Arman 90m Explorer yacht concept

October 24, 2011

Arman, a newly established Belgian marine design studio, presents its new 90 meter superyacht concept, also known under the codename “Dune 90″. Arman Fissette, a founder of the studio and a creator of the unique Arman 90m Explorer motor yacht concept ‘Dune 90′, describes the process that transform his extraordinary ideas into this visually stimulating design.

Arman 90m Explorer yacht concept

Arman 90m Explorer yacht concept

Obtaining the right balance between openness and privacy on a superyacht is often a delicate part of the design process and the outcome seems to be successful in relatively few cases. The outdoor areas are often too exposed to dockside onlookers or passing yachts while the interior is generally disconnected from the outside environment. Considering that owning a superyacht is as much about the onboard experience as the privilege of being surrounded by the most beautiful beachfronts in the world, one can understand that enhancing the outside views and light ingress should be one of the major focal points for a yacht designer.

The goal for Arman 90m Explorer yacht concept was to conceive an innovative and aesthetically pleasing verandah concept that would take into account the effects of radiant heating by the sun. The idea revolved around the application of a modular and multifunctional glass facade system, featuring both reduced weight and complexity as well as surprising aesthetics and light ingress. In terms of structure, inspiration was found in geodesic domes and airport terminals. However, for this rationale to be applicable on a superyacht ,to keep cost and build complexity in check the overall geometry would need to be simplified, ideally made up of large flat surfaces.

Arman Dune 90 superyacht concept

Arman Dune 90 superyacht concept

For this particular aspect of the design, the clean and taut surfaces of swerving dunes proved to be a promising reference, as they seemed the natural way of combining flat surfacing with a sense of dynamism and visual tension. The end result is a design style fittingly called “duning”, a combination of “faceting” (that places the emphasis on the surface) and “edging” (where the attention is drawn on the edges resulting from surface intersections). The edges draw the viewer’s eye and lead it across the design, while the flat surfaces between those edges are simple and clean enough to remain in the background and give center stage to the edges. Where they change direction though, the curvature becomes a hotspot for light reflection. This emphasizes certain areas of the design and gives it a certain softness that contrasts beautifully with the predominant starkness of the design.

Also the overall composition of the Arman “Dune 90″ superyacht was challenged, and the decision was made to visually make a distinct break-up between hull and superstructure, while at the same time these two parts as a whole seem to have been cut out of a single volume. For the imaginative, the idea of a mollusk shell might come to  mind, being carried by its possessor.

Arman 90m superyacht inside design

Arman 90m superyacht´s interior design

With this as a building ground, the next part of the design – the glass facade – could be started. Inspiration here was found in the intricately designed patterns present in Arabesque mosaics and window screens, which successfully combine light ingress with privacy and a high level of visual detailing.

The facade is made up of an array of triangular glass panels that fit on top of a triangular structure. The latter is aligned with the yacht’s structural frames and bulkheads to safeguard an optimal distribution of forces. This keeps the design and building process simple and out of the realm of the experimental.

The tinted glass panel is a three panel composite, coated on both sides with an opaque titanium graphic and supported by a structural panel that holds a third graphic. The superposition of these three graphics leads to a moiré-effect that produces different effects depending on the distance, viewing angle and whether the surface is front- or backlit. The combination of both layered glass and the titanium coatings on the other hand, is an effective means of keeping the heat out while precious light is allowed in.

The end result is a distinctively new Arman 90m yacht design that combines privacy  with openness, European post-modernity with North African craftsmanship and true-tested engineering orthodoxy with design prowess.

While the average size of superyachts leaving the yards these days was something unseen only a few years ago, the typical “wedding cake” stacking style of these floating palaces is something we’ve unfortunately been seeing for many decades now. Only a handful of designs really have been able to break out of that straightjacket.

Over the years, the market seems to have been conditioned by some sort of “same but bigger” mantra, as this seemed to warrant the most conspicuous yacht in the bay. However, with a new generation of yacht designers entering the scene, this reality is changing. Sheer size isn’t a guarantee for attention anymore, design is. And that’s what a one-of project like a superyacht deserves: a one-of-a-kind and appropriated design.

To celebrate the creation of his own design studio “ARMAN”, former BMW designer and marine envisioneer Arman Fissette created an innovative and visionary design style with a more monolithic approach to superyacht design. The result is a truly charismatic yacht, Arman 90m Explorer yacht taking inspiration from stealth frigates and swerving dunes, boasting a crispness and leanness that is rare for a yacht of this size.

With 90 meter bow to stern, The DUNE 90 superyacht is a true explorer yacht, equipped for any type of trip, be it on water, land or in the air, in both high-latitude or low-latitude cruising grounds. There’s a helicopter hangar aboard, together with berths for a submarine, an amphibious aircraft, three large tenders, six waverunners and a garage containing four off-road vehicles. While 10 Guest cabins and an owner’s cabin provide enough space to sleep 22, there’s an additional 28 crew aboard to run the yacht and cater to the needs of those aboard.

The upper decks are covered by a large glass atrium with arabesque-type light filters to retain a sense of privacy while natural light is allowed in and heat is kept out.

The swimming pool on the foredeck is partially overhung by the owner’s salon which features a large glass facade, called the” visor”. This feature clearly marks the “Dune 90″ superyacht’s inclination towards exploration, as if it were looking out for new things on the horizon.

The team behind this yacht is currently designing a 75 meter yacht concept and going through a yard selection process for both projects.

Heesen Motor Yacht Quinta Essentia available for luxury yacht charters in the Mediterranean

The luxury yacht Quinta Essentia was launched at the Heesen shipyard in Oss, The Netherlands on Friday, 11th March 2011. She was built under the hull number YN 14955 and is the largest and one of the most powerful Heesen yachts to be launched to date.

Heesen’s in-house naval architects, in collaboration with Van Oossanen Associates, created the sophisticated and highly efficient hard-chine hull, while Frank Laupman from Omega Architects drew the sleek and elegant exterior lines which are sure to turn heads in any port. The yacht was project managed by Nakhimov.

Yacht Quinta Essentia clearly shows her Heesen pedigree, boasting a pelican beak bow and reverse sheer. The yachts owners, in collaboration with Dobroserdov Design, personally worked on the colour scheme, which features a combination of a custom metallic dark red Awlgrip paint that is combined with oyster white which sets her apart from many of the other charter yachts that will be cruising the Mediterranean waters during the summer.

The inspiration for the dark red tone is taken from Montemaggio Merlot and reflects another of the owner’s passions – fine Tuscan wines. The same colour scheme is repeated on the limousine tender, designed by Vripack and custom built in New Zealand by Vaudrey Miller.

Charter guests onboard M/Y Quinta Essentia will not only be impressed by the stylish exterior profile and space onboard, but also by her futuristic interior in a minimalist style, conceived by interior designer Ken Freivokh and further developed by Michela Reverberi, who was responsible for the detailing and interior decoration.

The extremely attractive and conceptual interior design is modern and futuristic with an intimate atmosphere that is not too stark. The inspiration for Michela Reverberi’s interior design work was ‘Quinta Essentia’ – the fifth element – which is the highest synthesis of the four elements. These four elements – Earth, Water, Air and Fire are represented in the four guests’ cabins, while the owners’ suite with a sliver colour palate synthesizes them all. The 5th element theme of Quinta Essentia yacht is integrated subtly into the design through details, colors and patterns which are displayed against an absolute and pure white background.

From a charterer’s point of view, superyacht Quinta Essentia has a design that offers some notably luxurious features including the largest owner’s suite seen on any Heesen superyacht to date – comparable to those found on yachts of 80m or above. Other special features of the yacht include a sport a tender bay that can be flooded to allow easy launching and recovery of the tenders, a swimming pool on the main deck that is filled by a waterfall. Charterers will also love the gym and spa facilities, including a steam room and a massage room, located on the sun deck.

Motor Yacht Quinta Essentia is powered by twin 4.300kW, MTU 20V 4000 M93L diesel engines, enabling her to reach a notable top speed of 24 knots, quick enough to carry her charter guests in comfort and style along the French or Italian Riviera’s in no time.

The main deck layout creates a roomy saloon in two sections – a space for chatting and social interaction, and a dining area.

The kitchen is on the port side, while the spacious full-beam owner’s suite is to starboard.

The decks are linked by the guest staircase and three ma rble-floo red lobb ies,  each featuring small but precious works of art. The lower deck, however, is the doma in of the guests alone. There are 4 cabins – two VIPs aft and two guest cabins forward, one double and the other a twin room with extra bunk bed. The upper deck boasts a second saloon, and is also the setting for the owner’s office.

The overall interior style is ma jestic, imposing and com plete, playing off the brilliantly glossy black lacquer and rosewood against gold and silver leaf and mirrors, drawing inspiration from the striking contrast of dark and light. The impact is enhanced by moulding, bas-reliefs and cornices that emphasise the effects and spaces. All the freestanding pieces the owner specified for the interiors throughout the yacht are characterised by rare materials and refined finishes in a highly original display of styles and reinterpretations.

The main deck saloon is divided into two areas by a rosewood unit, and aft of this two generous sofas follow the curve of the wall furnishings.

The large dining table forward can seat ten guests on rosewood, leather and velvet chairs with gold leaf trim.

The bright, airy owner’s suite is accessed through a small library, and is furnished with a sofa to port and armchairs to starboard. The forward bulkhead is almost entirely mirrored, and a commode and bedside tables inspired by the original collection by André-Charles Boulle for Versailles complete the interiors. The decorative gold silk drapes fall to the floor, framing the wide windows like stage curtains. Two dressing tables flank the large bathroom.

The upper deck saloon opens out onto the exterior through the grand aft doorway. Here there is a bar with two stools, a sumptuous corner sofa, intimate conversation area with two armchairs and a small table. Two symmetrical bookcases frame two paintings and other precious objects.

A desk and chair stand in the owner’s office, along with a sofa-bed, small table and a specially designed display cabinet for precious porcelain items. The bathroom, finished in the same way as all the others in the accommodation area, makes this a comfy, independent cabin.

The ba throom interiors are notable for the contrast between light and dark. In an echo of the office bathroom, the lower deck bathrooms feature five select marbles, white onyx and five black marbles. The gold and silver leaf moulding and the style of the furnishings allow each of these spaces to harmonise with the cabin it serves. Large glazed surfaces make the shower-bath space unique, and an almost uninterrupted mirrored expanse creates a kaleidoscope of interior views. The glass shower doors are embellished with an interwoven serigraph pattern.

Only in the owner’s cab in does the use of white onyx and Egyptian alabaster invert this theme, hosting a beautiful mosaic panel, made on the owner’s request by Bisazza to reproduce Gustav Klimt’s Danae.

All the service and crew areas are skilfully laid out. Laundry, crew mess and ten berths are located on the lower deck. An independent staircase connects all these to the galley and pantry area on the main deck, and then the upper deck pantry, radio room, helm and skipper’s cabin and bathroom.

The external areas are comfortable and very well-equipped, the furnishings finished and designed with the same care and attention as the interiors. A comfortable lounge with sofa and four armchairs is located on the aft main deck, while the upper deck offers a deep sofa, bar, large round table for ten with Lazy Susan and another conversation area and sunpad forward. The flybridge has an unusual configuration with a large open-air saloon split into three zones.

To aft, there is an opulently cushioned sunpad with an ottoman/table. Then amidships there is a dining area beneath the roll bar, sheltered forward by a sliding glass screen that makes it perfect for both day and night-time use. Finally there is the forward bar and conversation area – plus a lovely hydromassage pool with glass steps, embraced by a sunpad. Shading systems protect all these spaces.

The lights from the Baldi Home Jewels collection, customised and sometimes specially redesigned to fit on board, add a further touch of magic to the interiors.

Fabric chosen are silk velvets by Manuel Canovas in strong, distinctive hues and Loro Piana silks – lustrous fabrics that enhance light and colours. Every sofa and bed is adorned by richly finished cushions.

Like all the yard’s most recent yachts, the structural, hydrodynamic and technical elements of this 50-metre semi-displacement model were designed by Mondo Marine Engineering. Powered by a pair of 2,735hp MTUs, Alexander Again yacht can reach a top speed of 20 knots while offering exceptional on-board comfort, even when pushing the limit!

Mondo Marine designs, engineers and builds its craft at its Savona construction centre. The yard is located on the sea front and occupies over 35,000 square metres, 9,500 of which are under cover. Wharves stretching over 100 metres in length can accommodate maxi yachts. Facilities include an 820-ton travel lift, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, and a 300-ton cra¬dle. We are currently constructing new warehouses and will soon begin restructuring our offices. Founded in 1978 by the Stroppiani brothers, Ferruccio and Elio Stroppiana, the company initially fo¬cused on the production of medium-sized yachts. In the early 1990s Mondo Marine began building light alloy and steel superyachts over 40m. They are all totally custom, because every yacht is a unique, irreplaceable
piece. Ferruccio and Elio Stroppiana describe the Mondo Marine philosophy as “From a drawing on a sheet of paper to the finished vessel”. They go on to say, “All MONDO MARINE builds begin with sheer emotion. The result of our work is always shaped by the owner’s demands, and we find a way to turn his or her dreams into reality. Creating a yacht’s interiors is a little like clothing a person – its owner, in fact!” Mondo Marine is part of the MONDO S.p.A. group.

Members of the jury, including university professors, yacht designers and experts of the yachting world, expressed the following opinion as to why they have chosen the SL94 yacht.

“An innovative yacht produced by a Shipyard that gets us used to the beauty without exaggerations, to the plain elegance applied in a hull of 28.60 meters but rich of innovations also regarding the onboard way of lining. A yacht to enjoy the sea faultlessly and the most strict elegance, with solutions offering more comfort and privacy to the owner and his guests. A praise to the brave entrepreneurial soul and to the interior designer, Francesco Paszkowski at his best creative effort in trend with the tailor made tradition of the Shipyard.”
