Yachting Industry shows resilience at 2011 PSP Southampton Boat Show

September 26, 2011

One of Europe’s premier on-water boat shows, the 2011 PSP Southampton Boat Show, drew to a successful conclusion on Sunday 25 September 2011.  The PSP Southampton Boat Show reinforced its reputation as an exceptional showcase for the UK leisure marine industry with over 111,017 visitors (9% fewer than 2010) attended the Show over the 10 days, keen to experience activities on and off the water. Encouraging sales were also reported despite the tough economic conditions.

Both the British Marine Federation (BMF) and its subsidiary National Boat Shows (NBS) are delighted with the success of the Show, which has brought visitors to the stands of over 580 exhibitors. The Show has again provided an excellent platform for the British leisure marine industry to display its quality and diversity. Exhibitors chose Southampton to host over 11 world product and boat launches and numerous UK launches and European debuts announced on Public Preview Day.  The Show also hosted the Minister for Business, Mark Prisk who launched the UK Marine strategy and the BMF has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to help the industry particularly with bank finance and in developing a better Supply Chain process.  All this demonstrates the importance of this Show, the benefits it offers and the effectiveness of the strategies adopted by many companies in managing current economic conditions.

Visitor feedback has also been very positive, which reflects that the Show offers the ideal mix of products, features and activities available to all.  2011 has seen an array of brand new attractions including the Great British Oyster Festival in association with The Shellfish Association of Great Britain, Michelin star celebrity Chef Shaun Rankin demonstrating in the Sea Kitchen Theatre and the impressive HMS Bulwark which welcomed almost 8,000 visitors aboard, along with Show favourite’s Try-A-Dive and Try-A-Boat.

“The Show looks tremendous and the Show’s attractions coupled with all the many boats, products and services on display offer visitors a great day out.  The arrival of HMS Bulwark on Thursday has added some additional excitement and another reason to visit.  Through Try-a-Boat, Get Afloat, the Platinum Experience with Princess and Suzuki’s RIB experience almost 10,000 people have enjoyed getting out on the water to have a go themselves, which all helps to introduce people to boating,” said Murray Ellis, Managing Director of National Boat Shows.

“The new elements to the Show, as well as great Show highlights, have left 2011 on a high in a time of continuing and extremely challenging economic conditions. The atmosphere and dedication by all those involved is unparalleled and something to certainly be proud of.”

David Pougher, Chairman of National Boat Shows added: “Business has been done here at the PSP Southampton Boat Show with steady sales across the range of boats, equipment and services on display.  While many exhibitors may not have broken any records, visitors have certainly been buying at a level to what they can afford. The marine industry is experiencing the same challenges as many other industries within the current climate and by providing the best possible platform the Show has given marine companies a much needed boost.

“Following the success of this year’s PSP Southampton Boat Show, we look forward to working towards an even more impressive Show in London from 6-15 January. The positive feedback from visitors and exhibitors alike gives us the drive to ensure the 2012 Tullett Prebon London Boat Show is an unmissable event and an excellent showcase for the UK leisure marine industry.”

Exhibitor comments

All types of business have been done.   Show sponsor and international boat transportation firm, PSP, has reported its best Show yet after a whirlwind week at the PSP Southampton Boat Show, having done a roaring trade with a high number of enquiries and has completely filled its vessel bound for the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.  Frank Dixie, PSP: This has been a great Show for PSP – in fact I think it’s our best Show yet.  Fourteen members from PSP’s Global Alliance attended the Show from around the world, providing an invaluable opportunity to exchange news and discuss new developments.”

Marco Marine has had a fantastic PSP Southampton Boat Show selling over £1 million worth of yachts.  Managing Director, Richard Poulson: “We sold six Dufour 375’s and one Dufour 405 to Neilson Active Holidays for their 2012 Mediterranean flotillas.”

Sebago has announced a 27% increase in sales compared to last year (at time of print) and expects this figure to rise to 40% by the end of the day (Sunday).  Adie Callaghan, European Marketing Manager for Sebago: “This is our 25th consecutive year with Sebago at PSP Southampton Boat Show and we are delighted with the visitors and sales we’ve had this week.  Not only has it been a great brand-building exercise to raise awareness among new customers, but we’ve exceeded our expectations in terms of sales on both apparel and footwear.

“The PSP Southampton Boat Show has cemented its position as a prominent show in the international boating calendar.  Sebago continues to consider the event as one of its most important marketing platforms of the year launching here our new Triwater range for Spring 2012.”

Chris Jeckells, Managing Director, Jeckells the Sailmakers: “Whilst the weather has not been too kind, and footfall has been down as a consequence, Jeckells the Sailmakers has had a reasonably good show and we have found that the quality of visitors to our stand has in general been good. It is of particular notice that people are buying from Jeckells as we are an established company and all our sails are manufactured in the UK. Our order book to date is not far off last year’s, and still with two days to go.”

Lester Abbott, owner of Southerly: “The weather could have been better but the Show has been fantastic.  It’s been a record Show for us and we are very happy.”

Ralph Olingschlaeger, GN Espace: “Best Show ever.”

ABC Marine chose the Show to launch its new range of Smartliner fishing boats and it’s proved to be the ideal platform having five confirmed orders and numerous demonstrations arranged for their demo week following the Show.  Paul Johnson of ABC Marine: “The level of interest in the range has surprised even us and we were always expecting a good response.”

David Morris of Elan UK: “We had a great location outside the Holiday Inn for the 210, which is going down a storm.”

Mark Payne, Marine Eyewear Company: “2011 has been a great Show.  It has been very well advertised and promoted; I have seen it on TV many times.  The infrastructure and the people who run it are top class.”

Alewijnse showcases energy efficiency for superyachts at the Monaco yacht Show

September 25, 2011

Alewijnse Marine Systems, the leading superyacht systems integrator, is once again exhibiting at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show. Alewijnse is a global pioneer in the design and installation of the integrated electrical systems that form the heart of every superyacht. In an age where automation and the need for different systems to communicate and interact with each other are paramount, Alewijnse supplies its knowledge and expertise to yards all over the world.

Alewijnse showcases energy efficiency for superyachts at the Monaco yacht Show

At this year’s Monaco Yacht Show Alewijnse is showcasing its ability to design tailor-made electro-technical solutions for superyachts, covering everything from navigation and bridge systems to ICT and entertainment networks, along with the full transmission systems for power, lighting and control. However the company’s strengths extend beyond that with its proven track-record in the identification and adoption of the new technologies that meet the requirements of the most demanding superyacht owners. In this era of oil at over $110 a barrel and ever more stringent environmental regulation, this means working with owners and yards to create superyachts that use less fossil fuels, conserve and recycle what energy they do generate and create as few emissions as possible.

Over the past year Alewijnse has worked with many yards, designers and suppliers as an integral part of each project including leading names such as Amels, Oceanco and Royal Huisman. One notable example in 2011 is the role that the company is playing in a new Oceanco superyacht which will be built under the new PYC (Passenger Yacht Code); a new code for yachts carrying 13-36 passengers and no cargo.

The new code demands a greater level of sophistication in the electrical systems than is demanded on smaller yachts, not least for the fire and safety systems where the vessel has to be divided into several fire zones separated by watertight bulkheads. Alewijnse will also be specifying and installing a specialist public address system along with super-secured watertight cable penetrations.

Visitors to the Alewijnse stand (QD64) will find expert staff on hand to discuss the design, installation and integration of every kind of onboard electrical system. A Lantic Entertainment System will also be on show, running a range of content through mirror TVs especially developed and designed for superyachts. Lantic, which led the way in integrating smart phones into its control systems some years ago, now offers full control via the iPad, iPhone and iPod, as well as any other device capable of accessing a web browser. With full, two-way functionality a Lantic system can now both be accessed and controlled from anywhere onboard via a wireless network. Below is a short video of the new GUI and iPadcontrol  by Lantic Entertainment System.

Royal Imtech – Imtech receives the designation ‘Royal’

September 23, 2011

Imtech N.V. (IM-AE, technical services provider in Europe and on the global marine market) has announced that Her Royal Highness the Queen of the Netherlands has granted Imtech N.V. the right to use the designation ‘Royal’. This special Predicate is awarded today by Mr. Jan Franssen, Queen’s Commissioner in the Provence of South Holland, in the presence of Mr. Ahmed Aboutaleb, Mayor of Rotterdam. Royal Imtech is now a fact.

Imtech CEO René van der Bruggen: ‘Naturally, we are proud on the fact that we are allowed to call ourselves ‘Royal Imtech’. This forms the pinnacle of 150 years of entrepreneurship, and specifically of the tremendous growth in activities that we have experienced over the past two decades. We have grown from a Dutch company established over a century and a half ago into one of the strongest players in the technical services market in Europe, as well as occupying a top-five position in the global marine market. Our 27,000 employees work for over 21,000 customers. More than 25% of our revenue stems from intelligent, ‘green’ technology solutions in the European markets of buildings, industry, traffic & infra and the global marine market. Our revenue (turnover) totals over 4.5 billion euro and we have developed an ambitious growth strategy for 2015 that is aimed at generating revenue of 8 billion euro. The designation ‘Royal’ fits perfectly within this growth strategy. Royal Imtech symbolises the respect, appreciation and confidence of all our stakeholders: our customers, employees, investors, business partners and everyone we work with.’

What does the designation ‘Royal’ imply?

The designation ‘Royal’ is a distinction that can be granted to associations, foundations, institutions and major firms. The designation ‘Royal’ was conferred for the first time in 1806 by King Louis Napoleon on what was then known as the Staatsdrukkerij (State Printing House) and the Netherlands Navy.

To become eligible for the designation, a company needs to be at least 100 years old, to be distinguished in terms of its nature, size and reliability, and to occupy a dominant or highly prominent position in the Netherlands in its sector – and preferably be of international stature. The size of the company, the size of its workforce and its revenue are all taken into account. Its operational management needs to be beyond reproach. The company, its board members and members of its supervisory board need to be of high repute and irreproachable conduct. The Queen herself is the only formal institute authorised to confer the designation. The designation is strictly limited to the organisation in question, entitling it to add the Predicate ‘Royal’ to its name and include the Royal Crown in its logo. Generally speaking, the Queen confers this designation on only one organisation in each sector.

Rich company history, with a ‘starring role’ for technology

Last year, Imtech celebrated its 150th anniversary. In 2010, it was exactly 150 years ago that Jan Jacob van Rietschoten put his career as sea captain in the long-haul shipping trade behind him and started working as an independent stevedore in Rotterdam in 1860. He was one of the first people in Europe to use steam power for loading and unloading ships. This formed the start of Van Rietschoten & Houwens, and this, in turn, formed the basis of Imtech today. It also marks the start of Imtech’s rich company history, with a ‘starring role’ for technology. From the first electric railway (1888), the first basic automation on board ships (1930), the invention of energy-saving cogeneration technology (combined heat-power solutions) coupling and decentralised power plants (1935), through to present-day 2011 with ‘green’ buildings, data centres, ships and high-tech power plants.

From 7,000 to 27,000 employees

In 1967, Van Rietschoten & Houwens was acquired by Internatio. Internatio (established in 1863) and Müller (established in 1878) played a decisive role in the birth of Imtech. In 1970 they decided to merge, becoming Internatio-Müller N.V. The following period was characterised by a series of acquisitions. Around 1990 Internatio-Müller (IM) was a conglomerate of more than 100 companies, of which about 35 were specialists in technology, including Van Rietschoten & Houwens. In 1993, these technical companies were grouped together to form Internatio-Müller Techniek, or Imtech. In 2000 Internatio-Müller decided to dispose of the non-technological activities and to concentrate fully on a single core activity: technology. Internatio-Müller became Imtech in 2001, introducing an ambitious new company that was quoted on the Euronext stock exchange in Amsterdam.

Imtech today

Imtech has grown from 7,000 employees (and revenue of 350 million euro) in 1993 to a workforce of 27,000 (and revenue of over 4.5 billion euro) today. This makes Imtech one of the largest companies in the Netherlands. Imtech is currently characterised by strong market positions in North-western Europe and in the global marine market. Imtech offers a comprehensive range of technical services to over 21,000 customers. Imtech is a leading company in the field of ‘green’ technology, with over 25% of its total revenue relating to sustainable technology solutions.

The designation ‘Royal’ to be presented in Rotterdam

The conferral of the designation ‘Royal’ will be celebrated in the Imtech Marine workshop on Sluisjesdijk in Rotterdam. In Rotterdam Imtech has also its official registered office. With over 1,500 employees, Imtech is one of the largest employers in Rotterdam. Our motive for choosing Rotterdam as the location for this presentation is that we wish to emphasise Imtech’s typically Rotterdam approach of ‘rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in’. Moreover, Rotterdam is where 150 years ago it all started for Imtech, in the marine market. Thus, Rotterdam is the ideal location for the ceremony to take place.

See onboard yachts Via Smartphone or PC With The New GOST™ Watch HD System

The GOST Watch HD System can remotely monitor and record all activities on board a yacht from any computer or Smartphone, anywhere in the world. Watch live video of your yacht as it leaves the harbor or view activities in the salon, staterooms or engine room from any pc or mobile phone with internet access. Cameras can be set to record clips to the website based on motion detection and sent via email or text message to your computer or mobile phone.

The new GOST Watch HD’s IVR (Internet Video Recorder) is similar to a traditional DVR with the added advantage of being accessible either locally or remotely via the internet. The 250GB version features looped recording of up to 6 cameras for up to 30 days (24/7/30). The 1 Terabyte version features looped recording of up to 6 cameras for up to 3 months (24/7/90). Both versions feature simultaneous viewing, either locally or remotely over the internet, of full motion live or recorded video from up to 6 cameras. Archived clips can be downloaded to a PC and burned onto DVD’s.

Both IVR’s utilize an advanced MPEG4 compression whereby the more activity you have in front of the camera being recorded, the more storage space it utilizes. When landscapes in view of the camera have little activity, the IVR may have storage capacity for more then 30 days or 3 months respectively. In very high activity applications, such as cameras looking out at a busy marina with constant shimmering water, dock activity and moving boats in view, the recording time may be diminished.

GOST Watch HD can be used as a stand alone surveillance system or as part of the GOST Insight HD System. A variety of cameras are available from GOST or the system can be an easy add-on to existing analog or thermal cameras on board.

Silverlining new superyacht furniture collection preview at Monaco Yacht Show

September 21, 2011

Silverlining is previewing a collection of furniture pieces for superyachts at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show. Silverlining furniture pieces show a radical departure from traditional preconceptions of what the luxury furniture on yachts should look like (think high gloss ebony). The superyacht collection explores the relationship between design and craftsmanship in the 21st century, pushing the boundaries of engineering and furniture making and placing the experiences of a modern person at the centre of design.

After the official launch at the Monaco Yacht Show, the collection will be exhibited in London during the Frieze week in October. The collection consists of six pieces and includes tables, cabinets, seating and a desk.

Silverlining approached four well respected superyacht designers in 2009 including Bannenberg & Rowell Design, Eidsgaard Design, Michael Leach Design and Remi Tessier. The idea was to explore the future of yacht interiors together.

Mark Boddington, Silverlining’s founder and director commented “We wanted to inspire the superyacht world and explore where the future of interiors is heading, and we wanted to lead that change.”

Silverlining’s progressive collaborations is already be realized onboard megayacht Palladium and superyacht Pacific, with further projects both on superyachts and on land currently  in development in the Silverlining workshops. Innovation is one of the company’s core values and the team is constantly developing new ideas, putting the modern superyacht owner at the center of design.

After 14 years exhibiting at the Monaco Yacht Show Silverlining is relocating to the Darse Nord air-conditioned tent at a new large stand QD3 next to the builders’ gallery.

The 2011 Monaco Yacht Show takes place from 21st-25th September at Port Hercules – Boulevard Albert 1er – Principality of Monaco
