June 20, 2010

Moonen Shipyards have assigned a new Superyacht project Moonen 133 to Rene Van Der Velden Yacht. The long range cruiser Moonen 133 is the largest super yacht Moonen Shipyards has ever endeavoured to create for a private client. The luxury motor yacht will feature a wide range of amenities and toys, which are likely to be more than most of its counterparts and even the larger yachts.

The new Moonen 133 - Moonen Yachts

Motor yacht Moonen 133 will offer two full tenders and three separate jet skis. It will also boast a submarine on the aft platform. The Superyacht Moonen 13 will feature a luxury owner’s suite, plus 4 guests staterooms below deck. It will also feature a gymnasium that can be modified into an extra guest cabin if required. The Superyacht Moonen 133 will be able accommodate around twelve guests if utilising the gymnasium. The company currently holds a strong clientele due to its excellent standards and is increasingly becoming admired in the yacht industry. With a principle of “quality pays off,” the Rene Van Der Velden Yacht design team is proving to be one of the most popular yacht designers to date.  The Moonen 133, the full bodied long range cruiser is a vessel which promises to offer more services than a regular super yacht.

At a time when the industry is feeling the pressure of the economic downturn, the company is extremely busy with various interesting contracts. Several private clients and shipyards have made genuine inquiries for their services.

Moonen Shipyards which is based in The Netherlands has signed a number of contracts recently including the contract for its largest superyacht to date, the superyacht Moonen 133. Engineering has already started on the impressive Moonen 133 yacht newbuild which was ordered by a repeat client yacht owner who has already owned a Moonen 84 and a Moonen 97.

Very interestingly the Moonen 1333 superyacht is to carry a submarine. When launched in 2012 this will be the smallest luxury motor yacht ever to carry a submarine – for 2 persons and 100 metres depth.

Pendennis Yachts UK Hosts Yacht Designer Ron Holland Presentation

June 17, 2010

On Thursday 10th June Falmouth based superyacht builder and refitter Pendennis, was delighted to host a presentation by the internationally renowned yacht designer Ron Holland.

After designing his first boat over 40 years ago in New Zealand, Ron’s enthusiasm for sailing combined with a natural technical understanding has enabled his career to flourish over the years, making him one of the world’s most sought after and respected yacht designers.

The talk, held in Pendennis’ Marine Skills Centre, was a fascinating overview of the broad range of vessels that he has been involved with, most famously Mirabella V the world’s largest ever single-masted yacht at just over 75m. Ron has been involved in several new builds at Pendennis, the latest being ‘Christopher’ a 46m performance cruising ketch which is due to be launched later this year. Construction is well underway on this impressive vessel, the layout of which will contain three staterooms and a study, providing the owners and their guests with accommodation for up to 12, with a further four cabins sleeping eight crew.

Ron Holland

Inspiring for employees of Pendennis and visitors alike the presentation was a refreshing insight into a career in yacht design that developed not from courses or official training but from a passion for sailing that stems back to childhood. Now this passion continues as he creates vessels that are a clever balance of classic design and modern technology, always focused on balancing performance with client needs and vision.

The evening raised money for the RNLI, which Ron has supported throughout his career in the marine industry. Due to the success of the event Pendennis is also planning another talk by Ron Holland at the Falmouth Poly later this year.

Ron Holland’s career began after he designed the ¼ tonner Eygthene, which won its first race the 1973 ¼ ton Cup. This success led to a commission to design a One-ton class yacht for Irish businessman Hugh Coveney, enabling Ron set up as an independent designer in Kinsale, Co. Cork, where he has been based ever since.

Pendennis has one of the world’s leading custom superyacht build and refit facilities. Building on hundreds of years of local maritime heritage, Pendennis has become one of Cornwall’s most important employers – with 350 highly skilled trades people based at their 6.5 acre prime water front location in Falmouth, UK.  Recent infrastructure developments at the yard have seen their outer 75m dry dock completely enclosed and the addition of a 55m (L) x 17m (H) x 16m (W) covered tented space on hard standing in the centre of the yard. Both bring additional flexible undercover space for Pendennis to develop both new build and refit contracts.

Alloy Yachts launch Sailing yacht Imagine II

June 17, 2010

On Tuesday the 15th of June, Alloy Yachts christened the 44.2m sailing yacht Imagine.

This is the second Dubois designed Imagine Alloy Yachts has created, having built the first Imagine back in 1993. The team of Dubois Naval Architects and Alloy Yachts, working with the owner has created a high performance, superyacht with the technical sailing attributes of a much smaller racing machine. The desire to recapture the essence of the original Imagine with low, sleek lines and a large cockpit was kept but enhanced by all the advancements in the technologies Alloy Yachts has made since the first Imagine was launched.

This new sailing yacht Imagine will be outperforming her peers on the water whilst giving her owner new levels of comfort and entertainment when living onboard.

Alloy superyacht IMAGINE

Imagine was floated to Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour, the following day her Southern Spars carbon fibre mast was stepped. She will begin on-the-water commissioning early next week.

Imagine I, launched in 1993 and designed by Dubois, was a landmark yacht for the Alloy group. Imagine changed a lot of things for both Dubois and Alloy, as both the companies received global recognition after its launch. Alloy yachts made Imagine I, the very first yacht for a non-New Zealand owner. Word spread about the magnificence of the yacht and since then there was no looking back for both Dubois and Alloy.

Imagine I was an extremely successful yacht with its magnificent design, amazing speed and unimaginable luxury. An absolute seaworthy yacht, Imagine was innovative in both interior and exterior aspects. It also won 1994 Nioulargue regatta along with many other trophies and received accolades wherever it went. The yacht has sailed almost all corners of the world.

Imagine II is somewhat an upgraded version of Imagine I. The yacht is a bit longer at 44 meters and is advanced in various aspects such as hull form, keel and rig design, performance and interior layout. However, it is the yacht’s style that connects it back to her forebear. With a gap of 17 years between the two sister yachts, Imagine II is sure to deliver equal extravaganza and delight that her forebear delivered.

Sailing yacht Imagine

Additional Information on Imagine II

Imagine II sailing yacht has a beam of 9.38m (30.8ft) with a displacement of 260 tonnes. 92-metre superyacht concept Sahodara by Jorge Jabor Pinheiro

June 16, 2010

Jorge Jabor Pinheiro has designed a 92m superyacht concept called Sahodara with a rotating owner’s deck. The concept incorporates the existing design format seen in land architecture such as a rotating restaurant like the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington, built for the 1962 World’s Fair.

92-metre superyacht concept Sahodara

Superyacht concept Sahodara

The 94m Superyacht concept Sahodara will enable 2 master cabins on the owner’s deck to receive the same forward facing panoramic views when rotated. The design concept has taken into consideration that not all yachts are owned by one person or couple. The Sahodara will enable two owners who have an equal stake in the use and ownership of the vessel to each have a private and custom designed suite at each end of the deck that can rotate and face forward for the best views while they are onboard.

“It is mainly a wish of the two owner’s that each room is capable of having a forward view of the ocean while on board,” explains Pinheiro. “Besides, the rotation gives the whole yacht two different profiles, making it a very intriguing feature.”

The top deck would only turn in one direction to complete the 180-degree swivel and the operation could only be achieved when docked or travelling at low speeds. “I should probably add that it’s not a 360-degree rotation device, it only rotates to about 200-something degrees and back.” noted Pinheiro.

92-metre superyacht concept Sahodara

Motoryacht concept Sahodara

The exterior design of the yacht is asymmetric and was inspired by looking at layered architecture and topography models with the aim of creating a ripple-like effect when seen from a birds-eye view.

The 94m Superyacht concept Sahodara would have a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and would be able to accommodate 12 guests with a crew of 27.

Diesel-electric engines and azimuthing propulsion pods, would power the vessel, helping to reduce the amount of GHG emissions and maximise manoeuvrability. With two Rolls-Royce Mermaid engines it is thought that Sahodara may be able to attain a maximum speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots.
