December 10, 2010

Christopher Seymour, having only just opened his design studio, has started off big with a Luxury Explorer superyacht design called ALPINE measuring just over 122m (122.55m/408ft). Motor yacht ALPINE was designed with exploration in mind and she will be able to travel to the hot and tropical conditions of the Caribbean, or to the cold and isolated climate of the arctic regions.

The Expedition yacht ALPINE was designed to be able to take on most, if not all conditions that the weather throws at her with her high sides, while boasting a gorgeous sheer line and open flowing decks.

Motor yacht ALPINE will feature the main dining room, theatre, gym, library, and VIP suite on Deck One.  Located on Deck Two above, will be the owner or special guest suite, which will also have access to the main helicopter pad. Deck Two will also house a more exclusive dining area, with a lounge and bar situated on the back deck overlooking the main pool area.

Deck Three of the ALPINE motor yacht design will host more living areas, with lounges on the outside deck, a second helicopter pad and the bridge. Deck Three will have further access to Deck Four, which is where another pool and sun chairs are located for further relaxing while enjoying the spectacular view.

The ‘Main Deck’ of this superyacht design ALPINE is located under ‘Deck One’ and will feature more guests cabins and the crew quarters. Luxury motor yacht design Alpine will boast a beautiful spiral stair case and a cylindrical glass elevator, which will enable access throughout all the decks.

Towards M/Y Alpine’s stern will be the two tender bays, the starboard side door will turn into a swim/dive plat form. The port side will fold up to help crane Yacht Alpines tenders into the water. She will have room for a RIB inflatable, small sailing tenders and a couple of jet skis. Designed Christopher Seymour has also penned a custom 36’ express sports fisher, which will be built by Lightning Yachts and will utilize the latest materials available. The custom tender can be set for cruising, with clever fold in sun beds, or setup for a serious day fishing tournament.

Explorer superyacht ALPINE’s propulsion will be delivered by diesel-electric engines, with approximately 6 x 2000kW gensets, which will power two Pod drive units, she will have an estimated top speed of around 18 knots, and estimated cruise speed of around 15 knots.

Sailing yacht Christopher launched at Pendennis

December 07, 2010

Sailing yacht Christopher, a 46m performance cruising ketch built by Pendennis with Naval Architecture by Ron Holland has been launched at the Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, Uk.

There was a great celebration at Pendennis Shipyard this weekend when their latest New Build, superyacht Christopher, departed the construction facility to be launched into Falmouth waters. After the impressive yacht Christopher was manoeuvred into position over the slipway by the yard’s 400 ton travel hoist, Father Jonathan Bielawski from St Mary’s Immaculate Parish Church commenced the ceremony with a customary blessing, followed by the launch itself. Following tradition the Owners named the yacht and smashed champagne on her bow before S/Y Christopher was manoeuvred around to Pendennis’ new undercover outer dock facility, which has doubled the length of the covered dock space at Pendennis to over 150m.

A new launch at the yard provides the team that have been working tirelessly on sailing yacht Christopher, for a year and a half with a real sense of pride in their achievements, highlighted by over 400 Pendennis staff and their families attending the festivities. The Owners enjoyed the opportunity to celebrate alongside the project team, including Ron Holland who was responsible for ketch Christopher’s Naval Architecture and worked in partnership with the yard’s design team to develop the stunning interior of the vessel.

The project commenced at the end of 2008 when Pendennis announced the partnership with Ron Holland Design and Palm Beach Yachts International to build a new 46m performance cruising ketch. Following on from a detailed three-month design and planning phase the first aluminium kit arrived at the yard in April 2009 at which point the build commenced. Although the 22 month build timeline was extremely challenging Pendennis maintained an effective schedule of works due to detailed pre-planning and efficient decision making throughout. The strong partnership between the clients, designers and Pendennis’ project team enabled successful delivery of superyacht Christopher   to Pendennis’ usual uncompromising high standards, resulting in an impressive example of the very best in superyacht design and construction.

‘’Pendennis was chosen to build Christopher due to the successful build quality and delivery timing we had experienced with our earlier designs they had launched. They have not let us down.” explained Ron Holland. “Christopher is a magnificent example of world class yacht building. We look forward to showing her off during the forthcoming St Barths Bucket Regatta in March.’’

The Owners are also delighted with the results “We are thrilled with the beautiful yacht that Pendennis has created, and feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with the team in Falmouth. Throughout the build of Christopher they have been extremely professional and accommodating to our requests. Not only have we enjoyed a fantastic working partnership but have also made some wonderful new friends, and are now really excited about racing her in St Barths!”

Sailing yacht Christopher Features:

• LOA 46m (150.9ft)

• Draft 3.8m (12.5ft keel up), 9.4m (31ft keel down)

• Beam 9.5m (31.2ft)

• Naval Architects Ron Holland Design

• Interior Design Ron Holland Design & Pendennis

The Christopher yacht contains three staterooms and a study providing the Owners and their guests with accommodation for up to 12, with a further four cabins to sleep up to eight crew. The rig is due in January, alongside the final interior and exterior finishing before she is delivered in time to race in the St Barths Bucket Regatta at the end of March 2011.

Building on hundreds of years of local maritime heritage, Pendennis has become one of Cornwall’s most important employers – with 350 highly skilled trades people based at their 6.5 acre prime water front location in Falmouth, UK. Recent infrastructure developments at the yard have seen their outer 75m dry dock completely enclosed and the addition of a 55m (L) x 17m (H) x 16m (W) covered tented space on hard standing in the centre of the yard. Both bring additional flexible undercover space for Pendennis to develop both new build and refit contracts. The current projects at Pendennis are:

The Drettmann-Sunrise Group: a new superyacht builder is born.

December 01, 2010

From Bremen, Antalya and Monte-Carlo: The Drettmann-Sunrise Group, a new group of yachting companies emerges at the initiative of Herbert P. Baum, the German businessman and yachtsman who co-founded Sunrise Yachts, bringing together expertise and resources from Germany, Turkey and Monaco to offer high-quality, cost-effective yacht building solutions and services to the international market.

The focus of the group’s strategy is the re-birth of the Drettmann brand – from a successful yacht marketing firm founded 40 years ago by the Drettmann family in Bremen to what will now be a full-fledged yacht-building company with operations in Germany and Turkey. The brand will be launched – together with new yacht designs – at Boot Düsseldorf, Germany’s leading international boat show (January 22-30, 2011).

Drettmann Yachts, the rebirth of a brand

“Build me a German-quality yacht at Turkish price, and I’ll be the happiest yachtsman in the world”. This comment, ventured half-jokingly by a prospective client at Sunrise Yachts in the middle of the economic crisis, triggered what may become one of the most ambitious endeavours in the history of the superyacht industry.

The concept soon found an opportunity to materialize when Herbert Baum and Guillaume Roché, founders of Sunrise Yachts, met with Claudia and Albert Drettmann, who had tremendously grown the family group over the last 20 years, until the recent economic crisis and its consequences on the yachting market forced the company to file for insolvency in May 2010.

Drettmann had been successfully marketing several brands, including the Bandido, Elegance and Premier lines built in major shipyards in Taiwan and significantly contributed to the growth of those companies in recent years. The company also operates world-class manufacturing and refit facilities at its headquarters in Bremen.

Drettmann's Bandido 170 superyacht

Drettmann's Bandido 170 superyacht

The thorough discussions carried out since last summer between the founders of Sunrise Yachts and the Drettmann family resulted in an enthusiastic decision: to combine facilities, resources and expertise from Germany and Turkey to re-launch the Drettmann brand as a highly competitive alternative to North European yacht-building in specific segments of the superyacht market.

Product lines and activities

In addition to the superyacht designs created at Sunrise Yachts, the company will introduce new product lines – starting at the Düsseldorf Boat Show in January 2011 – focusing on the core business and loyal client-base developed by Claudia and Albert Drettmann over the years. The activities of the company will now include:

- Drettmann Motoryachts (semi-displacement) – 20m to 37m (composite construction)

- Drettmann Explorers – 27 to 37m and above (steel & aluminium construction)

- Drettmann Superyachts – 46 to 65m by Espen Øino (steel & aluminium construction)

- Drettmann Classics – 12 to 18m (composite construction)

- Custom motoryacht projects in the 40 to 65m size range in collaboration with world-class yacht designers

- Refit up to 600 tons – to be increased soon to 1,200 tons (current projects include a 41m KaiserWerft, a 47m Heesen, and a 27m Kingship)

Group philosophy

The new Drettmann Yachts concept will make a yachtsman’s dream come true: bringing design, engineering, project management, quality control and interior outfitting from Northern Europe together with Turkey’s skilled and competitive workforce to offer yachts of uncompromising quality at a price level compatible with current market trends and client expectation. In a few words, the best brand / value-for-money available on the market. An unprecedented 3- year warranty policy will manifest the brand’s ambition in terms of quality and reliability.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2005 on a like-minded philosophy and, in an intense five years, has fast-tracked its recognition as one of the leading yacht builders in Turkey: setting-up an 11,000 m2 state-of-the-art facility in Antalya; bringing together a world class management, engineering and construction team from Europe, North America and Turkey; building two 45-metre motor-yachts, including the now widely publicized “Africa”, with design by Paolo Scanu and interior design by Franck Darnet; developing new designs with leading yacht designer Espen Oeino. Additionally, work is well under way on a 63m and a 47m contract.

Herbert Baum states: “This strategy is our answer to a definite need in our industry. We are building up a brand that will meet the new expectations of this changing market: a smaller number of clients worldwide, seeking the ultimate value for their investment while unwilling to see the technological sophistication and overall quality standards demonstrated on the world’s best yachts compromised in any way. This was precisely our approach at Sunrise Yachts for the last years, and we are very confident we will deliver on the promise. Our ambition is to make Drettmann Yachts one of the most compelling propositions on the market.”

Guillaume Roché, Herbert’s British-French partner, a yacht-builder who will be managing the new operation, elaborates: “A German brand means a German product, with all of the positive connotations associated with the nation who has set the standard for more than a century in industrial processes and quality. Although we are proud of the level of quality achieved on our first projects at Sunrise, the new strategy means developing our operation quite extensively with the input of our German team: further integrating our engineering, growing our project management and quality control teams; establishing new interior outfitting partnerships, and more. This is definitely the most exciting project I encountered in my twenty years career as a yacht-builder”.

The Drettmann add: “Throughout its history, our company has met with great success and was also faced with challenges, and we are proud to see our brand re-launched with the ambition to equal the great North European yachtbuilders and to offer our clients spectacular new designs, a higher level of quality than ever and a very cost-effective construction solution. Our clients are the heart and soul of our business, and delivering on their dream with attentive and sensible answers has always been our philosophy.”

As part of its new strategy, the Group is also currently negotiating the acquisition of a yacht consulting, marketing and management company which will provide services to Drettmann clients and help improve their yachting experience.

LIMITED EDITIONS AMELS 212 SUPERYACHT LAUNCHED

December 01, 2010

A proud moment as the Dutch shipbuilder launches the first LIMITED EDITIONS AMELS 212 ahead of schedule.

Emerging into the light is the first LIMITED EDITIONS AMELS 212 yacht, the largest yacht yet produced to the Dutch shipyard’s successful LIMITED EDITIONS formula.

Managing director Rob Luijendijk says this latest launch provides further confirmation that customers really appreciate the AMELS combination of proven, high quality and speed of delivery. “The success of the LIMITED EDITIONS concept has firmly established AMELS as the market leader in the premium semi-custom segment. We pioneered the concept with the AMELS 171 and 177, and now we are expanding the range to the AMELS 212, and soon the AMELS 242 luxury motor yacht.”

Now with the yacht just weeks from completion, and set for delivery well ahead of schedule, the beautiful lines of this 65.5m design are becoming clear to see. The sculpted, feminine form of the AMELS 212 yacht demonstrates why Tim Heywood is in such high demand today, while Andrew Winch’s interior complements the Heywood exterior perfectly. She is planned to be displayed by AMELS at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show.

At 1503 Gross Tons, this first AMELS 212 superyacht features two VIP cabins on the bridge deck, each with sliding-window access to a private balcony. A centrally-located glass elevator makes for easy and elegant access to all parts of the yacht, including the ‘wet feet’ bar on the sun deck and the large Beach Club located at the stern. There is ample storage for a range of beach toys and also for two 8.5m tenders. Watch the full AMELS 212 animation film on at amels-holland.com.

The launch delivery of this first AMELS 212 motor yacht is one of 10 projects under construction, and the yard in Vlissingen is buzzing with activity, the facility operating at 100% capacity. Due for launch a year after her sistership is the second AMELS 212, just visible in the background of the picture, housed at the back of the 140m covered dock at the AMELS shipyard. Hull No.2 is being fitted with a grand owner’s deck, demonstrating the flexibility of layout and interior options available to the owner of a LIMITED EDITIONS yacht.

AMELS is the exclusive yacht-building member of the Dutch DAMEN Shipyards Group, the largest shipyard in the Netherlands, consisting of more than 34 shipyards companies throughout the world. DAMEN, a family owned company, employs over 6,700 people, delivered 150 vessels in 2009 and has an annual turnover of approximately €1.4 billion.
