Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race: Race 11 from Panama to New York started last night

May 15, 2012

Race 11 of the popular Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race from Panama to New York was kicked off at 2330 UTC last night. Following their transit through the well known Panama Canal last week, the fleet returned at sea.

Race 11 from Panama to New York started

Race 11 from Panama to New York started

Ahead lies around 2,100 miles starting with four days of hard upwind sailing before breaking out of the Caribbean Sea into the Atlantic Ocean. Like in previous races, in Race 11 there is a Scoring Gate and the first three teams through gets awarded vital additional points. There is also an Ocean Sprint further on in the Race.

“A textbook Le Mans start in the burning embers of a perfect Caribbean sunset was how we started our race to New York,” says Singapore skipper Ben Bowley in his 0600 report to the Race Office.

The Race Committee appointed Richard Hewson  from Gold Coast Australia as lead skipper for the Le Mans start around 60 miles off shore. For this type of start, all ten yachts line up on a bearing, sailing a specific course.  After the start, yachts must maintain their course for ten minutes before changing their sail plan.

The fleet remains packed together with only few miles separating them. While Welcome to Yorkshire managed to hoist and fully power up the Yankee 1 and staysail in 1 minute 37 seconds, Qingdao suffered from a winch jam at the wrong moment.

Both Australian entries had a tussle with Geraldton Western Australia currently ahead of Gold Coast Australia. The top three are currently Dutch entry De Lage Landen, Northern Irish Derry-Londonderry with Geraldton Western Australia in third place.

Despite nearly 35,000 miles raced at sea, the fleet is ready for another challenge ahead. Derry-Londonderry skipper Mark Light explains, “It is now great to finally be out on the ocean and racing again, feeling the freedom that only sailing can offer. We are now heading at pace, towards a fantastic race finish some 2,000 miles away in New York City.”

Two superyacht marinas in Croatia acquired by D-Marin Marinas Group

May 15, 2012

Following the Sibenik Mandalina Marina acquisition, one of Turkey´s biggest investors in Marina operations, Doğuş Group, has now acquired other two superyacht marinas in Croatia. Marina Dalmacija as well as Marina Borik were officially taken over by the Group at a ceremony taking place in Croatia, where the Group signed a share takeover agreement.

Marina Dalmacija in Croatia

Becoming both the shareholder, developer and operator of the marinas in Zadar, the Group acquired the shares from one of the region’s prominent businessmen Zdenko Zrilic.

Regarding the acquisition, “With our signature today, we are delighted to place Marina Dalmacija and Marina Borik under the roof of the D-Marin Group of Marinas. Our goal is to create an international chain of marinas under the D-Marin brand and extend Doğuş Group’s concept of service quality to a larger area in the Mediterranean” said Doğuş Group CEO Hüsnü Akhan. A total of €17 million worth of additional investment will be made in Marina Dalmacija, Croatia’s biggest marina, entailing modernisation, and construction of commercial and tourist facilities.

Doğuş Group first moved into the marina industry in 2003 with D-Marin Turgutreis Marina. In line with its goal of growing in the marina industry, it made D-Marin Didim operational in 2009. In the third quarter of 2010, the Group acquired Port Göcek and added it to the D-Marin Group of Marinas under the name of D-Marin Göcek. The construction of D-Marin Dalaman, in project design phase at the moment, is scheduled to start within this year.

While abroad, following its partnership agreement with Nautical Centre Prgin (NCP) in 2009, it took over the operation of Mandalina Marina in Sibenik, Croatia which has a very crucial position and potential in the Mediterranean basin. Upon the Group’s acquiring 76% of the shares of the marina and becoming the main shareholder as of September 2011, the marina started serving under the name D-Marin Mandalina.

Doğuş Group continues to develop its expertise acquired in marina investments and operations with its projects in Croatia. Marina Dalmacija acquired by Doğuş Group has a berthing capacity of 1200 in-water slips and 500 dry dock berths on land while Marina Borik has 200 in-water slips and 50 dry dock berths on land. The Group will develop and renovate the existing marinas in Zadar and will be operating the entire marina complex.

Along with these two new investments, Doğuş Marinas Group’s total berthing capacity in Croatia has exceeded the capacity of marinas in Turkey.

D-Marin flag will be flying in Croatia’s biggest marina

Doğuş Group will be making additional investment for modernisation and the construction of commercial and tourist facilities in the Marina Dalmacija marina, the highest capacity marina in the Eastern Mediterranean basin with a total of 1700 in-water slips and dry dock berths on land. In this project where the additional investment is planned to be €17 billion, the entire investment will be undertaken by Doğuş Group. Only 5 km from the Zadar International Airport, Marina Dalmacija is at an advantageous position due to this feature.

Doğuş Group CEO Hüsnü Akhan: “We are moving forward with determined strides toward our claim and goal of being a regional player.”

In a statement he made regarding the issue, Doğuş Group CEO Hüsnü Akhan has said the new investments they have undertaken in Croatia are the most concrete evidence to their strategy of becoming a global player in the region in the marina and yacht industry. “Croatia is the world’s most dynamic market in the area of marina and yacht industry. Its influence is increasing more and more in the Mediterranean basin and it is a very strong player as regards its experience and potential in this area. Our new investments in Croatia are testimony to our successes in the international arena as is the case with D-Marin in Turkey. As Doğuş Group, we are moving forward with determined strides toward our claim and goal of being a regional player” added Akhan.

Stating that they were delighted to bring Dalmacija and Borik marinas under the roof of D-Marin Group of Marinas, “Our goal is to create an international chain of marinas under the D-Marin brand and extend Doğuş Group’s concept of service quality to a larger area in the Mediterranean. Croatia is a very appropriate location for our goals. We will continue to watch for new investment opportunities in this region” said Doğuş Group CEO Hüsnü Akhan.

10th American Superyacht Forum to start next week

May 14, 2012

The American Superyacht Forum, running from 21 to 23 May, starts next week. Its programme is expected to be one of the most ground-breaking as well as extraordinary events in its ten-year history.

ASF 2011

ASF 2011

The final speakers have now been confirmed by the organisers, Superyacht Events. Some of these names are returning speakers, but others are brand new to thesuperyacht events circuit and are expected to inject a fresh perspective into the marketplace.

One such new name is Ash Rajan, head of investment policy at Merrill Lynch’s Ultra High Net Worth investment office. Rajan will speak during the second session of day one: Realising Domestic Potential and Intelligent ClientTargeting. Drawing on his specialist experience working closely with anelite corps of financial advisors and delivering asset management solutions to UHNWI private clients and foundations, Rajan will provide an insight into this esoteric area of the industry. Backed up by figures and trends on UHNWIs from Merrill Lynch research he will ask, ‘how can the superyacht industry take advantage of such information for growth?’

George Whitehouse - ASF speaker

George Whitehouse - ASF speaker

The next speakers in the final wave confirmed is vice president at Rybovich Superyacht Marina and Refit, George Whitehouse and Derek Smith from yacht management consultancy, Hill Robinson. In day one’s final session entitled, The Quality Control Conundrum – Achieving Better Service and Support Focus, Whitehouse and Smith will join Dean Du Toit from National Marine and Graeme Lord at Fairport Yacht Support in a panel discussion. Together they will look at both sides of the quality control debate: What do the buyers need in order to better satisfy their owners, and what do the sellers need in order to better serve this group? Whitehouse is a veteran of the superyacht industry, having been a captain for 29 years, and laying claim to building one of the first 45m Trinitys, Bellini, as well as running other notable superyachts such as Helios, Kiss the Sky and most recently Floridian, (ex Aussie Rules).

Renowned superyacht designer Luiz de Basto

Renowned superyacht designer Luiz de Basto

Launching matters for day two, and featuring our final role call of speakers, are John Allen, president of Quantum Marine Engineering and Luiz de Basto, president and chief designer at DeBasto Designs. Allen and de Basto join previously announced speaker Bill Blount from Donald L. Blount & Associates for day two’s opening session, America’s Technical Challenges and Opportunities. Here, delegates will get an outline from the speakers, as representatives of the different stages in superyacht building, of what clients asking for and how the American industry can better serve their needs. Improving technology, while not overcomplicating it beyond use, is a key aim of this session. The two speakers are part of the fabric of the industry, with De Basto a leader in superyacht design for three decades, designing more than 200 yachts for over 40 yards globally. Meanwhile, Allen launched Quantum MarineEngineering Inc. in 1985; which now based in Fort Lauderdale, supplies motion control stabilisers and hydraulic services, as well as its own range of stabilisers and hydraulic power units.

Speaking about the impending forum, Georgina Lucey, events director at Superyacht Events, said: “We are thrilled to welcome such a high calibre of speakers for our tenth anniversary of ASF. Every ASF is exciting but this one is going to be exceptional; in 2011 we started talking about the change needed to invigorate the American superyacht industry. This year we will be building on those discussions and taking more practical steps towards change. The seven sessions over three days, culminating in our ever popular sports fishing tournament, are going to be intensive but invaluable for our delegates.”

Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust as Official Race Charity for J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race

May 14, 2012

For the second time, the popular J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race is delighted to present the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust as its Official Race Charity.

The Trust has entered four boats, providing 25 young people in recovery from cancer the opportunity to compete in the Race. They will be joined for the Race by Trust Patron, Ellen MacArthur along with Race first-timer, DJ Rob da Bank. Ellen MacArthur will be racing with seven of the Trust’s young people on the elegant 90ft sloop Dark Star, generously lent to the Trust for the Race by owner Ed Stacey.

Ellen explains, “Everyone at the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is thrilled that the owner of Dark Star has welcomed us on board for the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race. This will be a completely different experience for the young people in recovery from cancer. I hope through all the weekend’s fundraising initiatives that we can help many more young people in their recovery from the illness in the future.”

Last year the Trust raised an incredible £57,547 through their involvement as the Official Charity of the Round the Island Race. Competitors thinking of fundraising for the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust can do so in a number of ways this year.

•       By entering a boat in the ‘Charity Challenge’. The ISCRS and IRC rated entries that are fastest on corrected time and raise a minimum of £250 will receive an additional £1,000 donation, courtesy of J.P. Morgan Asset Management, for their chosen charity.

•       By buying a virtual mile of the Race through the ‘Buy a Mile’ or by choosing which of the incredible young people racing one would like to support, otherwise there is also a possibility to buy Ellen MacArthur or D.J. Rob da Bank’s virtual miles from as little as £10.

The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust takes young people aged 8 – 24, who are recovering from cancer and other serious illness on sailing trips throughout the summer.  These trips can rebuild the confidence often lost through long periods in hospital, giving the young people a chance to test themselves in a safe and supportive environment.

The Radio 1 DJ and Bestival organiser, Rob da Bank, will be joining the Trust’s crew aboard Moonspray, a GibSea 44.  Joining Rob will be the Isle of Wight Radio breakfast presenter Paul Topping, who will broadcast live from the boat throughout the Race.

J.P. Morgan employees from Bournemouth have their own unique way of fundraising for the Trust. For the sixth year, they will be competing in their very own Round the Island Race using pedal power.  Last year the cyclists raised an incredible £18,622 pedalling the 62 miles around the Island. Their challenge is to beat the fastest yacht to the finish line.

Other exciting ways to get involved with the Trust in the Race Village this year include a Sports Village, where visitors can have a go with the rowing machine, javelin, badminton and a Wii station.

The easiest way to add to the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust’s fundraising total is through ‘Text to Donate’, just text EMCT00 £5 to 70070. Every penny goes straight to the Trust.
