Riviera Yachts celebrates Christmas

December 21, 2011

There was a lot of Christmas cheer on board stunning Riviera yachts as hundreds of families across Australia came together to celebrate the festive season, rekindle old friendships and make new ones. From the Gold Coast and Brisbane to Perth, Sydney to South Australia; Riviera’s nationwide dealer network celebrated with the growing Riviera family.

R Marine Queensland hosted a beach party at Jumpinpin just north of South Stradbroke Island for 126 Riviera owners.
Dealer principal Randall Jones said there was plenty of Christmas cheer at ‘Millionaires Row’. “The weather made for a perfect day to celebrate the start of the festive season,” he said. “It was quite a sight to see 36 Rivieras ranging from 33 to 61 feet all anchored together.

“The Riviera kids had a ball playing on inflatable toys, while the adults shared a drink and a few laughs while viewing the collage of photos on display as they recalled the great experiences shared this year on many of the R Marine Queensland owner events.”

Riviera Brisbane celebrated the festive season on the lawns of the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadran at Canaipa, Russell Island with 50 Riviera enthusiasts.

Dealer principals Rod, Julie and Ben Crawley said everyone enjoyed a delicious spit roast and fresh prawns for lunch.
“It was a picturesque setting, with about 15 boats anchored in the bay,” Rod said. “We were all entertained by a live band, quickly nicknamed The Little Riviera Band, and even Santa popped in to hand out presents.  Peter Watkins won our lucky door prize which was a giant Teddy Bear in a Riviera hat.”

To Sydney and with the pop of a cork, the festivities began for 35 Riviera owners who joined R Marine Pittwater at Coasters Retreat otherwise known as The Basin for their annual Christmas Party which was held on December 2.

R Marine Pittwater dealer principal Bruce Mitchell said it was great to see the Riviera family get together one last time before Christmas. “We held a party on the beach so our owners could start the weekend with like-minded people.  We thought The Basin was a good location because it is part of the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase National Park and there were plenty of moorings available for the 15 Rivieras that attended the Christmas party,” Bruce said.

“The weather was good but cold so we had a fire raging to keep everyone warm and there were plenty of laughs and revelry as we sat around the camp fire reminiscing the year that was.”

R Marine Sydney hosted a spellbinding experience for 90 Riviera owners who enjoyed a magical day on the Hawkesbury River before enjoying a five-course lunch at exclusive waterfront restaurant Peats Bite.

R Marine Sydney dealer principal Michael Joyce said everyone relaxed over lunch and renewed old friendships.
“Conversation flowed easily as new acquaintances were made and shortly after lunch the fun factor increased as the crowd was introduced to professional hypnotist, ‘Stephen Spellmaster’,” Michael said.

Across to Western Australia where about 33 Riviera enthusiasts set sail for the Swan River to celebrate Christmas.

R Marine Perth dealer principal Brendon Grieve said this year the service team together with R Marine Perth staff and Riviera owners each hired a Foundation yacht for an afternoon of sailing. “A brief training session for the non sailors was followed by a race around Melville Waters and back through to the finish line in Matilda Bay,” Brendon said.
“The winners were Team RJ Vincent who took line honours, followed by The Boatmen and R Marine Perth at the tail end.”

Presentations took place at the Royal Perth Yacht Club overlooking the lights of beautiful Perth city. A barbecue dinner and drinks followed.

In Adelaide a fleet of 15 Rivieras with 65 on board braved the windy conditions as they entered the Port River for the inaugural R Marine South Australia Owners Club night.

Club secretary Glenn Spear said everyone had a great time on the Port River which has recently been named a Dolphin Sanctuary. “It was a fabulous first event, the self-catering system worked very well and thanks to the support of ‘Lexus of Adelaide’ who kindly donated the meat,” he said. “Judging by the quietness around the wharf the next morning, it seems everybody had a great time. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and hope to see more members of the Riviera family again at American River for our New Year’s Eve celebrations.”

Riviera’s dealer networks look forward to welcoming the New Year and have an exciting line up of owner events planned for 2012 across Australia and around the world.

Riviera offers 20 different models from 36 to 85 feet across four model series Flybridge, Sport Yacht, Offshore Express and Motor Yachts.

The Kestral 106 yacht, seen in the photos above and below has undergone successful sea trails. During the Kestral 106 sea trial, the yacht was joined by a pod of dolphins and a rainbow which is surely a good luck blessing for this newly launched superyacht. The yacht will be delivered soon and is currently for sale, suitable for both private ownership and as a charter yacht.  She is a comfortable and spacious ocean cruiser that is easy to handle and capable of long distance voyages or entertaining friends when day sailing around coastal waters.

Following classic lines, this new Kestrel design reflects a balance between traditional sailing yachts of the past, with design refinements that are influenced by the latest sailing technology.

New Pershing 82 motor yacht by Pershing Yachts to be launched in 2012

December 20, 2011

Pershing, brand of the Ferretti Group has unveiled details of the new and highly anticipated Pershing 82 motor yacht which they will launch in the Spring of 2012. The motor yacht Pershing 82’ is a contemporary reinterpretation of its successful predecessor, the Pershing 80’ yacht. The 2012 Perishing 82 motor yacht will confirm the Perishing brand’s ability to develop large-size luxury vessels without sacrificing sportiness and speed that distinguishes every Pershing yacht.

New Pershing 82 motor yacht by Perishing Yachts to be launched in 2012

New Pershing 82 motor yacht by Perishing Yachts to be launched in 2012

The Pershing 82’ yacht was designed by Fulvio De Simoni in close collaboration with AYT (Advanced Yacht Technology – the centre of naval research and design of the Ferretti Group) and the team of architects and designers of Centro Stile Ferrettigroup. The external profile of the Pershing 82 yacht is sleeker and more aggressive than that of its predecessor, thanks to the shape of the wider lateral windows which can be opened, providing more interior brightness.

The elongated superstructure of the yacht Pershing 82 enhances the new attractive forms and the introduction of a sun-deck with a retractable platform, which makes the yacht look slender and makes it possible to enjoy unparalleled heights, stand out immediately.

After the success of Pershing 74’, the Pershing 82’ returns with a sun-deck, that can be easily accessed from an automated hatch and a carbon steel staircase, a little mechanical masterpiece created by AYT in close collaboration with Besenzoni. The staircase is decentralized and drops automatically into the cockpit by electro-hydraulic control and automatically disappears upwards when closed, freeing the space in the cockpit.

The sun-deck is simple and functional: next to the retractable helm, there are two comfortable lateral chaise longue next to the pilot’s seat, in which a practical minibar has been placed. To complete the layout of the sun-deck at the bow, there are sunbeds with separate and folding backrests; for safety purposes on the sun-deck there are two lateral handles and a pulpit which blend in completely with the aesthetics of the superstructure.

Pershing 82 motor yacht by Perishing Yachts

Pershing 82 motor yacht by Perishing Yachts

All the other stylistic features that have distinguished the Pershing models, contributing to its worldwide success, remain the same: the large windows on the walls, the large retractable door that divides the cockpit from the saloon with electro-hydraulic control and the special system of fiberglass vacuum molding

Pershing 82’ motor yacht is 24.97 metres long and has a maximum width of 5.50m with 4 comfortable guest cabins (the master suite amidships, a VIP cabin forward and two cabins with twin beds at the bow) for the standard layout, or 3 guest cabins for the optional version, with a lounge-cinema room starboard, and two crew cabins with three beds.

Practicality, combined with design, reigns in the cockpit, where there is a sofa and a seat, which can electrically transform into a comfortable sunbathing area, a mobile bar with BBQ and a fiberglass table, which is the same colour as the hull, providing all that is necessary for social on board living.  As in other models of the range, even on Pershing 82’ the sun-deck at the bow is completely independent from the opening of the large garage, which has a folding bottom to facilitate the movement of the jet ski and a tender.  This comfort is completed by a retractable catwalk created by Besenzoni. In the wide cockpit one also finds the entrance to the sailors’ area.

The main guideline leading the stylistic choices for the large saloon is maximum space flexibility with refined elegance. At the bow, on the right, there is a big L-shaped sofa, while in the middle there is a sofa that can be joined to another one to form a horseshoe. The long-standing and prestigious partnership with Poltrona Frau, that designed the sofas of the saloon, inspired by the model Quadra, has been renewed on Pershing 82’. All the furnishings are made of pore oak while the flooring is made of oak covered in wengè.

On the Pershing 82’s sun-deck there is also a comfortable sunbathing area at the bow, with dinette and a table, providing complete privacy in an area that is entirely dedicated to relaxation.

Layout of the new Pershing 82 motor yacht by Perishing Yachts to be launched in 2012

Below deck, space is typical divided for a mega yacht, for example the galley is separate from the saloon and it combines with the crew area to allow greater privacy for the guests and the ship owner.  The galley, which is L-shaped and is completely separate from the sleeping area, has a dinette and a folding table, ensuring comfort and a decent life on board. The crew area, which is made of two cabins (one for the captain and one for a sailor) as well as a laundry and a bathroom, can also be accessed from the kitchen.

The standard sleeping area, made of 4 cabins, is a model of comfort and design.  In the master suite, amidships, we find the appreciated wide open-view windows, which marked the aesthetic course of the new Pershing range. The sinuous shape of the window draws in a generous passage of light that throws a pleasant play of lights onto the Poltrona Frau leather furnishings.

The VIP cabin, at the bow, with an en-suite, features an elegant central bed and two big lateral wardrobes, while the two guest cabins have a more traditional setting with two twin beds. All the guest cabins have a carpet.

The wrap-round light system, which was already used on Pershing 74’, provide indirect lighting with the embedded LED lights, distributed along the ducts on the concealed molding emphasizing the homogeneously diffused lights giving a modern style to the environment.  Moreover, all the internal steps have a LED step signal.

Besides the innovative solutions designed for the external structure and for the design below deck, the new Pershing 82’ superyacht was developed to ensure maximum performance at sea: two powerful coupled MTU 16 V M93 of 2435 mhp (1792 kW) with Searex SR140S surface propellers of ZF that guarantee a maximum speed of 45 knots and a cruising speed of 40 knots and high levels of comfort, besides the autonomy of more than 300 nautical miles. The Autotrim of ZF contributes to the high technological level of this vessel.  It is a system that is capable of optimizing performance at any speed automatically.

Pershing is among the leading international manufacturers of high performance open motor yachts, from 15 to 35 metres.

67th Rolex Sydney Hobart to start next week

December 20, 2011

26 December is normally a day of rest for those that celebrate Christmas feasts, giving a possibility to relax. Not so the crews of the 93 yachts currently aiming to be on the start line of the 67th Rolex Sydney Hobart. Boxing Day, as the Commonwealth nations call the second day of Christmas, is no time to be sitting idle. With 628 nautical miles ahead of them, the well-known Bass Strait ‘Paddock’, and a rendezvous with ‘a quiet little drink’ in Hobart, they have lots to do and to think about.

According to Garry Linacre, Commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, the organising authority for the contest, “This year’s race has attracted a great group of yachts with an exciting mix of brand new, recently acquired and well established boats that will provide strong competition for line honours and through the divisions. The race for the elusive Tattersall’s Cup for overall honours will again be absorbing.” All Australian states are represented on the entry list, and six international entries will sail for France, Hong Kong, New Zealand, the UK and the USA.

The newest yacht in the race is likely to be the Ker 40 AFR Midnight Rambler yacht (AUS), launched in September and co-owned by Ed Psaltis, Bob Thomas and Michael Bencsik. Psaltis and Thomas are best remembered in the context of the race as having won overall the infamous 1998 edition, on a previous iteration of AFR Midnight Rambler. By contrast the oldest yacht is the 79-year old 9-metre Maluka of Kermandie yacht (AUS), skippered by Sean Langman. Langman is one of the race’s current crop of true characters. Unlike Psaltis and Thomas, he may not have won the race overall, or taken line honours. But he entertains with his entries and tries as hard as any to realise the dream. In 2002, Langman defied conventional wisdom in bringing his 66 foot ‘skiff on steroids’, Grundig, home safely and in the second fastest time ahead of several larger maxi yachts.

Maluka yacht is not just the oldest, but she is the smallest. Dwarfed by the 100-footers in size and technology. Sailing yacht Wild Oats XI, the Reichel Pugh designed canting keeler, which set the current course record holder of 1 day 18 hours 40 minutes 10 seconds in 2005, is aiming for a sixth line honours win from seven starts. Up against her is Anthony Bell’s similar-sized Investec Loyal superyacht. What Investec Loyal lacks in winning pedigree compared to super yacht Wild Oats, she makes up for with an eclectic crew that accommodates some of the world’s best sailors and a number of Australian sporting celebrities, including the two-time Rugby World Cup winner Phil Kearns and former world title boxer Danny Green.

Also on the Investec roster is the American navigator, Stan Honey. A Volvo Ocean Race winner with the yacht ABN AMRO One, Honey has raced on many of the sailing world’s recent winning and record-breaking projects. Almost oddly, he has only attempted the Rolex Sydney Hobart once before in 2006; “I’ve only raced in one Hobart race in the past, 2006, in which I navigated ABM AMRO One.  We had just taken the lead from Wild Oats, when we lost our mast. Maximus (now Investec Loyal) was also dismasted that same night, at about the same time.  So I have started but never finished a Hobart Race.” For the man that navigated the trimaran Groupama 3 to a record breaking round the world run in 201O, the Rolex Sydney Hobart remains one of the most prestigious and toughest of the major ocean races. Honey says; “I am delighted to have the opportunity to participate in another race.  The combination of the East Australian Current and the rapidly changing weather contribute to the challenge of navigating the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.”

Honey is not the only American to be racing this year. Rives Potts’ 48-foot Carina yacht (USA) is making the pilgrimage from the east coast of the USA via the 2011 Transatlantic Race, the Rolex Fastnet and a few places in between, “Carina is being delivered to Australia by my son Walker and my nephew Rives. She has just left Bora Bora with around 3,000 miles to go and should be in Sydney by mid-December.” Beneath this seeming air of nonchalance, Potts comes to the fray with some form in 600-mile offshore tests of seamanship. He was part of Ted Turner’s Tenacious crew that won the 1979 Fastnet. And, whilst she has classic lines, Carina has proved adept at performing offshore to her handicap, winning the 2010 Bermuda Race and her class in this year’s Rolex Fastnet.

Like Honey, Potts is looking forward to taking on the southern hemisphere’s most famous race, “this is my first Rolex Sydney Hobart but from what I have read and from all of the stories I have heard from my sailing mates who have done the race before, it will most likely be rough and cold. We would like to sail a good, safe race and to push as hard as we can. Winning would be the best, but I am sure that every other competitor feels the same.”

Another yacht participating this year with half an eye on the main prize is Chris Bull’s sailing yacht Jazz. Remarkably for such a seasoned campaigner, well-known in the northern hemisphere, Bull has not yet managed to win one of the big 600-mile offshore races, helping show how remarkable are the achievements of those that do. Bull has come mighty close. At last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart he comfortably won his class, but was ousted from pole position for the main prize by Geoff Boettcher’s Secret Men’s Business 3.5. The second time this has happened in this race. He hopes to go one better this year. The Jazz crew comprises a number of foreign nationals aiming to help him in this goal. Amongst them is Maltese sailing-legend Christian Ripard. Ripard is another coming to race with form and ambition, and, may prove the lucky charm Bull needs. In October, Ripard won the 606-nautical mile Rolex Middle Sea Race having finished second in the 2010 edition. Ripard was in Bull’s crew in the Rolex Sydney Hobart last year. Could history be about to repeat itself?

Jazz yacht is a Cookson 50. In recent years, much of the pre and post race comment has been about yachts of around this size with some highly competitive entries, including a number of optimised TP52s. The 84-year Syd Fischer may be the elder statesman of the Rolex Sydney Hobart, but with a fourth place in the 2008 race on his TP52 Ragamuffin (AUS), he demonstrated the qualities of these yachts and his determination not to be outdone by younger competitors. Amongst the five TP52s entered this time, two are racing under the colours of Hong Kong adding a touch of Asia to proceedings.

Anthony Day’s Ffreefire features a crew that lives or has resided in Hong Kong or Singapore and is one that has been sailing offshore together for many years on this boat. With Russ Parker, Rear Commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, onboard the team relishes the challenge of the race and is hoping for a convincing performance. The second Asiatic TP52 is Geoff Hill’s Strewth, which finished third overall in the 2010 Rolex China Sea Race. Hill is harnessing the undoubted navigational talents of Lindsey May, who was the winning skipper of Love & War in 2006.

Whilst any number of sailors and adventurers will be setting out on their first Rolex Sydney Hobart, including one of Australia favourite daughters, around the world yachtswoman Jessica Watson, who at 18 is leading a crew whose average age is just 19, kudos should be given to Tony Cable, who plans to embark on his 46th race. That is two-thirds of the total number Rolex Sydney Hobarts so far held, and certainly suggests that Cable is not one who enjoys a leisurely Boxing Day.

The 2011 Rolex Sydney Hobart starts from Sydney Harbour at 13.00 AEDT on 26 December.

Yarmouth Harbour’s historic pier opened to large sailing and motor yachts

December 19, 2011

Yarmouth Harbour has announced that one of its oldest and longest wooden piers in the UK will be open for large sailing and motor yachts from January 2012. The pier is currently being visited thanks to its popular paddle steamer, Waverley and the SS Balmoral. Yarmouth is in a superb position at the Western end of the Solent. Its natural deepwater harbour is well-known for its protected entrance, stunning surroundings, and air of tranquillity.

Yarmouth Harbour

Yarmouth Harbour

The 190-metre Pier was opened on 19th July 1876 and has suffered collisions, renovations, and gribble damage during its 135-year history.

In 1975, the pier was listed as Grade 2 structure, but by 1980 needed complete restoration in order to remain open. The pier was once more in need of significant maintenance by the summer of 1993 when £600,000 was spent extending the life of the pier by an estimated 40 to 50 years. But the pier needed yet more work in July 2007, when it was confirmed that the piles were being eaten away by gribble and shipworm, luckily a £450,000 grant was obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund to rescue the pier and it was reopened in April 2008 by Alan Titchmarsh.

Yarmouth´s Pier

Yarmouth´s Pier

Because of the Pier’s age and history, and its grade II listing; alternatives to timber piles are not permitted, so the 100 piles are made from Greenheart timber, one of the hardest tropical hardwoods, but the piles are nevertheless eaten away between the high and low water levels, which results in all piles being replaced every 15-20 years.

Yarmouth Harbour has completed more than £1.4 million worth of improvements this year. New walk-ashore pontoons were installed to provide greater accessibility for residents and visitors. A number of the new walk-ashore pontoons offer finger berths and all walk-ashore bookings will be given finger berths, which offer greater convenience and privacy.

In building these berths, Yarmouth became the first harbour to make significant use of Kebony, a treated softwood Decking, instead of the less environmentally friendly Balau. The fuel berth has been moved near the harbour entrance and now accommodates four yachts, rather than two. Additional improvements include greater electrical and water capacity and improved Wi-Fi coverage.

Yarmouth harbour is a perfect sailing destination for a relaxing get-away. The harbour’s modern facilities provide an ideal base from which to explore this relaxing, historic town, famed for its quaint streets and excellent pubs and restaurants. Yarmouth’s location is also a great base for exploring the island beyond, such as The Needles Battery, Yarmouth Castle, Tennyson Down, and Alum Bay.
