BWA Yachting Switzerland introduces Yacht Carbon Offset option

May 07, 2010

BWA Yachting, worldwide leader in concierge and marine agency services to the superyacht industry, has introduced a new option for yachts who wish to offset their carbon footprint. Through preferred partners Yacht Carbon Offset, carbon emissions of the yacht’s engines can be balanced with equivalent greenhouse gas savings from independently audited projects around the world.

BWA Yachting and Yacht Carbon Offset both focus on meeting the particular demands of those that own and enjoy superyachts.  Reassurance that carbon emissions have been effectively balanced is a natural requirement for many such individuals.  Moreover, pragmatic action to deal with greenhouse gases is an important element of environmental management.

Stefano Tositti CEO of BWA Yachting said, “It makes perfect sense to provide carbon offsetting through our seamless and integrated yacht support system.  We have selected Yacht Carbon Offset as our preferred partner, recognising their focus on the requirements of superyacht clients, and their Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification.”

Yacht Carbon Offset’s Managing Director Mark Robinson commented, “An increasing number of leading yachts now carbon offset their fuel, either as standard procedure or for individual charters. We are always looking for ways to make this as convenient as possible. BWA Yachting are set up to provide comprehensive logistics and concierge support to captains and crews, and arranging the Carbon Offset can be a natural part of this. We are delighted to be partnering with the BWA team across their extensive network in the Mediterranean and beyond.”
About Yacht Carbon Offset

The full capabilities and flexibility of a luxury yacht enable owners and guests to enjoy the world’s most beautiful destinations.  With large and powerful yachts, a significant “carbon footprint” arises, so this can readily be addressed through a Yacht Carbon Offset.

It works as follows: Greenhouse gas emissions from the yacht are quantified based on the amount of fuel. Then an equivalent quantity of greenhouse gas savings, from independently verified green energy projects, is assigned to balance them out.  Yacht Carbon Offset provides a specialist service for those that own and enjoy the world’s leading superyachts, and has Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification.

Carbon Offsetting complements the initiatives taken by each yacht to improve energy efficiency, since it addresses the impact of the energy that is consumed after all such initiatives have taken effect.  In a world where service excellence requires full flexibility of operation, Carbon Offsetting is a practical way to make a real difference.

Entirely dedicated to the super yacht industry, BWA Yachting is uniquely able to offer an integrated service with seamless communications among offices, allowing clients to confidently rely upon an effective and efficient support system.

BWA Yachting, with Mediterranean headquarters located in Lugano, Switzerland, serves over 275 ports and marinas through BWA owned and operated offices worldwide. BWA Yachting in the Caribbean and USA, with headquarters in St. Maarten, offers full agency support to all types of vessels throughout the islands.

Imtech technology partners PlanetSolar

May 07, 2010

Imtech N.V. (technical services provider in Europe) announces that it is acting as technology partner of PlanetSolar, the largest ship powered by solar energy in the world. The ship is being officially exhibited today on the occasion of the 821st birthday of Hamburg’s harbour. In 2011, PlanetSolar will set sail on a world cruise of approximately 50,000 km, with the aim of promoting solar energy and the use of environmentally-conscious alternative fuel for sailing.

René van der Bruggen, CEO of Imtech: ‘Society is becoming increasingly sustainable and technology is playing a leading role in this process. The trend towards ‘green’ technical infrastructure, which started in the energy, buildings, and data centres markets, is now also obvious present in the maritime market. Being a technical services provider with the ability to integrate high-tech energy technology in our total portfolio (electrical solutions, ICT and mechanical solutions), our ‘green’ services package matches this social trend perfectly. Also we possess a large number of sustainable technical competencies. The order for PlanetSolar and several other maritime initiatives have resulted in Imtech becoming a ‘green frontrunner’ in the global maritime market.’

High-tech catamaran covered by solar panels.

PlanetSolar is a high-tech 85-ton, 31-metre long and 15-metre wide catamaran, which is covered by 537 m2 of solar panels. The futuristic-looking ship is powered by two 10 kW electric motors. On board it has the world’s largest lithium-ion battery, with a power storage capacity of 2910 Ah and a weight of 11 tons. In total, PlanetSolar can travel 1,000 km without sunlight. PlanetSolar has a top speed of 14 knots (25 km/h) and can house around 40 guests. It produces zero environmental pollution and the ship moves noiselessly. The Knierim Shipyard together with HDW constructed the ship in Kiel, Germany.

Energy promotion cruise around the world in 140 days

PlanetSolar is an initiative of Swiss national Raphaël Domjan, president and skipper of the ship. Jean Verne, the great-grandson of Jules Verne is one of the project’s ‘godfathers’. This is the first ship to undertake a cruise around the world powered entirely by solar energy. The 50,000 km journey is expected to take 140 days at an average speed of 8 knots (15 km/h). The planned route is via the Atlantic Ocean, through the Panama Canal, across the Pacific and Indian Oceans, and home via the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea. ‘Energy Consciousness Stops’ will be made amongst others in New York, San Francisco, Darwin, Hong Kong, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Marseilles.

Imtech: technology partner for ‘green’ technology

Imtech is acting as technology partner on PlanetSolar and is responsible for the project management, engineering, implementation and commissioning of the high-tech energy distribution system, the technology that provides for charging the lithium-ion battery, the alarm & monitoring system and the cable system. Imtech is a frontrunner in ‘green’ infrastructure for ships. For instance, Imtech has provided a large part of the ‘green’ technical infrastructure on board the ‘Rainbow Warrior III’, the new flagship of Greenpeace. In the USA, Imtech is involved in an ecological sightseeing boat powered by a combination of solar energy and sustainable electrical propulsion. Together with Feadship (designer and builder of luxury yachts) and MTU (builder of ships’ engines), Imtech is researching the possibilities of constructing ‘green’ luxury (mega) yachts. Recently Imtech has also developed a ‘smart battery concept’ for the long-term distribution of energy on board ships.

Veritais supply integrated Audio-Visual system to the new 46m Ron Holland Designed Pendennis ketch Superyacht Christopher

April 30, 2010

Yacht Christopher

Veritais, the integrated entertainment systems specialist for superyachts, has been appointed to specify, install and commission the high definition audiovisual system for the 46m ketch sailing yacht Christopher which was designed by Ron Holland Design and is currently in build at Pendennis Shipyard.

The system is to be built around a central computer that will provide the software and processing power for media distribution, and which in turn will interface with the yacht’s main data system to allow single point control. A Qnap NAS server with 6 terabytes of memory will store thousands of ordinary and high definition movies along with tens of thousands of music tracks for streaming to any location on board.

A total of ten televisions will be fitted, the largest a 46 inch set in the saloon and the smallest 10 inch screens installed above the crew bunks. The owner and guest areas will have full Bluray cinema systems along with access to satellite TV channels. Each zone will also have Apple TV – a digital media receiver designed to store and play digital content originated from iTunes – giving access to additional broadcast content, and each zone can be controlled either by a dedicated remote control or by using an iTouch or iPhone equipped with the necessary app.

Additional features being installed by Veritais include a party mode that transforms the saloon, main deck, owners’ deck and owners’ study into a single zone for music or other entertainment, and there will be a chartplotter interface to enable the owners, guests and captain to view navigation data on the screens in their respective cabins. Games consoles can also be connected as needed in the guest cabins, owners’ study and the crew mess for those who like their entertainment to be interactive.

The system will link into the superyacht Christopher’s closed circuit TV system for enhanced security and safety, and all the speakers throughout the yacht will be to Audiophile standard. The construction project is being managed by owner’s representative Palm Beach Yachts International and Christopher is due for completion at the end of this year.

Yacht CHRISTOPHER:

At the end of 2008 Pendennis announced the partnership with Ron Holland Design and Palm Beach Yachts International to build a new 46m performance cruising ketch. Construction is well on the way with delivery in late 2010. Three staterooms and a study will provide the owners and their guests with accommodation for up to 12, with a further four cabins forward sleeping eight crew. Launch and delivery to the owner is expected in 2010.

Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show applications flood in

April 29, 2010

Sunnseeker at the London International Boat Show

The Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show applications are flooding in ahead of the deadline.

The 2011 Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show is gaining momentum as applications for space flood in ahead of Friday’s (30 April) deadline.  With applications in from key exhibitors from across the industry demand for the show is very strong.

The launch of the new Phase II extension at the Eastern End of ExCeL has opened up a world of opportunity for the London show and NBS has taken this chance to develop and enhance the event to ensure it provides the best experience for visitors and the best possible sales platform for the industry.

Quotes from just a selection of those exhibitors who have already applied:

Tim Hart of E P Barrus said: “The developments are just what the show and we exhibitors need. Some may have considered not attending in future, but having seen the NBS presentation and what they are going to do with the show, we have applied – anyone would be crazy not to go back in 2011.”

Simon Clare, Princess Yachts International added: “The development plans presented to us by NBS have the wow factor which they acknowledge needs to come back to the show – it has certainly excited us and we look forward to playing an even bigger part in the 2011 show.”

The plans are also exciting current exhibitors to do more at the Show.

Paul Heyes, Key Yachting: “We took three boats to the 2010 show on the boardwalk and were pleased with the outcome.  But having now seen the plans and developments we are very excited and have applied for almost double the space.  The changes are exactly what the show needs and Key Yachting would like to play a big part in the show’s future.”

NBS is working to encourage exhibitors to take advantage of free space in order to entertain and engage with Show visitors. Jean-Francois Lair of Chantiers Beneteau, said: “We really like the ideas and developments that will be a big part of the 2011 show. The opportunity for exhibitors to take up to 20sqm at no charge in return for delivering a visitor feature on their stand is one that we are planning to get involved with by delivering a great educational and fun experience for visitors.”

As well as cementing the decision to attend for current exhibitors, the plans are also enticing lapsed exhibitors.

Brian May, Managing Director, Berthon Boat Company Ltd: “We are pleased with the developments NBS have put in place for the 2011 show having listened to visitors and exhibitors. This has galvanised Berthon into applying for space at the show, having not exhibited at the London show in 2010 – which was the first London show we missed in some fifty years!”

The Show’s new broad appeal will draw in new audiences, including those seeking to purchase second hand boats. Ian Atkins, Managing Director, Yachtworld.com: “While many consumers attend boat shows to see and possibly purchase new boats, the most common barrier to buying a new boat is to dispense with one’s current boat. Anything we can do to help sell used boats will, in turn, help sell new boats.  As for first time buyers, research indicates that less than 3% of them purchase new boats. Providing an efficient, attractive, and cost effective means of showing and selling used boats will help move the whole market forward. Yachtworld has applied for space again for 2011 and we look forward to being involved.”

The 2011 Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show takes place 7-16 January 2011 at ExCeL, London and is set to feature the most diverse and entertaining set of exhibitors in its established history.

With over 500 exhibitors displaying product from right across the marine industry it is the place to see and talk to people who can really help you get the most out of your passion.

Looking to 2011 the Show will benefit from a new extension that is being built at the venue. This 40% increase in space will mean that the Show has the potential to grow and include even more product areas to create the Ultimate Boat Show.
