CRN & Riva with Christian Jankowski at Frieze Art Fair London

October 13, 2011

Two luxury yachting brands of the Ferretti Group, CRN Yachts and Riva, will play a central role in an installation by Berlin-based artist Christian Jankowski, at this year’s Frieze Art Fair 2011 which runs from the 13 – 16 October 2011. The Finest Art on Water, curated by Sarah McCrory, will be part of Frieze Projects, a series of special commissions which offer viewpoints that will elicit a shift in the viewer’s perception as they move through the fair.

Christian Jankowski has collaborated with luxury yacht builder CRN, featuring the project of a 68 metre superyacht, whose exteriors and interiors lines are designed by Officina Italiana Design, and will be produced by the shipyard in the contemporary artwork. The Aquariva Cento, a limited edition boat, also designed by Officina Italiana Design, that is available as a tender for CRN superyachts and embodies the modern Riva style and elegance, will be sculpturally displayed as part of the installation, simultaneously challenging an art audience and yacht lovers.

Jankowski aims to engage directly with the idea of sales and exchange and the value of luxury goods. The Finest Art on Water is not only a yacht but also an art work; an exclusive, ready-made art piece that implicates, involves and engages the spectator.

Visitors to the installation will play the part of prospective buyers, as they view the interior and listen to the description of the boat. Jankowski’s work encompasses film, video and performance in which, consciously or subconsciously, viewers become active participants.

“Frieze has become one of the most influential events in the art world and it is exciting that CRN and Riva will have a presence there to engage with people in this unique way. Our yachts combine cutting edge technology with stunning designs, premium materials and the finest craftsmanship. This project with Christian Jankowski allows us to work in an environment which transcends a yacht from an object to a piece of art,” comments Luca Boldrini, CRN Brand Manager.

CRN specializes in the construction of fully customised mega yachts in steel and aluminium from 44 to 85 metres and has recently launched a revolutionary range of custom Dislpoen line of superyachts, combining the aesthetics of open boats with the comfort of displacement vessels.

The Aquariva Cento motor yacht, designed by Officina Italiana Design

The Aquariva Cento motor yacht, designed by Officina Italiana Design

The Aquariva Cento, designed by Officina Italiana Design, which will be displayed sculpturally at Frieze, is the ultimate in elegance and luxury and was commissioned as a special edition to celebrate the hundredth unit of the original Aquariva. The soft, elegant lines of the 33 foot Aquariva Cento exude tradition, whilst still managing to be highly innovative. The valuable, skilfully carpentered woods of the deck are mahogany with maple inlay and the innovative, electronically-controlled, two speed gearbox brings out all the passion and power of the two 380 horsepower Yanmar engines, resulting in an exceptional performance.

Founded in 1842 in Sarnico, Riva is the oldest shipyard in the world never to have interrupted production and is protected by the Italian Fine Arts Society. The original quality and artisan care have been maintained over the years, to which innovation, elegance, style and design have been added.

The history of CRN is a story full of successes, which have been accumulating right from the beginning. Set up by Sanzio Nicolini in 1963, the shipyard immediately established itself in a market which targeted a very selected clientele. This has been the guiding principle behind CRN right from the outset and has earned it a position among the top world builders of luxury mega yachts in association with important designers who helped establish the brand internationally.

Riva and CRN have a strong history of working together, dating back more than 40 years. Now the two brands have a collaboration to produce a new line of megayachts measuring more than 50 metres.

Frieze Art Fair: 13 – 16 October 2011

Frieze Art Fair takes place every October in Regent’s Park, London. The fair showcases new and established artists to an international audience.

Christian Jankowski
The work of Christian Jankowski is a performance, which engages often unsuspecting collaborators to innocently collude with him, making them ‘co-authors’ of the final result, who often (sometimes inadvertently) participate in the very conceptualisation of the work. The collaborative nature of Jankowski’s practice is paramount, as each participant unwittingly contributes his or her own texture. With Jankowski, there is as much emphasis on the journey as the destination, and the risks and chances inherent in his collaborations ultimately give surprising shape to the final works. The product of a generation that grew up with the ubiquity of film and television, its inherently populist influence is evident throughout Jankowski’s work. Christian Jankowski lives and works in Berlin and is represented by the Lisson Gallery London.

Centek to Launch Genset Pollution Control Guide at IBEX 2011

October 12, 2011

Marine wet exhaust systems manufacturer Centek Industries will introduce the Genset Pollution Control Guide at the 2011 International Boatbuilders Exhibition and Conference (IBEX), October 17-19 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville (booth 719).

Centek to Launch Genset Pollution Control Guide at IBEX 2011

Centek to Launch Genset Pollution Control Guide at IBEX 2011

The guide is designed to help boat builders and service yards integrate the company’s Gen-Kleen™ filter system with a generator wet exhaust system to remove hydrocarbon pollution (sheen, soot, unspent gasoline and diesel fuel) from the exhaust cooling water before it is discharged.

Available for marine gensets from 5 kw and up, a Gen-Kleen system separates raw cooling water from exhaust gases. The dry exhaust gases are vented to the atmosphere, the raw cooling water is scrubbed by a filtration system. The filters are impregnated with a patented formula that binds and captures hydrocarbons while allowing clean water to pass through. Clean water is then returned to the environment.

Built to withstand the harsh marine environment, Gen-Kleen systems are available in two models to accommodate different engine room layouts. The Compact Gen-Kleen integrates many of the system components into a single package. The Component Gen-Kleen disperses the components throughout the engine compartment as space allows.

Over 100 Gen-Kleen systems have been installed on boats and yachts worldwide. Centek has also designed and built more than 14,000 custom marine exhaust systems and is the only company to offer fiberglass exhaust components that are Lloyd’s Register Type approved, ABS type approved and meet or exceed ABYC-P1 standards. Centek’s engineering staff has more than 80 years of marine wet exhaust system design and innovation experience.

Palm Unbreakable will be featuring its glow-in-the-dark drink ware – which has proven to be a big hit with the marine cruising.

AIMEX CEO MaryAnne Edwards says “The continued support of Australian companies for IBEX reinforces the opportunities within the US market despite the recent economic crisis. There is still a real need to maintain a profile in this key market. With the dollar having dropped in recent weeks this will be a positive for the Australian companies showcasing their products at this show.  IBEX attracts significant numbers of US boat builders and has traditionally been a very fruitful show for Australian companies.”

It is understood that the size of the show has increased this year another good sign for the industry.

IBEX will be held in Louisville, Kentucky 17-19 October followed by the Fort Lauderdale 27-31 Oct.

The Australia Superyacht and marine export Industry will also be well represented at this show.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The Australian companies attending IBEX 2011 are:

Stress Free Marine has produced the NG Series Stress Free is a compact electric drum-style anchor winch used to raise, lower and secure anchors from the helm at the touch of a button. The patented design allows the anchor to be lowered under powered control at 90 fpm or to freefall without risk of over run or tangles at up to 600 fpm which means in 60 feet of water the anchor is on the bottom in 6 seconds. The built in actuating mechanism disengages the drum off the drive system and acts as a brake to prevent the spool from over run by continuously applying an even load at both ends of the drum. Once the free fall actuator is switched to OFF the robust drive is automatically re-engaged, locking the mechanism so that additional tying off is not necessary. Using an NG Series Stress Free makes anchoring a breeze.

Coursemaster Autopilots Pty Ltd in Sydney has been designing, manufacturing and exporting quality marine autopilots for 30 years. Commercial and leisure boat skippers around the world acknowledge the superior performance, toughness and reliability of Coursemaster Autopilots whether for a fishing, charter, tug, power or sailing vessel from five to 100 metres.

Palm Product’s commitment to quality and the environment is demonstrated with certification to ISO9001, the Automotive Standard TS16949, and Environmental Standard ISO14001.

New Besenzoni transom door for superyachts

October 11, 2011

Besenzoni has designed a manual transom door for superyachts that they have introduced at the 2011 Genoa Boat Show.  The new Besenzoni transom door features their trademark minimalist styling and is comprised of a series of self-supporting, frameless windows. The windows are held in place by an upper stainless steel AISI 316 strip, which is corrosion resistant, and a lower sliding track. The door also sports a ‘soft lock’ system that helps the windows to a close, cushioning any sharp blows, minimising damage-inducing impacts that could stress the structure.

Privacy is assured by mirrored glass that allows those inside to see out, without the possibility of people on the outside to see in. LED lights can also be installed to preserve the mirror effect in darkness.

The manually sliding panels of the transom door by Besenzoni offers an intelligent solution to optimise space, with the sliding tracks as streamlined as possible requiring a 10cm-wide track for 3 ffglass panels. To improve the installation process on new builds and refits Besenzoni has also designed a counter-frame.

A short history of the Barcelona Boat Show on its 50th anniversary

October 10, 2011

1963 Barcelona Boat Show

1963 Barcelona Boat Show

The first edition of the Barcelona Boat Show was set up in June 1963, by a group of personalities who are linked to sports and the nautical industry, with Juan Antonio Samaranch at the forefront along with the support of Fira de Barcelona. The event, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, has had a long and successful run and is, today, the sector’s biggest commercial platform in Spain, its main meeting point and an international leader.

The Barcelona Boat Show is created in 1963 with the aim of boosting the sports and recreational nautical industry and promoting nautical sports. At the time, there are only a few specialised companies and marinas and an absolute lack of knowledge among the Spanish population about the possibilities of navigation. Nonetheless, thanks to the enthusiasm and drive of a group of people passionate about boating and the few professionals that existed at the time, the show manages to open its doors successfully with the participation of 150 exhibiting companies in hall 1 of Fira de Barcelona’s Montjuïc exhibition centre.

After the success of the first edition, which took place within the framework of the very popular Feria de Muestras, it was agreed that the show would be an annual monographic event. In 1965, in the international category, it starts to exercise its role as a voice for the concerns of the sector, a function it has maintained until today.

1966 Barcelona Boat Show

1966 Barcelona Boat Show

Only two years later, in 1967, the nautical industry’s first major boom takes place: new ports are opened, boats are built with their own design or under licence from foreign shipyards, boats can be seen in the sea, wood starts to give way too fibre glass and ranges grow considerably. In line with this development, the show sees a significant increase in exhibitors in 1969 and its organising committee prioritizes the growth of young people’s enthusiasm for the sea -the appearance of the Optimist in ’68 being crucial to this.

The sector undertakes actions to raise the government’s awareness of the importance of carrying out reforms on registration procedures and taxation, with the aim of boosting an industry and trade that are forecast to grow and generate wealth and jobs for the country. The same year, the Law of Marinas is enacted; this is a basic toll for the expansion of the nautical industry in Spain and is considered to be one the Boat Show’s most important contributions to the sector.

The 70s: the boom of tourism and nautical sports

The sector becomes more and more professional and, in the 70s, there is a notable increase in enthusiasts, although the figures show a big gap between Spain and other countries. For example, while in Spain the ratio is one boat for each 1,500 inhabitants, in Italy it is one per 192 and, in Scandinavian countries, it is one per 62. In any case, the government gives signs of its interest in the sector and the show; and in 1973, it grants it the golden plaque for tourist merit, aware of the importance of nautical tourism in Spain.

The show also continues to reinforce its sports aspect as a complement to its commercial side. Boat Show Trophy Races are organised and awards are given to the best sportspersons of the year, such as the Spanish Optimist team, which become World Champions in the races held in Sweden.

1976 Barcelona Boat Show

1976 Barcelona Boat Show

Ecology starts to make an appearance with the exhibition of the Dephins, the first electric engines. In 1976, the event receives the name of “International Boat and Sports Show” and opens up to the camping and caravanning sector.  Samaranch, who has been president of the show since its beginnings, leaves the post in 1978, having been appointed Spain’s ambassador in the Soviet Union and Outer Mongolia. He is replaced by Jacinto Ballesté, also member of the founding team. In 1979, the Asociación Española de Puertos Deportivos y Turismo is founded and its secretariat is installed in the Boat Show with Jorge Salvat at the helm. This represents one further step in the sector’s development.

The 80s: the popularisation of nautical activities

The 80s bring many changes and innovations: the foundations to make the show more international are laid, it is split into sectors and the dates are brought forward in order to allow shipyards to programme their purchases and production. These changes are positive for the event, which sees the number of exhibitors and exhibition floor space grow, up to the middle of this decade. New nautical sports, such as windsurfing, take off and the first solar panels to be installed on board are exhibited. Boat charters and hire start to have a place in the show, with proposals to attract a public eager to navigate but unable to afford a boat of their own.

The number of new products presented by exhibitors also increases. Electronic equipment becomes smaller and cheaper and bow propellers for medium-length boats are introduced, making it easier to dock and cast off.

1985 Barcelona Boat Show

1985 Barcelona Boat Show

Activities to bring the public into contact with the nautical world increase, with navigation courses, steering with a tow, submarine photograph contests, navigational simulators, announcement of races, etc. Associations, federations, and institutions hold more and more assemblies, juntas and meetings within the setting of the show. In short, the show, which receives the Creu de Sant Jordi (Saint Georges’ Cross) from the Generalitat de Catalunya in 1988, is confirmed as the sector’s meeting point.

The 90s: the first on-water show

The 90s start with optimism. In 1992, the Barcelona Olympic Games are held, which represents a turning point for tourism, including the nautical industry: charter companies are consolidated and new marinas are built.

The number of motor boats at the show increases, especially large units and fisher-cruisers, as do new products presented by exhibitors; new materials, such as the composite, the latest design and equipment proposals and the latest technological advances, above all in the field of electronics, are exhibited. The concepts of sustainability and ecology take hold in the nautical world, even in recreational fishing.

The show is also consolidated as the meeting point for the sector, which is more and more professionalized, taking its concerns to the administration via the new associations that continue to arise. It also becomes a setting for the announcement of important races.

1996 Barcelona Boat Show

1996 Barcelona Boat Show

Nonetheless, during this decade, the show’s main new feature is its arrival at the sea. As an addition to the Montjuïc exhibition centre, in 1995, Port Vell is set up for the first time to provide the setting for the On-Water Show with larger national and international boats. The same year, Jordi Montserrat takes over from Miguel Rafart as director of the show. In 1998, Fira de Barcelona’s Administrative Board appoints Jorge Salvat as President Emeritus, after having been the show’s president for 19 editions. He is replaced by the well-known impresario Enrique Puig.

A new century: the number of nautical enthusiasts grows

Enthusiasm for nautical activities multiplies and the show begins to develop in spectacular fashion. One of the highlights occurs in 2002, coinciding with the disappearance of the peseta and the introduction of the euro: the event moves to the new, modern Gran Via exhibition centre, maintaining the On-Water Show in Port Vell. In response to sector demands, the dates are also changed to the first week in November, in order to give continuity and avoid coinciding with other international shows.

Between 2002 and 2007, the Boat Show continues to grow, boosting the leisure activities and nautical sports sectors and showcasing national and world premiers. It is also the venue for meetings of international organisations with the presence of personalities related to the nautical industry from around the world, such as the International Sailing Federation (2003). New organisations are created within the show’s framework, such as the Asociación Española de Clubes Náuticos and the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas, ANEN (2006). In 2007, Jordi Freixas is appointed new director of the show to replace Jordi Montserrat.

2006 Barcelona Boat Show

2006 Barcelona Boat Show

After years of optimism, the sector begins to show signs of recession in 2008, which leads to concern that a world scale economic crisis is on the horizon. That year, Enrique Puig, the show’s president, passes away and, for that edition, the president emeritus, Jorge Salvat, steps in. In 2009, Luis Conde is appointed the new president.

From that year, the effects of the crisis are heightened. Until now, the show has been carrying out actions to support companies, reinforcing its role as the main platform for energising trade and the sector’s main setting, from which to express its needs and look for solutions to tackle the difficult economic situation.

Despite the recession, nautical companies have stood out for their efforts and commitment to technological innovation with the development of new, safer, sustainable and environmentally-friendly products. At the same time, lovers of the sea, who continue to grow in numbers, are looking for new formulas via which to enjoy the sea, and interest in charter and shared property is growing.

Tognum to present its new MTU Series 2000 marine engine at the Genoa Boat Show

September 30, 2011

Tognum will be showcasing its latest MTU Series 2000 marine engine at “Salone Nautico Internazionale” – the Genoa Boat Show, which will start tomorrow the 1st October and will be held through to 9th October (Pavillon C, booth T30). Also featuring at the show will be MTU’s automation and service solutions for the yacht sector.

MTU 16V 2000 M94 yacht engine with a power output up to 1940 kW

MTU 16V 2000 M94 yacht engine with a power output up to 1940 kW

The Series 2000 M94 marine engine boasts the highest performance values in its class and an improved power-to-weight ratio. An increase of up to 8 percent in power output has been achieved over the previous model. Available in 8, 10, 12 and 16-cylinder versions, the engine covers the 930 to 1,940 kW (1,250 to 2,600 bhp) range at 2,450 rpm.

With respect to fuel consumption at cruising speed and generation of higher charge pressures at lower rpms, turbocharger performance has been enhanced – key to shortening acceleration time on seagoing vessels. On top of that, the unit meets all emissions standards applying to marine engines worldwide and comes automatically equipped with a

SOLAS (Safety of Life At Sea) certificate. To ensure that the surface temperature of the engine never exceeds 220 °C, the M94 also features double-walled fuel lines and triple-walled, water-cooled turbocharger and exhaust gas lines. That helps keep the temperature in the engine room relatively low, which in turn enhances comfort and safety. The M94 is also an exceptionally quiet engine, boasting extremely low sound pressure levels when idle or at low speeds.

Also featuring in MTU’s tradeshow presentation is “Smartline” and “Blueline” – the standard ship automation systems for monitoring and control of MTU’s Series 2000 and 4000 propulsion systems. The system is suitable for different propulsion configurations such as fixed pitch propeller (FPP) or water jets.

Not only its engines, but also its service makes MTU a partner that the customer can count upon. The MTU ValueCare package includes a longer warranty (EPC: Extended Propulsion Coverage). Other service offerings include tailor-made maintenance agreements, remote services and swift, reliable supply of high-quality, genuine MTU-brand spares.

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announces the introduction of state-of-the-art Joystick and Pod solutions for marine propulsion for pleasure craft. Cat dealers will now offer integrated propulsion and maneuvering solutions for customers in addition to the legendary Cat® marine engines. The Cat Joystick and Pod systems will feature proprietary Twin Disc QuickShift® transmission technology.  The Cat dealer network will provide its unrivalled support for these products around the World.

“We spend a lot of time listening to our customers so when they began requesting complete systems solutions from Caterpillar, we went straight to work,” said Richard Case, Caterpillar’s Vice President for Marine and Petroleum Power. “Matching Caterpillar’s superior power systems with the Cat dealer network’s unequalled global product support capabilities enables us to serve as a unique single-source provider of pleasure craft propulsion and maneuvering system needs across a wide power range. We look forward to providing the marine market with Cat propulsion systems.”

The Joystick solution features cutting-edge technology designed to integrate vessel components including the engines, transmissions, thrusters and propellers into a single source of control. Vessels featuring the customizable Cat Joystick system will benefit from a greater ease of maneuverability and docking as well as more responsive vessel steering at low speeds.  The Cat Joystick solution will be available as a complete packaged solution through the Cat dealer network. The package will be available to order in 2012.

All Pods offered by Caterpillar will incorporate the maneuverability elements of the Joystick system. Engineered to be integrated with Cat marine engines, the Cat Pod system incorporates yacht owner and builder requested features, such as improved fuel economy, reduced noise and vibration, optimized operating costs and “plug and play” installation. Yacht builders will also benefit from the Cat Pod system as installation costs and time will dramatically decrease. Beginning in 2014, the Pod will be offered for Cat marine pleasure craft engines operating below 1,000 mhp.

“The unique aspect of the solutions we are developing for pleasure craft applications is the ability to leverage Twin Disc technology with the renowned Cat power and performance. We are proud to collaborate with a true innovative, industry leader and look forward to capitalizing on the combined strengths of Twin Disc and Caterpillar,” noted Nigel Parkinson, Caterpillar Marine Power Systems Managing Director. “We are introducing the Pod and Joystick solutions with both yacht owners’ and builders’ needs in mind. Our goal is to provide a superior experience for both and these new solutions will undoubtedly help us to continue to meet these goals.”

Customers will be able to order the Joystick and Pod solutions from the global Cat dealer distribution network. Cat dealers will also provide stellar product support and service on both systems after the sale.
