ECOsuperacht joins Antibes Yacht Show as Carbon Neutral partner

March 14, 2011

For the third year, Antibes Yacht Show is proud to offset the 2011 show’s CO2. ECOsuperyacht will work with the 2011 Antibes Yacht Show as their Carbon Neutral partner. Not only will they be offsetting CO2 emissions from the Show’s site in Port Vauban, but they will also be offsetting CO2 emissions from the 12,000 visitors from all over the World who are expected to attend the Show this year.

ECOsuperyacht will carbon offset 500 tonnes of CO2 emissions on behalf of the Show this year. Of these emissions, approximately 25% will be generated by the Show itself, whilst the other 75% will be generated by visitors travelling to the Show. Antibes Yacht Show prides itself on minimizing the Show’s environmental impact, and is delighted to be working with ECOsuperyacht to offset the Show’s CO2 emissions, again making the event 100% Carbon Neutral.

This is the first year that the Show has worked with ECOsuperyacht. The company provides energy and emissions management services for superyachts. They work with captains and owners to reduce fuel consumption by up to 15%, without any loss of performance. As part of its programme, some of the cost savings achieved are then re-invested in carbon offsetting, making your yacht 100% carbon neutral whilst delivering significant reductions in annual running costs. ECOsuperyacht are so confident about the efficiency gains available that if the savings produced don’t cover the cost of the carbon offsets, they’ll meet the difference. 70 Sunreef Power Catamaran JAMBO breaks records in fuel economy

March 12, 2011
The 70 ft Power catamaran JAMBO is a rare example of a luxury medium-sized power yacht (60-80 feet) with extremely high fuel efficiency, trans-Pacific range and top speeds reaching 20+ knots.

Power catamaran JAMBO in Tahiti

This exceptional yacht was conceived by Sunreef Yachts with the help and advice from Laurent Bourgnon, a famous sailor with a wealth of experience in catamaran regattas. His expertise has been invaluable in the design of the first Sunreef power yacht. All other semi-custom yachts from the Sunreef power line have maintained the same hydrodynamic and performance-oriented line of the 70 footer.

Power catamaran JAMBO - Tahiti Reef

The luxury expedition catamaran JAMBO was designed to undertake round-the-world trip in the most comfortable conditions and using the lowest amount of fuel possible. The yacht is currently cruising around Raiatea, French Polynesia, where the Bourgnon family has been settled for a while and enjoys the relaxed local lifestyle.

Sunreef 70 Power catamaran JAMBO

The fuel consumption was originally 13 litres/ hour/ engine at 10 knots at 2,300 RPM. Following structural and technical modifications made by Sunreef Yachts (installation of water bulbs of 5.5m, and additional aft swimming platforms, increasing the JAMBO’s LOA to 85feet) and other companies (remapping of the engines for optimal use, and new sustainable and smooth antifouling), these numbers have been significantly reduced. The consumption now is 7.5 litres/ hour/ engine at 10 knots at 1,500 RPM, or 15 litres /hour!

Power catamaran JAMBO South Pacific

“Thanks to the remapping of the engines, they now generate 420HP (instead of the original 370HP each), increasing the maximum speed to 22 knots. To cruise at a top speed of 22 knots, JAMBO needs 160 litres/ hour for both engines at 3,400 RPM, which is a very good result,” confirms Laurent Bourgnon.

Yacht JAMBO in Tahiti

Power catamaran Jambo can be chartered here.

Example Itinerary/ Budget/ Fuel Consumption/ Range

Port Camargue (South of France) – Puerto Montt (West Coast of Chile):
Distance: 8,500 nautical miles
Time: 1,000 hours (with several stopovers along the way)
Total fuel consumption: 15,000 litres, or 1,000 hours x 15 litres per hour at 10 knots
(Lower consumption on the Atlantic Ocean due to good currents; higher consumption in the Patagonian channels with opposing currents, strong wind and speed reaching 15 knots to reach safe harbour for the night)

Consumption per mile: 15,000 litres divided by 8,474 miles = 1.77 litres per hour
Range at 10 knots with 20,000 litres = 11,300 nautical miles
Budget : 15,000 litres at 0,50 Euros: 7,500 Euros

To continue from Puerto Montt to Raiatea, JAMBO needed only 5,000 litres of the total 20,000 litres of its reserves.

A perfectionist to the last, Laurent is still working on improving JAMBO’s performance and fuel efficiency. He is now working on new propellers, which are far more efficient that the original ones. Another remapping of the engines is also planned. The proposed changes will further increase the top speed, and bring an additional 20% improvement in fuel consumption. All together it makes the 70 Sunreef Power the best yacht for travelling to the most remote places around the world at a reasonable cost while maintaining luxury and maximum safety.

Magnum 100′ motor yacht by Magnum Marine

March 11, 2011

Magnum Marine has introduced a new 30.40-meter Magnum 100′ motor yacht that will become their flagship when launched. The Magnum 100′ offers different seating, dining and viewing areas, with an expandable top providing a variety of movable shaded areas. The reception and salon areas will be spacious and comfortable with clean modern lines.  The interior spaces of the Magnum Marine 100’ will be custom designed for individual owners and features accommodation for up to 8 guests in four large double staterooms with private ensuite.

Technologically designed by Magnum to be eco friendly, the yacht employs weight saving techniques through the use of stronger and lighter materials. The vessel is built in advanced composite foams and carbon fiber, which allows critical HP to weight ratios to be met with lower power, saving more than 20% in weight compared to similar models. The material also makes the vessels’ structure more rigid and more efficient.

The Magnum 100 yacht will also feature surface drives providing less drag which not only reduces fuel consumption but also increase top speed (which is estimated at 48-55knots!). At slower speeds, the motor yacht Magnum 100’ will have an electric “harbor” drive: This is an electric wing engine for slow speed operation, which runs virtually silent and smoke free.

The Magnum designed Interior LED and fluorescent lighting will increase efficiency and decrease interior heat load.

The new Magnum 100′ model motor yacht by Magnum Marine will be Magnum’s largest yacht and is expected to be delivered by 2012.

Mochi Craft Long Range 23 features distinctive innovations, such as the exclusive Ferretti Group patent: “Zero Emission Mode” hybrid propulsion system and FER.WEY (Ferretti Wave Efficient Yacht) trans-planing hull. These two technologies combine and enhance each other in a craft that offers revolutionary design concepts. Thanks to these solutions, Long Range 23 is today the only boat that has obtained the RINA “Green Star Clean Energy and Clean Propulsion” certification, the most rigorous certification standard that can be assigned to a pleasure craft.

The award, created by the Union Internationale Motonautique, acknowledges the commitment of companies, organizations, universities, research centres or individuals that have inspired excellence in innovation, development and application of environmental friendly technologies. In particular UIM awarded “the research and development carried out by the AYT – Ferretti Group for the successful production of the long range navigation Mochi Craft motor yacht. Mochi Craft Long Range 23 is a first-class example of environmental friendly motor yacht with focus on reduction of consumption, emissions and noise. Scrupulous fluid dynamics studies were carried out both through internal Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) system and with models tested in the naval towing tank at Potsdam (Germany). These studies resulted into reduction of resistance and friction/attrition to movement mainly due to the hull. Several test demonstrated that the Mochi Craft Long Range 23 consumed, at the same speed (i.e. 12 knots), half than comparable motor yachts. It is also equipped with ”parallel hybrid propulsion”, diesel and electric system that permit to the motor yacht to navigate at low or zero emission and allow the navigation even in severely protected marine areas.”

We are extremely proud to receive this prestigious award for Mochi Craft Long Range 23 - commented Norberto Ferretti, Chairman and Founder of Ferretti Groupa substantial demonstration of Ferretti Group’s commitment to the environment, an issue we are passionately dedicated to, investing in research and development. “

Salvatore Basile, Ferretti Group CEO, commented: the UIM Environmental Award is a further, important achievement for Ferretti Group, that acknowledges and emphasizes our passion for innovation and our significant influence on the international nautical world.”

 Stability And Performance

The innovative FER.WEY hull, which already offers great stability, is complemented by the Mitsubishi ARG, Anti Rolling Gyro System – worldwide exclusive to Ferretti – which cuts roll caused by wave motion at anchor or under way by up to 50%, and stabilising fins, both mounted as standard.

The Long Range 23 is available with two latest-generation MAN Common Rail power options – 500hp and 800hp version. The 800hp engines provide a cruising speed of 13 knots and top speed of 15 knots.

THE FER.WEY (FERRETTI WAVE EFFICIENT YACHT) HULL

The FER.WEY (Ferretti Wave Efficient Yacht) hull, the result of years of research and development by AYT, is an innovative type of hull, described as ‘transplaning’, which enables owners to cruise with great comfort and efficiency in the intermediate speed range where both planing and displacement hulls generally behave in an abnormal way. At the same time the hull greatly reduces the rolling effect and guarantees low aft wave turbulence.

The FER.WEY transplaning hull allows this craft – tested by Ferretti in the Potsdam naval test tank after studies at the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) – to pass the 15 – 16 knot level gradually with a perfectly horizontal attitude, reaching 20 knots. A craft of this size would normally enter the planing hump at around 13 – 14 knots, already assuming a stern-down attitude at 12 knots. What’s more, in contrast to a classic displacement hull, where resistance rises dramatically with the longitudinal attitude when nearing critical speed, the FER.WEY hull’s resistance rises less drastically as speed increases. Another significant feature is that this hull doesn’t reach a definite ‘hump speed’, a performance need experienced by planing craft.

As a result, the FER.WEY hull offers owners:

• A stable longitudinal attitude, allowing owners to move around the craft in comfort, experiencing no marked change in attitude as speed varies.

• Maximum cruising efficiency up to 15 knots, a feature provided by the action of the prominent bow bulb, which cuts wave drag on the hull.

• Significant reduction in rolling.

Finally, the special shape of the FER.WEY hull allows the craft to rest on the sea bottom while protecting the propellers from impact damage, and allows owners to access areas that would be a risky proposition for other types of hull.

THE “ZEM” (ZERO EMISSION MODE) HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM

The innovative hybrid propulsion combines the reliability of the traditional diesel, which when selected transmits power directly to the propellers, with the ability to cruise in ‘Zero Emission Mode’, driven by two 70 kW synchronous electric motors applied in series to the propeller shaft and engaging with the reduction gears. The motors are powered by a pack of Lithium ion batteries, the most advanced technology in this field.

Exclusive Ferretti patent it can operate in 5 different modes:

1) DIESEL PROPULSION AND ENERGY STORING: The diesel engines, as well as handling normal propulsion, operate the electric motors. In this way they work as generators, rapidly recharging the propulsion battery pack.

2) DIESEL-ELECTRIC: The electric motors, disengaged from the diesel, drive the propellers and are powered by the on board generators and the propulsion battery pack.

3) ZEM Propulsion: The propellers are powered by the electric motors, disengaged from the diesel and operated exclusively by the propulsion battery pack, providing totally silent, zero emission operations.

 4) ZEM Function: All the on-board utilities are powered by the propulsion battery pack, including air conditioning, boiler and ARG, enabling totally silent, zero emission functioning of the boat.

Modes 3 and 4, for example, allow owners to enjoy the exclusive, unique experience of entering a bay, lying at anchor for several hours with full on-board functionality, then leaving, secure in the knowledge that the entire operation has been carried out in total silence and with zero emissions. In this way the yacht has no negative impact on the local environment.

 5) PLUG-IN: During stays in port the propulsion battery pack is charged through a dedicated shore power connection.

All these modes are easily managed through a specially developed monitoring system. Touch screen selection of the various modes of propulsive energy transfer is immediate and intuitive.

This new technology, also made possible through significant international collaborations, marks a concrete step forward by the nautical industry towards greater respect for the environment, an objective that Ferretti is working towards through its constant commitment to research and development.

Marina Barcelona 92’s continued leadership through Yacht Carbon Offset

January 31, 2011

Since 2009, Marina Barcelona 92 (MB´92) has invited superyacht refit clients to join its carbon offset programme, compensating for the carbon emissions produced from their use of shore power.  The shipyard has then matched its clients’ action by carbon offsetting an equivalent quantity of energy itself. MB’92’s optional programme continues to attract participation from leading yachts, and is delivered in partnership with Yacht Carbon Offset.

By the end of 2010, carbon offsets had been certified for over 5 million kWh of electricity – a major part of the total electricity consumption of the shipyard. To give an idea of the quantity of greenhouse gas savings made through this programme, this roughly equates to the carbon emissions of a Jumbo Jet flying from London to Singapore 4.7 times.

When a yacht subscribes, MB´92 includes a small additional amount on the invoice for the yacht’s metered electricity consumption.  Upon the completion of the refit project, the total consumption and yacht details are communicated to Yacht Carbon Offset, and a personalised Certificate is issued for the yacht. MB´92 periodically carbon offsets a further quantity of electricity, matching the total number of kilowatt-hours offset by clients in each period, to compensate for its own office and other yard energy consumption.

Tonne for tonne, the greenhouse gas emissions from yard energy consumption are matched by equivalent greenhouse gas reductions from projects such as renewable power.  Each project depends on the carbon funding, and Yacht Carbon Offset has Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification, so participants know that their action makes a real impact on net emissions.

MB´92 senior project manager and creator of the carbon offset program, Bob Wagemakers, said “It is great to see the level of interest in this project amongst so many of our superyacht clients. The total amount of electricity that was included in our offsets in 2010 was over 80% greater than in 2009. Not only with our carbon offset program, but also in other aspects of the shipyard, such as waste recycling, we see an encouraging trend of awareness amongst those involved in superyacht operation.”

Yacht Carbon Offset’s Managing Director Mark Robinson added: “The carbon footprint from shore power is normally a fraction of the total footprint of the yacht, so MB’92’s initiative is a great way to introduce the concept on board at minimal cost. Captains and managers can then consider the benefits for the Owner (and the modest cost) of extending their offsetting to cover the fuel used on board. Month by month, more large yachts bring in Yacht Carbon Offset as a standard part of their environmental management programme.  We are delighted to be working with MB’92 and thank the whole team, and of course the participating yachts, for their continued support.”

Yacht Carbon Offset

The full capabilities and flexibility of a luxury yacht enable owners and guests to enjoy the world’s most beautiful destinations.  With large and powerful yachts, a significant “carbon footprint” arises, so this can readily be addressed through carbon offsetting.

Yacht Carbon Offset provides a clear, auditable way to balance out the “carbon footprint” of a yacht’s engines and generators, or in this case its use of electricity from the grid.  Tonne for tonne, the yacht’s emissions are matched by equivalent greenhouse gas reductions from projects such as renewable power.  Each carbon saving project depends on the carbon funding, and Yacht Carbon Offset has Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Certification, so participants know that their action makes a real impact on net emissions.

Carbon Offsetting complements the initiatives taken by the Shipyard and by each yacht to improve energy efficiency, since it addresses the impact of the energy that is consumed after all such initiatives have taken effect.  In a world where service excellence requires full flexibility of operation, Carbon Offsetting is a practical way to make a real difference.
