The proSafe MD361 P features laser-cut doors to provide tight tolerance between door and frames and two 18mm steel pivots for exceptional security. The safe has been designed for DIY installation or professional retrofit and can be installed vertically or horizontally depending on customer’s preference or the available space. Velux 5 Oceans: Christophe Bullens buys sailing yacht Eco 60 Artech days before race

October 13, 2010

The VELUX 5 OCEANS has not even started yet and already Belgian ocean racer Christophe has been on an incredible voyage. After a nail-biting ten days, Christophe Bullens has confirmed he expects to be on the start line of the VELUX 5 OCEANS after securing a new boat for the race. Just five days before the start of the 30,000-mile solo round the world race, Christophe has bought the Eco 60 Artech from French yachtsman Jean-Baptiste Dejeanty.

The 49-year-old Belgian completed a 2,500-mile qualification passage in his original Eco 60 Five Oceans of Smiles in September. But his campaign was thrown into jeopardy early last week when his original yacht Five Oceans of Smiles was cruelly dismasted 15 miles off the coast of France en route to La Rochelle, home of the VELUX 5 OCEANS.

Five Oceans of Smiles was towed into Cherbourg with its mast broken into three pieces, a hole in the starboard side of the hull and destroyed sails. Since then, Christophe and his small shore team have been working round the clock to find another Eco 60 to sail in the VELUX 5 OCEANS.

But with just days to go until the race start, Christophe and his team have secured funding to buy Artech, confirming his place on the VELUX 5 OCEANS start line. The yacht will now be renamed and rebranded Five Oceans of Smiles in support of the Smiles charity which supports children who are HIV positive. Based at the Saint-Pieter hospital in Brussels, Smiles seeks to give HIV positive children the possibility to be born, grow up and live a normal childhood.

“It has been a real rollercoaster since the dismasting,” Christophe said. “We never stopped believing that we could be in this race and we fought to be on the start line until the end. Funding came through at the last minute and we are going to be on the start line of the VELUX 5 OCEANS. There was no way we were going to abandon the children – we are doing this race for them.”

VELUX 5 OCEANS race director David Adams added: “Christophe’s tenacity in the face of adversity is an illustration of what makes solo sailors so special. Many people would have thrown in the towel following the dismasting last week, but not Christophe. He has worked tirelessly to find a solution to making the start line and he has a fantastic Eco 60 to take on The Ultimate Solo Challenge.”

Artech was built for the 2002 Route du Rhum by Jean-Baptiste Dejeanty and skippered by Elie Canivenc as Leasecom. Three years later Dejeanty raced her with co-skipper Alexandre Toulorge in the Transat Jacques Vabre under the name Maisonneuve-Région Basse Normandie. Currently lying in Lorient, she is race ready and will be delivered to La Rochelle by the weekend.

Although he qualified previously on the original Five Oceans of Smiles, Christophe needs to satisfy the VELUX 5 OCEANS race committee that his new boat is up to the challenge of sailing round the world. Christophe will start with the rest of the fleet at 4pm on Sunday and sail a qualification passage to complete his final preparations.

The first ocean sprint of the VELUX 5 OCEANS is to Cape Town, South Africa. The race then stops in Wellington, Salvador and Charleston before returning to La Rochelle in June 2011.

Ship Equip reaches 1000th order for its SEVSAT system

June 29, 2010

Ship Equip has reached an important milestone in staking its claim as the world’s fastest growing provider of maritime broadband communications, announcing the 1000th order for its SEVSAT system.  The increasingly popular SEVSAT solution (which stands for Ship Equip VSAT) provides reliable and cost-effective satellite communications for a wide variety of vessels at sea.

Core markets for Ship Equip include megayachts, super yachts, motor yachts and sailing yachts along with shipping, commercial fisheries and offshore oil/gas.

Ship Equip VSAT on megayachts

Ship Equip’s 1000th SEVSAT order came as part of a recently signed large fleet contract for 67 vessels.  The milestone-reaching order culminated several years of accelerated growth for the company, based in Ålesund Norway with offices in Oslo, Houston, Seattle, Singapore, London and Reykjavik.   Since its initial launch in 2003, SEVSAT has gained steady acceptance and increasing momentum, to the point where today as many as 30 new SEVSAT and SETVRO (TV Receive Only) systems are installed monthly.  Ship Equip has recorded impressive revenue gains even during the recent global economic downturn, including 29-percent growth in 2009.

”We have seen a steady growth in orders since the launch,” said Ship Equip Chief Executive Officer Ivar Nesset .  ”It started with mainly Offshore Support Vessels (OSVs) and fishing vessels, and gradually shipping fleets have become a more important customer segment.  In offshore, the needs were partly dictated by the oil majors, who needed  broadband to transfer data from the oil fields to land offices.  Fishing vessels began to lose crew to the OSV’s and ordered VSAT to retain their experienced workforce.  In shipping, the picture is more mixed, with some ship owners installing SEVSAT to improve operational efficiency, some to enable online systems at sea and some to attract and retain a younger crew who are dependent on online communications.”

“The SEVSAT solution now consists of a variety of services suitable for different needs,” explained Ship Equip Chief Sales Officer Gilles A. Gillesen.  “VSAT no longer has to be a high end solution.  Payments from crew through prepaid services like Ship Equip Crew Calling contribute to keeping the cost of a SEVSAT system on par with dial up limited bandwidth systems.  This has been confirmed through high profile ship owners who now benefitting from VSAT as a cost efficient solution.  In addition, our ability to offer flexibility in bandwidth means that ship owners will never get locked into a capacity that is not right for their ships,” added Gillesen.

According to Ship Equip Vice President/Americas Stein Oro, the company’s rapid growth stems from providing the best solutions for its maritime customers’ needs. “We’re growing because we keep mariners in touch with the world onshore and help vessel operators run their businesses effectively and efficiently,” said Oro.  “Vessels in the markets we serve aren’t just ships — they are floating businesses at sea.  Whether it’s an Offshore Support Vessel working a deepwater gas platform, a cargo carrier or a fishing boat on the Bering Sea, these vessels are extensions of their land offices.  And they have the same critical communications needs,” he added.

Ship Equip VSAT

The new contracts add to an order backlog in excess of 200 vessels and come on top of 800 systems already installed and in operation.   Ship Equip is ramping up activity on several fronts to meet this increased demand.

SEVSAT FOR THE YACHTS

Staying online to check the stock exchange or other key land based resources is becoming mandatory in today’s business.  Always connected at a fixed rate means you can efficiently reach your land based resources.

With SEVSAT you maintain high quality telephone, e-mail and internet around the Globe:

• Use internet at sea for business or pleasure, for example; netbanking, stock exchanges, estate handlers, newspapers and media
• The crew and your guests can stay in touch with family and friends
• The crew can access land based maintenance services and possibly avoid unneccesary ship visits

SEVSAT improves safety

Safety is first as your crew can

• Perform medical diagnosis and first aid with real time advice from shore based doctors
• Update medical journals and have an accurate inventory of medical supplies on the vessel

From your home or office, you may connect with your vessel’s onboard systems and:

• Update and improve maps, security procedures, training manuals, IT systems and much more
• Monitor your vessels performance, log operational data, and fix
problems before they occur
• Save sending expensive experts to the ship by performing diagnosis and testing on components from land
• Transmit data to and from the vessel ensuring you are in touch at all times
• The vessel becomes an extension of your telephone system so your quick dial and telephony features become available when talking to the vessel
