The Carib Indians refer to this island paradise as Waitukubuli. Dominica is a treasure trove of Mother Nature’s wonders, and about two thirds of its territory is covered by dense forest, which is teeming with over 1,500 plant and animal species. The island is studded with majestic waterfall, streams, lakes and rivers, and these tributaries are fed by sufficient precipitation each year. It prides itself on its Morne Trois Pitons National Park, the first and the only natural park in eastern Caribbean declared as a world heritage site by UNESCO. It is one of the remaining two islands in the region that is populated by Carib Indians.

Among the leading destinations in the Caribbean, Dominica is the prime choice when it comes to ecotourism. Yacht charterers and tourists will be treated with a wide range of natural wonders on both on sea and on land. Dominica is every bit the ideal destination for scuba divers and rock climbers and those who just want to experience and enjoy a broad range of outdoor activities and adventures.

Places to See and Things to Do in Dominica

Dominica is sometimes referred to by seasoned sailors and tourists as Caribbean’s “nature island.” It boasts of a topography that is distinctively volcanic in origin. The island is studded with volcanic peaks, with slopes that are covered with lush green vegetation. Dominica is as close as you can get to the wildest region of the Caribbean. This makes the island as the wonderland for canyoners, mountain and rock climbers, hikers and nature lovers. Being a region that is considered volcanically active, its terrain features searing lava and pyroclastic flow underneath the rock’s thin crust.

One of the largest and the most picturesque lakes in Dominica is Boling Lake. This lake is teeming with rock deposits and other pyroclastic materials form past volcanic activities.

Eco-tours in the island would normally include an excursion to the Boiling Lake. This exciting hiking trail brings you to the Titou Gorge, a lava-carved natural wonder that is teeming with tree monkeys and parrots. The adventurous souls can join ATV tours and Zip-lining activities during their swing through this natural oasis.

Dominica is also an ideal destination for beach lovers. It boasts of several pristine and majestic beach resorts. There are over 30 sites off the Dominica coast that are perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving. Divers can discover and enjoy the rich marine life in this part of the Caribbean or sample the undersea volcanic vents. Whale watching and dolphin watching are also the popular fare of yacht charterers who are spending their holiday vacation in the idyllic island of Dominica.

Dominica also has a claim to fame in the movie industry. Hampstead Beach in Dominica, W.I is one of the beaches where Pirates of the Caribbean II & III were filmed which is an attraction for many while cruising Dominica on their luxury yacht charter.
