Bellingham Marine is delighted to report that the new terminal for Flagship Cruises situated next to Broadway Pier in downtown San Diego, California, has been successfully completed. On October 1st, Flagship’s luxury fleet of vessels docked at their new home for the first time.

The new terminal was built to coincide with the North Embarcadero Visionary Plan (NEVP), a redevelopment and rejuvenation plan for San Diego’s downtown waterfront.

Eric Noegel, Manager of Project Development for Bellingham Marine’s SW Division said, “The new Flagship terminal is a clear example of the level of customization that can go into a project.”

Noegel added, “There were a number of factors that drove the design and execution of the Flagship facility including the site’s exposure to waves, the Port of San Diego’s NEVP redevelopment plans adjacent to the site, the needs of the large vessels docking at the terminal, and the heavy foot traffic on the docks.”

The floating terminal, shaped in a U, features oversized concrete docks with steel wide flange beam walers specially designed for a 3 foot wave environment, heavy duty ocean guard fenders to protect the boats from direct contact with the steel walers, a floating building constructed on the docks used for storage, extra-wide clear walkways to accommodate large crowds and covered gangways with LED rope lighting for user comfort.

All power, water and pumpout connection points on the docks are concealed below the surface of the deck to keep walkways and provisioning areas free and clear of obstacles and equipment.

Brad Engel, Vice President for Flagship Cruises, said “We appreciated the knowledge and expertise Bellingham Marine brought to the project.  We had a number of custom elements designed into the dock system and they were integrated perfectly. As issues arose we were able to work through them quickly and efficiently and the end result is a first class facility on San Diego bay.”

As the world’s leading marina design-build construction company, Bellingham Marine produces Unifloat® concrete floating dock systems as well as timber and metal frame systems. The company also produces Unistack® dry stack systems for marinas worldwide.
