From the moment, forty years ago, when Greenpeace’s’ first campaign to stop a nuclear weapons test in the Aleutian islands set out, Greenpeace has sailed the sea –often in old, rusting, borrowed, or repurposed ships – the new Rainbow Warrior yacht is its first purpose built vessel. Greenpeace ships have helped put activists in front of harpoons to save whales, stopped barrels of toxic and radioactive waste from being dumped at sea, blocked shipments of illegal timber and put an end to nuclear testing. Many of the greatest environmental victories have been won with the support of the Rainbow Warrior and other Greenpeace ships.

Melina Laboucan-Massimo, the Godmother of the new Rainbow Warrior III yacht, quoted the Cree Indian prophecy from which the ship got its name:

“There will come a time when the Earth grows sick and when it does a tribe will gather from all the cultures of the world who believe in deeds and not words. They will work to heal it… they will be known as the ‘Warriors of the Rainbow’.”

The construction of the yacht Rainbow Warrior was paid for by over 100,000 individual donations. Donors were able to sponsor specific parts of the vessel and items of equipment.

The ship will begin life with a thank-you tour of the European coast before making its first ocean crossing to begin active campaigning in the Americas.

Centek to Launch Genset Pollution Control Guide at IBEX 2011

October 12, 2011

Marine wet exhaust systems manufacturer Centek Industries will introduce the Genset Pollution Control Guide at the 2011 International Boatbuilders Exhibition and Conference (IBEX), October 17-19 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville (booth 719).

Centek to Launch Genset Pollution Control Guide at IBEX 2011

Centek to Launch Genset Pollution Control Guide at IBEX 2011

The guide is designed to help boat builders and service yards integrate the company’s Gen-Kleen™ filter system with a generator wet exhaust system to remove hydrocarbon pollution (sheen, soot, unspent gasoline and diesel fuel) from the exhaust cooling water before it is discharged.

Available for marine gensets from 5 kw and up, a Gen-Kleen system separates raw cooling water from exhaust gases. The dry exhaust gases are vented to the atmosphere, the raw cooling water is scrubbed by a filtration system. The filters are impregnated with a patented formula that binds and captures hydrocarbons while allowing clean water to pass through. Clean water is then returned to the environment.

Built to withstand the harsh marine environment, Gen-Kleen systems are available in two models to accommodate different engine room layouts. The Compact Gen-Kleen integrates many of the system components into a single package. The Component Gen-Kleen disperses the components throughout the engine compartment as space allows.

Over 100 Gen-Kleen systems have been installed on boats and yachts worldwide. Centek has also designed and built more than 14,000 custom marine exhaust systems and is the only company to offer fiberglass exhaust components that are Lloyd’s Register Type approved, ABS type approved and meet or exceed ABYC-P1 standards. Centek’s engineering staff has more than 80 years of marine wet exhaust system design and innovation experience.

52m Expedition Yacht SuRi to undergo refit and extension to 63m

October 12, 2011

The 52.43m (172′) expedition motor yacht SuRi is to undergo a full rebuild and extension of 10.9m (36 foot) at Bay Ship and Yacht Co. Located in Alameda, California, Bay Ship and Yacht Co. (BSY) in collaboration with naval architects Kirilloff and Associates of Green Cove springs, Florida, and Jeffrey Botwin of Herringbone Design of Los Angeles, California were awarded the contract to lengthen the shadow support superyacht SuRi by adding a 36 foot mid-body hull and superstructure plug for a new overall length of 63.4m (208 feet)

BSY’s competitive spirit and its ability to perform this type of work with its skilled tradesmen and local vendor support helped win this contract.  The motor yacht SuRi refit will be accomplished using 99% American made products and Subcontractors, thus generating many jobs in the local economy, and is noted to be the largest yacht refit and modification project done in the United States in many years.  All work will be overseen by the Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and San Francisco, California offices of Bureau Veritas, the yacht’s classification society.

The SuRi yacht is an American built hull that was converted in Seattle in 2007/2008 and is owned by an American (California) yachtsman.

Guest enhancements due to the lengthening of the yacht

General Enhancements of superyacht SuRi

Obviously, a larger, longer, and heavier boat will offer enhancements to the guest experience other than the accommodations. With new engines offering more horsepower, quieter running, less environmental impact, the guest experience is also enhanced. The explorer yacht SuRi’s speed will increase because of the added horsepower and will be more fuel efficient. The new generators will also be quieter, have less environment impact and be more fuel efficient. Because there is an increased amount of mass of the yacht in terms of ballast, the ride comfort will also be increased.

Guest Accommodation Enhancements

Sun Deck: The longer and expanded sun deck of shadow support vessel SuRi will offer more square footage, a larger sunning and “in shade” areas and will continue to have the high level of finish currently present on SuRi.

Bridge and Helo Deck: This deck has received the full length of the mid body of 36 feet. All of the added length happen aft of the existing lounge and a spacious fully glass enclosed guest lounge has been added to the already comfortable and elegant main lounge. The new guest lounge on M/Y SuRi can either be closed off in glass, fully climate controlled and become a part of the existing expansive lounge or, by closing the existing lounge aft doors, all of the glass panels can be opened to allow for the breeze to cool guests as they enjoy the luxury of the new lounge amenities.

Mezzanine Guest Cabins: Two additional, full beam guest cabins will be installed on the mezzanine level outfitted in a similar style to the existing cabins which are also being expanded and reconfigured. These four guest cabins allow an unobstructed, private view from the yacht.

Main Deck: The main deck of superyacht SuRi also received the full added length of 36 feet in the hangar allowing for the carriage of even more “toys” and tenders than she currently carries.

Hold Deck: In way of where the 36 foot mid body there are two large rooms that offer guest a fully equipped area on the starboard side for exercise, yoga and for additional lounging and meeting area. This space can also be used as a children’s play area.  On the port side of the new hold guest area is a spacious, relaxing and comfortable media room equipped with the latest television and sound system. Also in this space are the “windows to the sea”. There are two large viewing windows on the SuRi yacht that open to the ocean bottom, lit by high intensity lights that will illuminate the ocean and attract sea life to the guests.

Alewijnse showcases energy efficiency for superyachts at the Monaco yacht Show

September 25, 2011

Alewijnse Marine Systems, the leading superyacht systems integrator, is once again exhibiting at the 2011 Monaco Yacht Show. Alewijnse is a global pioneer in the design and installation of the integrated electrical systems that form the heart of every superyacht. In an age where automation and the need for different systems to communicate and interact with each other are paramount, Alewijnse supplies its knowledge and expertise to yards all over the world.

Alewijnse showcases energy efficiency for superyachts at the Monaco yacht Show

Alewijnse showcases energy efficiency for superyachts at the Monaco yacht Show

At this year’s Monaco Yacht Show Alewijnse is showcasing its ability to design tailor-made electro-technical solutions for superyachts, covering everything from navigation and bridge systems to ICT and entertainment networks, along with the full transmission systems for power, lighting and control. However the company’s strengths extend beyond that with its proven track-record in the identification and adoption of the new technologies that meet the requirements of the most demanding superyacht owners. In this era of oil at over $110 a barrel and ever more stringent environmental regulation, this means working with owners and yards to create superyachts that use less fossil fuels, conserve and recycle what energy they do generate and create as few emissions as possible.

Over the past year Alewijnse has worked with many yards, designers and suppliers as an integral part of each project including leading names such as Amels, Oceanco and Royal Huisman. One notable example in 2011 is the role that the company is playing in a new Oceanco superyacht which will be built under the new PYC (Passenger Yacht Code); a new code for yachts carrying 13-36 passengers and no cargo.

The new code demands a greater level of sophistication in the electrical systems than is demanded on smaller yachts, not least for the fire and safety systems where the vessel has to be divided into several fire zones separated by watertight bulkheads. Alewijnse will also be specifying and installing a specialist public address system along with super-secured watertight cable penetrations.

Visitors to the Alewijnse stand (QD64) will find expert staff on hand to discuss the design, installation and integration of every kind of onboard electrical system. A Lantic Entertainment System will also be on show, running a range of content through mirror TVs especially developed and designed for superyachts. Lantic, which led the way in integrating smart phones into its control systems some years ago, now offers full control via the iPad, iPhone and iPod, as well as any other device capable of accessing a web browser. With full, two-way functionality a Lantic system can now both be accessed and controlled from anywhere onboard via a wireless network. Below is a short video of the new GUI and iPadcontrol  by Lantic Entertainment System.
