Advanced Composites Group Ltd. achieves recertification of its VTM®260 Series prepregs from Lloyd’s Resister of Shipping

June 03, 2010

Advanced Composites Group Ltd. (ACG), part of Umeco Composites Structural Materials (UCSM), a Division of Umeco plc, recently achieved recertification of its VTM®260 Series prepregs from Lloyd’s Resister of Shipping.

ACG’s VTM260 Series, the first and only prepreg system to have received Lloyd’s Resister approval, has been widely accepted in the marine industry and is now the product of choice at the highest levels in yacht racing. VTM260 Series offers an array of low pressure, low temperature (from 65°C) processing options and the approval has been extended to include a new variant, VTM267, which has been optimised for resin film infusion, a process favoured for heavier fabric reinforcements typically used in series production.

Combined with a complementary range of surfacing and adhesive films, mouldable cores, 30-day workshop out life and polyester gel coat bonding capability, ACG’s VTM260 Series is proving to be an exceptionally versatile marine prepreg system.

First launched in 2001, VTM260 Series prepregs found immediate success in the America’s Cup and ACG can now count many more successful builds and cup victories. These prepregs have also come to the forefront in the gruelling Volvo Ocean Race, scoring two victories to date.

ACG’s VTM260 Series prepregs have also gained favour in the equally glamorous world of powerboat construction. Here, the aesthetic qualities of carbon fibre are often as desirable as its lightweight structural possibilities and, from patrol boats to racing dinghies, VTM260 Series prepregs are leading the way in performance marine composite construction.

The performance benefits that composite materials offer have long been recognised in the general marine market, where they have displaced traditional materials such as wood and aluminium. As owner expectations rise and the environmental and health and safety pressures build-up against general wet lay-up processing, the marine industry must adopt more advanced construction methods and materials. Low temperature prepregs, such as VTM267, which can be offered in rapid layup formats, are ideal for the construction of large format and series boats, where they offer a simplified and ‘low risk’ route to reduced cost and reproducible high performance.
ACG now considers Lloyd’s Approval as key to the even wider acceptance and growth of prepreg technology in the marine industry.

Sunseeker Yachts Bought by UK Private Equity Firm FL Partners for 25 million GBP

June 02, 2010

UK boatbuilder Sunseeker International has benn purchased by a group of British and Irish investors led by FL Partners, a Dublin-based private equity firm. FL Partners has acquired a majority stake in luxury yacht manufacturer Sunseeker for GBP25 million.

46m Sunseeker Superyacht

The Dublin-based private-equity firm FL Partners said it has also refinanced Sunseeker’s current debt with a long-term package from Macquarie Bank and Haymarket Financial.

Dorset-based Sunseeker Yachts has already invested more than GBP40 million into expanding its manufacturing facilities and product range to deliver yachts of up to 40 meters, and it has plans to extend to 50-meter yachts.

“Whilst we continue to operate in a recovering market place, Sunseeker is one of the few luxury yacht manufacturers which has maintained consistent sales revenue in recent years, itself a reflection of the global standing of the business, its products and the strength of its brand,” says McIntyre. “Our products are in strong demand throughout the world, with few build slots available in FY11 while FY12 is filling up fast. ” said Stewart McIntyre, who has been appointed managing director of Sunseeker, where he is currently chief operating officer.

“The additional capital will ensure that Sunseeker uniquely among its peers has a strong platform for further growth,” he said.

FL Partners, which owns the horse-racing paper Racing Post, is being joined by other Irish and U.K. investors in its Sunseeker Yacht investment deal. The company has also refinanced Sunseeker’s current debt with a long-term package provided by Macquarie Bank, which has also co-invested, and Haymarket Financial. Earlier this year, Sunseeker reported a pre-tax loss of £9.1m for the year ended July 31, 2009 compared to a pre-tax profit of £17.8 in the same period in 2008.

Robert Braithwaite, Sunseeker’s co-founder, remains the largest single shareholder outside FL Partners, and will serve as president and non-executive chairman of Sunseeker International (Holdings) Limited.

Joining the board with Peter Crowley and Neill Hughes of FL Partners will be Andy Macfie of Souter Investments LLP; Souter Investments is transport magnate Brian Souter’s personal investment vehicle.

“I am delighted to welcome Neill and Peter to the Sunseeker board as my partners,” says Braithwaite. “The combination of significant new equity capital together with our existing market-leading positions is a compelling one; Sunseeker will continue to capture the imagination of its customers in all segments of the market and will have a very exciting future.”

“The new investors — working together with the existing management team at Sunseeker — are dedicated to continued success through innovation, and the additional capital will ensure that Sunseeker uniquely amongst its peers has a strong platform for further growth,” he adds.

Sunseeker recently invested over £40m expanding its manufacturing facilities and product range in Poole, Dorset to deliver yachts of up to 40m (131ft) in length, with plans and capacity to expand to 50m (164ft) yachts. The company exports globally and employs around 2,300 people.

Superyachts launched in May 2010

June 01, 2010

There have been a number of superyachts launched during May 2010. Here are the biggest and best yachts CharterWorld have featured throughout the month.

The 60 metre Motor Yacht MARY JEAN II launched by ISA Yachts

Perfectly as scheduled, on a rainy morning in mid-May ISA launched the elegant motor yacht Mary-Jean II.

This motor yacht Mary Jean II, designed and built by ISA, 60 metre long with a beam of 12 metres, has been launched at the presence of the owners, Yachting Partners International, who have project managed the construction on the owner’s behalf, the interior designer, Mark Berryman and some of Ancona’s main authorities in addition to ISA’s top management, employees, workers, families and friends.

2010 ISA megayacht Mary Jean II

The 60 metre motor yacht Mary Jean II painted in Aristo hull and Oyster white is simply stunning, a masterpiece of elegance and style, both on the exterior and on the interior design. This beautiful displacement motor yacht utilizes the latest technology, design and Italian craftsmanship. She boasts very elegant lines with an impressive stern. Like any ISA project, the new 60 – metre motor yacht Mary Jean II stands out for its perfect harmony between stretched lines and extremely spacious and comfortable internal areas.

The interior of the superyacht Mary-Jean II, designed by Mark Berryman, has a clean cut contemporary appearance with teak flooring and bulkhead panels acting as a backdrop. Other tactile materials such as the split bamboo panelling and rustic limestone mosaics invite guests to touch and explore different areas onboard the boat. MB finds it important to get the guests/users of an interior space, thinking about their surroundings.

Although the interior has modern, contemporary overtones, there is a feeling of classical elements in certain areas onboard of Mary Jean II, as the boat will be ideally suited to charter market, as she boasts six guest cabins with a relaxed comfortable interior.

The teak backdrop throughout the Mary-Jean II yacht has been punctuated with the introduction of a contrasting wengé wood. Most fabrics are quite neutral in appearance and then accented by more vibrant colours introduced by the Owner’s artwork and complimentary coloured scatter cushions. MB always feels that using and approach like this will help the interior to appeal to a wide variety of tastes (essential for the charter market). It may not be to everyone’s liking, but it does not offend.

With steel hull and aluminium superstructure, the new ISA 600 motoryacht Mary Jean II is built up on 5 decks. Thanks to 2 Caterpillar 3512 C DITA-SCAC diesel engines , this gem of a mega yacht has a max speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots.

The yacht will be delivered to her Owners in early July and will be exhibited at the imminent edition of the Monaco Yacht Show.

For more information about Mary-Jean II please, contact us at CharterWorld, other wise follow our News section as we will keep you updated about her progress.

First Ferretti CUSTOM LINE 124 Superyacht Launched in Ancona Italy

On a sunny, late spring morning Italian yard Custom Line, a member of the Ferretti Yachts Group, launched the first yacht in their 124’ Custom Line yacht model using the travel-lift system at the Ferretti Group facility in Ancona.

The 37.8m Custom Line 124 superyacht is the new flagship of the Custom Line planning luxury motor yacht fleet. According to the yard the moment that a bottle was broken over the bow keel of the hull, was particularly thrilling, as it symbolised the realisation of the engineering and design work, artisan production and painstaking care the shipyard took over every single detail of this model.

“We are very proud of our ‘new arrival’ and particularly excited about today, which marks the beginning of renewed, further growth for Custom Line”, commented Marco Segato, Custom Line Brand Manager. “A further two units of the 124’ have already been sold, and are currently being built at the Ancona facility, confirming the market’s positive response to this new model, which we will be presenting, as a world première, at the upcoming Festival de la Plaisance in Cannes

The Ferretti Custom Line 124’ motor yacht was designed by architect Gianni Zuccon from Studio Zuccon International Project, who dealt with both the internal and external layouts, working in association with the AYT, Advanced Yacht Technology, Ferretti Group’s naval research and design centre. The new launch features a deep blue hull with a white superstructure, with spacious areas inside and out, well-distributed between the main, lower, upper and sun decks of the yacht.

The exterior of the yacht features soaring, light, elegant lines, due to the installation of an extensive glazed surface in order to naturally light the interior. The upper deck is split between the helm station and lounge/dining area, set in a raised position in order to allow total onboard privacy. The model also features large outdoor areas, and the cockpit has a teak table for 10 to 12 guests. Owners can personalise the area by replacing the table with a lounge area, complete with sofas.

Her upper deck features a second open air luncheon area, where a jacuzzi and sundeck can be installed. The bow lounge area, complete with semi-circular sofa, is a true lounge over the sea, to which a number of sun pads have been added for sun lovers. Also for the interior of the superyacht, within the interior of the yacht, Studio Zuccon International Project incorporated spacious areas, including a salon measuring over 50 square metres, the master suite and, on the lower bridge, four large guest cabins.

In all, Ferretti Custom Line 124’ yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests, plus 6 crew members. The yacht can reach a top speed of 27 knots (preliminary data) with the largest MTU engine, 3510hp, and offers the comfort guaranteed by the Mitsubishi Anti Rolling Gyro system, which reduces rolling by over 50%. The extensive range of personalised solutions that the yard is able to offer makes it possible to alter the use of some of the areas, according to the owner’s requests. For example, a fitness area can be installed in place of one of the cabins, or a chrome therapy system in the heads, for a cruise centred on well being.

Here are some Ferretti superyachts available for luxury yacht charters.

34 m Superyacht NILAYA launched by Baltic Yachts

The 34 metre super sailing yacht Nilaya has been launched by Baltic Yachts in Finland. On the third of May Finnish yard Baltic Yachts launched the 34.14m sailing yacht Nilaya from their Jakobstad facility. The result of a collaboration between Baltic Yachts, Nauta Yacht Design and Reichel Pugh Yacht Design, the Baltic 112 sailing yacht Nilaya is a superyacht that can deliver high sailing performance for her size with all the pedigree of a stripped-out racer. According to Baltic: “When high performance is high on the priorities, carbon fibre pre-preg composite construction is the obvious way to go.”

Nauta Yacht Design was responsible for the general arrangement a and yacht design lines of luxury yacht Nilaya whilst her naval architecture is the work of Reichel Pugh Yacht Design – the two design houses already have a strong collaboration, having worked together historically on the design of high performance cruiser racers. Yacht Nilaya was the inaugural collaboration between Baltic Yachts and Nauta Yacht Design.

On the partnership, Baltic’s Managing Director Kenneth Nyfelt and Nauta’s CEO issued the statement, ” It has been a real pleasure working together during the three year build period. Also influential in the build process was Nigel Ingram of Marine Construction Management who worked closely on the project management of Nilaya.”

With a displacement of just 90T, Nilaya incorporates a lifting keel which is capable of reducing her maximum draft to 3.5metres from 5.5metres, allowing her to enjoy shallower moorings and cruising grounds.

In addition to this sailing yacht Nilaya offers internal space equal to that of yachts of a higher LOA; featuring a deck house with all-round view, a large owner’s cabin and four large guest cabins. Crew are housed within three cabins in addition to the Captain’s double cabin and she boasts a spacious galley. Much attention has been paid to detail, resulting in a simple, synthetic yet timeless style across all aspects of the yacht. Following her completion she will be exhibited at the 2010 Monaco Yacht Show in September.

There are a handful of Baltic sailing yachts currently available for charter.

The Baltic Yachts superyachts under construction at the Baltic Yachts yard currently include the 66.8m ketch Panamax due 2011, the 51m Baltic 170 sloop, due 2014, and another Baltic 112, due 2011. Here is a link to the Baltic Yachts launched to date.

Superyacht LIVIA  Launched by Moonen Yachts

Moonen Shipyards in the Netherlands has launched yacht LIVIA, the third yacht in its impressive line of 30-metre steel-hulled displacement cruisers. Superyacht Livia is a new Moonen 97 motor yacht which is distinguished from other 97s by a truly original ‘New England/American Beach House’ interior from Art-Line and much else besides.

Moonen 97 Superyacht LIVIA

Motor yacht Livia was styled by René van der Velden, who has created a sleek low-profile exterior with an elegant flared bow, a sloping stern with twin stairways, a graceful sheer line and bold fashion plates. The round-bilged hull from the boards of Diana Yacht Design ensures exceptional comfort at sea, while the economical shaping combines with tankage for some 28,000 litres of fuel to give Livia an impressive transatlantic range.

Yacht owners and guests enjoy the most peaceful of cruises thanks to a comprehensive sound and vibration attenuation programme. In addition to deploying the finest noise-absorbing insulation, Moonen has eliminated vibration at source by giving the yacht’s highly skewed propeller 50 percent more clearance between the blade tip and hull surface.

Superyacht Livia is also exceptionally comfortable at anchor thanks to the installation of advanced Naiad zero-speed stabilizers. Moonen is known for its impeccable engineering and construction, and this Lloyd’s Registered and MCA approved yacht once again proves why.

One of the highlights of luxury yacht Livia’s aluminium superstructure is the efficient flying bridge, part of a clear policy to maximize the pleasures of alfresco living onboard this yacht. The interior offers spacious accommodations for the owners and six guests. The master stateroom boasts a walk-in closet of unusually generous proportions. There is also a delightful VIP stateroom plus two guest suites, all with their own bathrooms.

The Moonen 97 motor yacht is an evolutionary design based on two prior Moonen yachts: The semi-series Moonen 84 and the custom-built Moonen 96 Clementine. The first two Moonen 97s were Darsea and Sofia II, while a fourth model is set for delivery beginning 2011.

June 01, 2010

Sweden’s Artemis climbed to the lead of the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena today with a victory over Emirates Team New Zealand.

After six races in winds ranging from 15 to 20 knots the scoreboard now shows Artemis first with six points, and Emirates Team New Zealand and SYNERGY Russian Sailing Team equal second with five points. Only eight teams will qualify for the quarter finals.

With just four races remaining in the round robin, America’s BMW Oracle Racing and the French ALEPH Racing Team, with ninth and tenth places respectively, are on the outside, looking in.

James Spithill and Oracle, the winners of the America’s Cup, decisively won races today against Italy’s Mascalzone Latino and Azzurra, but the late improvement in form still left them in ninth place. With all their races complete the Americans are effectively eliminated.

The mistral winds had eased and conditions were perfect for racing this morning under sunny skies. The first race of the day started in 15 knots of northwest wind after a short delay. The breeze continued to build but after Oracle beat Azzurra in winds that gusted over 20 knots, organizers ordered a delay until conditions eased.

Flight Nineteen, Race Two: BMW Oracle Racing def. Mascalzone Latino, 00:26 – James Spithill on Oracle pushed Mascalzone Latino below the committee on the starboard layline and landed two penalties in quick succession on Italy’s Gavin Brady as they circled tightly in 14 knots of wind. Oracle led across the line by nearly two boat lengths and left the Italian boat in their wake as Brady was forced to complete the first of his penalty turns. Mascalzone trailed by 180 metres as they set off in pursuit. The Italians still trailed by 26 seconds at the finish and the umpires waived the penalty turn to minimize wear and tear on the jib.

Flight Twenty, Race One: Mascalzone Latino def. ALEPH Sailing Team, 00:01 – Gavin Brady steering Mascalzone Latino snatched victory by one second from France’s ALEPH in the closing metres of an intense chase by the Italian boat. Bertrand Pacé dominated a split tack start and led by 18 metres as he started ten seconds after the gun. Brady kept it close through four legs. There was seldom more than one boat length between them. The Italians closed on ALEPH when the French boat botched the last gybe for the mark and conceded their lead.

Flight Fourteen, Race Two: Luna Rossa def ALEPH Sailing Team, 01:45 – Trailing at the first leeward mark, ALEPH sailed through the gate and below the committee boat as the French crew struggled to hoist the the jib and get the gennaker down. Bertrand Pacé had fought for the right at the start but a pin end bias conferred a 30 metre lead to Ed Baird and Luna Rossa.

Flight Thirteen, Race Two: BMW Oracle Racing def. Azzurra, 00:15 – Azzurra steered by Francesco Bruni gave this vital race away with a slow start, trailing by 114 metres off the line. Oracle’s James Spithill went for a pin end start on a heavily biased line and Bruni appeared to be lining up for a port tack start at the committee on port but ducked and tacked, losing valuable time before he crossed on starboard to follow.

Flight Nineteen, Race One: Azzurra def. TEAMORIGIN , 01:03 – Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie took TEAMORIGIN aross the line first at the favored pin end, bow forward by 18 metres . Francesco Bruni in Azzurra gradually gained and tacked just to leeward of the British boat on the port layline as Ainslie called for water, close to the shoreline. From there Bruni gradually squeezed up on Ainslie for a 14 second lead at the top mark and extended from there.

Flight Three, Race Two: Artemis def. Emirates Team New Zealand, 00:18 – After a lively pre-start Terry Hutchinson and Artemis led back to the line, starting to leeward but bow-forward of ETNZ. They were level-pegging for the first third of the leg until Hutchinson forced Kiwi helmsman Dean Barker away. Coming into the weather mark the Swedish boat lost its gennaker pole overboard but retrieved it intact. Repeated protests from the Kiwi boat were green-flagged and the Swedish crew never looked back.

Two Neptunes for HEESEN YACHTS at the 2010 World Superyacht Awards

June 01, 2010

Heesen Yachts is proud to announce that on May 22nd in London’s Guildhall their yachts Celestial Hope and the yacht Blind Date were each awarded with a Neptune trophy, the highest recognition a yacht builder could hope to receive.

Superyacht Awards 2010 - Heesen Yachts

The 47-metre Heesen, Celestial Hope Yacht wins the ‘Semi-displacement or Planing Motor Yacht of over 40-metre Length’ category.

In the words of the Jury, the overwhelming majority of whose members were superyacht owners,‘This category produced a very fine selection of finalists, most of whom were well established series-production designs, whose detailed design and construction quality had been refined over the course of previous builds. The judges rewarded the combination of extremely high quality of construction, an attractive interior design by Intarya and the interesting interior layout of the Heesen-built 47-metre.”

The 46,7-metre Heesen Blind Date Motor Yacht takes the prize for ‘Displacement Motor Yacht Below 500 Gross Tons’.

The Judges’ Report stated: ‘This class contained seven finalists, five aluminium-built yachts and two constructed from composite that were built by leading yards in three continents. The secret ballot revealed the judges’ preference for the Heesen-built Blind Date that blended high quality construction and excellent engineering with uncluttered deck spaces and an attractive, well laid out ‘modern deco’ interior offering a neutral pallet of colours by Keech Green, an interior design company new to the yachting industry. While the general arrangement of the vessel usually followed traditional lines, the division of space, the circulation plan and other practical features for both crew and guests was also considered to be extremely well thought out. The judges could also see from the very clear Owner’s Statement that his requirements and original design objectives had all been met.’

Louis Vuitton Trophy: Day 9 – New Zealand beats BMW Oracle

May 30, 2010

A hard-fought battle between Emirates Team New Zealand’s Dean Barker and BMW Oracle Racing’s James Spithill at the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena today went the Kiwis’ way when the American team lost a penalty call in an aggressive luffing match approaching the second weather mark.

“It was close, just half a metre between the boats, as close as you’d ever want to be,” said Barker, describing the incident . “You could lean across and shake hands if you wanted to.”

Sailed in the blustery 18 to 20 knot winds of a building mistral, the match was the only one sailed today as the wind continued to increase in intensity.  Racing was canceled for the day as crews prepared for a second race between the Kiwi boat and Sweden’s Artemis.

Race officials later cancelled all racing on Monday when the heavy winds of the mistral are forecast to make conditions impossible for competition. They plan to resume on Tuesday and complete the remaining races of the round robin on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Today, the umpires penalized Oracle when Team New Zealand luffed their opponent, forcing them up head-to-wind, as the boats raced side-by-side towards the weather mark on port tack.

“They made a gain to the left approaching the top mark,” Barker said. “They were in a position where they probably would have led us around if we didn’t make something happen, so we did a couple of luffs.  The first one, we were required to give them room to get clear but they didn’t take the room straight away and make an attempt to keep clear so we luffed a second time and could easily have made contact with them if we hadn’t avoided. The umpires saw it the same way and penalized them.”

The confrontation momentarily cost the New Zealanders the lead and gave the advantage to Oracle, so the umpires added a red flag calling for an immediate penalty turn. The American boat circled before rounding the mark but was judged not to have completed a full turn. The umpires called for a second circle before clearing Oracle.

“It was a good hard race for us.  We back our crew work against any team and we came out on the right side of that one,” Barker said. “It’s hard because the emphasis has got to be on keeping the boats apart. We can’t afford any more damage here with one pair of boats already out of action.”

Louis Vuitton Trophy: Day 8 – One point separates the top five boats

May 30, 2010

Just one point separates the top five boats at the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena after an eventful program of five races sailed in fresh breezes.

Russia’s SYNERGY Racing Team and the Swedish team Artemis share the top of the point’s table, each with five points. Emirates Team New Zealand, Britain’s TEAMORIGIN and the French/German team All4One are all equal third on four points.

With two days’ competition remaining in the round robin, the pressure began to tell in strong winds this afternoon as Sweden’s Artemis broke a gennaker pole and shredded a gennaker, and a jib began to self-destruct on Emirates Team New Zealand. Both top teams lost their respective races.

The Artemis breakdown was self-inflicted. The Swedish boat skippered by Paul Cayard was pushing to overtake the Russian boat when the pole went overboard, triggering a sequence that saw it trip and explode into pieces before dragging the sail under the boat. Artemis retired. On the Team New Zealand boat, racing All4One, the hapless Kiwis could only watch as the head of their jib began to split in 20 knot winds.

The Kiwis had more success off the water, at least temporarily when the Race Committee gave them a reprieve by ordering a resail of their race yesterday against BMW Oracle Racing. In another twist, the Jury tonight will hear an appeal by Oracle against the resail decision.

The dispute hinges on a safety order issued yesterday telling teams to maintain tension on forestays during spinnaker runs. After an umpires’ protest and a jury decision denied Team New Zealand any chance of a win in their match against Oracle, the organizers relented today, withdrew the safety order and ordered the resail.

Flight Seventeen, Race Two: TEAMORIGIN def. Luna Rossa, 00:37 – They started at speed on starboard with Britain’s TEAMORIGIN bow-out in the leeward berth. Ed Baird steering Luna Rossa was forced away early on port as Ben Ainslie on ORIGIN sailed into more pressure and continued to pull ahead.

Flight Six, Race Two: Azzurra def. SYNERGY Russian Sailing Team, 00:15 – Italy’s Francesco Bruni pulled off a breathtakingly close port cross on the first leg to defeat SYNERGY Russian Sailing Team.

On the second beat there were 17 punishing tacks up the 1.2-mile leg but Synergy skipper Karol Jablonski, on the right, could never gain enough ground to get past Bruni.

Flight Twentythree, Race One: Artemis def. Azzurra, 00:15 – Saddled with a penalty in the pre-start Francesco Bruni and his Italian Azzurra team stayed on the attack and took the fight to the Swedish team Artemis around all four legs as the lead changed multiple times. However the Italians were trailing Terry Hutchinson and Artemis by 100 metres at the finish and they were still carrying the penalty.

Flight Eighteen, Race One: SYNERGY Russian Sailing Team def. Artemis, retired – A spinnaker pole overboard at the end of the second run dragged Artemis to oblivion, breaking the pole and shredding the Swedish boat’s spinnaker.

Flight Twenty, Race Two: All4One def. Emirates Team New Zealand, 00:21 – The French/German boat started ahead in the middle of the line on starboard, just ahead of the Kiwis on their weather hip. All4One helmsman Sébastien Col gradually inched ahead and his lead increased as the jib on ETNZ began to self-destruct.
