RS Global building specialist refit centre in Palma de Mallorca opens

The modernised and refurbished RS Global building located in the heart of the STP (Servicios Técnicos Portuarios) superyacht refit and repair yard in Palma de Mallorca was officially opened at a ceremony on Thursday the 3rd of November 2011.

The locally based chandlery, rigging and yacht-painting specialists Rolling Stock Group took over the building last year which used to provide canteen facilities for workers and crews in the area as well as a workshop and storage facility. The newly fitted building now boasts a new restaurant called the Dock Bar, as well as modern well-appointed offices for up to 20 local and international superyacht refit and repair specialists.

The STP yard has had massive investment in the last few years with RS Global having been awarded the 12 year concession by the Balearics Port Authority to manage the building, which offer approximately 3,000 square meters of rentable workshop and office space on two floors, including the bar/restaurant.

The STP superyacht yard is well equipped with 5 travel lifts able to lift greater than 750Ton, in excess of 50 berths for yachts up to 90m in length, 55,000 m2 of hard standing for vessels up to 60m, and 6 Keel pits for sailing vessels up to 60m, STP superyacht yard is one of the biggest facilities in the Mediterranean with regards to surface area and moorings dedicated to yacht refit and repair.

The new RS Global building greatly improve the facilities already within the shipyard, allowing marine trades the opportunity to be strategically placed within the STP shipyard in Palma, Spain. The opening of the RS Global building was attended by VIP guests and local authorities including the President of The Balearic Port Authority, Sr.Jose Maria Urrutia Mera,  the President of The Mallorca Chamber of Commerce, Sr. Juan Gual de Torrela, and Margarita Dahlberg, President of The Balearic Nautical Business Association (AENB)

Employees at Interlux® North America headquarters in New Jersey recently used the company’s antifouling, topcoat and deck paint systems on the sailing yacht Catalina 22, to know better what Interlux customers experience during the bottom painting process and to get acquainted with the products included InterProtect 2000E epoxy barrier coat, Trilux 33 antifouling, 404 Epoxy primer, Perfection topcoat and Interdeck and with the company manufactures.

The company acquired the sailing yacht Catalina 22 in need of serious restoration and employees from the factory, warehouse, customer service, accounting and purchasing departments got the opportunity to see first hand how to restore the exterior of a yacht to make it look like new.

However, only half the yacht was painted from bow to stern. “We decided to use the opportunity to educate and inform boat owners what they can truly achieve, without much knowledge or training in paint. There is nothing like showing the ‘before and after’. It’s really striking what you can do. This yacht was in very poor condition, so if you have a yacht in reasonable condition, the job will be even easier. If you can paint your kitchen cabinets, you can paint your yacht,” said Interlux North America Marketing Manager Elenor Ekman.

146m fast ferry Capricorn to be converted into a luxury superyacht

The 146m motor yacht Capricorn which has been operating as a fast ferry is to be converted into a superyacht. The Capricorn yacht was built in 1999 by Fincantieri and will be rebuilt as a 152m superyacht.

The fast ferry Capricorn is able to reach 40 knots thanks to four diesel engines and two gas turbines providing 95,000hp of power.  The system includes two double inlet reduction gears (diesel shafts), two reduction gears (gas turbines), two booster waterjets (gas turbines) and two wing steering waterjets (diesel shafts).  The gas turbines are connected to two booster waterjets, and the diesels are connected to the biggest steering water jets ever built by KaMeWa. The high flexibility of the propulsion system enables the yacht Capricorn to have three operative speeds.

The owner of the Capricorn motor yacht is looking to select a team of designers and naval architects along with a superyacht yard to complete the important refit project.

Southern Spars´ new rig for J-Class charter yacht Endeavour

J-Class charter yacht Endeavour has been equipped with a new 53.7 meter (176.18ft) gold-tipped mast and rigging package from Southern Spars. It was a part of Endeavour superyacht´s multi-million dollar refit in Auckland, New Zealand, which was completed in early October.

Originally built in 1934 and reduced to being a complete wreck in the 1980s, Endeavour superyacht’s 2011 re-launch marks the completion of an extensive 18-month refit at Yachting Developments’ yard based in Hobsonville, Auckland. The Yachting Developments’ team has taken extreme care throughout the refit to preserve as much of the yacht as practical while taking advantage of 21st century sailing systems, such as a carbon fibre mast and EC6 carbon fibre rig package from Southern Spars for enhanced performance and improved functionality.

J-Class Endeavour yacht’s future performance will benefit from the significant weight savings – an incredible 900kg on the boom, and three tonne on the rig and rigging from her previous rig – achieved by the Southern Spars’ Custom Projects team based in Avondale, Auckland.

No expense was spared during the restoration of the luxury yacht Endeavour, and the rig itself is no different, says Southern Spars project manager Olivier Marthe.

“She utilises the latest Element C6 (EC6) continuous carbon fibre rigging technology, a 19m (62.33’) high modulus carbon fibre Park Avenue boom and to top it all off, the mast crane that sits at the very tip of the 53.7m high modulus carbon fibre mast is coated in gold leaf,” says Marthe.

“Being involved in the restoration of this classic America’s Cup yacht has been a dream come true for me personally; I have had an amazing week sailing on her during the sea trials.”

After completion of sea trials over the next few months sailing yacht Endeavour will spend some time on Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour tuning the famous yacht which carries the legend JK4 yacht on her sails. In February she will be shipped to the Northern Hemisphere ready to compete in the J-Class regattas in Falmouth and Solent timed to coincide with the 2012 London Olympics.

Southern Spars Custom-Projects facility in Auckland are also currently completing work on the new J-Class sailing yacht Rainbow’s rig and rigging package.

Yachting Developments is pleased to announce the launching of the iconic J Boat Endeavour, having completed an extensive 18 month refit at their Hobsonville yard in Auckland.  There was a long term philosophy of longevity and serviceability throughout the refit ensuring sailing yacht Endeavour will remain an historic Icon for future generations. Sailing yacht Endeavour will spend the next few months in Auckland, sailing and tuning up before commencing a busy racing schedule planned for the Caribbean and European summers.

Absolute care was taken throughout the refit of the 130′ J Class loop Endeavour sailing yacht to preserve as much of the vessel as practical while taking advantage of twenty first century sailing systems, enhanced performance and improved functionality.

The comprehensive refit of the Endeavour JK4 included the removal and replacement of the complete weather deck and all deck equipment. Steel deck framing was relocated to accommodate the new load paths of the new deck layout.

The Naval Architects Dykstra & Partners were instrumental in the design of the new sail plan, deck layout, and structural engineering. Her main engine, generators, hydraulic systems, winches, electrical system, electronics, bow thruster and air conditioning were replaced or upgraded. Southern Spars of Auckland built the new carbon fibre mast with carbon standing rigging.

John Munford and Adam Lay reconfigured the accommodation forward of the mast and the Endeavour yacht has a new interior, built in-house by Yachting Developments tradesmen.

Jon Barrett Associates whom have had over 25 years’ experience in this role with Endeavour was the owner’s project manager.

After her sea trials, S/Y Endeavour will tune up on Auckland harbor prior to being shipped in February to the northern hemisphere to compete in the 2012 J Class regattas timed to coincide with the Olympics.

History of the Classic Superyacht Endeavour JK4

Endeavour was commissioned by Sir T.O.M. Sopwith and built by Camper & Nicholson at Gosport England to challenge for the America’s Cup in 1934. Having prepared his campaign in Shamrock V, Sopwith was keen to ensure that this yacht was the most advanced design possible. With his experience designing aircraft Sopwith applied aviation technology to Endeavour’s rig and winches and spared nothing to make her the finest vessel of her day.

From launching in 1934 she continued her preparation by competing against sailing yacht Shamrock V (then owned by Sir Richard Fairey) and the newly launched Velsheda (owned by W.L Stephenson). She swept through the British racing fleet and into the hearts of yachtsmen the world around, winning many races in her first season. Like many before her, Endeavour did not win the Cup but she came closer to doing so than any other challenger.

S/Y Endeavour pioneered the development of the Quadrilateral genoa, a two clewed headsail offering immense sail area and power, and still used on J Class yachts racing today. She also had a larger and better designed spinnaker but Sopwith was let down by poor crewing. Just prior to departure for the USA, his professional crew went on strike for more money and Sopwith was forced to round up keen amateur sailors, who had the enthusiasm but not the experience. Afterwards, she returned to England to dominate the British racing scene until 1938 when she was laid up prior to the war.

Over the next 46 years, yacht Endeavour passed through many hands, her fate often hanging by a thread. Among other indignities, she was sold to a scrap merchant in 1947 only to be saved by another buyer hours before her demolition was due to begin. In the seventies, she sank in the Medina River in Cowes. Again at the eleventh hour, she was bought for ten pounds sterling by two carpenters who patched the holes in her hull with plastic bags and got her afloat again. In the early eighties, Endeavour sat in an abandoned seaplane base in southern England. She was a complete wreck, a rusting and forlorn hulk with no keel, rudder, ballast or interior.

REBUILD

In 1984 Endeavour was purchased and undertook a five year rebuild. The Endeavour yacht sailed again, on June 22, 1989, for the first time in 52 years.

Between 1989 and 1999 Endeavour cruised extensively and competed in numerous races, creating a wonderful spectacle In April 1999, history repeated itself when she was joined by S/ Y Shamrock V and Velsheda to compete in the Antigua Classics Regatta, bringing in a new era of J Class sailing a sight not seen in over 60 years

The 52.43m (172′) expedition motor yacht SuRi is to undergo a full rebuild and extension of 10.9m (36 foot) at Bay Ship and Yacht Co. Located in Alameda, California, Bay Ship and Yacht Co. (BSY) in collaboration with naval architects Kirilloff and Associates of Green Cove springs, Florida, and Jeffrey Botwin of Herringbone Design of Los Angeles, California were awarded the contract to lengthen the shadow support superyacht SuRi by adding a 36 foot mid-body hull and superstructure plug for a new overall length of 63.4m (208 feet)

The Sun Deck of yacht SuRi will be extended aft 24 feet to allow for the owner’s new alfresco dining area plus a complete main engine and generator renewal package. In the hull of the extension area, a new underwater viewing room will be added that will allow guests to view the ocean from the comfort of M/Y SuRi’s elegant interior.

BSY won the contract for this work by competing internationally against New Zealand and Australian shipyards.  Since the 2008 financial crash, American super yacht refit yards have suffered severely, with far fewer projects planned, and those that did materialize mostly going to Europe.

BSY’s competitive spirit and its ability to perform this type of work with its skilled tradesmen and local vendor support helped win this contract.  The motor yacht SuRi refit will be accomplished using 99% American made products and Subcontractors, thus generating many jobs in the local economy, and is noted to be the largest yacht refit and modification project done in the United States in many years.  All work will be overseen by the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and San Francisco, California offices of Bureau Veritas, the yacht’s classification society.

The SuRi yacht is an American built hull that was converted in Seattle in 2007/2008 and is owned by an American (California) yachtsman.

Obviously, a larger, longer, and heavier boat will offer enhancements to the guest experience other than the accommodations. With new engines offering more horsepower, quieter running, less environmental impact, the guest experience is also enhanced. The explorer yacht SuRi’s speed will increase because of the added horsepower and will be more fuel efficient. The new generators will also be quieter, have less environment impact and be more fuel efficient. Because there is an increased amount of mass of the yacht in terms of ballast, the ride comfort will also be increased.

Guest Accommodation Enhancements

Sun Deck: The longer and expanded sun deck of shadow support vessel SuRi will offer more square footage, a larger sunning and “in shade” areas and will continue to have the high level of finish currently present on SuRi.

Bridge and Helo Deck: This deck has received the full length of the mid body of 36 feet. All of the added length happen aft of the existing lounge and a spacious fully glass enclosed guest lounge has been added to the already comfortable and elegant main lounge. The new guest lounge on M/Y SuRi can either be closed off in glass, fully climate controlled and become a part of the existing expansive lounge or, by closing the existing lounge aft doors, all of the glass panels can be opened to allow for the breeze to cool guests as they enjoy the luxury of the new lounge amenities.

Mezzanine Guest Cabins: Two additional, full beam guest cabins will be installed on the mezzanine level outfitted in a similar style to the existing cabins which are also being expanded and reconfigured. These four guest cabins allow an unobstructed, private view from the yacht.

Main Deck: The main deck of superyacht SuRi also received the full added length of 36 feet in the hangar allowing for the carriage of even more “toys” and tenders than she currently carries.

Hold Deck: In way of where the 36 foot mid body there are two large rooms that offer guest a fully equipped area on the starboard side for exercise, yoga and for additional lounging and meeting area. This space can also be used as a children’s play area.  On the port side of the new hold guest area is a spacious, relaxing and comfortable media room equipped with the latest television and sound system. Also in this space are the “windows to the sea”. There are two large viewing windows on the SuRi yacht that open to the ocean bottom, lit by high intensity lights that will illuminate the ocean and attract sea life to the guests.

Sailing yacht Endeavour touched the water at 8am, onboard systems were commissioned and checked, the new mast was stepped at 11am, the boom was fitted at 1.00pm, Endeavour then moved to her berth at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour on schedule at 2.30pm.

The addition of the Nautor’s Swan Mediterranean Service Centre at La Marina di Scarlino will enhance the network of Nautor’s Swan Authorized Service Yards while offering a unique guarantee of quality and workmanship through the relocation of a Project Manager from the Nautor’s Swan yard in Pietarsaari in Finland.

The focus of services offered at the Mediterranean Service Centre will centre round warrantee work on newly delivered Swans, after sales service for existing Swans and refit work for older models, many of which have only been available at the yard in Finland to date.  The convenience of the location of the Marina di Scarlino for many Swans based in the Mediterranean combined with the Nautor’s Swan skill base and experience will make the Nautor’s Swan Mediterranean Service Centre a unique and compelling offering.

Gunnar Svenfelt, the Project Manager and will transfer from the Customer Service Department in Finland to lead the newly created team in Scarlino.  With 10 years’ experience working as part of the Customer Service team at the yard combined with extensive travel to regattas and when required to offer technical support to Swan owners and inspections and surveys on trade-in yachts, the skill base that Svenfelt offers is unique and an ideal fit.  Svenfelt’s strong understanding of the manufacturing and finishing processes used in the construction of the Swans combined with familiarity with the current Swan Line and historical archive of Swan models will offer Swan owners the quality of service for projects that Nautor’s Swan is renowned for.

The inaugural Superyacht Captains Forum in Auckland, New Zealand from 14 to 16 September achieved its ambitious schedule of superyacht-related topics and gave international superyacht captains a comprehensive overview of New Zealand and the South Pacific as a superyacht cruising and refit destination.

The NZ Marine Export Group’s Superyacht Captains Forum was held at the Auckland International Boat Show and was the first of its kind in the world. It attracted 120 delegates and featured more than 30 speakers.

The forum opened on Wednesday evening with The Superyacht Report cocktail function at which the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Right Honourable John Key, welcomed the captains and encouraged them to bring their owners to New Zealand.

“Bob had very good strategy for superyachts coming from the Panama Canal to New Zealand,” Mr Montgomery said. “He talked about the various stages and where yachts could expect favourable conditions and what to avoid in certain areas, particularly once through the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone.

Rodolphe Holler of Tahiti Private Exhibitions is a marine biologist, underwater photographer and diving guide in the South Pacific. “His presentation included fantastic photography,” Mr Montgomery said.

Captain David Jamieson of Yacht Help Fiji described  the colourful cruising grounds of Fiji and reiterated that the area is becoming increasing user-friendly for superyachts. Derek Leonard of Yacht Help Tonga provided a candid presentation of adventure, Tongan-style. “He made the point that Tonga is what you get,” Mr Montgomery says. “Dogs and chickens may be running around and that is how it is. He told the story of superyacht anchored four miles offshore from a prison on the island. A prisoner swam out four miles to the superyacht so the captain called the authorities and asked: ‘What do we do with him?’

“The reply was: ‘Give him a feed and bring him back.’”

Barry Jenkins, chairman of Superyacht Australia, Captain Cilian Budarlaigh, partner, of Yacht Support Group, Indonesia; and Jean-Jacques Lavigne of Superyacht Singapore Association also described their specialist cruising areas.

The afternoon’s sessions included tax optimisation, foreign exchange and international banking. Murray Sarelius of KPMG made captivating his topic of smarter financial management: mitigation of tax, dealing with multiple currencies and using international banking to your advantage.

The topic of contract management, dealing with classification societies and understanding contractual relationships was covered by Jon Barrett, Jon Barrett Associates Inc; Matthew Flynn, McElroys Barristers and Solicitors; and Nick Cressey, Insurance Brokers International. Their message was that if a good contract is in place, its parties have a good chance of avoiding the final part of their talk: dealing with conflict.

Other topics covered winning International regattas and rallies, destinations around New Zealand and finally a tasting of New Zealand wines led by Mike Spratt, owner of Destiny Bay Vineyards, before visiting the Giant Rugby World with its spectacular three-dimensional visual display and dining at The Cloud, which showcases New Zealand industry.

On Friday, Darren Morton of Kiwi Risk Management Group got the ball rolling as he discussed ‘International security and piracy’. He stressed the need to train captains and crew to deal with emergencies. Pirates are smart, he said. They pretend to be fishermen, are well funded, use high-tech equipment and monitor radio channels.

Maritime law expert Matthew Flynn outlined the legal implications of taking action against pirates, but insurance expert Nick Cressey lightened the mood with a handy-cam video of  not-so-smart pirates who gave a loaded AK47 to a monkey. The monkey was soon calling the shots – literally.

Next, it was time to bring out the toys. Engineer Kim Attwell of Photo Higher showed his $40,000 remote-controlled helicopters which carry gimballed video and still cameras, ideal for expedition yachts.

Hugh Fulton of Q-sub outlined his development of the recreational submarine.

Then, to an area where New Zealand excels: the refit of superyachts. American-based superyacht manager Jon Barrett said owners refit their yachts out of passion not financial gain, so the entire process has to be enjoyable. He advised on cost estimates and how to research yards before signing a contract.

Mark Wightman of Integrated Marine Group followed with a yard’s perspective on running a successful refit.

Clive Bennett, NZ Ship and Workboat Group, showcased New Zealand’s extensive and specialised refit facilities, including those under development at Whangarei, Tauranga and Auckland.

Delegates visited the NZ Marine International Boat Building Competition, part of the Auckland International Boat Show, in which teams of boatbuilders and apprentices from five superyacht companies had demonstrated their innovation in design and boatbuilding in some of the most sophisticated outrigger canoes ever built.

By video, Martin Redmayne, editor-in-chief of The Superyacht Report, media partner to the forum, thanked the delegates for their attendance and encouraged them to contribute to the next session: Your say: the ultimate superyacht facilities’ session, facilitated by marina operator Phil Wardale.

A presentation by Oscar Siches outlined the principles of a good marina – in the eyes of owners, crews, government and operators.

Also by video, Niccolo Porzio di Camporotondo and Mark Drewelow outlined plans for superyacht facilities around the 34th America’s Cup.

Delegates ended the forum with lunch at Marvel Grill restaurant and a Kiwi-style barbecue at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.

Throughout the forum, there was plenty of time for social networking and enjoying some of the Rugby World Cup games. Many delegates said the opportunity to meet other industry members from around the world was a significant reason for attending the forum.

ISS Announces 2011 Design Awards Finalists, Including New Refit Award

Industry’s Original Awards Program, One Based Purely on Peer Review and Selection

ISS (International Superyacht Society) has released its lists of finalists for the 2011 International Design Awards. For more than 20 years, ISS’s Design Awards—based entirely on peer review—has celebrated the very finest naval architecture, design, interiors, engineering and builds the large yacht industry presents annually.

Each year, nominees are submitted to ISS by the large yacht industry’s leading builders, designers and stewards. The categories are as follows:

Power: (3) awards for size categories 24m-40m, 40m-65m, 65m+

Sail: (2) awards for size categories 24m-40m, 40m+

Interior Design: (1) award for power or sail

Best Refit: (1) award for power or sail

The individual selection of five finalists in each award grouping results from the privilege to vote that ISS membership affords. A distinguished and impartial group of judges then weighs the qualifications of each yacht with the winning yachts announced at ISS’s annual International Design Awards Gala, this year on Thursday, 27 October from 7:00 P.M. at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort, Fort Lauderdale. The theme celebrates Launchings!

ISS also recognizes achievement in the business and service of superyachts. During the Gala, ISS Awards of Distinction—Business or Business Person of the Year, Innovation, the ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award as well as the Leadership Award and Distinguished Crew Award—are presented.

The ISS Business (Person) of the Year is awarded to those demonstrating excellence in their area of superyacht expertise within the previous year; nominations come from both the industry and the ISS board with the board making the finalist selections. Previous honourees have included Frans Heesen, Heesen Yachts, John Dane, Trinity Yachts and Corporation of Trinity House.

Open to every aspect of the industry—from crew training to technological advances—the Excellence in Innovation award is given to an individual or business that has demonstrated innovation in their endeavours. Nominations come from the industry and ISS board members vote to determine finalists. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively, Agrimond, Carlisle and Finch and Sailing Yacht Soliloquy, Callender Designs were awarded the Excellence in Innovation honour.

The new ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award, introduced at the 2010 Awards Gala, celebrates stewardship of marine ecosystems. Environmental leadership, global oceanic conservation and resource preservation are prerequisites for nomination. The integration of environmental technologies and resource management with the goal of setting achievable standards and models for wide adaptation in the design, engineering and building of large yachts—and the use of the Earth’s waterways—are essential criteria. Nominations are made by owners and the yachting industry; selection is by panel of judges, including Mr. Cousteau.

ISS’s Leadership Award recognizes an individual or business whose distinctive work and commitment to the industry has contributed—over a substantial period of time—to the sustainable growth of the superyacht community worldwide. Nominations and selection for The Leadership Award are made by those who have received the award in previous years with the previous year’s winner presiding.

The Distinguished Crew Award is presented in years when the DCA award judges are presented with a nomination that represents the essence of the award (nominations are sought industry-wide). Specifically, these honours are designed to recognize yacht crew whose distinguished acts of service best exemplify the standards to which professional yacht crew aspire.
