Sea Axe 5009 Oberon Yacht changes the superyacht support vessel market

April 28, 2010

SEA AXE Fast Yacht Support vessel – OBERON

The launch of motor yacht Oberon, the first SEA AXE, points toward an exciting future for Fast Yacht Support vessels. A 50-metre vessel purpose-built to provide round-the-clock service and support for a superyacht, SEA AXE 5009 Oberon is capable of travelling comfortably at high speeds in almost any sea state, thanks to the patented design of her AXE BOW.

With a top speed of 28 knots, this is the first vessel in the Fast superyacht Support market to make use of the AXE BOW, and Oberon is already in active service around the Mediterranean. AMELS’ managing director Rob Luijendijk explained the appeal of such a vessel for superyacht owners.

“Space on board the mother ship is at a premium,” he said. “The SEA AXE has a large capacity and is capable of carrying a helicopter, tenders, toys, fuels, consumables and waste, in addition to staff and relief crew.” *

The AXE BOW is a proprietary design** created jointly by DAMEN and Delft University of Technology under the direction of Dr ir J A (Lex) Keuning, associate professor of the Ship Hydromechanics Department. The theory of combining a deep forefoot with a very narrow entry in the bow pointed towards the possibility of significantly reducing the violent slamming motion of a ship in a rough seaway. The theory was subsequently proven with the successful launch of 18 AXE BOW vessels which DAMEN has delivered for use in patrol, oil-rig supply, and other offshore duties where consistent speed, easy motion, heavy weather reliability, and good fuel economy are all essential factors. Now with Oberon, AMELS has taken the proven AXE BOW concept and applied it to a different market, to meet the demands for reliable support vessels among largeyacht owners.

The 50-metre SEA AXE is equipped with a 30-metre open deck with a total working area of 230 square metres and 250 tonnes of deck-cargo capacity. The deck crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 14 tonnes when extended to 10 metres. Capable of crossing the Atlantic at a cruising speed of 18 knots, the SEA AXE 5009 can be configured according to the client’s needs. For example, the standard configuration provides accommodation for a maximum 12 crew and staff, although it is possible to provide accommodation for additional staff with a customised layout. Amels Press Release: ‘OBERON’ changes the support vessel market

Where comfort and aesthetics often play second fiddle to functionality in the world of the support vessel, the SEA AXE range sets new standards, as Luijendijk explains. “We want to produce Fast Yacht Support vessels whose looks match their high performance, and which complement the mother ship rather than looking like the poor relation. This is why we offer the option of fairing and painting the SEA AXE hull to a standard that you would normally associate with a superyacht rather than support ship.

“Another option is to finish the deck in Bolidt artificial teak, which is very tough and hard-wearing but looks good too. Equally, we furnish cabins on a SEA AXE to the same standard as a crew interior on an AMELS luxury yacht. We asked the market what it wanted from a Fast Yacht Support vessel, and comfort and aesthetics were important requirements.”

In addition to the SEA AXE 5009, other models in the SEA AXE range are the smaller 3707 and the larger 6711, all available in customised configurations. To date, 24 AXE BOW vessels have been sold, of which 18 have already been delivered.

AMELS manages the sales and marketing for the SEA AXE range. AMELS is the exclusive yachtbuilding member of the Dutch DAMEN Shipyards Group, consisting of more than 34 shipyards and marine-related companies throughout the world. DAMEN, a family owned company, employs over 6,700 people, delivered 150 vessels in 2009 and has an annual turnover of approximately €1.4 billion.

* Functions of a Fast Yacht Support vessel such as SEA AXE: safer helicopter operations, solves the hazards of landing on the mother ship frees up costly luxury space aboard the mother ship providing shuttle facilities for guests providing security as a guard ship scouting for anchorages platform for diving and fishing excursions storage and retrieval of water toys such as sailing yachts, tenders, Jet Skis etc storage of fuel, consumables and waste accommodation of staff and relief crew.

** Origins of the SEA AXE bow

SEA AXE development began in 1995 with TU Delft studies of the effect of hull lengthening on efficiency, operability, and operating costs. Tank tests of bows with fine sections and a deep forefoot resulted in the AXE BOW, which reduces vertical acceleration and slamming in heavy weather, causes of seasickness and crews having to slow down. The AXE BOW is also more efficient in smooth water, has better seakeeping in large waves, and resists broaching. The SEA AXE has a true AXE BOW, and should not be confused with yachts that merely have fine bows.

The Owner’s suite on the luxurious Codecasa Family Day super yacht, is offering a large space, including the owner’s studio with an openable bulkhead able to transform itself, when required, into a fantastic balcony with sea views. The remainder of the other six guest cabins, have also a larger space dedicated to them, as well as the lounge area and all of the other relaxation areas onboard. The internal decorative lines are by architects Anna Maria and Franco Della Role, with the owners contribution as well. They can be described as simple and extremely modern.

The vessels main characteristic is the dining room, located on the bridge-deck, occupying the whole area, usually dedicated to the bridge lounge. The round table,  positioned at the centre of the dining room,  can accommodate up to 16 guests. There is an elevator connecting all the five levels of the Family Day superyacht, from the tank deck to the sun deck.

The vessel has been built following the Lloyd’s Register and MCA rules, mounts Caterpillar engines and offers the best navigation and communication electronic equipment. Conceived to be ocean-going, she is also fitted with Quantum anchor “zero speed” stabilizers. The delivery to her Owner is scheduled for June 2010.

Once Family Day is launched, the Codecasa slipway will be occupied by a 50 metre motoryacht, whose construction is to be finished by summer 2011. Their twin yard, located nearby, is in charge of a construction of a 65 metre yacht, which is already on the way and will be launched on the 5th of June. After this date, the slipway will be dedicated to the construction of the first new 42 metre yacht of the Codecasa Vintage Series.

To complete Codecasa’s full building schedule, there is a launching of the 46 metre open motoryacht of Maria Carla series, due to be launched at the end of the May. The Heesen unveil their new 6500 Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF)

April 27, 2010

Heesen Yachts 6500 Fast Displacement Hull Form

Heesen Yachts have unveiled their revolutionary 65m aluminium design based on the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF). The innovative concept for the new hull design will increase overall performance.

Tank tests have shown that the design of the FDHF improves the efficiency of the vessel by around 30% in comparison with traditional hard chine and round bilge hulls. The Heesen 6500 FDHF has a sleek slenderness and special form resulting in a very low wave profile over the entire speed range, while also improving its manoeuvrability and sea-keeping ability. As a result the new Heesen 6500 hull form lowers its environmental impact in terms of engine emissions and reduces the running costs the yacht.

The 65m Heesen Superyacht will feature exterior design by Dutch designer Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. Other leading international designers have also been asked by Heesen to create alternative exterior styling proposals.

Notable design features of Omega Architects concept include a touch-and-go helipad forward and a semi-shaded area surrounding the swimming pool on the main deck. On the lower deck there is a large beach club area, with a bar, sauna and hammam. As well as the large transom platform, there is a side balcony that opens from the hull to port providing the owner an additional area to enjoy the sea.

Heesen Yachts will present the innovative 65 Fast Displacement Hull Form at the Monaco Yacht Show on September 22nd 2010.

Superyacht ‘Addiction’ the first AMELS 177 & Yacht Bel Abri, the first Limited Editions Amels 171 for charter

April 27, 2010

Motor Yacht ADDICTION:

Built for a repeat customer, the first AMELS 177 has passed her acceptance sea trials three weeks ahead of schedule.

Early photos of the brand new AMELS 177 reveal the typically sleek lines of a classic Tim Heywood design. Photographed during her acceptance trials on the North Sea, ‘Addiction’ is the latest yacht to be ordered by a repeat client of Dutch superyacht builder AMELS.

‘Addiction’ has been completed in good time for the European yachting season. She passed her acceptance trials with flying colours, earning sign-off from the owner’s representative and Lloyds Register in just a single day. “This is a very good start to the launch of our AMELS 177 range,” commented managing director of AMELS, Rob Luijendijk. “The success of the LIMITED EDITIONS concept is already well proven with our existing models. As with our other premium semi-custom designs, we believe the AMELS 177 offers all of the benefits of personalisation that you would find with a pure custom build – but without the long design process and technical risks.”

The 177-footer is an evolution of the very successful AMELS 171, of which six yachts have now been launched. British designer Tim Heywood drew the lines of both the 171 and 177. “The additional 2 metres of the AMELS 177 serve both an aesthetic and functional purpose,” said Heywood. “The longer hull makes it possible to create an even more elegant, sleeker profile, while also creating the space for a very generous 30sqm Beach Club at the stern, a luxury area close to the water for the owner and his guests to enjoy.”

A very large transom door and integrated hydraulic crane make it possible to handle large personal watercraft such as Jet Skis with ease. There is even the option of a touch-and- go helicopter pad.

The sleek and feminine lines of the AMELS 177 have been further enhanced by the distinctive Moondust coloured hull paint, whose sophisticated tones contrast very effectively with the Oyster White superstructure and charcoal-grey accents. The interior design of Addiction has been created from a combination of two of the best design houses in the superyacht industry, Nuvolari Lenard of Italy and Axel Vervoordt of Belgium.

Sir Ian Collett of yacht consultancy Ward & McKenzie, the project managers and owner’s representative commented: “Our team was impressed by the level of organisation and professionalism of the AMELS team. ‘Addiction’ is the second successful vessel we have built with the company. This, the first 177, is a beautiful design by Tim Heywood and well constructed by AMELS. All in all, this project has been an interesting, exciting and pleasurable experience for the buyer’s team.”

After delivery, the yacht Addiction will be managed by Verpeka Yacht Brokerage, based in Monaco. Managing director Nataliya Verpeka, who moved from her native Russia to the Mediterranean 18 years ago to pursue a career in international yachting management, commented on the AMELS 177: “I was privileged to be on board Addiction for the very first acceptance sea trial of this new AMELS model, and was very impressed with the yacht’s performance. Having been closely involved with other projects, I know how rare it is for a yacht to come through its initial sea trial so smoothly.”

The AMELS yard in Vlissingen is running at full capacity with nine projects currently underway. Rob Luijendijk said: “Considering the challenging economic conditions in the global economy these past two years, we are delighted to be so busy with the planning and build of various yachts in our range, the LIMITED EDITIONS AMELS 171, 177, AMELS 199 and AMELS 212, as well as DAMEN’s 50m and 67m SEA AXE Fast Yacht Support vessels.”

AMELS Yachts is the exclusive yacht-building member of the Dutch DAMEN Shipyards Group, consisting of more than 34 shipyards and marine-related companies throughout the world. DAMEN, a family owned company, employs over 6,700 people, delivered 150 vessels in 2009 and has an annual turnover of approximately €1.4 billion.

Motor Yacht BEL ABRI:

Superyacht BEL ABRI is to be the first Amels 171 Limited Editions to be available for luxury yacht charters. The Amels 171 superyacht has already been very successful and popular amongst mega yacht owners with styling by Tim Heywood and an interior by Laura Sessa Romboli. The Limited Editions Amels 171 allows for some customization and individualisation which enables an owner to get value in terms of price and preferences.

Motor yacht Bel Abri’s owner made the most of the customisation process to increase the size of the owner suite, making a good change for charters. This meant the main-deck starboard stateroom found aboard other 171s was replaced. Outdoor entertainment and alfresco areas were also important, so BEL ABRI features a much larger Jacuzzi pool on her sundeck. Also, Sessa Romboli thematically tied some of the interiors to the outdoors, such as the bridge-deck lounge which has white and blue fabrics as well as a variety of mixed woods throughout like maple, sycamore, walnut and zebrano panelling and furnishings. The South American hardwood sucupira is also featured with its chocolate tone and fairly coarse texture.

A large new modern superyacht with accommodation for 12 guests yacht BEL ABRI makes an excellent charter yacht for luxury yacht charter holidays. Please contact CharterWorld for more.

Perini Navi SuperYacht Sloop FIVEA launched yesterday

April 26, 2010

The Perini Navi superyacht sloop Fivea was launched yesterday during a private ceremony

A selected group of people gathered at the Picchiotti site for the launch of the 48th yacht in the Italian yard’s history and the third in its 45 metre (148 ft) series created by Ron Holland.

Superyacht Sloop FIVEA by Perini Navi Shipyard

All three yachts in the 45 metre series have a steel hull with fine entries, however there are also differences among all of them. The superyacht launched in 2007 under the name Helios, includes a sunbathing area aft on the flying bridge and helm forward. The 2006 launched superyacht Heritage, for example does not have the sunning spot, so her twin helms are aft.

On the other hand the latest superyacht of this series FIVEA is modified in two ways. First, she contains twin Caterpillar C18 ACERTs in her engine room. Heritage and Helios both have a single Caterpillar C32 diesel engine. In addition, Fivea’s superstructure has a few more modern touches, for looks and aerodynamics.

The sail area, encompassing nearly 1,200 square meters (almost 13,000 square feet) is impressive, as is the 51-meter-high (167-foot-high) mast. Perini Navi made the seven captive reel winches controlling the sail and the electric furlers for the in-boom furling system for the main sail. Fivea is expected to achieve a 13-knot cruise speed. Scaled back to 10½ knots, she should see a range of 4,000 nautical miles.

Fivea will keep her owner and guest comfortable, given her 9.73 metre beam, as well as her traditional interior decor created in-house. Although we don’t know yet the exact number of the stateroom sand capacity of this wonderful superyacht sloop, the yachts Heritage and Helios can accommodated up to 12 people.

Among other statements, the yard did state that yacht Fivea‘s staterooms are set up in a flexible arrangement, permitting for example use as lounges adjacent to another stateroom.
