Wärtsilä has acquired Cedervall, one of the leading manufacturers of shaft seal and bearing systems for the marine industry. Cedervall is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, and the company has subsidiaries in Spain, China and Singapore, with manufacturing facilities in Sweden, China and Spain.

This acquisition strengthens Wärtsilä’s leading position in the global marine services market, in line with its strategy. The combination of Wärtsilä’s and Cedervall’s businesses will create the market leader for oil and water lubricated seals and bearings, as well as for sterntubes.

Cedervall enjoys a strong reputation in the global marine market. The company’s key products are sterntube and bulkhead seals, sterntubes and sterntube bearings, intermediate shaft bearings, and propulsion rudders and nozzles. In 2010, the company’s annual net sales were SEK 344 million (EUR 39 million) and its profitability was on a good level. The company employs 211 people. Its manufacturing facilities are located in Gothenburg, Sweden, in Zhangjiagang, China, and in Vigo and Porrino, Spain.

“Cedervall’s oil and water lubricated seals and bearings, and sterntubes optimally complete the range of products and services in Wärtsilä’s seals and bearings portfolio. Furthermore, Cedervall’s excellent know-how and expertise will further enhance our competitiveness. Now having all products in the propulsion line in-house, this acquisition strengthens our total propulsion solutions”, says Christoph Vitzthum, Group Vice President, Wärtsilä Services.

Cedervall will be integrated into Wärtsilä Corporation. All employees will continue as Wärtsilä employees after the acquisition, including the current owners Anders Lundgren and Henric Lundgren. The value of the transaction is not published.

“For Cedervall, this deal offers an outstanding opportunity to develop and grow the business, in a way that meets the needs of global customers. We could have continued alone, but being a part of Wärtsilä, the leading equipment and after sales services provider with a truly global presence, has clear benefits”, says Anders Lundgren, Managing Director, Cedervall.

The acquisition is subject to relevant regulatory approvals, which are expected during the third quarter of 2011.

ECOsuperyacht – European distributor for GO2 diesel fuel combustion catalyst

July 15, 2011

ECOsuperyacht, a specialist in energy efficiency and emissions management for superyachts, has teamed up with Cerion Energy to become the European distributor for the innovative, highly effective diesel fuel combustion catalyst called GO2.

GO2 is a nano-particle based combustion catalyst that reduces fuel consumption by 8% to 13% while dramatically reducing harmful emissions and soot. GO2 nano-particles act as an oxygen courier, by contributing and redistributing oxygen in the engine chamber during combustion, GO2 also accelerates the rate of combustion due to the nano-particles catalytic properties. In doing this, a faster, more powerful, and more complete burn occurs which requires less fuel for the same output by the engine.

GO2 has been successfully tested for thousands of hours in a variety of applications. It is already used in the commercial marine and railroad industries in the United States. ECOsuperyacht, who will import and distribute G02 throughout Europe, is selling it to the yachting sector for the first time.

Richard Franklin, Managing Director of ECOsuperyacht states “with high fuel prices and a global push for more environmentally friendly marine practices, yacht owners and managers are searching for ways to reduce their fuel bills and cut their yacht’s carbon footprint whilst extending their yacht’s range and avoiding soot problems. With GO2, we see a product that can accomplish all of these goals. We shall be recommending G02 to all our clients”.

Bruce Brown, Vice President of Yachting Business Development for Cerion further states, “ECOsuperyacht has demonstrated that they have strong relationships with the European yachting community. These connections coupled with their influence and knowledge of green solutions for yachts makes them an ideal partner for Cerion Energy. Our product is currently used in the commercial marine sector in the U.S. Based on our research the private yachting sector was the natural next step for our product. The owners, engineers and captains we’ve talked to have all stated that emissions are of high concern to them, along with rising fuel costs. G02 addresses both of these concerns.”

SELEX Elsag to unveil Cyber Security for superyachts at Monaco Yacht Show

July 13, 2011

The Yacht Technologies business of SELEX Elsag, a Finmeccanica company and one of the world’s leading providers of navigation, communication, security and entertainment solutions for superyachts, will be officially unveiling its Cyber Security Operations Centre (SOC) for superyacht customers at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, 21 – 24 September.

SELEX Elsag to unveil Cyber Security for superyachts at Monaco Yacht Show

The Cyber SOC, which is operated by SELEX Elsag, will for the first time enable superyacht owners to benefit from a fully integrated and end-to-end cyber security service from a single partner.

With more than 250 million new cyber security threats emerging in 2010, this opportunity comes at a critical time for the superyacht sector. Many owners are placing themselves at personal and professional risk through inadequate secure protection across the whole of their onboard network.

“Cyber security threats can affect networks anywhere in the world, regardless of whether you are on land or at sea.  Worryingly, they can take a variety of forms. This means no network onboard a yacht is immune from criminal hacking, not even the navigation system itself”, John Hodder, Head of SELEX Elsag Yacht Technologies comments. “Yacht Technologies’ integrated system solutions are unique. They offer a highly robust infrastructure designed and maintained to be resilient against cyber security threats. Not only do these system solutions include the design and configuration of security into the entire onboard network from day one but now, thanks to the Cyber SOC, they also include a range of uniquely embedded cyber security services”.

The Cyber SOC will provide a range of benefits for superyacht owners and operators, including:

•A 24-hour global remote monitoring service to defend against cyber security threats and proactively address security issues before they become damaging

•Continuous analysis of network traffic and system and user behaviours to ensure that anomalies arising from implanted threats or inappropriate behaviour by authorised users are detected, identified, assessed and responded to in a timely and appropriate manner.

John Hodder concludes: “Yacht Technologies will provide the superyacht industry the same level of security and resilience as required by Government departments, commercial enterprises and critical national infrastructure providers. This will be supplied through the provision and management of secure system solutions for navigation, communications and entertainment operations.”

Yacht Technologies will be unveiling full details of its new and uniquely embedded cyber security solutions, along with the market-leading capabilities of the Cyber SOC, on its stand in the Darse Sud tent (Number: QS8O) on the first day of the Monaco Yacht Show, 21st September 2011.

Moonen Yachts choose Stabilis Electra by CMC Marine

July 11, 2011

The Stabilis Electra, the revolutionary system stabilizer fins with electrical actuator – studied, developed and patented by CMC Marine, is confirmed as a product of great interest to the recreational boating and luxury yacht market. In fact, since the first system installation in June 2010 on a San Lorenzo 82 motor yacht, a remarkable 20 systems have been ordered from superyacht shipyards. The twentieth system was signed by the Dutch shipyard Moonen for the new Moonen 82 Alu motor yacht.

After Sanlorenzo, Benetti, Dominator, and Cantiere delle Marche, the well-known Dutch shipyard Moonen has also chosen the Stabilis Electra. The selected stabilization system for the 25m aluminum yacht 82’ Alu, Moonen is building at its Hertogenbosch yard, in the Netherlands, is the Stabilis Electra with 1.00 sqm fin. This is the twentieth electrical stabilization systems CMC Marine has received the order for since when, in June 2010, the first system was commissioned, tested and verified together with Sanlorenzo shipyard on a new SL82. After that system, the Ameglia based shipyard continued to work with CMC Marine by ordering seven more electrical systems for luxury yachts from 72 to 108 feet. Simultaneously, the Benetti shipyard chose Stabilis Electra for its new model range, the Delfino 93 motor yacht, officially presented for the first time at the Cannes Boat Show 2010, confirming the choice for the following sisterships.

The Stabilis Electra stabilizers are the first stabilization system in the world to be actuated with an electrical motor instead a traditional hydraulic system and are an international patent of CMC Marine srl (European patent p. 2172394 and U.S. Patent p. 12/571842). The electric actuator advantages compared to a traditional hydraulic system are many and can be briefly summarized as follows:

  • Higher rotation speed which greatly improves the stabilization anchor
  • No significant loss of power that means the need of installed power is lower
  • Significant reduction of the absorbed power (even more than 50%)
  • Reduced weight of the actuator
  • Reduced volumes
  • High reduction of the system noise
  • Easier installation with the consequent drastic reduction for the shipyard in installation cost and times.
  • High system reliability
  • Simplified maintenance.

Today the consolidated range of Stabilis Electra consists of two models, the 18BR for boats from 24 to 35 meters and 16BR for boats from 18 up to 24 meters that was recently presented and already installed on two Sanlorenzo SL72 motor yachts. The larger models are being drawn up, for applications on superyachts from 35 meters up.

The range STABILIS ELECTRA is perfectly integrated with the established range of products of CMC Marine, which includes a full range of hydraulic stabilizer fins, named STABILIS MECHANICA, with fins ranging from 0.75 to 4 square meters and the series Dualis, hydraulically or electrical dual counter-rotating propellers thrusters with power ranging from 35 to 130 kW.

Barcelona Boat Show 2011 prepares for its 50th Anniversary

July 08, 2011

With four months to go, the International Boat Show of Barcelona is preparing a very special edition with an attractive programme of activities on occasion of its 50th anniversary. Barcelona Boat Show 2011 prepares for its 50th Anniversary

The next edition, which will take place from the 5th to the 13th of November, will be held in its usual venues: the Gran Via exhibition centre, which will house the majority of exhibitors and Port Vell, where the On-Water exhibition will take place.

Alongside the commercial exhibition, which encompasses all types of products and services related to sports and recreational boating, the show will also host a wide range of attractive activities on occasion of its 50th anniversary.  “We want to make Barcelona vibrate and breathe a nautical atmosphere and explain to the public that boating does not only give fans great satisfaction, but is also a sector that creates employment and wealth for the country”, said the president of the Organising Committee, Luis Conde.

One of the main initiatives is the “Trofeo Salón Náutico Ciudad de Barcelona-Semana Catalana de Vela” (City of Barcelona Boat Show-Catalan Sailing Week Trophy), a spectacular event on the Barcelona coast, in which around 1,000 vessels are expected to participate with the aim of bringing the sailing world to the general public. All disciplines will be represented, such as the optimist class-for the youngest navigators – cruisers, light sail and kitesurf. The contest, which will be held during the weekends, is organised by the Catalan Sailing Federation.

The history of the Boat Show in an exhibition

Other proposals include the publication of a book, which synthesises the five decades of the show and of the sector in Spain, and an exhibition on the subject, which will include pictures of the posters that have advertised the show since its foundation.

Riva motorboats in the port

Another activity will be the exhibition of about thirty classic Riva boats, built by this famous Italian shipyard in the 50s and 60s. Visitors to Barcelona port will also be able to see these emblematic boats sailing along the Barcelona coast. This event is organised with the collaboration of the Riva Historic Society and will take place during the last weekend of the show.

This edition will feature a commemorative stamp

Another of this year’s surprises will be the issue of a stamp on the opening day to commemorate its 50th edition.  A special sub-post office will be set up where the official postmark will be applied; a special envelope will also be created for the event, The Boat Show will also coin a commemorative 50th anniversary medal, which will complete a unique world collection. Dedicated on this occasion to the Spanish Armada, the Barcelona Maritime Museum has been commissioned to design the coin, which reproduces the Buque de Proyección Estratégica (Strategic Projection Vessel) “Juan Carlos I”. Collectors will be able to acquire the coin in the show’s offices.

50th Anniversary Gala

With the aim of celebrating this long journey with the sector’s main agents, the show is holding a Commemorative Gala on opening night in the Palau Nacional de Catalunya, which will include a tribute to exhibitors that have been participating in the show since the beginning.

The Barcelona Boat Show, the first edition of which dates back to 1963, is one of the oldest in the Europe, founder member of the International Federation of Boat Show Organisers (IFBSO) and, currently, an international benchmark. With the “Creu de Sant Jordi”, the Placa de Oro al Mérito Turístico and the Medalla de Oro al Mérito Deportivo, among other public recognitions, the event still has the main objectives it had when it began: to promote the industry and encourage interest in nautical sports and navigation. Organised by Fira de Barcelona and held annually, the show has the backing of the Asociación Nacional de Empresas Náuticas, ANEN, and of the sector’s leading organisations.

Five theme areas

This year’s show will maintain its five traditional theme areas located in Gran Via (Espai del Mar, Fun Beach, Marina Tradicional, Espai del Pescador and Espai Innovació), with numerous activities for professionals and the general public, such as fishing simulators, sea initiations, announcements of regattas, seminars, talks by navigators, etc.

Village in Port Vell

After the success of the last two years, the organisers will again set up a Village in Port Vell, with the sponsorship of Codorniu, featuring a restaurant and terrace café. The aim is to provide business persons, sportspersons and guests from the nautical world with a meeting place.
