “Making Regeneration Happen in the UK,” will look how do the cities and towns to make regeneration possible and on investors and developers involvement.

Commenting on the outlook for the UK real estate industry and the choice of the UK as Country of Honour, Liz Peace, Chief Executive of the British Property Federation says, “The UK is very much open for business. It provides a great environment for commerce and offers competitive opportunities for investment. We represent the interests of the UK property sector and we are long-term supporters of MIPIM, appreciating fully the benefits of the event and the great platform it provides for both our member companies and ourselves to showcase Britain and to meet our peers, financiers, and business leaders.”

MIPIM Launches Investor Quest

Inspired by the popular British television programme, ‘Dragons’ Den’, where entrepreneurs pitch for investment from leading venture capitalists and businessmen, MIPIM is introducing Investor Quest, its own UK Investment Competition.

A selection of developers, working in the UK, will pitch their projects to a jury of potential investors. The ‘business angels’ will then choose the project they consider the most worthy of investment. The investment theme continues with a MIPIM and IP Real Estate-hosted conference entitled ‘from stimulus to austerity: assessing the outlook for UK property.’ Speakers will discuss the state of the British economy, the attractiveness of investing in UK cities and the relative shortage of prime sites.

UK participants who have already confirmed include investors, Aviva Investors, Aberdeen Asset Management and Blackrock, together with the developers Bovis Lend Lease and Morston Assets Limited as well as leading UK cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester and the UK Regeneration Stand, showcasing UK regeneration opportunities and expertise. Key UK developments such as The Pinnacle, the 288m-high tower in the London financial district, will be showcasing at MIPIM. As part of the MIPIM Awards a special prize will be attributed to a UK real estate project.
