Rolex China Sea Race 2012: Line Honours Scheduled for Tonight

April 06, 2012

The race coming to its end is heating up for the 2012 Rolex China Sea Race. Current fleet leader, Geoff Hill’s sailing yacht Genuine Risk, is currently (1700 hrs UTC +8) 106.9nm from the finish and is expected to arrive in Subic Bay around 0038 this evening. The team is sailing 14 knots, on track to take the Sunday Telegraph Trophy for Line Honours and a Rolex Yacht-Master timepiece.

Singapore entry Zanzibar made gains overnight and is currently (1700 hrs, UTC +8) sitting first overall on corrected time, although the lead is changing regularly between EFG Bank Mandrake, Red Kite II and Hi Fi. The final outcome will depend on the best tactics for approaching what are typically tricky conditions at the Filipino coast.

“Looking at the offshore weather for today, one can see that the predicted high pressure zone that normally sits over central China is re-establishing itself and that the pressure gradient is producing east-northeast wind,” said RHKYC Sailing Manager Alex Johnston, “which is going to be great for the race fleet as they head down the track towards Subic Bay. The wind will be on the beam, or just after the beam, which is a great point of sail, and so the boats, after a fairly frustrating day yesterday, will certainly be starting to accelerate. The back of the fleet will benefit first from the wind while the front of the fleet will unfortunately get it last. The advantage is that for the front of the fleet the wind will be further after the beam and therefore will hopefully produce slightly faster boat speed… although not necessarily much wind speed. The boats with asymmetric sails –Genuine Risk, the TP52s and the Hot 40s, like Ambush and Sell Side Dream– will be loving these conditions.”

Frederick Peter Churchouse on Moonblue 2 gave a rundown on current (1700 hrs, UTC +8) conditions: “We’ve got some wind at last for the first time during the race. It’s blowing about 12-13 knots with beautiful conditions; flat sea and the sun is shining. According to the radio scheds there are certainly a lot of boats within 10 or 15 miles of us, not quite within viewing distance, but we were close to Redeye this morning. Given that we had such bad winds the first 36-40 hours, and if this wind keeps up, at the very earliest we could arrive late on Saturday night or early Sunday morning, but there’s still a long way to go and the weather forecasts still show some patches of very light air.”

Nautor’s Swan at Hainan Rendez-Vous in China

April 05, 2012

The world renowned luxury sailing yacht builder Nautor’s Swan is happy to invite all Swan devotees to Hainan Rendez-Vous boat show in Hainan, China. Nautor’s Swan representatives will be on location from 5th to 8th April, 2012, attending the largest of its kind boat show in the region. The team will be pleased to discuss the current Swan Line yachts and provide updates on the latest happenings from the Yard in Finland.

Naturally enough for a name associated with some of the finest sailing yachts in the world, Nautor’s Swan will be presenting its full portfolio of products and services.  Information will be available on the entire Nautor’s Swan model range, as well as Nautor’s Swan Charter and Brokerage.

Nautor’s Swan is a leader in the luxury sailing-yacht market.  Globally recognised, it is the producer of exquisitely crafted yachts offering the perfect balance of style, performance and comfort, ideal for racing and luxurious cruising.

Nautor’s Swan is experiencing strong interest from China and is now represented throughout China and surrounding countries.  The exponential growth in awareness seen by the Nautor’s Swan brand is attributable to its presence in China since 2010.  Last year Nautor’s Swan successfully fought off serious global competition to win the ‘Asia Boating Award 2011 for Best Production Sailing Yacht’ further heightening their Asian profile.  Leonardo Ferragamo, who acquired the Finnish yard in 1998, will be present at the show and it is hoped that his association will attract Chinese buyers.

Ettore Mattiello, Nautor’s Swan, commented; “We are delighted to have a presence at one of the most prestigious yacht shows in the region.  The Hainan Rendez-Vous continues to grow year on year, and with the focus purely on luxury yachting, it is only right that Nautor has a presence at the event.  With the marine industry developing at such a fast pace, China provides a valuable opportunity for us to be able to show potential buyers, and the industry, how we are harnessing new innovations to produce yachts which offer perfect handling whether in a cruising or racing environment.”

90ft McConaughy superyacht Genuine Risk leads the way at Rolex China Sea Race 2012

April 05, 2012

Dubois 90 sailing yacht Genuine Risk, built by McConaghy in 2004 is leading the way to take line hours. Welbourne 52 sailing yacht HiFi, built by McConaghy in 2007 is battling it out for first in IRC Division 0, with only one nautical mile between them and Freefire. The Mills 41 yacht Ambush, built by McConaghy is in IRC Division 1.

Over on the British Channel, Andrew Pearce’s new McConaghy Ker 40 yacht Magnum III is leading the Warsash Spring Series, coming first in IRC 1 by 9 points after 3 Races and 12 points of the 4th place RAN.

Peter Craig Appointed as Principle Race Officer for the Pendennis Cup

April 05, 2012

The 2nd – 7th July 2012 will see the return of the Pendennis Cup to Cornwall. Organised by Pendennis Shipyard every two years the yacht regatta hosts an amazing range of superyachts to the waters of Falmouth Bay for four days of challenging competing. For the first time this year a professional race officer has been selected to take charge of the race.

Esteemed yachtsman Peter Craig from Marblehead, USA, has a wide range of experience with many of the premiere international regattas, including the Bucket Regattas and the Perini Navi Cup, the Maxi Rolex World Cup, the Swan World Championships and the Volvo Ocean Race.

Peter is certainly looking forward to the Pendennis Cup “It’s probably a combination of things – the renowned port of Falmouth, which I’ve heard so many good things about and the beautiful yachts that make up the Pendennis fleet every year. As a kid, I sailed on a wooden, gaff rigged schooner during my New England summers so an epic schooner line up that includes the likes of Mariette, Eleonora, Altair, Adela and Athos will be something special for me. This year the Pendennis Cup fleet consists of a wide variety of vessels in terms of size, rig and age for which we are developing a set of rules that facilitates the best racing conditions for this diverse fleet. I am looking forward to overseeing the racing, especially in the more challenging waters of the UK, where weather as well as tide can have a dramatic influence on a vessel’s performance.”

Peter will be working alongside the race committee from the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club, who managed the racing in 2010, tying in with their expertise of local conditions to create the most exciting courses possible for both crews and spectators.

To date next year’s fleet includes 13 classic and modern sailing yachts totaling a remarkable 450m + in length overall. The fleet so far consists of the 62m megayacht Athos, and the 55.5m sailing yacht Adela restored by Pendennis in 1995 and a regular visitor to the yard. Other yachts confirmed are the superyacht Altair, the charter yacht Eleonora E (ex Eleonora), the sailing yacht Mariette, the superyacht Mariquita (one of the oldest participants built in 1911), Bequia, Breakaway, Bare Necessities, the luxury yacht Mikado, Zarik, the sailing yacht Unfurled and Velacarina.

St. Barths Bucket Regatta 2012: Great Success for Hoek Design Superyachts

April 05, 2012

The St. Barths Bucket Regatta 2012 at the end of March was a huge success for the four Hoek Design superyachts, including the charter yacht This Is Us, the superyacht Firefly, the sailing yacht Marie as well as the Athos megayacht that took part in this popular race.

THIS IS US

Proving that boats from the Hoek drawing boards perform equally as well as they look, the 43m classic charter yacht This Is Us, launched in 2006 at Holland Jachtbouw as Skylge, won the overall prize for best perfoming yacht. Not only was This Is Us first in her class, she also triumphed over all classes on handicap out of a fleet of 47 superyachts.  “This success underlines the way large sail yachts are becoming more performance oriented,” says Andre Hoek. “This Is Us is the only schooner ever built with a lifting keel and sails extremely well in both light winds and heavy air. To come first out of such an exceptional fleet of vessels is a major achievement for the owners and crew.”

Luxury sailing yacht FIREFLY

FIREFLY

Making her Bucket debut was another extraordinary innovative boat from Hoek Design. The 35m luxury yacht Firefly is the prototype of the new one-design F-class, the second of which is already under construction. “Firefly showed her mettle by beating four J-class yachts on elapse time in most of the races and coming second overall in her class. She also outperformed many superyachts that are way larger both upwind and downwind in light and heavy airs.”

MARIE

Also racing around the stunning island of St Barthélemy to great effect was the 55m sailing yacht Marie, completed by Vitters in 2010. “Marie had an exceptional week, coming fourth in her class and in eighth spot overall,” explains Hoek. “She had to start as one of the last boats on the race course and most days caught up with over forty yachts, some of which started an hour ahead on a two-hour course.”

Megayacht ATHOS

ATHOS

The fourth Hoek Design yacht to feature in St Barths had the distinction of being the largest on display. Also built by Holland Jachtbouw, the giant 62m megayacht Athos was one of the most spectacular sights on the whole course. “It was marvellous to see this stunning schooner wow the crowds for the first time in a Bucket regatta and her potential is now clear for all to see,” concludes Hoek. “Everyone at Hoek design is genuinely proud of the achievements of our vessels in St baths and reminded of what a rpivilege it is to partner with such ambitious owners.”

First interior renderings of the superyacht Sunreef 82 DD due to be launched in July 2012

April 05, 2012

Sailing yacht Sunreef 82 Double Decker, currently in build by the prestigious Polish shipyard Sunreef Yachts, is a spectacular catamaran, featuring sleek hulls as well as a streamlined deckhouse topped with a giant 35m2 flybridge inspired by large superyachts. The Sunreef 82 superyacht is scheduled to be launched in July 2012 with the grand debut at the Cannes Boat Show 2012.

The hulls and wet deck of the luxury yacht Sunreef 82 are currently in a single piece, and all the bulkheads have been installed. The fuel tanks have been placed within the hulls. The installation of the mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems hidden in the floors is scheduled next, with the installation of the bathroom units and engines intended as the next step. The impressive CNC-cut flybridge mould has just arrived from Holland. Its infusion and addition to the wet deck is planned for Mid April 2012.

The everlasting stylish look of the hull line is the result of Sunreef’s advanced design technologies and ongoing research into new solutions and inspirations. Sunreef’s Naval Architecture Bureau is studying performance and sea capabilities using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at its highest levels in collaboration with K-Epsilon and Rivoyre Ingenierie based in Sophia Antipolis, and applying Finite Element Analysis to structural calculations for the optimization of structural parts.

The Sunreef 82 DD superyacht has been designed with integrated stepped hull chines to increase interior space without compromising on performance. In the double deck concept there is one spacious owner cabin in the front, and a large and bright salon with an internal helm station with sea views. That is why this model is a perfect alternative to a traditional motoryacht which consumes tremendous amounts of fuel. The Double Deck catamarans have a chance to become superyachts of the future with their comfort on board and low fuel consumption resulting from its low draft and the possibility of cruising on sails in keeping with the maximum stability at all times.

The private yacht Sunreef 82 will accommodate up to 7 guests in one beam-wide owner suite, one VIP queen cabin and one guest twin cabin convertible to a double cabin with an additional Pullman bed, attended by two crew to assist the owner, a sailor himself. The vessel will feature the canoe type boom and carbon mast, Sunreef’s in-house speciality.

An innovative element aboard the superyacht Sunreef 82 DD is the smart mezzanine floor housing a coffee table within a lounge area located on the starboard side of the main deck within the dining area. There will also be a purpose-built storage area for painting equipment, as the owners enjoy this activity while sailing. This additional floor provides more space below decks for extended cabin or storage space. The main deck also includes a second lounge area and provides access to the crew hull on the port side and guest hull on the starboard side.

The owner suite, arranged over two floors, is set to occupy the entire forward section of the yacht with a master cabin, Jacuzzi and gym on the main deck, and wardrobe and floor-to-ceiling storage and bathroom located below decks in port and starboard hulls respectively. The right corner of the master cabin includes LED-lit Jacuzzi set on a two step platform, surrounded by an orchid jardinière, providing amazing sea views through beam-wide 180 degree panoramic windows. The treadmill, integrated within the floor, is positioned in the centre and a low Japanese-style king-size bed with two night tables occupies the left part of the suite.

Guest cabins are generously sized with three way access to a queen size bed with spectacular sea views through 6-part large windows, and have a separate bathroom and shower, spacious wardrobe, several lockers, a comprehensive entertainment system and air conditioning.

Interior design has been customised following the owners’ suggestions, and will combine light and natural colours and materials finished in a classic style.

The impressive 64 m2 cockpit holds a large dining table for up to 8 guests, sunbathing mats, wicker armchairs, a flower area, and storage for diving equipment. There is additional space for a tender and a jet ski hidden in a purpose-built locker under the main sun pad in the cockpit. The spacious flybridge is fitted with the main helm station, bar with barbecue and ice maker, large dining table and comfortable deckchairs, as well as a coffee table.

The Sunreef 82 DD superyacht will be built of light high-tech composite materials that the shipyard introduced to construction in 2007, and is scheduled for launch in July 2012. The vessel’s sail plan includes private use only by the owners and their party in the Caribbean and the US.

Rolex China Sea Race 2012: Day 2 – 1700hrs

April 05, 2012

It has been a long, slow day on the water for the 25 yachts still racing in the Rolex China Sea Race, with light winds plaguing the fleet. However on a positive note, the yachts have yet to stop moving.

Dubois 90 sailing yacht Genuine Risk

Dubois 90 sailing yacht Genuine Risk

Steve Ho’s Surfdude retired at around 2000hrs on night one due to engine problems and although the race relies on wind power, this would have had a knock on effect on the ability to recharge batteries and maintain radio contact with the fleet. The remainder of the fleet continued along the rhumb line towards the Philippines, with Genuine Risk posting an average speed of 10kts, until the early hours of this morning, when the wind softened, and the fleet slowed considerably.

At that point several boats were sailing well south of the rhumb line, with Jelik V throwing in an early tack to get back above, while Hi Fi and Freefire both waited until around early afternoon and the Genuine Risk superyacht a further hour before changing their direction in the search for boatspeed.

There was never really any doubt that, barring mechanical failure, Geoff Hill would be leading the pack, however his challenge on Karl Kwok’s 12 year-old record of 47h 43m 7s must be considered ‘dead in the water’ given the gentle conditions.

A battle still rages for the IRC Overall crown, with the Hi Fi yacht and the sailing yacht Jelik V swapping the leading role in Division 0 and EFG Bank Mandrake consolidating her lead in Division 1. Talking Head has stolen a march on Red Kite II in the slow conditions and Xena is currently charging ahead of the Premier Cruising fleet, with Redeye maintaining a strong performance in the Cruising Class.

Much can change overnight, however the 2012 Rolex China Sea Race will test the sailors’ patience and endurance, and is destined to be a marathon and not a sprint.

Les Voiles de St. Barth 2012: Tight at the top

April 05, 2012

Today´s Les Voiles de St. Barth fleet saw better breeze with a variable 8-12 knot easterly which provided all classes with a right chance to perform. The race committee chose well again – reaching into their bag of 25+ courses and selecting picture postcard worthy courses around the northwestern end of the island as well as neighboring islets: 20-nautical mile for the Maxi and IRC 52 classes, and 17 miles for all of the other classes.

Classic Beauties
The first off the line were Classic and Non-Spinnaker Racing classes. With several dropouts before the regatta began, the Classic class was reduced to two, but you couldn’t have come up with two more standout beauties than the Olin Stephens-designed yawl Dorade and the Fife-built 80-foot yacht Mariella.

The 52’ sailing yacht Dorade was originally launched in 1930 and was considered, then and now, a breakthrough in yacht racing design. Purchased by American Matt Brooks three years ago, Dorade underwent an extensive refit in Rhode Island to ready the boat for a return to ocean racing. Brooks is keen to repeat all of Dorade’s early races, starting with the Newport Bermuda race in June.

Jamie Hilton, tactician on board, said, “What is unique is that you are sailing a boat that is one of the richest pieces of yacht racing history and then at the same time you are trying to race her hard and be cognizant of what it is we are sailing on.” Brooks’ wife Pam, added, “Our goal is to take her back to what she was designed to do.  We want other people who own classic yachts to be encouraged to do that too.”

In the Non-Spinnaker Racing class, Antiguan Bernie Evan-Wong, High Tension, is leading overall, though at press time a protest was pending. Only a point back is Ben Jelic’s J/120 sailing yacht Jaguar Island Water World from St. Maarten.

Next off was Spinnaker Racing 1, with 19 boats the biggest class, and one rife with competition. Leading after two days is Sergio Sagramoso’s J/122 yacht Lazy Dog with two bullets, followed by Frits Bus’ Melges 24 yacht Coors Light with two 2nd place finishes.

Decision vs Defiance
The Martin 49 sailing yacht Defiance is making its first appearance at Les Voiles de St. Barth, along with chartering skipper Clay Deutsch and his crew. But Deutsch is no stranger to the Caribbean racing circuit where he campaigned his Swan 68 yacht Chippewa – very successfully – until he sold it three years ago.

Boatless, he didn’t need much encouragement to get back on the race course, “We had done the St. Topez regatta and for years I dreamed of a St Barth’s regatta, and the moment I sold my boat the regatta started! Tony (his captain on Chippewa) knows I have always fantasized about this regatta and he called when he knew this boat became available.  This is the first time in St Barth’s for almost all of my crew, and they are just blown away – it’s like sailing in the Med!”

At the start of Spinnaker Racing 2, both the newly launched Carkeek 40 Decision and Defiance were keeping tabs on the other. Deutsch said, “ We had a good start with Dee (Smith, Decision’s tactician) calling the shots. They took us right to weather, so we tried to stay clear. The nice thing with this boat is it accelerates shockingly fast. No question they had the advantage at the start, and they threw dirt at us for most of the weather leg. They had a nice lead early on.” A lead they would hold until the races final miles where the fleet rounded the rock of Le Pain du Sucre.

Defiance’s crew could see both Rambler and Decision struggle in the lighter breeze there. Deutsch continued, “We were pacing ourselves with Decision, a quick, well-sailed boat. We got lucky, everyone else got stood up in there, so we kind of took the great circle route and had good breeze all the way around. And we made up a minute and a half deficit at the rock.”

“We are kind of optimizing the boat as we go. We did get two practice days, which gives a lot and we did as much rig tuning as we could, which is a big deal with these kinds of conditions. I think we have the boat set up really well. The boat has a lifting keel, a bow thruster, and a full interior; I’m shocked the boat is as fast as it is. It is impressive to sail this fast in light air.”

Rambling on

In the Maxi class, George David’s 90-foot superyacht Rambler, continues to ramble away relatively unchallenged, maintaining both the line honours and corrected time lead after two days. Just behind is the Swan 80 luxury yacht Selene and the 112-foot Baltic Niyala superyacht.

For the three boats in the IRC52 class, it’s close racing with lead changes, and no completely clear winner yet. In today’s race, Powerplay won by 1m 20sec, while Vesper led Mayhem by only eight seconds.

Leading after two days is Peter Cunningham’s Powerplay, “It was fantastic, it was nail biting around the course. There were big shifts, both velocity and directional. Tony (Rey, tactician) made some great calls, and with Nacho Postigo (navigator) and Jeff Madrigali (strategist) they just get together and have a great brains trust going, and I just do what I’m told!

Cunningham sails regularly on San Francisco Bay where the wind is very predictable and steady with small oscillations. He continued, “This variable stuff is much more challenging racing – but it’s beautiful, you’ve got the islands, the rocks, the water. It’s truly a beautiful place.”

Tomorrow is a layday for competitors, with a full day of activities planned at Nikki Beach. Racing continues on Friday, with two races planned and a first start at 11:00am.

PERINI NAVI
Founded by Fabio Perini in the late 1980s, Perini Istanbul – Yildiz Gemi, is today one of the most distinguished yards in the Mediterranean Basin. In its 42,000 square metre waterfront, the hulls of the sailing and motor yachts of the Perini Navi Group are built by a skilled and highly motivated team. Since its acquisition, Yildiz Gemi owes its reputation to The Maltese Falcon, the revolutionary 88m clipper, the flagship of the Perini Navi Fleet which was entirely completed in Turkey. The Maltese Falcon project has not only brought to the world’s attention the technical and managerial skills of Perini Istanbul – Yildiz Gemi, but has also brought rewards to the whole Turkish yachting industry.

The experienced team, united to the working method of Perini Navi, is the key factor of this yard, which most recently completed the hull of the 73m motoryacht, Picchiotti of the Vitruvius Series. This is the first 60m hull of the new series of sailing yachts recently sold by the group, which will be followed by 2 further units in the next 12 months. Furthermore, Yildiz is completing the whole construction of the first 40m racer-cruiser sloop, the first of her kind, designed in collaboration with Ron Holland. The 55m motor yacht Galileo G and the 50m sailing yacht Fidelis are 2012 finalists.

Guests extending their stay in Turkey will also have the opportunity to visit sponsoring yard DREAM SHIP VICTORY, based in Marmaris. More information and tour bookings can be made at the Kempinski in the days surrounding the gala evening.

Participation in the yard tours will be strictly by invitation only.

In addition to the yard tours, a varied cultural programme of activities has been organised to assist guests in making the most of their time in Istanbul. There will also be plenty of opportunity for guests to explore Istanbul at their leisure, with the Kempinski’s 5-star concierge service readily available to recommend the region’s finest restaurants, spas and other points of interest.
