Antigua Sailing Week 2012: Final Day 5 – Winners

Geoff Hill spoke dockside in Falmouth Harbour: “This is the first time we have raced the yacht and to be honest we could have done with another week to get her ready for racing, we have been tuning her up as we raced and the team have done a great job. I have been to Antigua Sailing Week before but not for about seven years and I have to say we have received a very friendly welcome from the race organisers and all of the Antipodes team are looking forward to tonight’s prize giving.”

Peter Harrison’s Farr 115 charter yacht Sojana could only manage a third today, which put them on equal points with Antipodes. Sojana could only count three first places to Antipode’s four and lost on countback, it was that close. Jan Rupert’s Tripp 75 yacht Blackbird finished the regatta with a second place in the last race to secure third.

In CSA 1B, Stefan Lehnert’s Tripp 56 yacht Passion 4C won the last race by a handsome margin to secure not the division title. Lenhert’s team has been racing in the Caribbean all season. Antigua Sailing Week did not start well for Lehnert when his son went overboard in the first race but the German Admiral’s Cup winner has had a great week, as Lehnert explains:

“When Richard Matthews and Zig Zag picked up Phillip, I was so relieved, I thanked him by giving them a crate of champagne and it has been champagne sailing since then,” smiled Lehnert. “I must also congratulate the organisers of this regatta. It has a great atmosphere and I especially enjoyed the daily prize giving, which gives you a chance to meet other sailors during the week, I am sure Passion 4C will be back in Antigua.”

The winner of CSA 2 was already decided before today’s race. Ulrich Rohde’s Swan 53 sailing yacht Dragon Fly Plus had an unassailable lead but that didn’t stop Ross Applebey’s Oyster 48 yacht Scarlet Oyster from going for it today with Yachting World Editor, David Glenn on board. The vintage Oyster corrected out to win by just 25 seconds from Christian Reynolds, Swan 51 yacht Northern Child, posting their best result of the regatta. In today’s race Andy Middleton’s First 47.7 came third. Chris Brand’s Swan 53 yacht Merel Four could only manage a sixth today but the team from the Royal Thames Yacht Club maintained their position as third overall.

In CSA 3, Richard’s Wesslund’s J/120 yacht El Ocaso made it a perfect seven with their win today. Boat Captain, Mike Caldwell spoke dockside after racing: “It may look like we ran away with the victory but many of the races were won by a few seconds. Every single member of the El Ocaso team has made a significant contribution, we all had our moments when the bow, the trim, the driver all needed to step up and be counted and that is what they did and I am very proud of them. We have been partying together all week and I am sure we will enjoy the English Harbour rum tonight!”

Second place in the class went to Nick Burn’s First 40 sailing yacht Lancelot II. His Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club team have been battling all week with Maurio Martinez’s Brazilian team racing First 40, Smile and Wave.

In CSA 4, Calvin Reed’s First 40.7 yacht Elandra won the last race of the series by a significant margin to win Class for the second year in a row. Sir Hugh Bailey’s Beneteau 456, Hugo B was second today. The team from Falmouth, Antigua have shown incredible consistency. Throughout the week, Hugo B has only been off the podium on one occasion and that was a fourth. However, Elandra has been unstoppable and the team are class winners in consecutive regattas. Jonty Layfield’s J/39, Sleeper was third overall.

Passion 4 C

In CSA 5, Geoffrey Pidduck’s Six Metre yacht Biwi Magic came out on top in the last race of the series to win the class: “The decisive moment today was the start. Blue Peter was lee-bowing High Tide and I was taking the lee-bow off Blue Peter, but because we can point much higher than both of them, Biwi Magic got right over the top of them and we made the top mark first. High Tide should have caught up downwind but they chose to go inshore and got caught up in traffic, whilst we stayed in clear air pointing directly at the mark and that as that really. It has been a fantastic week of racing but I have to say I was kicking myself yesterday when I rounded a mark the wrong way and had to go back, we could have thrown away the win there and then. It is great to win and I am sure I will be enjoying an English Harbour rum very shortly at the Antigua Yacht Club.”

Steve Carson, owner of runner up High Tide was in good spirits despite losing out on the last race. ” I helped build that boat (Biwi Magic) before it crossed the Atlantic and I suppose it has come back to bight me!” quipped Carson.

In CSA 6, Resting Goose were already secure of the class win before today’s race. Owner David Chatterton talked about his experience at Antigua Sailing Week: “It has just been fantastic, well organized, friendly, a real joy to be here and we are delighted with our win. We are just a bunch of boys from the East Coast of England, here to have some fun and all of the yachts in our class have been a delight to sail against and party with. It has been a very special week, a big thank you to everybody involved in Antigua Sailing Week.”

In today’s race, Vince White’s O’Day 35 yacht Seal saved the best to last, winning their first race of the series but a country mile. Beneteau Oceanis 473, Ormeau was second with Philip Eynon’s prestine Swan 36 yacht Arc Angel third.

In the Bareboat Class, three yachts from KH+P had a tremendous battle, as they have done all week. Alexander Pfeiffer’s L’Oiseau des Iles won today’s race putting pressure on class leader, Horst Schultze’s Sea You Later. However Sea You Later corrected out to take second place in the last race by a solitary second from Andreas Kadelbach’s Cayenne. After a six race series, Sea You Later won the class by the narrowest of margins.

In Bareboat 2, KH+P Sapphire Dancer took a convincing victory. In second place was Stewart Reed’s Dilligaff. No doubt Stewart and his team from the UK will be celebrating the skipper’s 50th birthday in fine style tonight. The Swiss Team Carondimonio racing Balaou were third.

Tonight the legendary Antigua Sailing Week Final Awards Party will take place on the water side of the Copper and Lumber Store in the historic setting of Nelson’s Dockyard. Once the silverware has been distributed the dancing will begin. The whole place will be jumping to live music from Rico and the 4 Play Band and music from Choice FM & Grown n’ Sexy featuring Dave VJ.

MS Tûranor PlanetSolar yacht completes her first tour around the world with a success

May 04, 2012

Following over 19 months of navigation, the catamaran yacht MS Tûranor PlanetSolar is the first vessel to have successfully completed its tour around the world, using exclusively solar energy. Reaching the finish line at 2.12 pm in the Hercule harbour in Monaco after a journey of 60’006 km, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar is the world’s largest solar ship ever built. Passing all the oceans as well as continents, the eco-adventurers finally met their loved ones and the onshore crew again under the applause of a large number of visitors coming to see them.

MS Turanor PlanetSolar yacht crossing Suez Canal

Following a course close to the equator, which led through the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal, the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar yacht has made many stopovers during her voyage, such as Tangier, Miami, Cancun, the Galápagos, the French Polynesia, Brisbane, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bombay or Abu Dhabi and Doha. 28 countries in total ! These stopovers were unique opportunities to meet the local populations and to promote the use of solar energy ! The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar is the first boat to have completed a world tour entirely powered by solar energy. Departed from Monaco on the 27th of September 2010, the ship has sailed under Swiss flag during 585 days without a single drop of fuel. Thus, PlanetSolar has shown the potential and reliability of solar energy.

Initiator and expedition leader of PlanetSolar, the Swiss Raphaël Domjan was very moved and has declared right after disembarking: “We are extremely happy to have achieved this first world tour with solar energy ! We have shown that we have the technologies as well as the knowledge to become sustainable and safeguard our blue planet! This exploit would not have been possible without the support of our partners, and in particular without the support of the German pioneer of solar energy, and co-founder of PlanetSolar Immo Stroeher, who was personally and financially committed to the success of this unique adventure.”

“The MS Tûranor PlanetSolar is much more than a ship. It has become an ambassador of solar energy” says Immo Stroeher, main investor of the project. “The arrival in Monaco is only the start ! We now have to take advantage of the fame of PlanetSolar in order to promote the use of solar energy.”

Didier Burkhalter, Swiss Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs was also present to share the joy of seeing this world tour successfuly completed. The Swiss government is an official partner of the project. “The whole country is represented through this innovative project. The technology, the project PlanetSolar and the pioneer spirit of Raphaël Domjan and his crew is a reflection of Switzerland and its efforts in favour of the environment”.

Gareth Deaves, adjudicator for Guinness World Records™ will present PlanetSolar during the welcome ceremony, with the certificates for the ‘longest journey by solar powered boat’ and the ‘first circumnavigation by solar powered boat’. During its journey, MS Tûranor PlanetSolar also achieved the Guinness World Records™ for ‘fastest crossing of the South China sea by solar power ‘and the ‘fastest crossing of the Atlantic by solar power’.

They will all be there to celebrate the success of PlanetSolar on the weekend of 4 to 6 May in the Hercule Harbour in Monaco.

His Serene Higness Prince Albert II of Monaco is expected on board on Saturday, 5 May to congratulate the crew : “Welcoming back the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar after having seen her leave more than a year and a half ago is a great joy. I am happy to celebrate the success of this extraordinary adventure that proves that the resources necessary for a more environment-friendly mobility exist and can be used today. PlanetSolar, Raphaël Domjan and his team have made a big step in favour of solar energy and the Principality of Monaco is proud to be associated with this success”.

The solar ship will remain docked in the Monegasque harbour until Monday, 7 May. Then it will sail to Marseille where it will be one of the guests at the European Solar Days from 9 to 12 May.

New objectives for PlanetSolar

« The successful completion of the world tour is also a new start into a new era for the operating company PlanetSolar SA. » said Immo Stroeher. « We want to use our reputation, our contacts, our experience and our know-how in the management and implementation of solar projects in order to deliver concrete and practical solutions. As pioneers, we will support investors, individuals or companies in the realisation of their projects.»

“The successful completion of the world tour is also a departure into a new era for the operating company PlanetSolar SA.”, said Immo Stroeher, majority shareholder of PlanetSolar SA and pioneer of the German solar energy industry. “We want to use our reputation, our contacts, our experience and our know-how in the management of solar projects for the implementation of projects in the area of solar energy, and concrete, practicable problem solutions. As a builder of bridges, we will support investors, individuals and companies to implement their solar projects that are closely related to practice in a faster way – doers for doers, so to speak.”

“In a first step, we will introduce the MS Tûranor PlanetSolar to a new use. We are considering renting out the boat for scientific or commercial uses or even selling it. We are open for ideas and in talks with interested parties – from the use as a ‘green’ luxury yacht to scientific usages and the utilization as the world’s largest mobile solar power battery, everything is possible».

The Do and Think Tank PlanetSolar is intended to be financially self-supporting in the sense of a social entrepreneurship. Talks with potential partners will be taken up in the coming weeks.

Antigua Sailing Week 2012: Day 4 – Another day of episode and drama

May 03, 2012

Day 4 of Antigua Sailing Week saw another day of episode as well as drama. This year’s Antigua race is resulting in continuous fleet battles. It was a stressful day for sailors today with plenty of start line incidents and a major collision on the first upwind leg of the day in the big boat class. With the last  race tomorrow, almost all of the classes are still expected to be decided.

In CSA 1A, Stefan Lehnert’s Tripp 56 sailing yacht Passion 4C won both of today’s races, virtually assuring the German team of winning the division. Richard Matthews’ Oyster 82 superyacht Zig Zag retired from the first race of the day, dropping Zig Zag down to third overall. Hector Velarde’s NM92 yacht Locura sailed with great precision today posting two second places and lifting the team to second overall. However, the first race of the day saw a serious collision between Oyster 82 yacht Starry Night of the Caribbean and On Deck’s Farr 65 yacht Spirit of Isis, which resulted in a large part of the Farr 65′s transom being smashed in. Luckily only very minor injuries were sustained and once safely on shore, the skipper and owner of Starry Night were quick to apologise for the collision showing good sportsmanship.

Skipper of Spirit of Isis, Vicky Blunt explained: “The regatta was going really well and a fantastic performance has been put in by the team who are charter guests of mixed sailing ability. We were looking forward to another good race vying for a podium position. Whilst we were on starboard tack there was an unfortunate incident involving Starry Night which came at us on port tack, ending our regatta in dramatic fashion. Thankfully everyone on board responded well and rallied together to bring the boat and crew safely back alongside. Many thanks to ABSAR and the Coastguard for their speedy response and assistance in this incident.”

In CSA 1B, Geoff Hill’s Santa Cruz 72 yacht Antipodes had a cracking day on the water, scoring two bullets to pull the Australian yacht up to within one point of overall division leader, Peter Harrison’s Farr 115 charter yacht Sojana. Both of today’s races were on tight courses with plenty of traffic from other yachts. Although Sojana got a great start to the first race of the day, the magnificent ketch chose to stay offshore to avoid tacking through the congested waters in shore but this made for more current and less breeze offshore. Also in the first race of the day, Jan Rupert’s Tripp 75 yacht Blackbird had a problem on their first spinnaker hoist, as the chute’s bag became entangled in the clew. A crewmember was put into a harness and a spectacular ‘zip wire’ retrieval was caught on camera by the Antigua Sailing Week video team. The second race start did not go well for Blackbird and Sojana, Antipodes expertly shut out both yachts at the pin end. However, two outstanding protests between Antipodes and Sojana needed to be settled after today’s racing and both were dismissed. Tomorrow’s last race looks set to be an absolute cracker.

In CSA 2, both races were won by Ulrich Rohde’s Swan 53 yacht Dragon Fly Plus, but only just. In the fifth race of the series, Chris Brand’s Swan 53 yacht Merel Four took line honours but could only watch with despair as Dragon Fly Plus came through the line 21 seconds later to take the win on corrected time. Andy Middleton’s First 47.7 yacht Global Yacht Racing was extremely fast downwind today, to take third place in Race 5. The last race of the day was an even closer affair with Ross Applebey’s, Oyster 48 sailing yacht Scarlet Oyster just missing out on a win. Christian Reynolds’ Swan 51 yacht Northern Child got an excellent start to the last race hitting the line with full pace to take third.

In CSA 3, Richard Wesslund’s J/120 yacht El Ocaso kept up its perfect score line with two more bullets, to make it six straight wins (will it be lucky seven tomorrow?). However, the two First 40s in the class were just seconds behind Wesslund’s Florida based team. Nick Burns’ Royal Hong Kong YC team racing Lancelot II had to retire yesterday due to a spinnaker pole problem but came back to take a second in the first race today and move up to third overall. Mario Martinez’s Smile and Wave was second overall but just one point ahead of Lancelot II. Don Payan’s Farr 40 Rigel was forced out at the pin end in the last race of the day, resulting in the team from USA dropping to fourth overall.

Antigua Sailing Week 2012

In CSA 4, Calvin Reed’s First 40.7 yacht Elandra won both of today’s races but this is a very competitive class and the first race of the day saw Elandra get pinned out at the start by Patrick Holloran’s First 40.7 yacht Caipirinha. Holloran’s team was very aggressive on the start line today and in the last race of the day, Caipirinha forced Sir Hugh Bailey’s Beneteau 456 sailing yacht Hugo B into a premature start. Hugo B had a long way to go back to restart but the local Antiguan boat staged a sensational comeback, to take second place by just 5 seconds on corrected time. The last race of the day also saw a rare tie. After time correction, Jonty Layfield’s J/39 yacht Sleeper and Carlo Falcone’s Caccia alla Volpe could not be separated and were both awarded third place. Caccia alla Volpe also completed the last race having badly torn its headsail just after the start. Elandra has won the class with a race to spare and Hugo B is assured of second overall but Caccia alla Volpe and Sleeper are tied for third place overall and tomorrow’s last race will decide the last podium position.

It looks like it is going to the wire in CSA 5. Stephen Carson’s Dehler 34 yacht Hightide scored bullets in both of today’s races just ahead of Geoffrey Pidduck’s Six Metre sailing yacht Biwi Magic which is currently just a single point ahead overall. However, tomorrow’s scheduled race will mean a discard kicks in. Effectively, these two local yachts will decide the winner of the class on the last day of the regatta – expect sparks to fly tomorrow! Tanner Jones’ J/30 Blue Peter had another consistent day to hold off the challenge for third overall from Rick Gormley’s First 38 yacht Elethea.

In CSA 6, David Chatterton’s Jeanneau 49 yacht Resting Goose has won the class with a race to spare scoring their fifth consecutive win of the regatta. Eduardo Lentz’s Sun Odyssey 44 yacht Voilactus was second in today’s race and lies second overall. Vincent White’s O’Day 35 yacht Seal is on the same points as Vollactus and lies third.

In the Bareboat Class, the titanic struggle between three German yachts from KH+P continues. The Race Committee elected to send the Bareboats on a long 3-hour course offshore to Standfast. Horst Schulze, Sea You Later leads the class overall and won today’s race by just 34 seconds from Alexander Pfeiffer’s L’Oiseau des Iles. Andreas Kadelbach’s Cayenne was third. All three of these yachts have occupied the top three places so far in the six race series.

Tomorrow is the last day of Antigua Sailing Week and the last race will decide many of the class titles, however the weather forecast for tomorrow is looking light, which should make for some very tricky conditions. This has been an action-packed Antigua Sailing Week but you never know, tomorrow might just top the lot! The Volvo Ocean Race fleet is due to pass Antigua tomorrow and maybe, just maybe, the Volvo 70s may pop in to see what’s going on!

Antigua Sailing Week 2012: Ondeck Thank Local Antiguan Search & Rescue Teams

May 03, 2012

Day 4 of Antigua Sailing Week 2012 saw a collision in the morning between Ondeck’s Farr 65 sailing yacht Spirit of Isis and the Oyster 82 superyacht Starry Night of the Caribbean.

Peter Anthony, Chairman of Ondeck commented: “During the first race today one of our yachts, Spirit of Isis, was involved in a port and starboard incident with Oyster 82, Starry Night that caused serious damage to our Farr 65 and put an end to its continuation in the regatta. I would like to thank Antigua & Barbuda Search & Rescue (ABSAR) and Antigua Coastguard, as well as a boat from the Antigua Sailing Week Organising Committee, for their swift response and assistance. Luckily only very minor injuries were sustained that were treated by the ABSAR crew ashore. Once safely on the dock, the skipper and owner of Starry Night were quick to apologise for the collision showing good sport.”

Skipper of Isis, Vicky Blunt explained:” The regatta was going really well and a fantastic performance has been put in by the team who are mainly charter guests. We were looking forward to another good race vying for a podium position and were climbing steadily through the fleet tacking our way to the windward mark. Whilst we were on starboard tack there was an unfortunate incident involving Starry Night who came at us on port tack, ending our race in dramatic fashion. Thankfully everyone on board responded well and rallied together to bring the boat and crew safely back alongside. Many thanks to ABSAR and the Coastguard for their speedy response and assistance in this incident.”

Other Ondeck charter guests racing on Beneteau First 40.7s and First 40s continue to have a fantastic regatta thanks to the hard working Ondeck team. Following day one of the regatta the First 40.7 Escaped Aussies had an abrupt end when they had a coming together with Asahi, Dehler 47. The Ondeck team came to the rescue, working through the night to prepare a yacht from their sailing school to make it race ready in time for the 10 o’clock start the following day.

Ondeck are arranging a replacement yacht to enable their transatlantic charter guests to sail from Antigua to Portsmouth, UK as planned on Thursday, 10th May. Their event known as the Atlantic Challenge occurs annually following Antigua Sailing Week.

The upcoming awards are sure to generate plenty of buzz, both in leisure marine media and in regional business media as well. The Asia Boating Awards, now in its eighth year, is the region’s most established and respected event of its kind.

This year sees awards in 19 categories, showcasing Asian builders and international brands, as well as Asian regattas, marinas and yacht designers working in Asia. The pioneering Asia Boating Awards was the first event to recognise the efforts and successes of Asian yacht builders.

This year’s lists of nominees are all very well-known and have generated plenty of press over the past year. It will be a very interesting night indeed,” said Ryan Swift, editor of Asia-Pacific Boating magazine.

The Asia Boating Awards will take place on May 10, just one day prior to the start of the Hong Kong Gold Coast Boat Show at the Hong Kong Gold Coast Yacht and Country Club.

The list of nominees comes from online polling of Asia-Pacific Boating readers, with final winners being determined by a panel of judges that have been selected for their ability to make informed, impartial decisions. The awards ceremony is organised by Blu Inc Media, publisher of Asia-Pacific Boating and its Chinese-language sister publication, China Boating.
