When he accepted the invitation, Robert De Niro said: “The Cannes Film Festival is a rare opportunity for me as it is one of the oldest and one of the best in the world.”

Inviting Robert De Niro as President of the Jury of Cannes, the organizers want to pay also tribute to the co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival which celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2011. Robert De Niro, well known for his love of New York, co-founded Manhattan’s Tribeca Film Center in 1989, the Tribeca Film Festival in 2002, which has a sister festival in Doha.

“As co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival and the Doha Tribeca Film Festival I have an increased appreciation for the jury, who serve, undertaking an important role in choosing films that are represented in the world of film at its highest level, and these types of festivals help connect the international film community and have a lasting cultural impact.” M. De Niro adds.  “Having served as President of the Jury in the eighties twice, I know this isn’t an easy task for me or my fellow jury members, but I’m very honored and happy to head the jury for this year’s Cannes Film Festival.”

Considered the best actor of his generation, Robert De Niro has built a durable star career out of his extraordinary ability to disappear into a character. The son of artists, De Niro was raised in New York’s Greenwich Village and studied under Stella Adler. After rising to recognition with Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets (1973) and Coppola’s The Godfather Part II (1974, best supporting actor academy award), he gained stardom with Taxi Driver Palme d’or 1976. He went then from one masterpiece to the other : Bernardo Bertoulucci’s Novecento (1976), Elia Kazan’s Last Tycoon (1976), Michael Cimino’s The Deer Hunter (1978), Sergio Leone’s Once Upon a Time in America (1984), Brian de Palma’s The Untouchables (1987), Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas (1990) and Casino (1995), Terry Gilliam’s Brazil (1985) and Michael Mann’s Heat (1995), among others.

In 1980, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Raging Bull (1980), directed by Martin Scorsese.

He came for eight films at the Festival de Cannes, two of which won Palme d’Or : Taxi Driver, in 1976, and ten years later, The Mission directed by Roland Joffe.

De Niro dedicated to his father, a surrealist painter, his own directorial debut, A Bronx Tale (1993), which earned praise. In 2006, he directed a second feature The Good Shepherd.

His latest blockbuster comedies, Analyze This (1999) and Meet the Parents (2000) spawned sequels: Little Fockers, released late December, is currently enjoying a successful run in France.

PORALU MARINE to develop Marina in Gibraltar

December 28, 2010

Building on the success achieved during a first contract to design a marina in Gibraltar in 2008, PORALU MARINE landed a contract for a second phase of works on the Iberian Peninsula.

5.8 km² in area, Gibraltar is a very popular location, with 7.2 million tourists each year. However, Gibraltar is seriously short of facilities to host visiting yachtsmen, currently having a mere 4 marinas with approximately 1,000 moorings. It is against this background that two phases of work to create a new marina were launched.

This large scale project, awarded to PORALU MARINE, is part of a project capable of accommodating 300 boats measuring from 10 to 45 m.

Gibraltar, a project in two stages for a large scale marina

After inaugurating the first phase of the works on this site in April 2008 with a value of some 800 k€, PORALU MARINE went on to win the invitation to tender for a second stage, which accounted for a value of approximately 450 k€.

Started in mid-March 2010, this covers the design and construction of 72 further moorings to accommodate boats with lengths of 12m, 15m, 18m and 25m (including 12 units for 25m boats). Installed on piers and on Ellipse anchors, this pontoon development is clustered around ‘leisure island’, a complex comprising bars, shops, offices and casinos forming the central point of “Ocean Village”.

•The PORALU MARINE and NAUTISCAPHE (Poralu’s partner) teams started their mission by installing 200 metres of pontoons required for the boat show organized last April. After the show 50% of these pontoons were retained as they were installed originally, with the remainder re-organized in order to optimize the space around the island.

NAUTISCAPHE, which specializes in underwater anchoring systems and holds a patent for an elliptical anchoring device, installed 74 mooring Ellipses and anchoring buoys.

•In mid-May, work on site continued with the installation of the moorings and buoys to the 74 Elipses for a further 100 metres of pontoons, creating 66 berths. 2 wide gangways and a large platform were attached to the quay and provide excellent access to the marina.

Some key data for the previous phase of the works

This first phase covered the installation of floating pontoons with the special “MANTA®” design, with H-beam anchoraging and in a curved layout. These now serve the businesses and restaurants of the port complex.

This phase comprises:

•3 pontoons, each 60 metres long in a curve, for mooring 18 boats 15m in length. Each pontoon forms a platform, accessible via 2 gangways;

•1 pedestrian access pontoon at 4.75m wide and 93 metres in length, also provides moorings for 48 small local boats.

•1 pontoon 35 metres long, reserved for temporary mooring of boats belonging to yachtsmen utilizing the bars and restaurants.

Why PORALU MARINE won the contract

Overtaking its competitors in this sector, PORALU MARINE was able to capitalize on its expertise to take this contract.

With the backing of a R&D department at the forefront of technology, PORALU MARINE now offers an extensive range of products at the top of the range. The ECOSTYLE™ decking, constructed in environmentally friendly materials, covers all the pontoons. This product, exclusive to PORALU MARINE, is designed in a polypropylene composite material, is non-slip, resistant to rot, does not crack and needs no treatment. Guaranteed for 10 years, its design and composition mean that it lets UV light pass through it, therefore doing no harm to the aquatic fauna and flora below. This luxury marina also includes products taken from the MANTA® range, which combine aesthetic and technical criteria. This is a concept which resulted from a partnership between PORALU MARINE and an engineering design consultant.

With this third site, PORALU MARINE is continuing to make inroads in the UK based Markets. In 2007, the company was working at West Mersea, a town located on Mersea Island in the county of Essex in south-east England to replace the local authority pontoon giving water access to the local community. The pontoon of 100m long and 4m wide with a 36m by 9m t-end provides facilities for fishing boats unloading their catches, yachts, dinghies and other recreation requirements of the local community. For this project, PORALU MARINE installed dinghy deflectors on the perimeter of the pontoons, which prevent boats with low freeboard from being stranded between the structure of the pontoons and the seabed at low tide. The pontoon is designed to rest on the ground between tides, so the entire structure rests on the ground twice a day.

About Poralu Marine

8,000 references over the five continents have lifted Poralu Marine into the ranks of the leading international companies in the field of top of the range pontoons and harbour facilities.

PORALU MARINE is a leading player on the international stage, with two production units in France and in Canada (Montreal), a subsidiary in Australia, sales offices in Germany, Italy, Spain, England and in China and a network of agents working the key international markets.

Adventurous by nature, PORALU MARINE was one of the first in its field to use aluminium as the exclusive structure for pontoons. With the backing of a R&D department at the forefront of technology, PORALU MARINE now offers an extensive range of products: diving rafts, leisure pontoons, private jetties, etc. …, bridges, catwalks, landing stages, etc.

“We will be the first major consumer show privileged to use the impressive new Viaduct Events Centre in Halsey St,” he says. “This will be a major boost for the show and will allow many of our exhibitors to present their latest products in an even more professional manner.

“The 2011 Auckland International Boat Show will also be held during one of the biggest events to ever be staged in New Zealand: the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

“The feature match on the weekend of the show is the Australia-Ireland game. To capitalise on this we are already running a marketing campaign inviting Australian boating and rugby followers to the show.”

Peter Busfield says that, with 85,000 extra visitors to New Zealand expected during the Cup (many very high net worth individuals) and around 3000 international journalists, the Auckland International Boat Show provides a unique and powerful promotional opportunity for the New Zealand marine industry.

“This is a great chance for us to showcase our industry, our boats, our products and our services to a wider audience than ever before.”

Also helping to showcase the skills of the New Zealand marine industry will be a highly entertaining International Boat Building Competition. Featuring the industry’s best young boat builders, it will be also be held in Viaduct Harbour, in the waters adjacent to the show, on Saturday, September 17.

The 2011 Auckland International Boat Show will be held in Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour on Thursday, September 15 until Sunday, September 18.

Partnership deal for Maritime Quarter at Centenary Quay

December 22, 2010

A new Maritime and Marine Innovation Quarter at the former Vosper Thornycroft shipyard site in Woolston, Southampton is set to bring approximately 700 new jobs and renewed prosperity to the city. This will complement the work already started on site at Centenary Quay, which is set to deliver 1,600 new homes and a vibrant mix of shops and offices. The new Quarter will also boost Southampton’s national reputation and potential as a hub of marine innovation.

The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and Southampton City Council, backed by private sector finance and development, have come together in a partnership to develop the Quarter – where marine businesses will thrive by taking advantage of the best research expertise to develop innovative new products and services building.

Manufacturers have already expressed strong interest in the Quarter, bringing skilled jobs and opportunities for companies in the supply chain. A planning application for the new Quarter is scheduled for submission early in the new year and the aim is to begin work on site later in 2011.

Pam Alexander, Chief Executive of SEEDA, said: “The partnership agreement is an exciting milestone for the ambitious new Centenary Quay. As work continues on the homes and commercial space, we’ll now see a thriving hub of marine manufacturing emerging, linked closely to the higher education strengths of the city. This will help the businesses located here create innovative new products and give the new Quarter the best possible opportunity to create more jobs on the site and among supply chain businesses.”

The maritime quarter is part of the wider £500m Centenary Quay development of the former Vosper Thornycroft shipyard site. Construction work started in July when a foundation laying ceremony was attended by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Eric Pickles MP, and the Leader of Southampton City Council, Councillor Royston Smith.

The development of the Maritime and Marine Innovation Quarter will help realise the ambition of the Local Enterprise Partnership in the Solent area (Solent LEP), which was given the green light by Government recently. The Solent LEP builds on the strengths of the city of Southampton to create an environment that will better facilitate economic growth and private sector investment in the city and the Solent area, allowing businesses to grow, become more profitable, become greener and enable new businesses to form and prosper.

Councillor Royston Smith, Leader of Southampton City Council, said: “The council has always shared a vision with SEEDA to see Woolston Riverside regenerated and revitalised. With the Marine Employment Quarter moving ahead the city has just taken a giant leap towards a new era of economic growth.

“Southampton is quite rightly becoming known as a centre of excellence for marine research and business so it is only right that we should create this quarter in the city.

“Centenary Quay is a key part of Southampton’s Renaissance vision to regenerate Woolston, ultimately bringing many new jobs to an important part of the city.”

“The Sport Yachts are a favourite among Sydneysiders because they are a single level, open plan,  entertaining vessel.

“Most of our Syndication owners step on the boat, cruise to Darling Harbour or pick up some seafood at the markets then cruise around the harbour, anchor in one of the many bays, enjoy a quiet drink and then come home late in the afternoon.

“Our business clients generally buy a share in the Syndication and use it 50 per cent for entertaining and 50 per cent for family use”
