47m motor yacht Lady Petra (ex hull YN 15747) launched by Heesen Yachts

Heesen Yachts is happy to announce that the 47m motor yacht Lady Petra, previously known as hull YN 15747, was successfully launched at their facility in Oss, on Saturday, April 28th, 2012. The Lady Petra superyacht is the eighth luxury vessel, belonging to the Heesen’s award-winning 47-metre class.

The project, which began when the contract was signed back in 2010, is very special for the Company as the client is Frans Heesen himself, the former owner and founder of the shipyard.

Mr. and Mrs. Heesen appointed Bannenberg and Rowell to design the interiors of their new yacht because they particularly appreciate the richness and variety of materials used by this company in their interior designs, and the way that they are brought together to create an eclectic yet pleasingly integrated atmosphere.

The challenge of working with a shipyard owner turned yacht owner was welcomed by Dickie Bannenberg of Bannenberg and Rowell Design: “Designing a yacht for someone who has built his shipyard into an industry-leading force is an honour and, at the same time, a great responsibility. But we have had a wonderful couple of years working closely with the Heesen family and the Heesen team (both interchangeable !) and are very proud to set Frans, Petra and their family on their way in their new yacht.”

The guiding inspirations of the décor come from diverse sources including 20th Century industrial Dutch design, optical geometric studies, and shapes inspired by industrial components such as formers and frames. These elements come together to create a dynamic interior concept that is also comfortable, approachable and inviting.

Frank Laupman of Omega architects has worked extensively on the Heesen fleet. “We are proud to have the opportunity to be part of the Heesen world by creating the lines for their yachts for some twenty years. Today we are even more proud because this new 47 metre has been conceived for Frans Heesen the founder of this beautiful shipyard.”

The general arrangement of the luxury yacht Lady Petra created by Omega Architects, has positioned the Owner’s suite on the upper deck away from the guest cabins on the Lower deck offering the Owners more privacy and calm during periods when their numerous grandchildren are on board. This also means that the younger members of the family benefit from a media and games room in the area that is normally reserved for the master cabin forward on the main deck.

On the occasion of the launching of his new superyacht Lady Petra, Frans Heesen took the opportunity to announce his retirement from official functions in the company that bears his name. “It is time for me to enjoy life with my family and friends” – says the successful Dutch businessman. “I am going to be the Brand Ambassador of this wonderful company that I founded some 35 years ago. I will always be there to support the brand and to promote it until the end of my days!”

47m motor yacht Aquamarina, built by the prestigious Italian shipyard ISA in 2006, has undergone an intensive six month refit at the Brisbane-based Rivergate Marina & Shipyard. The refit of the Aquamarina superyacht was completed within budget as well as ahead of schedule, meeting all the customers´ expectations.

The primary focus of the refit was to complete exterior refinish which was undertaken by Rivergate´s contractor, Superyacht Solutions. Superyacht Solutions has a longstanding international reputation for large scale applications of special effect coatings on vessels.

This was no ordinary paint job, it incorporated unique colours, effects and specialised equipment and techniques. It was also the largest white boat special effect refinish to be completed in Australia!

The coatings used on the luxury yacht Aquamarina were formulated in Europe by DuPont and air freighted to Australia specially for this project. The hull was finished in a glacier metallic blue and the superstructure in a stunning pearlescent. The formulations, applications, colour and effect of the eight coats of metallic applied to the hull and the ten coats of pearlescent applied to the superstructure had to meet exacting criteria.

Prior to the final coatings being applied to the ISA superyacht Aquamarina, test panels underwent digital testing with Dual Wavescan and Cloud Runner technologies. This was to ensure all aspects of the design and application criteria would deliver the result required by the clients.

It is interesting that these technologies are also used by prestige automobile manufacturers (e.g. Bentley, BMW and Jaguar) to set criteria, test values and provide outcomes for their prestige vehicle coatings.

The collaboration of Rivergate and Superyacht Solutions on the 47m motor yacht Aquamarina has focused attention on the high standards this team delivers, even when the project is technically demanding, time constrained and rigorous.

Rivergate´s Manager, Andrew Cannon, says that DuPont Performance Coatings, have expressed their considerable satisfaction with the results, describing the finish as “fantastic”. Appointed principal contractor by the Aquamarina yacht´s Monaco-based managers, Yachting Partners International (YPI) has also been effusive in its praise of the professionalism of Rivergate and its team, the results achieved and the redelivery ahead of schedule.

Aquamarina´s new exterior paint work can only be described as ´simply the best´.

Antigua Sailing Week 2012: Day 3 – Another day of big breeze

Sailors competing in the Antigua Sailing Week 2012 experienced another day of big breeze on day three of this popular Caribbean race. The Ocean mark laid for today’s big yachts was a new addition. It needed more than 300 feet of line to lay the mark four miles off the leeward coast of Antigua.

The sizeable yachts in CSA 1 were an awesome sight today, smashing through the start line to windward through the Caribbean surf and after coming off the wind at the Ocean mark, the yachts speared off downwind, bow up, accelerating off big waves to surf at speeds of 20 knots plus.

In CSA 1A, Geoff Hill’s Santa Cruz 72 sailing yacht Antipodes scored its first win of the regatta. Geoff Hill has been to Antigua Sailing Week many times before but, surprisingly, this is the first visit to the Caribbean’s longest running regatta for the true Australian sailing legend. At 85 years of age, Syd Fischer is probably the oldest competitor at Antigua Sailing Week. Syd shares a record of five America’s Cup challenges and has won just about every classic yacht race going, including the Fastnet and the Sydney Hobart Race, which Fischer has competed in on 40 occasions.

‘It’s a long flight to get here from Australia but I have to say it has been worth it, great conditions similar to Hawaii when I used to compete there in the Kenwood Cup. This is my first visit to Antigua but I have enjoyed the sailing so far and it was great to get a win today. We have only had the boat for a very short time and it always takes a bit to get a new yacht up to speed.’

Antipodes beat Peter Harrison’s charter yacht Sojana in today’s race by less than a minute. However Sojana has a virtually unassailable lead in the division. Jan Rupert’s Tripp 75 yacht Blackbird is in third.

In CSA 1B, Stefan Lenhert’s Tripp 56 sailing yacht Passion 4C had an outstanding protest dismissed last night and came out for today’s race meaning business to take the race by over two minutes on corrected time from Peruvian NM92 yacht Locura skippered by Hector Velarde. The result means that Passion 4C now leads the division. However, the win for Passion 4C was not as straight forward as it might seem. Approaching the bottom mark for the first time, Passion 4C’s genoa halyard parted company from the sail, sending it into the water. The crew quickly gathered the sail whist still flying their spinnaker and perfected a last minute manoeuvre to avoid losing any time. Slick crew work definitely won Passion 4C’s race today. Locura is second overall but Richards Matthews’ Oyster 82 superyacht Zig Zag could only manage a third today, knocking it off the podium position.

In CSA 2, Dragon Fly Plus is the new leader after winning today’s race. The Swan 53′s boat captain is Frank Brown from Florida and he explains the unique set up of the elegant 2007 edition from Nautor Swan. “Dragon Fly has a dagger board rather than a keel, which we can raise downwind to reduce drag. To accomplish this, the yacht has significant internal ballast, so today’s deep water race was ideal for us as we go just fine in a sea state upwind. Ulrich Rohde is a close friend of the yacht’s owner and we have crew from Austria, Canada and America on board. Antigua Sailing Week is a new experience for many of the crew and I have to say we are enjoying ourselves on and off the water!”

Chris Brand’s Swan 53 yacht Merel Four was fourth today and remains in third position overall. However Christian Reynolds’ Swan 51, Northern Child scored a third today and is tied with the same number of points.

In CSA 3, Richard Wesslund’s J/120 El Ocaso was unstoppable today, taking its fourth straight bullet of the regatta by some distance. Don Payan’s Farr 40 yacht Rigel got a great start but could not hold off El Ocaso and on corrected time also lost out to Mario Martinez’s First 40 sailing yacht Smile and Wave.

In CSA 4, American Calvin Reed’s First 40.7 Elandra steered by John Linton kept up its winning ways by taking the fourth race of the series by two minutes after time correction. Sir Hugh Bailey’s First 456 yacht Hugo B could only manage a fourth place today but the Antiguan local yacht is still second overall.

In CSA 5, Stephen Carson’s Dehler 34 sailing yacht Hightide put in an impressive performance today, winning both races to put pressure on class leader Geoffrey Pidduck’s Six Meter, Biwi Magic. Hightide’s Stephen Carson spoke dockside after racing today. “I can’t really pin down one area that brought us success today but we started well and the crew work was excellent and if you don’t make mistakes you often end up winning. But Biwi Magic was very quick today and it was very close, especially in the last race of the day, which we only won by half a minute.”

In CSA 6, David Chatterton’s Jeanneau 49 yacht Resting Goose was once again the victor, scoring their third and fourth wins of the regatta. Last year’s class winner, Seal, owned and steered by Vincent White had its best day so far scoring two third place finishes to lift them to second overall. Phil Munday’s Great Escape of Southampton is third in class. However, Eduardo Lentz’s Voilactus and Alex Johnstone’s Blue Water Sailing Grenada are also very much in contention.

In the Bareboat Class a tremendous battle has developed in Bareboat 3 between three boats chartered by KH+P. Horst Schultze’s Sea You Later is the current leader but Alexander Pfeiffer’s L’Oiseau des Iles won the last race of the day and is just a single point off the lead. Andreas Kadelbach’s Cayenne is just two points behind the class leader.

Tonight, Ky-Mani Marley will play to a full house in the historic setting of Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour. Thousands of fans of the reggae artist are expected to pack out the Antigua Sailing Week venue for the live concert performed by Bob Marley’s son. Tomorrow is Lay Day on Pigeon Beach beginning at 2:30 pm, so it could well be a late night for many of the competitors at Antigua Sailing Week.

Company85 Global Challenge Superyacht Accomplish More to use Cerion Energy’s GO2 diesel fuel additive

Cerion Energy’s DAME Award winning GO2 diesel fuel additive will be used this year aboard the motor yacht Accomplish More for the Company85 Global Challenge round the World powerboat record attempt, as decided by world record adventurer Alan Priddy. The Accomplish More superyacht is supposed to be the fastest as well as most efficient eco-friendly wave-piercing powerboat ever constructed to circumnavigate the globe.

The Challenge is a bid by British ocean adventurer Alan Priddy to design and build the fastest and most efficient wave-piercing powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, breaking not just the existing 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes powerboat record, but the 45 days 13 hours 42 minutes sailing record. The ultimate goal is the fastest ever surface circumnavigation of the world.

“All the way along, we’ve been at pains to explain that the Company85 Global Challenge powerboat Accomplish More has been designed to be as fuel efficient as possible. GO2’s proven ability to improve fuel efficiency up to 14% will be incredibly valuable to the Challenge” says Alan Priddy. “The primary motive behind our interest in GO2 is to get the greatest range that we can on one fill of fuel, and thus cut down on time spent in port. However we also hope that GO2, together with the range of new technologies we’re bringing together, can show a way forward to develop ever-more efficient vessels for the future.”

Landon Mertz, General Manager of Cerion Energy, the manufacturer of GO2, explains: “We’re delighted that Alan has the confidence in GO2 to make it an integral part of his World record attempt. He is an engineer at heart and quickly understood the science behind GO2 and how it will benefit him during the challenge. We expect GO2 to make a huge difference, not only reducing total fuel consumption by up to 14%, but also by reducing soot by up to 40%, unburned hydrocarbons by up to 70% and by making significant reductions in other emissions, helping towards Alan’s goal of minimising the overall environmental impact of this World record attempt.”

Once the luxury yacht Accomplish More is launched, the team will be undertaking extensive sea trials in order to establish accurate data on fuel burn rates under a range of conditions. This data will be used during the Challenge itself to drive Accomplish More at her highest possible average speed, taking into account the reduced fuel burn rate due to using GO2.

Says Alan Priddy: “our 30,000 litre fuel tanks are the primary factor in determining the average speed that we can maintain on each leg. Using GO2 will enable us to make that fuel go a great deal further, or to maintain a much higher average speed. Its overall impact on our prospects for success in our World record attempt is nothing short of revolutionary.”

The second day of Antigua Sailing Week saw another day of fantastic racing conditions, providing some high octane competing at the end of the day 2 of this popular race in the sublime waters on the leeward side of Antigua. So far Antigua Sailing Week has offered dream-like conditions. The crews experienced a wild ride downwind through the amazing Caribbean sea, thanks to their heavy upwind work mixed up with warm sea spray breaking over the deck.

Peter Harrison’s Farr 115 team on the luxury charter yacht Sojana continued to deliver in CSA 1A with another two bullets to top the class, but Sojana was pushed hard in the last race of the day. Jan Rupert’s Tripp 75 sailing yacht Blackbird posed a big threat and after time correction was less than a minute behind the winners. Geoff Hill’s Santa Cruz 72 yacht Antipodes, with legendary Australian sailor Syd Fischer on board, posted a second and a third today, claiming second place in the series just two points behind Sojana.

In CSA 1B, Stefan Lehnert’s Passion 4C had a great day on the water winning both races, with Hector Velarde’s NM92 yacht Locura showing great speed to post two second places. However the result of Race 3 is subject to a protest in which Locura is calling Passion 4C to the room. Richard Matthews’ Oyster 82 superyacht Zig Zag leads the division, Passion 4C is currently in second place and consistent sailing from OnDeck’s Farr 65 yacht Spirit of Isis has the team in third place but only on countback. Oyster 82 sailing yacht Starry Night of the Caribbean ripped its mainsail in the first race and hope to have it repaired to get back on the race track tomorrow.

In CSA 2, Chris Brand’s Swan 52 yacht Merel Four started the day with a lowly fifth, ten minutes behind the winner, Ulrich Rohde’s Swan 53 yacht Dragon Fly Plus. However, Merel Four finished the day on a high, scoring its first win of the regatta. Dragon Fly Plus scored two podium finishes to claim second in the series just one point behind the class leader, Ross Applebey’s Oyster 48 sailing yacht Scarlet Oyster.

In CSA 3, Richard Wesslund’s J/120 El Ocaso stamped its authority on the class with two more victories today. However, Don Payan’s Farr 40 yacht Rigel found an extra gear in the last race of the day to come within a minute of spoiling El Ocaso’s perfect score line. It might be the jet lag, the Royal Hong Kong team on First 40 yacht Lancelot, skippered by Nick Burns was called OCS again today but the squad showed determination and scored two podium finishes to claim third overall in the class.

CSA 4 produced the most competitive race of the day. Race 2 was eventually won by Sir Hugh Bailey’s Hugo B much to the delight of his crew. In a photo finish Hugo B corrected out to beat reigning class champion Elandra, owned by American Calvin Reed and helmed by John Linton by just ten seconds. Carlo Falcone’s Caccia alla Volpe was a very close third. Elandra came back to take the last race of the day with Hugo B second and Jonty Layfield’s J/39 Sleeper had a great race to take third. After three races, Elandra leads the class but Hugo B is just one point behind.

Doctor John has been racing on Hugo B for 20 years. He comes from Seattle but ask any of the Bailey family and they will tell you he is an adopted son of Antigua. “That was just fantastic racing today, most of the time the competition was so close you could have reached out and touched them. Hugo B is 28 years old and a lot heavier than Elandra. If the wind keeps blowing we have a chance, so fingers crossed that these wonderful conditions continue but you can be sure that Hugo B will be giving it everything we’ve got.”

In CSA 5 Geoffrey Pidduck’s Six Meter, Biwi Magic was unstoppable today, demonstrating some awesome upwind speed and no short amount of guile, which was demonstrated by a fantastic manoevre on the first windward beat of the day. Biwi Magic lee bowed a larger boat and showed great pointing ability to climb up and over the top of the competition to make the top mark by some distance. Tanner Jones’ J/30 Blue Peter had another good day to take second place but Stephen Carson’s Dehler 34 yacht Hightide was pushing hard and was only 11 seconds behind on corrected time.

In CSA 6, David Chatterton’s Jeanneau 49 sailing yacht Resting Goose is having an excellent start to Antigua Sailing Week, scoring their second win of the series by some margin. After two races, Alex Johnstone’s Bluewater Sailing Grenada is in second place with Phil Munday’s Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 52.2 yacht Great Escape of Southampton in third. Today was a better day for the Argentinean skipper of Voilactus, Eduardo Lentz, which scored a second today after retiring from racing yesterday.

In the Bareboat fleet, Canadian Dave Read racing Jamais had a great day on the water. “This is my first Antigua Sailing Week and I am here with my two sons, Jake (20) and Merrick (21). We like to take one sailing trip together every year. We normally sail at home on Lake Ontario but the water temperature is mighty cold at this time of the year. We had heard so much about this event and it has been just fantastic sailing and to be moored up in English Harbour with a great crowd, well it doesn’t get much better than that.”

The Antigua Sailing Week video team, Acquafilms were out today ripping it up on Peter Aschenbrenner’s 63ft trimaran yacht Paradox and Ross Applebey’s Scarlet Oyster.

Tonight’s Prize Giving takes place on the lawn at the Antigua Yacht Club and after the winners have cleared the stage, rock band Itchy Feet will rip it up. The wicked local band doesn’t play to empty dance floors! Racing continues for all classes tomorrow; weather forecasts predicts that normal service will continue; good wind and waves should result in more adrenalin pumping action at Antigua Sailing Week.
