The Neptune Regatta: A Race to the Equator

January 31, 2011

The idea of a race to the equator has been floating around for a few years but it took a concentrated effort by John Tudor and his friends to bring it to reality. As the power boats don’t have organised events, it was decided to incorporate them into the fold as well. So the inaugural Neptune Regatta was born and the team got excited about organising the World’s only sailing regatta and motor yacht rally, that centers around a race to the equator and back. Using various social networks and creating a web site quickly raised a lot of interest in the Singapore boating community, which sees 9 sailing yachts in two classes and 4 power boats of various sizes entering the inaugural event. Several early entries have withdrawn for various reasons.

The Neptune Regatta A Race to the Equator

The Neptune Regatta A Race to the Equator

Everything centers around the Nongsa Point Marina Resort in Batam, Indonesia and the event has been endorsed by the Indonesia Sailing Federation with huge support from the Indonesian Navy and other individual vessels for the committees use. A number of reccee’s were conducted to determine the accuracy of the charts, check the tidal currents, meet with island communities and choose suitable gates and anchorages in the prevailing weather conditions. The very experienced Jerry Rollin (Principle Race Officer) and Alex “Ferret” Voss (Safety Officer & Naviguessor) were appointed to make a tentative program and conduct the race.

After extensive research they came up with a course for the PY Class and Powerboats from Batam, Indonesia, down the Riau Straits overnighting at Karas Besar and Pulau Buaya before proceeding to the Equator to endure King Neptune’s wrath. The Racing class yachts will do windward/leeward courses on the first day and then proceed to the equator in one shot on Day 2 before joining the others at the Pulau Buaya anchorage. At the Equator a finish gate will be set on one side of the committee vessel and after King Neptune’s welcome to the Southern Hemisphere, skippers can choose when to restart on the other side of the vessel for the return leg. Further celebrations will be held afterwards on Neptune Island just south of Pulau Buaya (Crocodile Island) were the local fishing village is the closest form of civilization will ferry crews ashore and provide some cultural entertainment.

The return voyage to Batam for the PY Class and Powerboats is in two stages and the reverse order of the outbound leg. The racing class will return in one shot and have two further windward/leeward races of Nongsa Point Marina to finish their program. As this is the inaugural year Alex “Ferret” Voss is quick to remind us that changes will be made to suit the conditions along the way and for future years.

Nongsa Point Marina is situated at 01 degree 12 minutes North which is 72 nautical miles from the equator as the crow flies. Several passing gates will be set along the way were courses can be shortened if needed. Ever since the last race of the Singapore Straits the heavens above have opened up and virtually non stop rain has dampened the spirits and caused some inland flooding. However as this report is being compiled the sky has cleared and the wind has returned to hopefully blow the rain away before start time tomorrow.

The five entrants in the IRC class are Sarab Jeet Singh’s Sydney 40MOD Windsikher, Hellmut Schutte’s First 45 Aquavit 5, Adriaan Smit’s X99 Power Partners, David Ross’ Kerr 32 Kukukerchu and Stewart Mclaren’s Archambault 35 Men at Work completes the lineup.

Four boats in the PY Class include Chris Schuler’s Westsail 32 Mico Verde, Simon Piff’s Lavranos 10.3 Rainbow Dream, Simon Morris classic staysail schooner Sirius 1935 and Daniel Whittington’s Ericson 28 WYSIWYG.

Motor Yachts include Drew Gardenier’s Buehler 71 Hooligan, Madhupati Singhania’s Pershing 80 M.Y. Mantra, Leen Janse’s Sea Ray 47 Nehalennia and James Harris’ Sunseeker Manhattan 60 Something Special.

Tim Wilson’s 20m cutter rigged ketch El Oro was built for Baron Bich in 1972 as a cruising version of the famous French Whitbread RTW winner – Kriter, is skippered by Simon Blundell and crewed by Myanmar nationals will be serving as the start/finish boat and accommodating the media with all the trimmings of air conditioning and comfortable cabins for the duration of the event. So we can’t wait to get going…

America’s Cup winning trimaran USA 17 bound for San Francisco

January 25, 2011

USA 17 trimaran has only ever competed twice, but she sailed the races of her life to dominate the Swiss defender, Alinghi, off Valencia, Spain, last year and win the 33rd America’s Cup.

The extraordinary carbon-fiber machine is being loaded onto the freighter M.V. Star Isfjord this week for the long delivery trip to San Francisco via the Panama Canal. The freighter carrying both USA 17 and her extraordinary 223ft wingsail is scheduled to leave Valencia on January 29 or 30 for the 7,900-nautical-mile passage to the Bay Area.

The estimated arrival in San Francisco, dependent upon on-time loading, sea conditions en-route and transit time in the Panama Canal, is March 1.

The trimaran’s arrival will mark the first time that USA 17 visits the city that ORACLE Racing calls home. She was launched in Anacortes, WA, in August 2008, and after initial testing there moved to San Diego, CA, for a further period of training before being moved to Valencia for the 33rd Cup Match last February.

Measuring more than 100 feet long and 90 feet wide and powered by a 20-storey tall wingsail, USA 17 is the fastest yacht to ever win the America’s Cup. It has been in storage in Valencia since winning the Cup on Feb. 14, 2010.

With the ORACLE Racing team fully focused on laying the groundwork for its 34th America’s Cup campaign in 2013, the provisional plan is to continue to keep USA 17 in storage after unloading. An announcement about the vessel’s sailing plans will be made later this year.

“The handful of us privileged to sail on USA 17 would love to sail her again in an instant. I dare say all those who never had this chance would like to as well,” said ORACLE Racing skipper James Spithill.

“But the stark reality is that every aspect of the boat, every component, was built right to the limit so that for every hour’s sailing USA 17 required 20 hours of painstaking and rigorous maintenance. For the time being the team’s focus will be on the America’s Cup ahead.”

Antigua Sailing Week 2011: Anchors ahoy for the 44th annual regatta

January 25, 2011

Antigua is the sailing capital of the Caribbean and hosts one of the world’s top regattas, the 44th annual Antigua Sailing Week. Holidaymakers visiting during Sailing Week are in for a treat as this is the perfect time to celebrate the island’s culture and be swept up in the carnival atmosphere of this exhilarating event which combines the chance to see high-level sailing, beach bashes and shoreside partying. For committed land lubbers who’d rather be chilling out on the beach, there are of course 365 beautiful ones to choose from and plenty to see and do in the twin-island tropical paradise.

Antigua sailing Week 2010 - DICKENSON BAY BEACH BASH

Taking place from 24 to 29 April 2011, over 1,500 competitors including Olympic and Americas Cup sailors take part in five days of thrilling yacht racing around the tropical island. Each day of racing ends with a celebration as the yachties, locals and thousands of spectators all join in the revelry listening to live bands and tucking into sizzling barbecue. Dockyard Day is the finale and everyone comes out for the prize giving ceremony complete with a marching band.

The week of sailing ends with the legendary Dickenson Day Beach Bash with visitors getting great views of the vessels sailing in for the last time and enjoying the ultimate chillout session. Visitors can also explore more of the island with a full programme of excursions including a helicopter tour around Antigua, a day trip to Barbuda and a hike through the rainforest.

Located in the eastern Leeward Islands, Antigua and Barbuda has ideal conditions for sailing year-round and is the sunniest spot in this part of the Caribbean. Facilities are available to suit all kinds of vessels from mega yachts to skiffs.

The islands have a long association with the finest to have sailed the ocean waves including the great British naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, who was based there. The restored Nelson’s Dockyard is the world’s only operating Georgian dockyard and remains a haven for sailing vessels. During Antigua Sailing Week, the Dockyard is the party hot spot with beer tents open after racing and in the evening.

2011 Audi MedCup Circuit: “Audi Sailing Team powered by ALL4ONE” announce sponsorship and sailing yacht

January 24, 2011

The Franco-German team, managed by Jochen Schümann, becomes “Audi Sailing Team powered by ALL4ONE”, following a new three-year agreement reached with title partner Audi. The team have confirmed the build of a new TP52 in Sydney, with which they aim to finish among the podium positions on both the Audi MedCup Circuit and at TP52 World Championship.

ALL4ONE introduce both a new name and a new boat in 2011 as a result of reaching a sponsorship agreement with main sponsor, Audi. The campaign, led by France’s Stephane Kandler, will be known as “Audi Sailing Team powered by ALL4ONE”. The team have confirmed they are building a new TP52 designed by Judel/Vrolijk at McConaghy in Sydney, Australia. Their objective is to finish the 2011 season on the Audi MedCup Circuit in a top three overall position, and then will compete on the TP52 World Championship in October.

The new boat launch is expected to take place in Valencia in May in time for the boat to be ready for training prior to the first Audi MedCup Circuit competition event.

Expectations for Audi Sailing Team powered by ALL4ONE crew and skipper, Jochen Schüman, triple Olympic gold medalist and two-time winner of the America’s Cup, are high:

“First, we are pleased that the new Audi contract allows us to take part next season in the Audi MedCup Circuit. With the new TP52 our goal is to finish among the top three in the overall standings and win one of the season’s five events,” said the German skipper.

There will be no major crew changes from 2010 line up:

“Jochen Schumann (GER) will be our skipper and Sebastien Col (FRA) will continue as tactician. There is no reason to make big changes. The three-year collaboration with Audi and their confidence in our capabilities is great news for “ALL4ONE” and all this allows us to work in ideal conditions: continuity, a permanent base in Valencia, a media agreement and a competitive boat. This is the recognition of a great new team in 2010,” said Kandler, whose team will continue to enjoy the support of the French television group, Canal +, partners since 2004, by following of Kiel Woche, the 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit and TP52 World Championships.

The Franco-German campaign will particularly encourage the integration of young talent to the team, which, in the words of Jochen Schumann “it allows for German sailors in the Audi Sailing Team Germany, the German national sailing team, to train with us and participate in the boat deliveries. This is a great scouting opportunity which could see between 25 and 30 young sailors sailing in TPs over the next years and maybe even a skipper to replace me.”

“ALL4ONE” is a pan-European team founded and directed by Stephan Kandler, ex-crew member of the French America’s Cup syndicate K-Challenge, and Jochen Schumann, triple Olympic gold medalist and double America’s Cup winner, with crews members from France, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Holland and Italy.

Udo Schütz’ Container, known for its campaigns recently in the Mini Maxi class and further back as a winner of the Admiral’s Cup as part of the German team, will campaign in the TP52 class of the 2011 Audi MedCup with a new Judel & Vrolijk design. The team will make its debut at the first event of the circuit in May.

“It is a great opportunity to lead the Container team into a new era – a highly skilled group of people, some of whom already have experience in the TP52 class,” said Wieser. “We remain realistic and we know that competition is very strong but anything can happen during the short windward-leeward races.”

“It was a logical step for us, based on our experiences from the Mini Maxi class”, explained Team Owner, Udo Schütz. “There is no higher professional way of sailing on monohulls in the world – the perfect environment to showcase and develop our products.”

Schütz is a successful businessman whose state of the art technology is used in the construction of lightweight components for principally the aerospace and automotive industries.

The new TP52 Container is being built by Green Marine in Lymington, UK and is expected to be delivered in a record time of just four months. Container is the sistership to another new TP52 under construction at Green Marine, Niklas Zennström’s Ràn.

San Fernando Race 2011

January 20, 2011

Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club has issued the Notice of Race and Entry Form for the 17th edition of the biennial San Fernando Race, which will depart from Hong Kong on 20 April bound for the destination of San Fernando in the northern Philippines, 480nm away.

Organised by the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club under the auspices of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, this Category 1 Offshore Race starts in the spring grey of Hong Kong, with sailors quickly shedding layers as the fleet gets into the sunnier waters of the South China Sea.

The by-line for the race is ‘fun in the sun’, although all competitors realise that conditions can be testing for the most experienced of sailors and this blue water classic is never taken lightly.

The race starts from the Club Line of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, in the middle of Hong Kong’s famous Victoria Harbour, taking the fleet out past Waglan Island and then on to the Philippines. The current record of 49 hours 55 minutes and 12 seconds was set by Hong Kong sailor Sam Chan in 2001 and around 35 competitors will be trying to better this target come April.

While being a serious offshore race, an element of fun underlies the event, with prizes on offer for the biggest fish caught and the boat raising most money for The San Fernando Race Foundation, amongst others.

The Charity element of the race receives high priority, with proceeds from several fund-raising events going to the Full Gospel Faith Temple Orphanage in San Fernando. The San Fernando Race Foundation Limited, which is a registered charity in Hong Kong, oversees the charitable activities and, since 1995, the money raised has been used to assist the Orphanage in improving its facilities, for both everyday living and the education of the children.

Documents can be downloaded from the Race website, www.sanfernandorace.com

St.Maarten Heineken Regatta 2011: Superstar, Wyclef Jean to headline 2011 event

January 20, 2011

The Internationally acclaimed Grammy-award winning Wyclef Jean is slated to headline the 2011 St. Maarten Heineken Regatta!

Anyone who has seen a Wyclef Jean show knows the high energy levels and positive vibes that come along with it, and therefore the organizers of the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta are extremely excited to feature Wyclef Jean, during one of the biggest music events in the Caribbean! This free performance will close the 31st St. Maarten Heineken Regatta on Sunday March 6th, 2011 on Kim Sha beach.

St.Maarten Heineken Regatta 2011 Superstar, Wyclef Jean to headline 2011 event

St.Maarten Heineken Regatta 2011 Superstar, Wyclef Jean to headline 2011 event

Wyclef first gained fame as part of the very popular group The Fugees, after which he went solo in the late 90’s. He has teamed up with many of the world’s most well known artists, and has made significant musical contributions crossing between genres.

In the past year, he has been in the news as he initiated a run in Haiti’s presidential elections, in a bid to help improve life for residents. Although his political candidature was eventually denied, he continues with great success to raise awareness for the country, which suffered a major disaster just over a year ago. Through his foundation, Yele Haiti, he also brings financial support to the island. The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, for one, is pleased that he is continuing to perform his world famous live show.

Wyclef has a large repetoire of well-known songs which he will perform at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta. Heineken is sure that Sailors, visitors and locals alike will enjoy the fantastic and vibrant show. Nila Rambhadjan, Heineken Marketing Manager on St. Maarten adds “If you’re coming to the show, get ready for excitement! And make sure you know at least this Haitian Creole phrase: “Sak Pasé!”, as Wyclef and his crew will be asking the crowd “What’s up?” in the Haitian language.

St Maarten will be painted green once again, and with a Headliner like Wyclef, a great time is assured for everyone – especially with a nice cold Heineken in your hand, and your toes in the warm sand.

Rolex Fastnet Race 2011: RORC confirms huge interest in iconic race

January 20, 2011

250 entries within a week brings race close to limit Record-breaking rush to ensure a place

Entry for one of the world’s most popular yacht races opened at midnight on Sunday 9 January and by midday Monday, nearly 100 entries had signed up, with an unprecedented number doing so in the early hours of the morning. The trend continued over the next couple of days when the halfway mark of 150 boats was reached for the race which has a maximum entry of 300 boats. Within a week, 250 boats had entered.

“We expected an initial rush of interest because people were registering the details about their boat on our REMUS on-line entry system over Christmas,” commented the RORC Racing Manager Ian Loffhagen. “However nothing had prepared us for this unprecedented amount of interest in the race. We are obviously delighted at how popular the race has become with entries from all over the world.”

Officially the first boat to enter was Fred Mundle’s X332 Mardy Gras, only 50 seconds after entry opened. Another notable early entry is Ondeck’s Farr 65 which will be chartered by the British Limbless Ex Service Men’s Association (BLESMA).

Of the high profile race boats entered, the two canting keel 100 footers, ICAP Leopard sailing yacht and Rambler 100 will be the ones battling to take line honours in the Race. Mike Slade’s ICAP Leopard and George David’s previous Rambler had a huge fight in the 2007 Rolex Fastnet Race, with Leopard taking the silverware. However, this year, George David has chartered the Juan K designed Speedboat, re-named Rambler 100, which will put Mike Slade under a lot of pressure.

“The Rolex Fastnet is an iconic race,” said Slade. “We would not miss it for the world and we are pleased to see our American friend George David coming back with a new boat. It will make for a terribly exciting race.”

Also entered is the 2009 Rolex Fastnet Race winner, Niklas Zennström’s J.V. 72, Rán, hoping to make it two in a row, but he will have strong competition from RORC Caribbean 600 Race winner, Hong Kong’s Karl Kwok in his Farr 80, Beau Geste; 2009 Rolex Middle Sea Race winner, Andre Soriano in his Mills 68 Alegre, as well as a group of very competitive 52’ grand prix racers.

Leading this 50 footer pack is the 2010 Rolex Middle Sea Race winner, the TP52 Lucky, owned by Breyon Ehrhart from the USA and four boats from Germany who are making a serious attempt to win the race this year: Uwe Leben’s RP57, Scho-Ka-Kola; the SKWB’s J.V.53 Bank von Bremen and Haspa Hamburg and Norddeutsche Vermögen, both from Hamburgischer Verein Seefahrt.

There are 15 Class 40’s entered so far and the next biggest classes are the Sigma 38 and First 40.7s, with 14 boats each and so far, 14 different countries will be represented in the 2011 Rolex Fastnet Race.
