Their export business includes the UAE, India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia and New Zealand.

Victorian based navigation aid manufacturers, Sealite, won ‘Australian Marine Industry Best Export Performance (large exporter)’. Sealite is a global exporter. Its products are in service in more than 110 countries with 100+ Authorised Distributors worldwide. End users include major military establishments, Coast Guard, Ports and Harbours and inland waterway authorities, oil, gas and mining industries and government departments.

AIMEX Chairman Alistair Murray commented that it is heartening to see so many Australian Marine Industry Exporters making inroads globally despite the current lack of government support for manufacturing in this economic climate with the high Australian dollar, the high cost of manufacturing in this country and reduced global demand having a real effect on everyone’s business. Australia has always been known for the innovation and quality of our products and having 3 equal winners in the innovation category proves that innovation is one of the cornerstones to Australia’s success here and overseas.

Sponsors of the 2011 Awards scheme include Major Sponsors; Club Marine, Nuplex Composites, Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, Department of Industry, Innovation, Science and Research, Media Partner; Boating Business and Supporting Sponsors; Sandman PR, Marine Business and MUSTO.

SELEX Elsag to unveil Cyber Security for superyachts at Monaco Yacht Show

July 13, 2011

The Yacht Technologies business of SELEX Elsag, a Finmeccanica company and one of the world’s leading providers of navigation, communication, security and entertainment solutions for superyachts, will be officially unveiling its Cyber Security Operations Centre (SOC) for superyacht customers at this year’s Monaco Yacht Show, 21 – 24 September.

SELEX Elsag to unveil Cyber Security for superyachts at Monaco Yacht Show

The Cyber SOC, which is operated by SELEX Elsag, will for the first time enable superyacht owners to benefit from a fully integrated and end-to-end cyber security service from a single partner.

With more than 250 million new cyber security threats emerging in 2010, this opportunity comes at a critical time for the superyacht sector. Many owners are placing themselves at personal and professional risk through inadequate secure protection across the whole of their onboard network.

“Cyber security threats can affect networks anywhere in the world, regardless of whether you are on land or at sea.  Worryingly, they can take a variety of forms. This means no network onboard a yacht is immune from criminal hacking, not even the navigation system itself”, John Hodder, Head of SELEX Elsag Yacht Technologies comments. “Yacht Technologies’ integrated system solutions are unique. They offer a highly robust infrastructure designed and maintained to be resilient against cyber security threats. Not only do these system solutions include the design and configuration of security into the entire onboard network from day one but now, thanks to the Cyber SOC, they also include a range of uniquely embedded cyber security services”.

The Cyber SOC will provide a range of benefits for superyacht owners and operators, including:

•A 24-hour global remote monitoring service to defend against cyber security threats and proactively address security issues before they become damaging

•Continuous analysis of network traffic and system and user behaviours to ensure that anomalies arising from implanted threats or inappropriate behaviour by authorised users are detected, identified, assessed and responded to in a timely and appropriate manner.

John Hodder concludes: “Yacht Technologies will provide the superyacht industry the same level of security and resilience as required by Government departments, commercial enterprises and critical national infrastructure providers. This will be supplied through the provision and management of secure system solutions for navigation, communications and entertainment operations.”

Yacht Technologies will be unveiling full details of its new and uniquely embedded cyber security solutions, along with the market-leading capabilities of the Cyber SOC, on its stand in the Darse Sud tent (Number: QS8O) on the first day of the Monaco Yacht Show, 21st September 2011.

Tidetech shows complex tidal influences for 2011 Panerai British Classic Week in Cowes

July 13, 2011

A recently-developed, high-resolution tidal model for the Solent and UK south coast has revealed the complexity of tidal streams and currents in this competitive racing area. The model details an area including Southampton Water, the entire Solent, the southern sectors of the Isle of Wight and the entrance to Chichester Harbour.

Tidetech shows complex tidal influences for 2011 Panerai British Classic Week in Cowes

Tidal data of this resolution has previously been the domain of government agencies, oil companies and specialist environmental modelling agencies with access to super computers. Now able to be managed on powerful laptops, the complex calculations required to create the models have been translated into easy-to-view visual tools available to competitive sailors and maritime users.

The company at the forefront of this data modelling is Tidetech, an oceanographic data specialist comprising the world’s foremost tidal surge modelling scientists and navigation experts. Of significant note, Tidetech has been recruited to supply the 34th America’s Cup with its San Francisco Bay model.

Lead scientists Dr Roger Proctor and Dr Roger Flather have between them over 60 years of research experience with the Proudman Oceanography Centre (now the National Oceanography Centre), the world’s leading centre for tidal prediction. Dr Proctor also provided elite sailing support to the British Olympic Sailing Team at five consecutive Games between 1988 and 2008.

Tidetech director Penny Haire said races in the Solent were more often influenced tactically by tides than by wind.

“This new information is so detailed that it will show tacticians how and why one particular side of a course is favoured over another and help them to position their bow in front at the next mark,” Ms Haire said.

“The south coast model clarifies various aspects of Solent currents that many competitors have found tricky in the past… for example, the model clearly shows the area of reduced tide in the lee of the Bramble Bank along with the complexities of the Hill Head region.

“The model shows lots of areas that could well influence competitors’ tactics… it’s quite revealing, as there are areas of localised tidal acceleration that occur within very short distances.

“Over Sturbridge Shoal and at Lepe, for example, there’s a visible half-knot variation within 100m distance and that could make a considerable difference to yachts within this range.”

The detailed information is available in GRIB format but also in an online viewer that allows any subscriber to see the relevant data on a computer, iPad or smart phone and make their own custom tidal atlas which can be downloaded as a PDF and printed for taking afloat.

Tidetech has provided data to vessels in many of the world’s biggest races and regattas including the Rolex Sydney to Hobart, San Francisco Big Boat Series, Melges 32 Worlds and many more.

The south coast model is also being expanded to cover the Dorset coastline in time for the Fastnet race.

Formula Marine to present unique F² Automatic Furling for sailing yachts at Monaco Yacht Show

July 06, 2011

Formula Marine has formed a strategic partnership with electronics specialists Floattech BV, called F² Advanced Sailing Technologies and will present to the Monaco Yacht Show. In its first project the two companies brought together their individual expertise to develop a highly efficient in-boom and in-mast furling system controlled with just one joy stick operation which can be located in the cockpit or any convenient position around the yacht.

Formula Marine to present unique F² Automatic in boom Furling for sailing yachts at Monaco Yacht Show

The F² system has been designed as a fully integrated package which includes the power pack, controls, industrial control system and all masts and booms. This ensures that the automated system is totally compatible with the spars and will withstand the rigors of constant use season after season.

The first F² system was fitted on a Perini Navi 46m sailing yacht Klosters  that underwent extensive testing and trials over a six month period. The carbon booms were manufactured at Formula’s specialist carbon spar facility in Montpellier, France, while the finishing and fitting of the automated furling system was carried out at Formula’s headquarters in Holland prior to installation on the yacht. A recent contract win with Oyster Marine, an international market leader of world class cruising yachts, will see Formula Marine equip a new Oyster 885 with its innovative technology.

Formula’s head of sales Wim Mooiweer said, “Floattech has a strong reputation for high quality design, programming and production of electronics, which it has built over many years in a variety of industries. Our partnership as F² Advanced Sailing Technologies combines our expertise and allows us to develop innovative products in the world of yachting, backed by Formula’s extensive experience in this market place. Our new F² system is unique due to its fingertip management of the system via just one joy stick. Furthermore using a carbon boom on the Perini Navi yacht has allowed us to add the automated furling system without any addition to the weight compared to a standard aluminium boom. A huge improvement in sail management without any additional weight.”

The F² furling system allows variable speed control of the mainsail roll out by simple speed controlled operation of one joy stick. The electronic system controls both the mandrel and the captive winch with a constant variable combination of speed and torque values. All necessary values are measured by encoders and feedback of the mandrel, the captive winch and even the boom angle towards the mast. This advanced control system is protecting the sail itself during sail operation. Reefing can also be carried out easily, from the safety of the cockpit where every individual function can be fine-tuned. The mechanics of the system have been exhaustively tested to ensure it is totally robust and able to work under extreme loads without damage to the sail. Maintenance is minimal as the system is built with the highest quality materials and parts.

Seakeeper delivers comfort to Motor yacht Makira – the first 43M Leopard superyacht

July 06, 2011

The owner of motor yacht Makira, the first 43m Leopard Yacht installed two Seakeeper M21000 gyros enabling them to spend quality time with family, host dinners and achieve a peaceful sleep onboard all thanks to a high level of comfort and vessel stabilization.

Seakeeper delivers comfort to the award winning Leopard 43m motor yacht

Seakeeper delivers comfort to the award winning Leopard 43m motor yacht

Although yacht Makira is a high-speed motor yacht, while not underway it spends a lot of time anchored outside harbors, exposed to the ocean’s rolling waves and instability.  Whether at anchor or underway, the owner needed a stabilization solution that would make the yacht’s location irrelevant to ensuring comfort for those aboard.

M/Y Makira’s owner chose Seakeeper due to the fact that the M21000 gyro draws 90% less power at only 6kW, and is 50% lighter than other gyro systems at just 3 tons.

The M21000s were installed far aft, above the yachts triple water jets with one gyro mounted port and one starboard.  The project took place at the Leopard Shipyard in France, with the assistance of Seakeeper’s local servicing installers, Nemo Marine Services.

After sea trials onboard Leopard 43m superyacht Makira, everyone was satisfied with the system.  The boat became very stable at anchor and even underway which was the goal.

Also participating in the sea trials, the Rodriguez Group ordered gyros for its next two hulls.

The Leopard 43m Yacht Makira is able to accommodate up to nine guests with a seven-person crew and combines high-performance with spaciousness.  Makira’s décor is bright and airy with plenty of natural light filtering into the cabins.  It boasts an impressive maximum speed of 35 knots, cruising speed of 30 knots and with an alternative booster can travel at 38 knots.

With no external appendages, Seakeeper Gyro Stabilization Systems are mounted inside the hull and produce a powerful righting force that virtually eliminates boat rock and roll.  The actively-controlled units optimize torque and are highly effective over a range of conditions, delivering unmatched stability at anchor, zero and low speeds, as well as while underway.

Veritais signs agreement with top marine electronics company e3 Systems - Satellite TV antennae

Under the new arrangement Veritais will now also be supplying VSAT, 3G Europe, GSM and Air time products, plus the full range of e3 IT and data services. The agreement also allows for a two‐way partnership, with Veritais technicians available to provide dockside support to e3 customers.

“It’s a logical move for us, and one really driven by our clients,” said Veritais managing director David Milner. “The border between entertainment and communications systems has been blurring for some time as Internet and satellite TV services increasingly come supplied via the same hardware as voice and data communications. From our perspective the number of requests that we are receiving to specify and fit VSAT and other similar equipment as part of an integrated entertainment / comms system looks set to only grow. This agreement with e3 Systems opens up an invaluable pool of expertise and experience that will ensure that our customers have access to the latest in IT together with an enhanced support network.”

“We’re very pleased to be working with Veritais,” added e3 Systems managing director Roger Horner. “This partnership offers us the opportunity to reach a new cross section of clients and together, the two companies can offer an unrivalled range of products and services. We look forward to a long and productive relationship.”

e3 Systems has an international team based in Mallorca, Spain with additional offices in Malta, Barcelona and Antigua and associate companies in France and Italy. Its partnership network gives additional coverage in locations such as New Zealand, Holland, Germany and the UK.
