Heesen presents new FDHF superyacht range at ‘The future is now’ press conference

September 19, 2012

Heesen Yachts have presented their new FDHF superyacht range to the yachting community at ‘The future is now’ press conference in the in the Principality of Monaco. The new Heesen range ‘The future is now’ was presented on September 19, 2012 at the Yacht Club de Monaco by Heesen directors Fabio Ermetto and Hans Boerakker, together with Piet and Perry van Oossanen from Van Oossanen Naval Architects and Frank Laupman from Omega Architects.

Fabio Ermetto, Director of Sales and Marketing said: “Heesen is moving in a new direction. In fact, four new directions. And in doing so, we want to ensure that different means better. Our four concepts have advantages over every other yacht built at their size: 65, 55, 45 and 42 metres. New considerations are becoming a priority and innovative technology is required. Working with the most radical thinkers, these four yacht forms were developed to overcome seemingly opposing attributes: to go faster but use less fuel, to increase range and speed, to increase performance but reduce environmental impact, to enable uncompromised interior design without compromising performance.”

The 65m FDHF Project Omnia was presented in 2010 at the YCM and – right after – it was sold to a Heesen repeat client. Researched by the world’s leading maritime engineers, the 65’s revolutionary fast displacement hull is the most efficient yet tested. This yacht has the highest power to weight ratio of any comparable yacht. Efficiency is the most important element for yachts of the future, for the very simple reason that it delivers something utterly remarkable: higher performance and lower running costs. The delivery of the largest Heesen to date, the 65m Heesen FDHF superyacht project Omnia is slated for June 2013.

The 55m FDHF motor yacht by Heesen is the world’s first steel yacht over 50 metres with a fast displacement hull. She is the most fuel efficient yacht of her size and style available on the market. With an impressive sundeck of 110 square metres and a forward touch-and-go helipad of 70 square metres, she offers a wide range of choices in her layout.

The 55m FDHF motor yacht by Heesen

The 55m FDHF motor yacht by Heesen

The Heesen 45m superyacht is the only big sports yacht built in Holland, boasting Dutch quality, an aluminium hull and power that can deliver 30 knots. A staggering feat of naval architecture: 40 metres of deck space, 30 metres of interior space in a yacht of 45 metres overall. The Heesen 45m is the perfect combination of both power and style.

The Heesen 42m FDHF yacht equipped with Hull Vane® is the most dramatic advance in yachting: The first yacht that harnesses waves to produce power. Thanks to a special underwater wing developed by Van Oossanen Naval Architects, her efficiency is increased by an astonishing 35 per cent for speeds up to 15,9 knots. Cruising speed fuel consumption is reduced by 30 per cent and she has a 4.000 mile range – the longest of any 40 metre yacht. Reduced emissions means reduced environmental impact. The first Heesen 42m with Hull Vane® was sold last May and is due for delivery in 2014.

The presentation of the three new models and the update on the revolutionary 65m FDHF shows that Heesen is a shipyard that is in continuous quest for smarter innovation: forward thinking for a better future in yachting.

Heesen’s order book consists of 10 yachts currently in commission with deliveries that run until 2015, 60 per cent of which are made out of aluminium, confirming that construction with this noble metal continues to represent the core business of this Dutch shipyard

CRN Navetta 43 yacht LADY TRUDY wins Best Interior Award at the World Yacht Trophy 2012

September 19, 2012

The 43 metre CRN Navetta 43 superyacht Lady Trudy has been awarded the prestigious ‘Best Interior Award’ as part of World Yacht Trophy 2012, organized by the French editorial group LuxmediaGroup. The prize was awarded at the end of Festival de la Plaisance in Cannes which ran from the 11-16th September 2012. The interior design award for motor yacht Lady Trudy confirms the high quality of the boats produced at the Ancona shipyard by CRN Yachts, a brand of the Ferretti Group.  The CRN Group participated in the 2012 edition of Festival de la Plaisance exhibiting another one of its jewels – the 43 metre CRN Navetta 43 charter yacht SOFICO.

The LADY TRUDY motor yacht boasts a harmonious fusion of Made in Italy elegance and touches of the American colonial atmosphere, “Lady Trudy” is a composite displacement yacht with four decks that can comfortably host 10 guests in four VIP cabins and a master suite, with 9 crew members. The LADY TRUDY yacht was designed by the CRN Technical Office, while the external profile and the internal layout was produced by the experts at Studio Zuccon International Project, who worked in synergy with the Centro Stile CRN.

M/Y LADY TRUDY features an elegant grey pearl hull with all the typical distinctive features of the CRN yachts including a large sun deck, a fitness area on the lower deck overlooking the sea and a terrace in the master suite, furnished as a “balcony” with a coffee table and armchairs which can be used at breakfast as well as during sailing.

Among the other features of superyacht Lady Trudy, it is worth noting the elegantly furnished interiors which have given the ship its name: a plunge into the American atmosphere, with “Hampton style” romantic touches. Additionally, each one of the four guest cabins features a dominant colour linked to an American part of the North Atlantic coast: “Newport”, the starboard aft VIP cabin predominantly yellow; “Cape Cod” aft on the right where the predominant colour is green; “Mystic” at the bow on the left, with twin beds and a pull out bed, where red predominates and “Nantucket” aft on the left, where the main colour is blue.

Vitters sailing yacht Aglaia with sail art by Magne Furuholmen

September 19, 2012

The Vitters superyacht Aglaia started off her second Mediterranean season with a spectacular novelty:  Her Code 1 sail which measures around 3,600m2 features  artwork by Norwegian artist Magne Furuholmen. This extraordinary price of art is the largest artwork on canvas in the world. The owner of yacht Aglaia had a series of Furuholmen pieces on board and after christening her, chose to make his art a more integral part of the yacht design by putting his work on her sail.

Aglaia is a spectacular 66m sloop-rigged aluminium sailing yacht built by Vitters with a low superstructure and a clean deck.  Yacht Aglaia’s rig is all carbon with EC6 rigging and gives a sail area to displacement ratio equivalent to a racing yacht. This Dubois design breaks new grounds in several areas – not just the length of this sloop but in the design and all the engineering, innovation, technique and craftsmanship coming together.

The performance sloop Aglaia’s design brief asked for an all-weather performance sailer with sleek and clean lines. In addition, requirements were stated for sailing, steering and manoeuvrability. With the motto to develop a 60m+ yacht that sails like a dinghy, the design team set specific targets like hoisting the main sail in less than two minutes and tacking the boat within 30 seconds. The 83m carbon mast one of the tallest in the world and is the largest ever produced by Southern Spars and had to be transported to The Netherlands in two pieces. The three-dimensionally curved glass in the deckhouse has a spectacular light effect and gives undistorted panoramic views.

For performance reasons, the Owner and Naval Architect Dubois chose to avoid a double headstay. The size and weight of the Staysail and Code 1 implied difficult manual handling. This challenged them to develop an innovative storage system on two drums in the forepeak. In addition, they designed an inline furler for the Staysail. This new type of furler significantly increases safety of the crew by completely avoiding manual handling for large sail hoisting and setting.

Vitters Sailing yacht Aglaia with sail art by Magne Furuholmen

While designing yacht Alaia’s magnificent sail artwork, Magne Furuholmen took a modern approach to portrait paintings of 100 years ago. The sail artwork is his interpretation of a history that has a connection to the context in which the work was going to be placed and a connection to that person who he was portraying.

The new artwork on the Aglaia yachts sail by Norwegian artist Magne Furuholmen includes letters from the names of the owner’s family. He began with the Christian names of the owner’s family, with letters becoming a ‘personal alphabet’ to generate words. With these he created an abstract narrative (in the orange sections) – a family portrait in text.

The final version of Aglaia’s sail was produced by the expert sail painters Harris Sailpainting, in Majorca.

2012 International Design Awards Finalists announced by ISS

September 14, 2012

The 2012 International Design Awards list of finalists has been made public today, by the ISS (International Superyacht Society). It has been over twenty years that ISS’s Design Awards, based completely on peer review, is celebrating the very best of naval architecture, interior, design, engineering and construction that the superyacht industry presents each year.

The event is made possible by the steadfast support of Gala and Awards of Distinction Sponsors. This year, this exceptional group of companies includes Burger Boat Company, Lürssen, nanoICE, Oceanco, Robb Report, Westrec and Wright Maritime Group. A dedicated group of volunteers from many of the industry’s finest companies work year-round on the development of the theme, enhancements to the program and to ensuring an elegant evening.

Each year, nominees are submitted to ISS by the large yacht industry’s leading builders, designers and stewards. The categories are as follows:

Power: (3) awards for size categories 24m-40m, 40m-65m, 65m+

Sail: (2) awards for size categories 24m-40m, 40m+

Interior Design: (1) award for power or sail

Best Refit: (1) award for power or sail

The selection of finalists in each award grouping results from the privilege to vote that ISS membership affords. A distinguished and impartial group of judges then weighs the qualifications of each yacht with the winning yachts announced at ISS’s annual International Design Awards Gala, this year on Thursday, 25 October from 7:00 P.M. at the Marriott Harbor Beach Resort, Fort Lauderdale. The theme celebrates World Adventures!

ISS also recognizes achievement in the business and service of superyachts. During the Gala, ISS Awards of Distinction—Business or Business Person of the Year, Innovation, the ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award as well as the Leadership Award and Distinguished Crew Award—are presented.

The ISS Business (Person) of the Year is awarded to those demonstrating excellence in their area of superyacht expertise within the previous year; nominations come from both the industry and the ISS board with the board making the finalist selections. Previous honourees have included Dick Boon, Vripack, Frans Heesen, Heesen Yachts, John Dane, Trinity Yachts and Corporation of Trinity House.

Open to every aspect of the industry—from crew training to technological advances—the Excellence in Innovation award is given to an individual or business that has demonstrated innovation in their endeavours. Nominations come from the industry and ISS board members vote to determine finalists. In 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 respectively, Agrimond, Carlisle and Finch, the Sailing Yacht Soliloquy by Callender Designs and Gary Markel, Operation Cruise, were awarded the Excellence in Innovation honour.

The new ISS Fabien Cousteau Blue Award, first introduced at the 2010 Awards Gala, celebrates stewardship of marine ecosystems. Environmental leadership, global oceanic conservation and resource preservation are prerequisites for nomination. The integration of environmental technologies and resource management with the goal of setting achievable standards and models for wide adaptation in the design, engineering and building of large yachts—and the use of the Earth’s waterways—are essential criteria. Nominations are made by owners and the yachting industry; selection is by panel of judges, including Mr. Cousteau. The 2011 winner was Yacht Carbon Offset.

ISS’s Leadership Award recognizes an individual or business whose distinctive work and commitment to the industry has contributed—over a substantial period of time—to the sustainable growth of the superyacht community worldwide. Nominations and selection for The Leadership Award are made by those who have received the award in previous years with the previous year’s winner presiding.

The Distinguished Crew Award is presented in years when the DCA award judges are presented with a nomination that represents the essence of the award (nominations are sought industry-wide). Specifically, these honours are designed to recognize yacht crew whose distinguished acts of service best exemplify the standards to which professional yacht crew aspire.
