Classic Lines with state-of-the-art equipment and manufacturing techniques
Hamburg, September, 2010

The expert team of Blohm + Voss is developing various pre-designed custom
yachts allowing clients to profit from the Blohm + Voss experience in large
yacht newbuild.

Following “B+V 110m/fast” and “B+V 120 MY/X” the next project to be
presented is the 111m (364’) Motor Yacht:

B+V 111 MY/ Vintage

In a history of more than 130 years Blohm + Voss has built well-known Yachts in finest
yacht building quality including legends such as MY SAVARONA.
B+V 111 MY/ Vintage links classical hull lines of yachts of the 1930’s with state of the
art equipment and manufacturing techniques.

The harmonic outer appearance is marked by traditional sheer and continuing deck,
connecting the bow-sprit with the classical shaped cruiser stern.

Characteristic rudimentary features of an important epoch of yacht design are also the
backwards leaned funnels and the sideways arranged air intakes, while the bulbous
bridge wings and the forward deck hoods implement modern design elements.

The yacht provides a helicopter landing deck, 2 large tender bays and 2 on deck spaces
for classical, davit-launched picnic tenders. This arrangement allows for a very
comfortable transfer for Owner and Guests.
ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems

A special design feature is a viewing platform located up in the aft mast to enjoy a
stunning outlook over the yacht and the surrounding scenery. Access to the platform is
via a glazed elevator that allows guests to reach the platform in a very comfortable and
safe way from various decks.

The very spacious exterior deck areas, a swimming pool with glazed side panels and a
large beach club in the aft offer various possibilities for all kind of water sports. Sea
access is either from the sideways beach club platforms or the aft stern ramp.
One entire deck (deck 5) is dedicated to the Owner’s large residential suite in the forward
part which includes a large bedroom, his and her bathroom and respective dressing
areas as well as a private dining room and a private gym. The impressive Owner’s
lounge, facing towards aft, has a direct access to the open pool area.

The 111m Vintage Motor Yacht by Blohm + Voss

One deck below (Main Deck/deck 4), up to 12 Guests can be accommodated in 4 luxury
and 2 VIP guests cabins. Walking through a gallery space the guests reach an indoor
dining area that has a lounge area in the aft and connects to a shady aft deck for al fresco
dining including bar and sitting area.

In order to assure efficient and discreet guest services, Owner and Guests spaces have
been carefully separated from the crew service flow insuring minimum disturbance.
Crew cabins for 25 crew members are located on the Boat Deck (deck 3) including the
crew mess. Crew boarding can be done independently from Owner and Guests through a
dedicated crew entrance on the same deck. Galley and provision storage are on the same
deck allowing for easy access and provisioning. The same applies to the separate access
to the beach club so that preparation and set up work of the beach club and water sports
equipment can be done without disturbance to the Owner and his Guests.

The yacht has been designed for comfortable and reliable worldwide cruising in a
contemporary interpretation on the style of the early yachts of the 1930’s.
Needless to say modern technologies and up to date diesel-mechanical propulsion
system, a fuel capacity for 4.000nm at 14kn service speed and retractable fin stabilizers
will assure today’s expected service and comfort levels.

Les Voiles de Saint Tropez: Record number of Wally sailing yachts to attend.

August 30, 2010

Les Voiles de Saint Tropez 2010 is less than a month away and is already looking to be an exceptional event. In spite of the intentional restriction on the number of participants, the Société Nautique is preparing to play host to nearly 300 traditional and modern competitors, which equates to over 3,500 crew members gathering together in the bay of Saint Tropez for a week of racing and festivities. The year 2010 will be marked by the number fifteen: 15 countries represented, 15 registered Wally sailing yachts, 15 traditional hundred year old sailing yachts on the Var region’s race zone.

Les Voiles de St Tropez 2010

Les Voiles de St Tropez 2010

Modern: a record number of Wally sailing yachts!

Combining exceptional performance, uncluttered design and unique styling, the Wally Yachts still form one of the major attractions of Les Voiles de Saint Tropez. No less than 15 Wally Yachts are registered this year, making it one of the season’s largest gatherings of yachts built by Wally. Several boats launched in 2009 will be tacking about Saint Tropez for the first time: the Wally 80 Sailing yacht Bagheera, the 90ft  luxury sailing yacht Highland Fling and the 100ft superyacht  Indio, to name but a few. The suspense still remains unresolved as regards finding out who will succeed the 2009 winner, the 100ft sloop Y3K. Sail yacht Magic Carpet Squared made a very strong impression by winning this year’s Palmavela in Palma and the Nespresso Cup in Portofino, whilst InK, dio stood out in the Loro Piana races at Porto Cervo.

100ft Wally Sailing yacht INDIO

100ft Wally Sailing yacht INDIO

Among the largest sailing yachts at the Les Voiles de Saint Tropez, including the gigantic masts of the J classes, classic superyacht Shamrock V and classic yacht Velsheda, we will be able to see the highly elegant silhouette of the ketch that holds the Atlantic record under sail, superyacht performance sailing yacht MARI CHA III.

Not as long but just as aesthetically pleasing, the Tofinou 9.50sailing yacht  from the Latitude 46 yard, which blends classic lines with a modern hull, carbon fittings and a teak deck, will be out in force with over 15 participating boats. Such a line-up that will enable them to enjoy a specific ranking and race in elapsed time.

Also much awaited at Les Voiles de St Tropez are sailing yacht Black Bird and Black Legend, two examples of the brand new “code zero” built by the Blackpepper yard in the Arcachon basin with the participation of the renowned sailor Yves Parlier.

Tradition: 15 competing hundred year olds

With the honour going to the old boats, it’s sailing yacht Partridge who will this year steal the thunder from the largest traditional craft by celebrating her 125th birthday with grace and elegance. With her plumb bow, her massive bowsprit and her beautiful extended counter stern, the classic beauty Partridge is a small copy of the historic yacht Galatea, the English America’s Cup challenger in 1886. Recovered from a mud berth, her restoration took nearly twenty years of passion and determination to rediscover her original sailing capabilities and the charm of her characteristic outline.

Among the amazing stories of traditional yachting, Skal doubtlessly takes the prize for resurrection. This 16m gaff cutter, designed in 1930 by the American architect Philip Rodes, successfully participated in two transatlantic races, before gradually losing her original lines in the UK as she passed from one owner to the next. Purchased by her current owner in 2003, the boat suffered a major peril of the sea during a delivery trip to France, which resulted in her sinking following an engine failure off the Raz Blanchard. The Stagnol yard was then contacted to organise her refloating by the SNSM (the French equivalent of the RNLI) and divers from BSM29. It was a miracle that the boat could be rescued in this way. The disaster seriously damaged the structure, but extensive and delicate restoration work enabled her to be returned to her original configuration.

Added to this, the 2010 Les Voiles event is likely to see the arrival on Saint Tropez’ race zone of sailing schooner Atlantic, the replica of Charlie Barr’s famous 70 m schooner. From the moment she was launched in the United States in 1903, the yacht from the New York Yacht Club was noted for her striking beauty and speed, which she demonstrated during her first sea trials by reaching 20 knots. At that time nobody could have guessed that, just two years later, she would set a record for traversing the North Atlantic which was to remain unbeaten for nearly a century. The replica of Atlantic was launched in March 2009 at the Van Der Graaf yard in Holland, after a two year build, before being rigged in La Rochelle. This year will mark her very first season in the Mediterranean.

All the traditional yachts measuring over 16 metres will, for the fifth year running, be eligible for the Rolex Trophy, which was won in 2008 and 2009 by the very elegant New York 40 Bermudan Cutter, sailing yacht Rowdy.

SAIL Amsterdam attracts Tall ships from around the world.

August 23, 2010

SAIL Amsterdam is a large maritime event that takes place every five years in the port area to the east and the north of the city. The five-day event was first held in 1975 as part of the celebrations marking the 700th anniversary of the establishment of Amsterdam. Sail Amsterdam 2010 is the eighth time the maritime extravaganza has taken place. Sail Amsterdam 2010 began on Thursday 19 August with the Sail-in parade and ended on Monday the 23rd with the Sail-out.

SAIL’s main attraction consisted of the impressive tall ships and the large fleet accompanying them. The SAIL-IN Parade set off on 19 August around 10:00 a.m. from IJmuiden and began arriving at 12:00 p.m. in the IJ harbour in Amsterdam. The tall ships were escorted by thousands of boats during their crossing of the North Sea Canal.

Tall ships from dozens of countries have participated in SAIL Amsterdam 2010. Striking newcomers include the Götheborg from Sweden and the Dhow Theyab from the United Arab Emirates. The Stad Amsterdam, which retraced the route of Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle, moored along the quay during SAIL.
Among others, the following tall ships from the A class tok part in the SAIL-IN: Amerigo Vespucci (Italy), Dar Mlodziezy (Poland), Dewaruci (Indonesia), Dhow Theyab (United Arab Emirates), Gloria (Colombia), Götheborg (Sweden), Grossherzogin Elisabeth (Germany), HMS Gladan (Sweden), HMS Falken (Sweden), Iskra (Poland), Kaliakra (Bulgaria), Kruzenshtern (Russia), Loa (Denmark), Mir (Russia), Pelican of London (England), Pogoria (Poland), Sedov (Russia), Shabab Oman (Oman), Shtandart (Russai), Sørlandet (Norway), Stavros S Niarchos (England) and Thor Heyerdahl (Germany). The Stad Amsterdam clipper sailed at the front the parade.

From historical to modern

In addition to the renowned tall ships, a unique collection of about 500 ships from the Dutch sailing heritage fleet, naval ships, various replicas and modern ships moored in and around the IJ river. Other nautical highlights included the Ceremonial Salute, the Naval Review, the safety and rescue demonstrations by the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM) and the Royal Netherlands Navy, the so-called ‘Pieremachocheltocht’ involving rowboats decked out in carnival fashion, the Crew Parade through the city centre, the Aquacorso, the salute to the tall ships from approximately 1,300 canoers and rowers and the races in the SAILSation area.

New: SAILSation

New to SAIL was SAILSation, the racing area on the north side of the KNSM island where various types of boats participated. Unique races between ‘skutsjes’, Frisian sailing boats, took place on Friday and during the weekend on the IJ river. This was the first time that these ships were seen in racing form on the IJ.

New: Entertainment on tall ships and SAIL Sing-Along

For the first time at SAIL, there was  entertainment on the decks of the tall ships. Ensembles, storytellers and performances enriched the nautical atmosphere. The daily SAIL Sing-Along on the main stage at the head of Java island was highly enjoyable. This event featured various shanty choirs, supported by an orchestra, singing well-known songs of the sea.

Focal point: The ING Pirate Island

This edition of SAIL  focused extra attention on children aged 6 to 12 and young people aged 15 to 25. For children, the Bogortuin garden at the beginning of Java island was a  not to be missed event. At the Province of Noord-Holland Children’s Stage, the programme featured the dazzling shows of Kapitein Winokio in which the children themselves could play a role. On the water, main sponsor ING created the ING Pirate Island, the focal point of SAIL 2010. During the day it was a veritable adventure paradise for children, while in the evenings it served as a fantastic and breathtaking backdrop for the ‘pirate party’. In the nearby Aquarena, children were able to learn how to sail, water-ski and build rafts.

31st Annual Panerai Classic Yacht Regatta sails into Newport

August 23, 2010

The Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge returns to Newport, RI, for the final leg of the American circuit with the Museum of Yachting (MoY) Classic Yacht Regatta on September 4th and 5th. The highly anticipated annual event, sponsored by Panerai and presented by Land Rover, brings enthusiastic vintage and classic yacht owners and skippers to Narragansett Bay for what promises to be one the most exciting classic yacht regattas ever held in the U.S. With the addition of the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta in Marblehead, MA, this challenge completes the first-ever vintage and classic racing circuit for North America with Nantucket in mid-August and Newport as the final stop. To mark the 31st running of this classic Newport event, regatta organizers, Panerai and Land Rover have included events so Rhode Islanders, Newport visitors, and other classic-boat enthusiasts can enjoy the regatta’s festivities. On Friday night, September 3rd, Panerai will kick off the weekend with a festive opening night celebration at the MoY’s waterfront home at Fort Adams State Park.

For many – legendary racers to young dinghy sailors, summer beachgoers and wooden-yacht enthusiasts – the end of summer is marked by this collection of events which begins on Friday, September 3rd and culminates in the celebrated MoY Classic Yacht Regatta Awards Party on Sunday, September 5th.  Classic-boat enthusiasts are invited to join the international crowd of owners and crews who are traveling from ports throughout the United States and Europe to compete at the acclaimed regatta. Organizing Authority Sail Newport will run two days of racing, starting on Saturday and concluding Sunday afternoon, where the racing fleet will again mix restored classics with “spirit of tradition” yachts of contemporary build and classic styling.  Sunday morning brings a highlight of the event for both participating crews and the public when the regatta’s annual Classic Yacht Parade turns the waters off Newport into a panorama of majestic classics, historic one-designs, and classic powerboats.  The fleet will assemble and trace a parade course around the harbor before heading to the parade’s endpoint in the waters surrounding the MoY and Fort Adams State Park.  The regatta’s winning yacht captain will take home a limited edition 2010 edition of the Panerai Radiomir Regatta 1/8th Second Titanio – 47 mm watch, which is a split-second foudroyante chronograph, which also features a scale for calculating boat speed in knots.  This is a highly specialized model, and therefore a real sailor’s instrument, not just by name, but also due to its technical content.

For more than 25 years, the MoY has worked to preserve the culture and heritage of yachting.  Situated in one of New England’s most beautiful seaside locales, the Museum celebrates the traditions of yachting through the presentation of informative exhibits and educational programming.  In 2007, the Museum converged with the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS), located across Newport Harbor.  Together, these two organizations are creating a rich educational living-heritage experience by coordinating exhibits, events, and restoration projects.  Sail Newport, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1983 after the loss of the America’s Cup catalyzed the sailing community to attract more sailing events to Newport. Over 25 years later, Sail Newport is a thriving sailing center located in Fort Adams State Park.  Sail Newport has a wide variety of sailing programs including learn-to-sail programs, racing clinics, and advanced classes for youth and adults.

This year, Officine Panerai celebrates its sixth year as sponsor of this prestigious Classic Yachts Challenge yachting circuit, a partnership that is certain to continue in the future, due to the profound values shared, the linkage with the sea, beauty, history, craftsmanship and age-old skill and tradition.  Other PCYC regattas include the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta (April 15th – 20th), British Classic Yacht Club Cowes Regatta (July 17th – 24th) in Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK and the Mediterranean Circuit, encompassing: Les Voiles d’Antibes (June 2nd – 6th), in Antibes, France; Copa Del Ray in Minorca, Spain (August 25th – 29th), Vele d’epoca di Imperia in Italy (September 8th – 12th) and the Regates Royales in Cannes, France (September 22nd – 25th).

The high standards of quality and great reliability that have contributed so much to the Royal Italian Navy reflect Panerai’s dedication to research, innovation and tradition.  Similarly, every classic yacht is a symbol of the age-old art of sailing, handed down through generations. It is therefore an ideal counterpart to the world of high quality watch making, where the emphasis on tradition and quality are not the result of good fortune, but the outcome of persistence and longevity.

August 22, 2010

Enjoy four days of classic yacht racing, steamboats, vintage and classic car displays, from Friday 27 August to Monday 30 August at the National Trust’s magnificent Crom Estate, Upper Lough Erne, Co. Fermanagh.

The Waterways Ireland Lough Erne Classic Yacht Regatta 2010

The Waterways Ireland Lough Erne Classic Yacht Regatta 2010

Supported by Waterways Ireland and organised by the Lough Erne Classic Yacht Association (www.classicsailireland.com), the Waterways Ireland Classic Yacht Regatta promises to be a great weekend for yachting enthusiasts and families alike, with yachts visiting from all over Ireland and the UK.  Not since 1913 when Crom was the social hub, and centre of the inland yachting world will there been such an gathering of classic craft.

Up to 100 classic sail and steam yachts are expected to fill the bays around Crom, and likely to be joined by many other visitors on cruisers converging from across the Shannon-Erne system. While classic yachts will take pride of place at this event the whole of Crom estate will be alive with activity as music, vintage cars and live demonstrations of steam powered Edwardian vessels add to the range of attractions on offer.

Commenting on the yachting extravaganza Paul Louden-Brown, Chairman, Lough Erne Classic Yacht Association said “We have had an amazing uptake in the number and quality of historic yachts booking to race at Crom.  One of the many highlights of the bank holiday weekend activity is a series of races between two of Linton Hope’s one-designs. The Broad’s Brown Boats and Fairy Class Yachts from Lough Erne Yacht Club and the Royal North of Ireland Yacht Club, will compete for a special challenge trophy.  This will be the first time these fleets have raced against each other.

Lough Erne Yacht Club was founded in 1837 at Crom, and the waters surrounding the castle and nearby estates are where some of the most technically innovative and historically important yachts were built and raced, many of them by the leading designers of the day like Fife, Watson, Mylne and Payne. For 80 years the leading families of the Upper Lough raced their yachts in fierce competition for magnificent silver trophy cups but all this ended with the beginning of the world war. Once again, in August 2010, yachts will race on these historic waters.”

Martin Dennany, Director of Marketing & Communications, Waterways Ireland added “We are delighted to sponsor this magnificent event combining both water and land based activities. This event will highlight the beauty of Lough Erne and the Crom Estate and encourage more people to visit this beautiful spot. For the first time ever these historic crafts will race against each other and I am sure this event will be a wonderful family event, so Crom Estate is the place to be from 27th to the 30th August.”

Sailing schooner ATLANTIC – Profile of the entrepreneur Ed Kastelein

August 09, 2010

From his mother’s side Dutchman Ed Kastelein (60) is a descendant of the founders of the Holland-America Line shipping company, while his father’s family were fishermen for centuries. Seafaring is his nature. Only twelve years old he built his first canoe from old barn planks and on his fourteenth he was sailing a 12m² Sharpie. Several Dutch BM-sloops followed and at the age of sixteen he was restoring sailing boats in his spare time.

Entrepreneur Ed Kastelein - Photo Credit Kees Stuip

Entrepreneur Ed Kastelein - Photo Credit Kees Stuip

He established a flourishing property development company focussing on high quality restaurants and café’s in the Rotterdam area. And some 30 years ago he chose to concentrate on sailing only. He bought the 16 meter wooden Colin Archer Gaff Ketch Zeeland, and chartered her for three years across the Mediterranean. He owned the Lunstroo designed 31 meter schooner Borkumriff,  built for Baron William Von Fink in 1980. In 1987 he acquired the yawl, sailing yacht Aile Blanche and subsequently he owned the maxi-racer Ondine and the 1936 Alfred Mylne designed sailing yacht Thendara, until the experience he had gained on and off the water made him realise that building new was not necessarily more expensive than restoring.

Kastelein had fallen in love with the lines of Zaca, owned by actor Errol Flynn. The wooden yacht was lying in a far state of decomposition in the south of France and it seemed impossible to save her. He decided to commission a look-alike, the 38 meter Grand Banks schooner  Zaca a te Moana, launched in 1992. Not only does he have an insatiable appetite for sleek classical lines, he also has a remarkable penchant for drama. The inspiration of the 42 meter racing schooner Eleonora E, launched in 2001, was the Nat Herreshoff designed Westward, which was not devoid of drama too. Under her last owner, Mr. T.B. Davis from Jersey, the schooner participated in almost all major races sailed after World War I, and won most. But having survived the second World War, funds were scarce and Mr Davis’ will stipulated that Westward was to be scuttled in The Channel in case his heirs would not have the means to maintain her properly. And sadly thus it happened. On July 15th 1947 she was blown up by explosives and sank shortly after.

Of course the story of the sailing yacht ATLANTIC is the most famous. The 100 years old transatlantic regatta record for mono hulls, set by Charlie Barr and his crew in 1905 has made the yacht a myth. She certainly is one of the most loveliest and fastest yachts ever built and the gracile three masted silhouette is still on everybody’s retina.

Kastelein has managed the entire ambitious project solely. He has gathered copies of dozens of drawings of the original ATLANTIC from various archives in the USA. And he has studied hundreds of images of the original that have been saved. Unfortunately very little drawings of the interior have been preserved, but with the help of photographs Kastelein has been able to copy the  colonial style and atmosphere which characterized the mother yacht. For the equipment like anchor, bollards, hawse-hoses, stanchions, belaying pins and even the ensign-pole support, Kastelein will draw on his extremely vast experience with Eleonora and have new casting patterns custom manufactured.

Schooner ATLANTIC is built for luxury charter purposes and as such she will participate in most classical boat races, like the famous Voiles de Saint Tropez. As the largest classical racing schooner ever rebuilt, she will generate waves of admiration wherever she sails. Kastelein has succeeded again to revive sailing history thanks to his life-long passion and his dedicated and experienced build team. When asked what drives him to undertake a challenge of this size the answer is: “Hoist and set sail as the yacht takes to the sea makes a dream come through”.

The 2010 Sailing yacht Atlantic is magnificent replica of the 1903 William Gardner designed three-masted sailing schooner Atlantic, owned by Ed Kastelein. The 1903 sailing schooner was a long time World record holder for the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean under sail in 1905, having sailed 3006 miles in twelve days, four hours, one minute and nine seconds, thus winning the Kaiser’s Cup from New York to The Lizard. The record held firm for almost a century, when it was broken in 1998. It is the longest standing speed record in the Yachting History.

The schooner Atlantic was the quintessential cruiser – racer. She was able to do 17 knots on her steam engine of 400hp, weighing 30 tons including boiler, exclusive fuel. The electricity was provided by two generators. She had heating, refrigeration, and water heaters. The lobby was executed in marble and the interior was fitted out with the finest mahogany panelling. There were large and luxurious tiled bathrooms (with bath tub) and a large galley.

The Owner, Ed Kastelein is the man responsible for the recreation of this wonderful new schooner Atlantic, and is also behind such projects as the sailing yacht Thendara, sailing yacht Aile Blanche, sailing yacht Borkumriff, sailing yacht Zaca a te Moana and most recently the Herreshoff racing schooner Eleonora E.  The Dutch Van der Graaf yard first launched the Sailing Yacht Atlantic  in 2008. Following her launch,  she underwent an extensive programme of fitting out. 2009 saw the assembly of her three masts, with a height of 45 metres, supporting 1700m² of sails. Her raven black high gloss hull reflects the ripples of the water and one glance at the three towering masts, instantly give the sense of power that this mighty yacht Atlantic has.

Sailing schooner Atlantic is the largest classic sailing schooner ever created, measuring 185 feet (56 metres) over deck and with the bowsprit to boom length of 227 feet (69 metres). Her graceful sheerline and long overhangs accentuate her grace while her waterline length of 42 meters and narrow beam are a promise for unmatched speed under sail.

Finally, on June 23rd 2010, sailing schooner Atlantic sailed out to the sea. Three years after her keel was laid she was ready and eager to go.  The Owner, Ed Kastelein, saw his long term dream come true, as he witnesses his family, guest and crew step on board of Atlantic yacht. The weather for her launch was perfect, with gentle northerly breeze blowing.
