Alewijnse Marine Systems to boost superyacht yards competitiveness.

October 28, 2010

Leading electrical system integrator Alewijnse is launching a major initiative that will see it working with superyacht yards around the world to lower their production costs without any loss of build quality. The key to the success of this program is Alewijnse’s unique global network of subsidiary companies that allows it to offer skilled labour at competitive prices, yet trained to Dutch standards of delivery and finish.

The initiative will be headed by Kees van Doorn in his new role of Business Development Manager Yachts. An experienced member of the Alewijnse team, he will lead the drive to demonstrate to superyacht yards across Europe and beyond how Alewijnse can provide comprehensive electrical installation packages staffed by skilled technicians from Alewijnse subsidiaries in Romania, Turkey, China and elsewhere, overseen by Dutch project managers. The combination of major savings on labour costs and assured quality has already proved attractive to existing Alewijnse clients, and this move will now make it available to the wider market.

Kees and his team will also act as advisors to superyacht yards on the technological options available to their clients. Alewijnse has long been at the forefront of integrating emerging electro-mechanical technologies into the superyacht sector, aided in part by its extensive experience in the commercial sector where environmental standards have intensified dramatically in recent years. Work on ground-breaking projects such as the E3 harbour tug with its diesel-electric hybrid drive, the fuel cell canal boat now operating in Amsterdam and the renowned eco-sailing yacht Ethereal place Alewijnse at the forefront of the sector and ensure that it has unrivalled links with the companies and institutions developing the next generation of products.

Key markets in the immediate future will be Germany, Turkey and Italy, where reducing costs without compromising quality is a particular priority in the face of Asian competition, but Kees van Doorn sees potential for further growth.

“European quality is particularly attractive to superyacht clients, wherever their yachts are constructed,” he comments, “and with the increasing complexity of onboard electronics these individuals seek the reliability and peace of mind that comes with a first-class installation.”

That complexity has been one of the key factors in the rapid growth that Alewijnse has seen in demand for its services in recent years. “It’s been driven partly by the increase in the volume and variety of equipment that owners are specifying for their yachts,” continues Van Doorn, “but the real advance has been in automation. As the yachts get larger and the systems – particularly those associated with energy conservation and reclamation – more sophisticated, automation becomes a necessity for the yacht to operate effectively. Much of the technology is just too advanced for the average superyacht crewmember to maintain and, as on commercial and military vessels, the systems are now designed to manage themselves and be remotely configured and adjusted by qualified technicians.”

With superyachts set to become even more complex in the future these trends are likely to work to the advantage of electrical integrators like Alewijnse, but few if any have its ability to offer all the benefits of out-sourcing to lower-cost economies while maintaining rigorous quality-control and access to the most advanced design techniques and products. It is this set of capabilities that leaves Alewijnse well placed to take advantage of the winds of change that are currently blowing through the sector.

The new superyacht umarina will cover an area of 900,000 square meters in Tianjin’s booming Binhai district and will have 750 berths to accommodate superyachts up to 92m (300ft). The marina will be part of a larger development that will include five-star hotels, a yacht club and a yacht building and repair area.

Only people with an annual income of over 200,000 yuan ($30,000) will be allowed to sign up for membership to the yacht club to rent a luxury vessel, while members who intend to buy a yacht would need an annual income of over 2 million yuan ($300,000), officials said.

China’s economy has seen a fast-expanding middle class in recent years. The latest Hurun Rich List, which was published on Oct 12th, details the country now has 1,363 billionaires, 97 of them with personal wealth of over 10 billion yuan.

“The time is actually perfect in China for the yacht industry to take off,” said David Brightling, general manager of the yacht club of Hong Kong-based Rainbow Land Holdings Ltd, which is one of the sponsors of Dongjiang yacht port.

“I think one of the things we can do is to train young people to drive any kind of boat and let them have more fun,” Brightling added.

Burgess Marine expands into Superyacht market

October 08, 2010

Announced to coincide with the Monaco Yacht Show UK based Burgess Marine has partnered with the Port of Cherbourg in support of the growing Superyacht refit and repair market in Northern Europe.

Since 2001 Burgess Marine has been the Port of Cherbourg’s primary partner in respect of the Rolls-Royce Syncrolift facility in Cherbourg.  The facility (90m x 32m) comfortably caters for vessels over 90 metres in length and offers a 4500 tonnes lift capacity.  Having for many years utilised the facility in the support of High Speed Craft, operated by Condor Ferries and Brittany Ferries, Burgess Marine now intends to expand its commercial activities on site in the support of both Superyachts and UK based Coasters and Dredgers.

The facility, the largest Syncrolift in the region, is ideally located just 75 miles from Southampton and Portsmouth, 70 miles from Portland, and just 135 miles from the busy Dover Straits.

Mr Nicholas Warren, the Managing Director of Burgess Marine comments “having been in the marine engineering refit and repair business for over 20 years, and here in Cherbourg for nine, this seems the natural evolution for our business.  Recent trends show that there are many more Superyachts either in the region, or transiting through the region, and naturally we’re keen to attract those vessels to Cherbourg for planned or emergency refits, repairs and renewals works”.

Burgess Marine have had a year of successes; having completed and excelled with regard to work packages onboard MY Bystander, SY Infinity, the J Class yacht Velsheda, and a 40m Aluminium new-build.

Mr Warren goes on to say:

“we’re looking forward to the upcoming refit season and 2011 with optimism.  This year we’ve supported Pendennis with regards to the supply of coded, skilled Aluminium welders and fabricators, and I’m keen to achieve two further things

1) to support all Superyacht yards as best is possible with regards to sub con Aluminium and Steel work packages, and medium and high speed diesel works, and

2) expand and build on our commercial partnerships with the likes of Pendennis, Southampton Yacht Services and Trimline”.

Feadship Odyssey Yacht re-launched

October 08, 2010

Feadship De Vries Makkum has re-launched the 41-metre Feadship Motor Yacht Odyssey,  launched for the fist time in 1989 as motor yacht White Rabbit. She was since called yacht Lady Columbo, Ladina and motor yacht Bullish. This significant project comprised of extending the hull by three metres, as well as incorporating noteworthy real estate to the superstructure.

The delighted owners will soon embark for a Caribbean cruise to make the most of the new hydraulic swim platform, hydraulic passerelle and guest lazarette plus a host of other facilities designed to maximise onboard comforts.

The yacht Odyssey (ex Bullish)  was originally purchased in early 2009 by a family looking for a pre-owned yacht to refit to their personal requirements.

“She had to be large enough to cruise the world but still be able to access secluded areas and ports,” explains Feadship Refit Manager Ico Vergouwe. “The owners also sought a quality product that they could be sure would retain her value. As well-maintained Feadships rarely – if ever – drop below their original purchase price, the clients were convinced that a refitted Feadship would offer better value in every sense than a new build with virtually any other motoryacht brand.”

Odyssey Motor Yacht Refit - Image courtesy of Feadship

After the Feadship Refit Team had visited Florida to discuss the project, the owners of the newly refitted super yacht Odyssey had access to all builder’s information, two decades worth of after-sales data, the design and engineering team responsible for the original yacht’s concept and, crucially, the craftsmen who created their new asset.

“Rebuilding a yacht requires a dedicated workforce that is available for the whole project,” adds Vergouwe. “It is also vital that the yard has the right tools to provide the same quality work as on the original build. All too often at maintenance and refit yards around the world, projects are merely facilitated by the yard with the project manager and the accountant being the sole constant factor in the process. You would not build a yacht at such a facility so why rebuild one there?”

The primary leisure-based requirements for Odyssey superyacht were to create a more distinguished lazarette and folding swim platform, have larger aft decks for exterior entertainment and a more elaborate sun deck with a Jacuzzi and sun beds. Once the designers at Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects started developing alternative profile plans and deck layouts, it became clear that accommodating such a wish list would involve lengthening the hull by three metres, enlarging the bridge deck lounge by two metres (including a new head) and adding an extra metre to the sun deck.

After signing the refit agreement the yard started engineering the aft sections in order to have production well underway when the yacht arrived at the yard in January 2010. Over the next nine months MY Odyssey was completely transformed inside and out, ranging from a complete repaint of the hull and superstructure to an extensive refurbishment of all luxury interior areas.

The main deck aft of the motor yacht Odyssey was extended to include a new U-shaped seating arrangement, while a new tender crane was fitted on the lengthened bridge deck. All decks have been re-laid with teak and new cap rails adorn every deck. The ‘indoor’ changes are equally impressive, with new bathrooms in all suites, a new galley interior (including stainless steel furniture and equipment), a new interior for the extended bridge deck lounge, new provision freezers and refrigerators, new laundry interior and equipment and a wide-ranging refurbishment of all crew interior areas. Two new Caterpillar C6.6 100 kW generators have been fitted in the repainted engine room.

Illusion Yacht’s busy charter season after her refit at Pendennis

October 07, 2010

The 56m Feadship built motor yacht Illusion has completed her summer charter season following a substantial winter refit at the Pendennis shipyard. Between June and September her spectacular new profile could be seen during 5 separate trips cruising around the glorious islands and coastline of the Mediterranean, including the Balearics, France, Italy, Sardinia, Corsica and Barcelona.

Motor Yacht Illusion at sunset

The 3-level 5m l.o.a. extension Pendennis carried out over the winter enabled the addition of a new duel purpose beach club and tender garage. These improvements extended the outdoor social areas on the Illusion yacht and, alongside neutral elegant restyling throughout and a new Bannenberg & Rowell Design owner’s area, has dramatically enhanced the cruising experience.

Super Yacht Illusion

The client approached Pendennis about his vision for enhancing the Illusion Motoryacht early in 2009 and the work commenced in September 2009 with delivery in June 2010.  Although the refit programme was extensive the yacht was only out of commission during one winter cruising season. Detailed pre-planning alongside excellent working relationships with the client, captain, crew and naval architects, assisted in a quick and efficient re-delivery. This collaboration is ongoing as Pendennis works alongside the client to ensure the superyacht Illusion continues to perform and deliver the on-board lifestyle expected through their unique after-sales care and support programme.

Interior of the Pendennis refitted yacht Illusion

Toby Allies, Sales and Marketing Director for Pendennis commented: “Pendennis thoroughly enjoyed working alongside the Client and Captain during the course of the project. Close collaboration throughout ensured that ideas could be explored and decisions made efficiently without losing sight of the delivery schedule.”

Having all key trades in house was also a key factor in an efficient and swift programme of updates. Pendennis’ ability to maintain control over the complete project throughout all stages of the refit was a key benefit in using the yard for the MY Illusion project. Pendennis approached the project with a keenness to facilitate changes, incorporating client vision throughout, adopting a flexible approach to new design challenges or emerging works. The objective was to be responsive without affecting the successful and timely re-delivery of the yacht Illusion.

Extensive works done at the Pendennis shipyard on the super yacht Illusion

Throughout the project the Captain and crew were based in Falmouth and enjoyed the broad range of facilities offered by Pendennis, as well as the diverse and relaxed lifestyle that Cornwall has to offer.

Mike Conway, Captain of the super yacht Illusion, who has stayed in most of the major cruise destinations globally, thoroughly enjoyed his time in Falmouth: “The in-house crew facilities were impressive and Pendennis went out of their way to ensure we felt at home during our stay. We were genuinely surprised by the broad range of activities on offer in Cornwall as well as the ease of access to the rest of the country. Our time in Falmouth was fantastic regarding both the professional and the ‘can do’ attitude of the shipyard as well as having all the additional support services and events for the Illusion team to benefit from.”

October 05, 2010

For the occasion of the 20th Monaco Yacht Show, Bernard d’Alessandri, Secretary General of the Yacht Club de Monaco has awarded the first “La Belle Classe Environment” Prize to Massimo Perotti, President of Sanlorenzo for the Ameglia boatyard rehabilitation project.

Built in the Montemarcello Reserve near the Magra River, this new complex designed by the architect Stefano Boeri is one of the first “eco-responsible” boatyards. The yard has already attained ISO 14001 certification and will have plant fibre walls, phyto-filters and photovoltaic panels among other eco-friendly features.

Massimo Perotti of Sanlorenzo awarded first “La Belle Classe Innovation & Environment” Prize by Bernard d'Alessandri

Massimo Perotti of Sanlorenzo awarded first “La Belle Classe Innovation & Environment” Prize by Bernard d'Alessandri

“Sanlorenzo attention to the environment has always been very sensitive. Our Headquarter and the Ameglia Division are located inside a Natural Park and we are surrounded by natural beauties that we respect with the highest attention and this attitude helps us to build our motor yachts with the same attention and respect to the building process, to the workers and, generally speaking, to the environment. I am very glad that all these environmental efforts have been awarded with the “La Belle Classe” and recognized by such a prestigious organization as the Yacht Club de Monaco which has been showing since a long time high sensitivity to our planet.” said Massimo Perotti.

La Belle Classe is a label established by the Yacht Club de Monaco, at the instigation of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, President of the Yacht Club de Monaco, to unite all those involved in the Yachting sector.

Its aim is to promote technological innovation in the ongoing quest to improve boats; to safeguard the environment and the sea (by encouraging a responsible attitude, use of new or existing innovative techniques, etc); and to have respect for etiquette (crew and owner dress code, courtesy and solidarity rules among members of “La Belle Classe”).

With “La Belle Classe Superyachts”, the Yacht Club de Monaco wants to be in a position to welcome, assist and raise awareness among 40m-plus yacht owners of our maritime culture, and to encourage yachting professionals to adopt a philosophy which is respectful of the environment.
