Nanni Moretti Named President of the Jury of the 65th Cannes Film Festival, May 16-27, 2012

March 29, 2012

Famous Italian actor as well as director, Nanni Moretti has been named President of the Jury of the 65th Festival de Cannes, which is to take place from May 16 to 27, 2012.

Accepting the invitation, the Italian actor and director said: “This is a real joy, an honour and a tremendous responsibility to preside over the jury of the most prestigious festival of cinematography in the world, a festival that is held in a country where film has always been treated with interest and respect.

As a director, I was always very moved when my films were presented at the Festival de Cannes. I also have very happy memories of my experience as a jury member during the fiftieth anniversary season, and of the attentiveness and passion that went into the jury’s viewing and discussion of all the films.

As a spectator, fortunately I still have the same curiosity that I had in my youth and so it is a great privilege for me to embark on this voyage into the world of contemporary international film.”

Nanni Moretti was born in 1953 in Brunico, Italy. After several short films, he signed his first feature, Io Sono un Autarchico (I am Self Sufficient) in 1976, and in 1978, he was selected in Competition in Cannes, with Ecce Bombo.

International film critics were quick to pick up on this young director whose corrosive wit was directed toward a subtle and political analysis of contemporary society. His films were frequent prize winners in festivals around the world: in 1981, the Special Jury Prize in Venice was awarded to Sogni d’Oro (Sweet Dreams) and La Messa è finita (The Mass is Ended) won the Silver Bear in Berlin in 1986.

A director in constant evolution, an auteur with a personal touch, and an accomplished artist, Nanni Moretti has continued to surprise, with Caro Diario (Dear Diary) presented in Competition at the Festival de Cannes in 1994 (where it won the Prize for Best Director) and with La Stanza del figlio (The Son’s Room), which won the Palme d’Or in 2001 and was a box office hit. Then came Il Caimano (The Caiman) (2006), a film that harshly criticizes the aberrations of Italian political life in the era of Silvio Berlusconi.

An iconic actor in most of his own films, Moretti has also played in the Taviani brothers’ Padre Padrone (Father and Master) (1977), and worked with Luchetti, Mazzacurati and Calopresti. A producer and distributor as well as a director, he founded the Sacher Film production company in 1986. In 1991, he opened the Nuovo Sacher cinema in Rome, a cinema dedicated to the release of films from around the world. Since 1996, he has directed the “Sacher Festival” devoted to short films.

He has presented six films at the Festival de Cannes, including last year’s highly praised Habemus Papam (We Have a Pope).

Gilles Jacob received the new president’s acceptance with the words: “When we decided to put Ecce Bombo–a super 8 film!–into Competition when I first arrived in 1978, it was because I had a premonition that Nanni Moretti would soon become NANNI MORETTI. This is what happened and I am so gratified to have had this long and affectionate collaboration.”

Thierry Frémaux, for his part, said: “The Festival wanted to celebrate its 65th season with a European jury President. High-spirited and marked by his modernity and intelligence, Nanni Moretti’s films are the incarnation of all the best in cinema over the past thirty years. His work is always evolving and continues to carry the promise of film that engages with the world and with our times.”

65th Cannes Film Festival to host the Jury for the Cinéfondation and Short Films

March 29, 2012

On 23rd May, the Festival de Cannes will host the jury for the Cinéfondation and short films, presided over this year by Jean-Pierre DARDENNE, a Belgian director, scriptwriter as well as producer, who received the honours of the Grand Prix together with his brother Luc for The Kid with a Bike in 2011, after winning two Palmes d’Or, first in 1999 for Rosetta and then in 2005 for The Child, and the award for best screenplay in 2008 for Lorna’s Silence.

The jury, composed of five well-known personalities from the world of cinema and literature, brings together Arsinée KHANJIAN (Canadian actress), Karim AÏNOUZ (Brazilian director and scriptwriter), Emmanuel CARRÈRE (French writer, scriptwriter and director) and YU Lik-wai (Chinese director of photography and filmmaker).

The Jury will select three films presented in the Sélection Cinéfondation, composed of works by cinema-schools, to which they will award prizes of €15,000, €11,250 and €7,500 respectively. These awards will be presented on Friday 25th May in Cannes, at a ceremony in the Salle Buñuel, followed by a screening of the winning films.

The jury will also award the Palme d’Or for Short Films, to be presented at the Festival’s Closing Ceremony on Sunday 27 May.

The short-film competition, composed of previously unscreened works, has in the past discovered artists who have risen to fame: Jane CAMPION and Nuri Bilge CEYLAN, Xavier GIANNOLI, Lynne RAMSAY and Catalin MITULESCU all received their first recognition with a short film in competition in Cannes.

For its part, the Sélection de la Cinéfondation, created in 1998, has screened the student films of many directors whose talent was subsequently confirmed with a feature film, including Vimukthi JAYASUNDARA (Caméra d’Or 2005),  Corneliu PORUMBOIU (Caméra d’Or 2006), Kornél MUNDRUCZÓ (In Competition 2008 & 2010) and Jessica HAUSNER (Un Certain Regard 2001 & 2004).

March 23, 2012

With only three days to go, the BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival starts on Monday 26 March, with the competition organisers busy getting ready for a week of exciting racing and legendary parties. The Sailing Festival is celebrating her 10th anniversary this year and a record entry of yachts from all over the world will be taking part in the event. The British Virgin Islands are well known for the pristine blue waters and heavenly weather, as well as the stunning archipelago of islands, offering one of the most picturesque settings anywhere in the Caribbean.

The BVI Spring Regatta & Sailing Festival provides a myriad of fantastic sailing; breathtaking coastal racing, renowned buoy and round the islands racing. Undoubtedly the fastest yacht competing will be Paradox, skippered by Frenchman, Olivier Vigoureux. The 63′ multihull is capable of ballistic speed, hitting a mind boggling 38 knots during this year’s RORC Caribbean 600. Probably the fastest monohull will be American Bill Alcott’s STP65, Equation.

The Farr designed speed machine is a past winner of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race and Alcott has a highly accomplished team on board visiting from Miami. Bill Alcott won the first BVI Sailing Festival and he has been coming back ever since.

A huge variety of yachts will be competing including the legendary Whitbread Maxi, Rothmans. Bill Erixon and his Swedish team is celebrating a world sailing tour and chose the BVI Spring Regatta for their Caribbean adventure. From Los Angeles, California, a Wild West duel is likely between two one design Farr400s. Mick Shlens’ charter yacht Blade should be evenly matched with Dougie Baker’s Magnitude. From Trinidad, Peter Peake will be campaigning his new charge, Peake Yacht Services. The Reichel Pugh 37 is a real pocket rocket and a former winner of the Cape Town to Rio Race. British entry, sailing yacht Diamonds are Forever skippered by Annie O’Sullivan, should prove to be one of the more colourful entries. The all-girl sailing school has a reputation for consistent form at regattas, by partying as hard as they sail on the water!

The Sailing Festival kicks off the week long festivities and starts with an awe-inspiring passage races from Nanny Cay to the Bitter End Yacht Club in beautiful Virgin Gorda. With small bays and hidden coves, the British Virgin Islands are a wondrous sight and winding through the pristine chain of islands is every sailors dream. Beyond doubt the BVIs are a tropical paradise and there is ample opportunity to explore the delights of Virgin Gorda on Lay Day. The return passage race down the channel, to Nanny Cay Marina will complete the Sailing Festival, bringing the fleet back to Tortola in time to join the party for the BVI Spring Regatta.

Nanny Cay Marina will already be buzzing with excitement; Wednesday and Thursday 28-29 March, Nanny Cay will play host to the GILL BVI International Match Racing Championships. Two days of exciting duels between IC24′s on tight windward leeward courses. Eight international teams will battle it out in an ISAF sanctioned Grade 3 match racing event. With expert race commentary, spectators can follow the drama as it unfolds from the shore of Nanny Cay.

The BVI Spring Regatta attracts the largest fleet at the event and runs from March 30 – April 1. With three days of world-class racing action and famous beach parties at Nanny Cay Marina, the regatta is not to be missed. The action off the water includes the annual bikini show on Saturday and stilt walking Moko Jumbies on Sunday night, so there’s plenty to entertain racers and spectators alike. Every evening, video footage from the day’s event will be broadcast in the Race Village and there will be daily results and race reports with awesome pictures of the sailing action and evening festivities.

60th Giraglia Rolex Cup 2012: St. Tropez, France to San Remo, Italy

March 22, 2012

The Giraglia Rolex Cup is one of the most popular yachting events in the Mediterranean and has been a tradition for European sailors close to 60 years. The event is a pageant of sailing and runs over a full week each year in mid-June.

2012 marks the 60th edition of the Giraglia Rolex Cup, an event that came to life in 1953 in a show of camaraderie between Italian and French sailors wishing to prove that the rigours of World War II were behind them.

The key dates this year are Friday, 8 June to Friday, 15 June. Inshore racing on the Bay of Saint-Tropez takes place from Sunday, 10 to Tuesday, 12 June, and, the offshore race starts on Wednesday, 13 June. The period in Saint-Tropez has a quintessential French Mediterranean feel, with the three days of inshore racing allowing competitors to enjoy the culinary highlights of an engaging port, before embarking on the more serious challenge of a 241-nautical mile race to San Remo, via the Giraglia, a rocky outcrop off the northern tip of Corsica.

Regularly attracting in excess of 200 yachts for the week of competition, the event is a kaleidoscope of nationalities. The French and Italians make up the bulk of entries, but frequently yachts from the USA, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Nordic countries, Eastern Europe, Russia, and, even Asia and the Southern Hemisphere add richness to the occasion.

There are various notable moments for the participants. Certainly, the most memorable is the customary crew party featuring live music, exceptional food and drink, and, a spectacular firework display. Hosted by Rolex, it is set amid the grounds of La Citadelle, the 17th century fort that dominates the skyline on the landward side of Saint-Tropez. This year, the Giraglia Rolex Cup Crew Party will be held on Monday, 11 June.

Thereafter, for those on the offshore race, the rounding of the Giraglia marks the turning for the home. The rock itself is like many others, topped with a lighthouse to help navigators with their bearings. It lies less than one nautical mile off the coast of Corsica, rises 66-metres at its highest point and measures 600-metres in length. Yet, it has achieved mythic proportion in the minds of racing sailors, who view it in similar terms as the Fastnet Rock: somewhere small and uninhabitable, but crucial in the quest to complete the challenge of the race.

The inshore series prize giving will take place on Tuesday, 12 June in Saint-Tropez, whilst the final prize giving will be held on Friday, 15 June in San Remo. The event is organised by the Yacht Club Italiano one of the oldest yacht clubs in the Mediterranean, with the assistance of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez (with both of which clubs Rolex enjoys an exclusive partnership), and, in conjunction with the Yacht Club de France. Rolex has sponsored the event since 1997.

Ettore Mattiello of Nautor’s Swan, added; “The 2012 ClubSwan Caribbean Rendezvous was another successful event for Nautor’s Swan with a complete committment to enjoyment by both participants and organisers.  A full mix of fun racing and socialising with old and new Swan family friends in the warmth of the Caribbean sun and sea made 2012 a great Caribbean Rendezvous year.”

Discover magical Belize while on your next charter vacation

March 22, 2012

Beautiful tranquil mornings with a fresh cup of coffee on deck of your luxury charter yacht, with cool trade winds gently whispering though the palm trees. Watching warm sun sparkling off the blue Caribbean sea and see surf lazily washing up on the white sand. Or perhaps laying on a beach and seeing a rider on a horseback galloping by? If in a good mood, you may go for a short run on the beach, or on a kayak journey to a beautiful cay or just a quick swim before starting the day. This is Belize

La Placencia - Belize

La Placencia - Belize

Besides watching the sun rise and enjoying a low-key, laid-back lifestyle, what else can you do while in Belize?

Because this little country, located just south of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula ranges from the Maya Mountains in the west to the Caribbean on the east.

Or as they say at The Placencia – Experience Belize from the Rainforest to the Reef.

Belize’s greatest resource is nature.  It is a world class destination for the adventurer and naturalist.  You can visit one of the national parks.  In fact, over 46 percent of Belize is dedicated to National Parks and Marine Reserves, including United Nations World Heritage sites.

With over 240 miles of Caribbean coastline there is no end of possibilities for the water sports enthusiast.

Caribbean - Belize - La Placencia

Caribbean - Belize - La Placencia

Belize has the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere.  The diving and snorkelling are consistently rated among the very best in the world.

For the sportsman, the many islands and atolls around the reef also give this area some of the best sailing, yachting and fishing in the Caribbean.  The waters here teem with barracuda, bonito, bonefish, grouper, jacks, permit, pompano, sharks, snapper, snook, tarpon, triggerfish, tuna, and billfish such as marlin and sailfish.

The saltwater fly-fishing in Belize is second to none world-wide.

Of course, as in many seaside resorts, the larger hotels and local companies offer windsurfing, jet-skiing, and parasailing.

Not into watersports? Not a problem: the interior of Belize has become a top eco-tourism destination.

There are vast areas of untouched rainforest and savannahs which are home to over 500 species of birds, 800 kinds of butterflies, and 300 types of orchids.  There are jungle hikes, bird-watching, canoeing, camping, mountain biking, and horseback riding.  You can even visit the world’s onlyjaguar preserve.

Belize - Rendezvous - Placencia Resort

Belize - Rendezvous Islands - La Placencia Resort

More of an adrenaline junkie? Try soaring through the jungle canopy on a zip line up to 80 feet above the ground and get a bird’s eye view of the rainforest below.

After that you may need to cool off a bit by spelunking in one of the many limestone caves or even cave tubing.  If you’re unfamiliar with cave tubing, it’s where you use an inner tube to gently float along on the cool water of a river as it meanders through caves and past underground waterfalls and glittering rock formations.

Archeology more your thing? Belize has more than 900 Mayan ruins scattered throughout the country.  The Mayan pyramids and temples are as spectacular as those in Egypt.

If you’d prefer less strenuous, more urban setting, the cities and larger town of Belize attract a growing number of Americans and other expats who enjoy beautiful neighbourhoods, historic colonial manors, and cultural activities.

Belize City offers visitors a window into the country’s past.  Tributes to British occupation include St. John’s Anglican Cathedral, built by slaves in 1812, and Government House, which is now home to a museum that chronicles the country’s history as part of the British Empire.

Then there are the many elegant restaurants and vibrant nightlife that rivals anything you’d fine in the US or Europe.

How about a round of golf? The Placencia is building the first PGA-quality golf course in Belize called The Panther. Take advantage of Belize’s tropical climate and play all year round.

But one of the best things to do is… nothing.  Just simply relaxing in a lounge chair or hammock on the beach or aboard your luxury superyacht, watching pelicans glide along just inches above the waves, or perhaps watching for manatee in the bay.

Belize is a small and peaceful nation of great natural beauty, a year-around tropical climate, where you can find nearly every activity imaginable.

It’s truly a place where luxury charter vacationers with their families can create a lifetime of memories!
