Seakeeper gyros stabilise charter yacht MARHABA

February 29, 2012

Number of benefits of gyro stabilisation have been appreciated by Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo who chose to charter the Ocea 108 Commuter motor yacht Marhaba, for the past two seasons. Certainly a man that understands the importance of unhindered speed and beauty. Seakeeper gyros provides superior roll reduction in a range of sea conditions, without drag-producing appendages. Their quite operation and low power consumption make them the stabilisation choice over fins, including for underway use. Motor Yacht Marhaba has been recently fitted with two Seakeeper M21000 gyros.

A “Control Moment Gyro,” it employs the physics of gyro-dynamics to deliver powerful righting force that stabilizes a yacht.  The gyro’s flywheel spins at high speed in a near vacuum, inside an aluminum spherical housing.  This virtually eliminates air friction, which allows Seakeeper gyros to weigh much less, and consume very little power.

“The Seakeeper gyros’ performance has been really satisfying.  The feeling onboard Marhaba charter yacht has changed dramatically, during navigation, due to an important reduction in roll.  This allows everyone on board, even the more sensitive people, to fully enjoy the experience of Marhaba,” said Montezemolo.  “We recommend Seakeeper gyros because the effective roll reduction has been very important, more than expected.  And also, all the technical requirements that we have taken into consideration for our choice have been completely satisfied.”

Montezemolo experienced the power of Seakeeper gyros himself during a side-by-side comparison of a fin and gyro-type stabilizer on yachts off the coast of Viareggio, Italy.  “We considered the Seakeeper gyros’ high rotational speed, which created a high value of angular momentum.  Also, they produced limited noise and added limited weight,” said Montezemolo.

Seakeeper gyros also include an active control mechanism which optimizes the gyro’s performance over a wide range of sea states.  A passively controlled gyro must be turned off in the roughest conditions to keep from damaging itself, whereas the Seakeeper Gyro can continue to operate when it is most needed.

The M21000 gyros were retrofitted in the lazarette, one port and one starboard.  Superyacht Marhaba already had a hydraulic fin system in place.  Subsequent sea trials 2 miles off the coast of Genoa, Italy, verified the performance of the Seakeeper gyros, both underway and at zero speed.

Though seas were relatively calm on day one for underway testing, with light winds and short, choppy waves with estimated maximum heights of 0.4m, when compared to the performance of the yacht’s stabilizing fins, Seakeeper proved its capabilities extremely well.

With Marhaba yacht travelling at 10 knots in beam seas, the gyro and fins were engaged separately, and then used together.  The Seakeeper gyros, operating alone underway, reduced the standard deviation of the roll rate from more than 1.2 degrees to 0.8 degrees.  The gyros also reduced the standard deviation of the roll angle from nearly 1.0 degrees to 0.6 degrees, producing results very similar to those achieved by the fins alone.

Zero speed trials performed aboard motor yacht Marhaba further prove the versatility of the Seakeeper gyro’s stabilization capabilities.  On day one, even in such calm conditions, the combination of waves and the yacht’s natural roll at zero speed produced uncomfortable motion.  The Seakeeper gyros achieved an impressive 76% resonant roll reduction.

On day two of the sea trials, a storm blew in, creating breaking waves with maximum heights of approximately 1.25m.  Those onboard even witnessed a waterspout nearby.  Again, with the Seakeeper gyros engaged, a powerful 77% zero speed resonant roll reduction was achieved aboard charter yacht Marhaba.

Company85 Global Challenge 90´motor yacht Accomplish More in partnership with ECOsuperyacht

February 27, 2012

Company85 Global Challenge 90´ motor yacht Accomplish More was designed and constructed by British ocean adventurer Alan Priddy. The Accomplish More superyacht is the fastest and most efficient wave-piercing powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, breaking not just the existing 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes powerboat record, but also the 45 days 13 hours 42 minutes sailing record. The ultimate goal is the fastest ever surface circumnavigation of the world, in partnership with ECOsuperyacht, to completely offset all carbon emissions arising from this record circumnavigation.

Company85 Global Challenge motor yacht Accomplish More

Company85 Global Challenge motor yacht Accomplish More

“All the way along, we’ve been at pains to explain that the Company85 Global Challenge powerboat Accomplish More has been designed to be as fuel efficient as possible,” says Alan Priddy. “The primary motive behind that is to get the greatest range that we can on one fill of fuel, and thus cut down on time spent in port. But we’re also very mindful that we have a range of technologies brought together for the first time in one boat, and that it’s very likely that what we achieve with Accomplish More will influence the way boats are built in the future.”

“While we want to show it’s possible to make boats which are less demanding on the earth’s resources, we’re also very keen to ensure our environmental balance sheet doesn’t go into the red. The boat itself is 80% recycled aluminium, and should she ever be scrapped, we calculate over 90% of her will be recyclable. But ultimately we have to look at the process of carbon offsetting – not just contributing money to schemes such as planting sustainable forests, but actually working out very precisely what our carbon emissions will be, and then deciding on appropriate projects to provide the offset.”

ECOsuperyacht’s Richard Franklin says: “We’re delighted to be working with the Challenge team on this exciting world record attempt. Our current expectation is to offset 1,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, based on their estimated fuel burn of 200,000 litres, plus practice runs, logistics and ground crew movements. We’re working with Alan and the team to keep tabs on all these sources, so that we can get an accurate number at the end of the Challenge. The offsetting will be provided by high quality carbon credits from a range of suitable projects, and of course we’ll provide a complete audit trail, as we do for all our clients. We’ll also be working with Alan to look at ways of reducing fuel burn and emissions, so the final amount needing to be offset is minimised.”

The Innovation Awards, organized by NMMA and judged by BWI, recognize products that best meet the following criteria: innovative distinction from other products currently being manufactured; benefit to the marine industry and/or consumer; practicality; cost-effectiveness; and availability to the consumer within 60 days of award receipt.

“The number of entries this year exceeded our expectations, and all of the products we reviewed paint a bright future for boating industry evolution,” noted Zuzana Prochazka, Innovation Awards’ Judge Chair, Editor of Talk of the Dock, Technical Editor of Latitudes & Attitudes, and President of BWI Board of Directors. “The winners recognized at the boat show today are a testament to the ongoing commitment to boating ingenuity necessary to the future of our industry, and we’re excited to see how these products adapt in the marketplace.”

In addition to Prochazka, rounding out the panel of judges for this year’s Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail Innovation Awards are Ed Sherman, Educational Programming Director at the American Boat & Yacht Council, (ABYC); Jan Mundy, co-founder of DIY Boat Owner and writer; Lenny Rudow, Boat Review Editor for Boats.com and Electronics Editor for BoatUS and Marlin magazines; Alan Jones, Executive Editor for Boating World magazine; Elaine Lembo, Cruising World deputy editor; and Mark Corke, author, owner of the On Board with mark Corke blog and Contributing Writer to Soundings and Lakeland Boating magazines.

Thirteen Innovation Awards and two Honorable Mentions were presented in the following thirteen categories:

Applications and Mobile Software

Beneteau Toucan Dealer App by Jester Communications: This interactive selling tool includes video, brochures, spec sheets and a configuring tool that allows dealers to create a personalized boat and a quote right on the dock. “This app,” said Elaine Lembo, “Represents a step up in the professionalism and expediency with which dealers can do their job and may even result in greater sales overall.”

Runabout and Fishing Craft to 24’

Pro Skiff Series by Mako: The Mako’s innovative AIV hull shape delivers superior stability, good rough water handling and a greater load carrying capacity. “After running this boat, I came to really appreciate what can be done on a 17’ foot boat,” said Alan Jones. “And it’s an affordable package of boat, engine and trailer that lowers the barrier to entry for anyone thinking of getting into boating.”

Cruisers (25′ to 60′ including fishing craft)

SLX 250 yacht tender by Sea Ray: The 250 incorporates Sea Ray’s Quiet Ride Technology, a comprehensive effort to lessen the total noise and vibration level by 20 – 50% depending on a person’s location on the boat. Jan Mundy commented “This makes a huge difference– it’ll be nice to actually hear yourself think after a long day on the water.”

PWC & Jet Boats

Sea Doo RXP-X 260 by Bombardier: Sea Doo’s ErgoLock seat, angled footwells, and T3 hull combine to create a PWC with incredible turning ability and maximum comfort designed to build confidence in its rider. “It made me an instant expert,” said Alan Jones who shared his YouTube racing video with us. “I was the cock of the walk on this supercharged muscle machine.”

Sailboats

Sailing yacht Oceanis Series 48 by Beneteau: The electric transom on the Oceanis Series opens up the cockpit and adds three feet to the boat, but only when you want it. “This is a great way to expand the outdoor living area on a boat,” said Lenny Rudow. “It almost makes me want to go somewhere on a sailboat.” For any of you who know Lenny, you’ll appreciate what a powerful endorsement that is.

Docking and Fendering Equipment

V-Lift by Sunstream Boat Lifts: The V-lift is twice as fast as existing air lifts, has no air hoses or power pack to contend with, and is perfectly portable because it can be towed with a boat from slip to slip. “This is a great modular unit,” said Ed Sherman. “It makes perfect sense for boats up to 11,000 pounds, and you can even put an outboard right on it and drive it to where you need it.”

Honorable Mention: Eel Shore Power Cord by Marinco

Consumer Electronics and Software

InReach by Delorme: This global satellite communicator affordably delivers two-way texting, delivery confirmation, and SOS messaging anywhere in the world. Lenny commented, “With global two-way texting, it might even satisfy the communication needs of my twin 12-year olds.”

Honorable Mention: MS-AV700 Audio and Video Entertainment Package by Fusion Electronics

Consumer Installed Non-Electronic Hardware

SCUBA Donning Assistance System by Dive Mate: This simple and affordable add-on can help anyone don their dive gear using an insert that goes into an existing rod holder. “It runs on the KISS principle,” said Jan Mundy. “It keeps things simple as it turns your fishing boat into your user-friendly dive boat.”

Water Sports & Equipment

Battle Saddle by Release Marine: The Battle Saddle functions like a classic fighting chair in the cockpit of a sport fishing boat but only takes up one third of the space which is perfect as it was designed for boats 30-40 feet. “As cockpits continue to do double duty for entertaining and fishing, the space gets to be more of a premium,” said Lenny Rudow. “This can be used by everyone, from kids to really big guys and that opens up the fishing action to everyone aboard.”

Outboard Engines

DF300 AP by Suzuki Marine: Suzuki’s Selective Rotation feature combines standard and counter-rotation operation into the same outboard by switching an electronic circuit which eliminates the need to buy a dedicated counter-rotation outboard. “This is a brilliant ground-breaking design,” said Ed Sherman. “This will save dealers money in inventory, and consumers selling their used twins will now be able to sell them one at a time and make them into whatever the seller needs.”

Consumer Safety Equipment

AIS Watchmate Vision by Vesper: The WatchMate is a dedicated AIS display that combines a touchscreen, WiFi and NMEA 2000 in a compact unit and adds iPad and iPhone apps for added functionality. “Eliminating the clutter enhances this products usability,” said Elaine Lembo. “You can instantly see targets around you and who’s headed your way on a clear color screen.”

Pontoon & Deckboats

Ambassador by Avalon: The Ambassador is feature-packed and has the industry’s only electric reclining rear loungers and pop-up wine rack. Alan Jones may have created a new category when describing the boat’s many yacht-like features. “This isn’t a tri-toon so much as it is a yacht-toon. I can’t wait to test one out for over-night weekends.”

Environmental Award

Propane Outboard by Lehr: The Lehr outboard is powered by propane from many sources including the small green BBQ bottles. With zero evaporative emissions and no winterization needed, Lehr makes sure some boaters never need to carry gasoline aboard. Mark Corke noted “I’d love to put this on the tender to my diesel powered sailboat and never think about gas again.”

The 2012 Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show & Strictly Sail runs February 16-20.

High Performance Yacht Design Conference, 12 – 14 March 2012, Auckland

February 16, 2012

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (NZ), New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and the University of Auckland will host the 4th High Performance Yacht Design Conference from 12 – 14 March 2012 at the Maritime Museum, Viaduct Harbour, Auckland, New Zealand.  The conference with coincide with the Volvo Ocean race – Auckland stopover.

High Performance Yacht Design Conference, 12 - 14 March 2012, Auckland

High Performance Yacht Design Conference, 12 - 14 March 2012, Auckland

With the Volvo Ocean Race yachts in town and AC45 catamarans training on the harbour this summer, Auckland, New Zealand is also playing host to an international group of scientists, designers and academics focused on what makes them go fast now – and how to make them go even faster in the future. The science of achieving speed under sail is at the heart of the fourth High Performance Yacht Design Conference from March 12 to 14 2012.

As the state of the art leaps forward with record-shattering circumnavigations and America’s Cup yachts capable of 35 knots under giant wings, the conference will bring together more than 100 international delegates and research experts across a wide range of disciplines from materials and structures to aero- and hydrodynamics.

Organised under the auspices of The Royal Institute of Naval Architects (NZ) and the University of Auckland, the conference will take place at the Maritime Museum in the Viaduct Harbour – where the Volvo Ocean Race fleet will be berthed.

For the first time, the conference will include a public session (on Monday, March 12), which will focus on the Volvo Ocean Race and will include a panel of skippers, competitors and designers talking about the current race and the performance aspects of these highly powerful canting-keel yachts.

“In some respects, we are approaching a point where performance may exceed human endurance on these long offshore races,” says conference chairman, David Le Pelley from the University of Auckland Yacht Research Unit. “These yachts are quite extreme and the demands on crew are enormous. In the pressure of competition, skippers have to make tough decisions about how close to the edge they can go before they start risking not just the boats, but the safety of their crew.”

Among the panel will be Chris Nicholson, skipper of the New Zealand CAMPER entry, Mike Sanderson, a previous winner of the race and current skipper of the Chinese Sanya team, Simon Fisher from the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, Tony Mutter from the American PUMA crew along with technical experts Ian Campbell of the Wolfson Unit at Southampton University and Giovanni Belgrano, a world expert on composite structures.

Campbell and Belgrano will also deliver keynote addresses in their respective fields, along with Dr Len Imas, an international authority in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) from the Stevens Institute of Technology in the USA.

With Belgrano and Imas both working on the Emirates Team New Zealand America’s Cup programme, much of their current attention will be on the design and development of the extraordinary new class of 72ft catamarans propelled by highly efficient articulating wings, which will debut in San Francisco next year.

The advent of wings is an exciting new field for high performance sailing, but they do not mean the demise of soft sails. Intensive research and development continues to take place in this area.

“Despite the huge resources that have gone into sail design programmes over the course of high profile America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race campaigns, there is still much to learn,” says Le Pelley, who will present a paper on aerodynamic force deduction techniques.

To offset the costs and practical difficulties involved in full-scale on-the-water testing, big advances have been made in computer modeling and CFD programs. While these have improved dramatically, the ultimate goal of perfectly dependable computer simulation and performance prediction design tools remains a long way off. “There will always be a place for experimental and numerical testing,” says Le Pelley.

And, he acknowledges, amidst all the science, there is also even still a place for some art and old-fashioned eyeballing in yacht design.

This is the fourth High Performance Yacht Design Conference to take place in New Zealand. The first was in 2002 during the lead-up to the America’s Cup.

The conferences have achieved a high reputation as a forum for some of the leading experts in various fields of yacht design and form an important part of New Zealand’s standing as a world leader in the marine industry.
