Second and third places went to Perini Navi sailing yachts Andromeda le dea and P2 respectively.

Overall winners:

1st: Ranger

2nd: Andromeda_le_dea

3rd: P2

In 2005 the yachts sailing in the regatta were split into 2 classes which were a “Cruising Division” and “Racing Division”.  Theses classes were named “Les Gazelles des Mers” for the Racing Division and “Les Grandes Dammes des Mers” for the Cruising Division.

Each Division has trophies presented for best performance overall, and saw J Class Ranger win the Racing class, with Perini Navi Andromeda winning the Cruising class.

2nd: Axia

3rd: Hetairos

Sailing yacht Georgia won the Alloy Cup – which is the Best Performance by an Alloy Yacht.

The winner of the All Star Crew Award was sailing yacht Antara.

At each Bucket Event, every yacht is asked to cast a ballot for the yacht crew among the fleet that demonstrates the most professional service in all tasks, while maintaining the best voie de vivre, camaraderie, teamwork and respect among the crew.  This is the crew that displays the pinnacle of the profession and has the most fun at it – the yacht that everyone wants to work aboard.   Because the award is earned by peer recognition, it has earned serious stature within the marine industry.

The Spirit of the Bucket Trophy was awarded to luxury yacht Gloria.

This award is presented each year by Alice Huisman, to the yacht that best exemplifies the spirit of the Bucket Regattas.  The selection is absolutely subjective, but considers sportsmanship, safe seamanship, best hospitality and overall contribution to the event.

The Perini Navi Cup which is awarded to the Perini-Navi Yacht with the best combined result went to sailing yacht Andromeda_le_dea.

The Vitters Seamanship Trophy was won by sailing yacht Baracuda.

The Vitters Seamanship Trophy is awarded to the yacht that demonstrates the best seamanship and sportsmanship in the interest of promoting safety on the race course.  All participants in the Bucket acknowledge that superyachts have serious limitations operating safely in close quarters and therefore, the RC has always valued safety well above performance.  This award will recognize the yacht that best demonstrates that understanding.  It also goes to prove that nice guys don’t always finish last…

The Skullduggery Cravat was awarded to sailing yacht Axia.

The Skullduggery Cravat is a perfectly tied Admiralty Noose, framed, with instructions in elegant calligraphy on how to tie a proper, 13 turn noose.  This was originally awarded to the owner of SARIYAH in 2002, so his captain, Timothy Laughridge (Bucket Committee) could be hung at the pleasure of the Fleet.

The award was renamed and put forward by the Committee to reinforce the Bucket premise that we are NOT here to promulgate adult behaviour. The Cravat will be awarded to the yacht and crew who display the best bucket humour.  As a guideline, one year the crew of  SARIYAH spent the evening prior to the last race, slaughtering a down feathered mattress, then they packed the feathers in with their spinnaker so when they set their ‘Chute with the Hawk logo the following day, they not only dusted the horizon with feathers, but left a rubber chicken hanging from their spinnaker pole!!!

And last but not least, the Escargot Cup went to the luxury sailing yacht TOTO.

The Largest Sports Charter Yachts in the World: Motor Yachts ZEUS & PURE ONE

March 17, 2010

If you love the luxury and style of a large superyacht but wish to move about between desired locations, with exhilaration and speed, there are currently two options worldwide. One is called motor yacht ZEUS and the other is called PURE ONE.

Both superyacht PURE ONE and ZEUS are available for luxury yacht charters in the western Mediterranean this 2010 summer. So how do they stack up in comparison?

PURE ONE

Motor yacht PURE ONE is from the Leopard range, as built by Arno, a well known builder of large open style super sport yachts. Superyacht PURE ONE boasts beautifully balanced, lithe and aggressive exterior lines. She does not look like an enlarged sports yacht, but rather has original exterior design befitting a yacht of her size and status. Everything is in place including large jacuzzi, aft deck spaces and forward viewing seating. Working well with the exterior symmetry, her contemporary interior is one of sophistication and energy.

ZEUS

Though PURE ONE is huge for a sports yacht, the Mangusta 165 superyacht ZEUS is in fact currently THE largest open style sport motor yacht in the world. Yacht Zeus has a wonderful aft deck and foredeck arrangement, complete with heated Jacuzzis pool which can alternate as a sunbathing pad. In addition, the elegant interior of luxury yacht ZEUS is also well concieved and it features neutral fabrics and dark woodwork and a spacious main salon area.

Speed:

Yacht ZEUS boasts a top speed of around 37 knots, which is indeed very exceptional for a 50 metre yacht. Three 4,556 hp MTU diesel engines provide the exhilarating power for this breath taking speed. She can also ‘cruise’ at 24 knots.

The 46 metre Leopard motor yacht PURE ONE has a slightly higher 26 knots cruising speed, but she achieves a slightly lower 30 knots as her top speed. Yacht PURE ONE also uses power from three MTU diesel engines: two are MTU 16V2000M93 1400 Hp and the center one is a MTU 16V4000M93L rated 4615 Hp.

This extraordinary power is efficiently realised with large water jets, enabling these very large motor yachts to reach such speeds.

Accommodation:

The accommodation layout aboard the yacht PURE ONE means she can offer 10 charter guests overnight sleeping (with12 for day cruising). The layout is 5 cabins, with the owner’s master cabin being situated up on the main deck. She has a further 2 double and 2 twin cabins below decks.

Also in a 5 cabin layout, yacht Zeus holds another 2 yacht charter guests overnight, accommodating a maximum of 12. Her 5 well sized staterooms are positioned below decks, including the owner’s cabin, and two have extra Pullman bunks. She also boasts a private office and a separate cinema room.

Price:

ZEUS is currently priced at around € 250,000.00 per week plus expenses on MYBA terms, whereas PURE ONE comes in at between €180,000 and €195,000 a week plus expenses, depending on dates.

Luxury CNB sailing yacht SPIIP to charter in Egypt and the Red Sea

March 09, 2010

Sailing yacht SPIIP is a CNB 86, designed by the naval architect Philippe Briand. This luxury super yacht measuring 26,21m (86′) exudes performance, luxury and opulence and will be in Egypt (Hurgadha) from January to April 2010.

The archipelago around the Hurghada area has some of the best diving and snorkelling in the world. This unique charter destination is totally isolated with the exception of a few dive boats and fisherman. Amongst the atolls you have the feeling  of being anchored in the middle of the sea and yet you are totally protected. All though the area is renowned for being windy at times, due to the numerous reefs you are able to sail in sheltered waters.
Please see below for a sample itinerary in this amazing untouched destination.

Day 1 – You are welcomed aboard sailing yacht SPIIP at El Gouna. After a welcome drink,  explore local markets at Hurghada and sample the refreshing sugar cane juice – or explore the El Gouna resort area and treat yourself to a health spa or game of golf in the middle of the desert.

Day 2 – Set sail for Shab el Erg about 2 hours away. Shab el Erg is an atoll with great anchoring inside and crystal clear water. There is an idyllic pinnacle which you can snorkel with lots of lion fish and sometimes dolphins.

Day 3 – Set sail to Bluff point (3 hr sail). This spectacular anchorage has a beautiful  beach and a fantastic wall dive or snorkel, abundant with fish, turtles and a resident napoleon fish.

Day 4 – Shab umm Usk (1 hr sail ) is another atoll that you can enter with a variety of snorkels depending on the wind. It is however best known for its group of resident dolphins that often come for a play. For dinner it is possible to select a fresh fish or lobster from the local fisherman.

Day 5 – For those who like water sports, Endeavour Island is your spot  which is a 1 hr  sail away. This very protected anchorage is great for water sports and some beach combing.

Day 6 and 7 – Depending on the weather it is possible to visit the national park of the Giftun Islands ( 3 hrs ) or Shab Ali (2 hrs ) in the straits of Gubal. If the weather is too windy which happens sometimes we can organise a trip to Luxor to see the Karnak temple and the valley of the Kings and Queens. If you wish to dive some of the numerous wreck dives it is no problem to rendezvous with a dive boat. It is also possible to incorporate the week with a PADI diving course, organised with a Swedish diving company called Colona dive situated at the marina of El Gouna.

The sleek and speedy exterior of the beautiful sailing yacht SPIIP is matched by her sumptuous interior which offers a light and airy design with splashes of bright fresh colour.  Charter sailing yacht SPIIP can accommodate 6 guests in 3 cabins with ensuite bathrooms including a huge master cabin located aft, a double and a convertible cabin that can either have a double bed or two twin bed configuration.

In April the yacht will relocate to the Western Mediterranean. Contact the team at CharterWorld to check availability and location details for the luxury sailing yacht SPIIP.

Planetsolar – the World’s Largest Solar Powered Yacht will circumnavigate the globe in 2011.

March 03, 2010

Planetsolar 30m solar powered catamaran

A selection of international scientists, engineers and boat builders from Germany and Switzerland have developed the world’s largest solar powered yacht designed to circumnavigate the world. The PlanetSolar catamaran, conceptualised by Swiss designer Raphael Domjan and built by Knierim Yacht Club in Kiel in northern Germany, was unveiled on February 25, 2010 at the HDW Shipyard in Kiel, Germany.

PlanetSolar is expected to begin testing in late March and will prepare to set sail on its maiden voyage to circumnavigate the globe in April 2011. With a top speed of 15 knots — she is expected to be the fastest solar boat to cross the Atlantic Ocean and the first to cross the Pacific. The planned route around the world will start from Europe. It is expected to reach an average speed of 8 knots and cover approximately 40,000km in around 4 months.

A total of 500 sq metres (about 5,300 square feet) of solar panelling made up with some 38,000 SunPower cells will help to power the yacht.  Each of the new generation cells used has “an efficiency of at least 22 percent”, delivering 103.4kW (138.6HP) making them the highest-efficiency solar cells commercially available. If the day is overcast, batteries below deck store enough energy for several days without direct sunlight. Her design also enables her to easily carve through the water increasing her maximum speeds.

Catamaran PlanetSolar measures 30m by 15m, is estimated to cost around $24 million, weighs in at 60 tonne and features a sleek eco friendly design likely to influence future trends in yachting. The yacht was constructed by the company PlanetSolar, who have declared “we want to show that we can change, that solutions exist and that it isn’t too late. Future generations are looking to us; our choices will mark the future of humanity.”

The company PlanetSolar is committed to sustainable development and is particularly motivated by the necessity to develop alternatives to fossil fuels which are in limited supply and causing measurable negative environmental impact. Perhaps we will see further trends in Superyacht building and design leading to a greener approach. Other notable Eco-friendly designs beginning to surface include such designs as Alastair Callender’s Soliloquy.

The first solar powered boat to cross the Atlantic was the Swiss, 15 meters Solar21 catamaran.  It made the journey between the Canary Islands and Martinique in 29 days at a top speed of 9 knots reaching Miami on March 29, 2007.

Two crew will man the catamaran PlanetSolar during its world tour and the craft will be available for public displays – able to host up to 50 guests for an educational opportunity at each of its planned stops. Stop over ports under consideration (subject to change) include Monaco, Marseille, New York, Acapulco, San Francisco, Cairns and Darwin, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai.
