Superyacht Wally 118 Car Concept

August 05, 2010

Industrial designer Matthew Hockham, a recent graduate from the MDes Automotive Design course at Coventry University, has designed a supercar based on the superyacht Wallypower 118 brand by Stefano Pastrovich.

Like a nautical sibling of the superyacht Wally 118, the Wally supercar concept uses the trademark futuristic design, sharp edges, black glass surfaces and hi-tech grey tones of the Wallypower 118. The futuristic Wally car concept also features carbon fiber and teak, which is used extensively on Wally Yachts. The Wally Car concept aims to bring the essence of Wally onto the land and offer an exclusive user experience.

The idea for the concept resulted from Matthew Hockham’s fascination for Wally yachts and their radical looks. “As an automotive designer he saw a number of cues in these yachts which I felt would lend themselves to an automotive form. I thought it would be an interesting challenge to try and apply these features to a car design.”  explains Hockham

Hockham’s design development led him to take a lot of influence from the Wally Power 118 which he considers to be the most dramatic and characteristic of Wallys’. “The concept is not intended to be a ‘sports’ car in the traditional sense of the term, no Wally yacht is built purely for speed. They are designed to be supremely functional as well. I have tried to reflect this in my concept resulting in the shooting brake body style, which also echoes the side profile of the 118 yacht. It was important for me that Wally routes of the car was very recognizable in the facetted surfacing and sharp angles.”

Wally yachts are renowned for their extensive use of advanced composite materials throughout their models further exaggerated by their choices of colour and sharp forms.  “Again I have drawn this into my own design making use of carbon fiber in the frame of the car as well as the seats and interior features where the user regularly makes contact and interacts with the car emphasizing the futuristic user experience. Teak also features strongly in the design to strength the underline Yachting influence and give the car a unique ‘land yacht’ feel.”

Another key aspect of Matthew Hockham’s Wally Car concept was the environmental side. The power train is a hydrogen combustion engine achieving greatly reduced emission levels and cleaner travel. There is also the neat coincidence that the combustion of hydrogen produces water linking the sailing origins of the brand.

The Wally supercar Concept by Matthew Hockham is not the first vehicle to have been specifically designed for a superyacht.  For example, we bought you news of the Strand Craft 122 Superyacht and Supercar earlier this year.

The Porto Montenegro Marina actually welcomed its first superyachts last summer including the Feadship superyacht Predator however  its support facilities, and surrounding restaurants and luxury residences that are part of the development, are now also fully operational.

The support facilities at the Porto Montenegro Marina include on-site customs and immigration, 24-hour security, duty-free fuel, grey- and black-water disposal, and provisioning plus a Crew Club, featuring a gym, bowling alley, tennis and squash courts, and an Internet cafe.

Porto Montenegro Marina is located in the bay of Kotor in Montenegro, the largest natural harbor in the Adriatic, the Marina is also just a few miles from Tivat International Airport. It’s interesting to note that it was home to a Communist-era naval base, and that Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a walled city. The Porto Montenegro developers included modern-day facilities such as pool decks in the courtyards of the residences however also kept the historic elements of the architecture in mind.

The new marina includes the Porto Montenegro Yacht Club and some reminders of the region’s history such as an old dockyard crane was restored, that now sits at the edge of the main jetty. A maritime museum will be added in the future, showcasing other finds.

183 berths in the marina are available so far, including 89 for megayachts. Eventually there will be more than 600 spaces for yachts and superyachts, with about 25 percent devoted to superyachts alone. The largest yacht that can be accommodated: 100 meters (328 feet).

This fall, Compositeworks will open a refit facility across the Bay. Similar to its existing yard in La Ciotat, France, Compositeworks will address the needs of both power and sailing yachts and feature a variety of subcontractors.

America’s Cup television trials in Valencia highly successful

July 26, 2010

A strong sea breeze on the final day of the America’s Cup television trials concluded what has widely been regarded as a highly successful evaluation.

Over the past four days two high-performance monohulls and multihulls have been loaded with a plethora of cameras and microphones and put through match racing maneuvers to help find new camera angles and test surround sound format.

Racecourses were also modified by changing the percentages of upwind and downwind work to see if it helped keep the yachts engaged at close quarters.

“I’d have to rate the trials an unqualified success,” said BMW ORACLE Racing CEO Russell Coutts. “We plan to do this again in the coming weeks and months, but I think we found some things that work that we’d like to explore again down the road.”

One camera angle that got people’s attention was at the top of the mast looking down on the yacht. In HD format, the picture jumped off the screen with clarity and crispness. Those angles combined with the surround sound format helped create an immersive experience.

The trials were also used to test monohulls versus multihulls and the excitement they lend to television. A new yacht design is being created for the 34th America’s Cup, and concept papers have been issued to rule writers to create a monohull and multihull design.

The monohulls were the focus of the trials on Days 1 and 4, while the multihulls were featured on Days 2 and 3. Each design was sailed in light to strong winds during its time on the water.

Next month, positioning and performance data will be experimented with during the 1851 Cup in Cowes, England. The regatta features BMW ORACLE Racing and TeamOrigin of the U.K. in a series of match races aboard V5 America’s Cup Class sloops off the Isle of Wight.

“We have a long way to go still, but we’re very upbeat about this process,” said Coutts. “We really want to transform the next Cup to make it appealing and enthralling for television, and we feel we’re heading down that path.”
