Ile de Porquerolles Yacht Charter, French Riviera

Not far from St Tropez is the Ile de Porquerolles, a touch of paradise on the Cote d’Azur. It’s a treasure of the Mediterranean and one that is usually uncrowded. Head past the Ile du Levant and Port-Cros from the Gulf of St Tropez and you will come to the Ile de Porquerolles, the largest of the three islands in the Hyeres Gulf. The islands are known as the Jewels of the Mediterranean with Porquerolles being one of the most beautiful.

The island is only about 20 sq kilometres with a Michelin-starred restaurant L’Olivier in Le Mas du Langoustier, which is a traditional hotel. Notre Dame is a beautiful beach here and popular with superyachts, it’s also only an hour’s walk from the ferry port, allowing you to take in the sights as you go to end with a rest on this soft sandy beach, where your superyacht crew can pick you up by tender.

The colour of the sea aroundthe protected island of Porquerolles is startling: It changes from bright turquoise to an amazing sapphire blue. The bays offer good anchorages too for the perfect place to spend the evening before continuing on your adventure. Without any cars on the island, Porquerolles is a very peaceful, tranquil island that will take you back in time. The local people play the bowling game of petanque in the bougainvillea and oleander-adorned village square of Place Armes. Visitors love to sip pastis and watch these intriguing bowling games as they relax.

Although the island is only 7km long and 3km wide it has a spectacular landscape dotted with creeks, plains, forests and cliffs. This diversity makes the area perfect for outdoor activities like horse-riding, mountain-biking or hiking, while water sport enthusiasts can wind surf, fish or do a little diving.

Sun-kissed white sandy beaches are scented with the eucalyptus and pine trees all around. The Plage Notre Dame is popular with superyacht owners and is a 60-minute walk or a 20-minute cycle ride from the port. The neighbouring beaches of Plage d’Argent and La Courtade are just as beautiful, so plenty to choose from.

The north coast is gentle while the south coast has remarkable vertical cliffs that rise up out of the sea. These provide unbelievable views of many rocky points, gorges, hills, headlands and the steep-walled, narrow inlets that are called calanques. There’s also a lighthouse here which offers 360 degree views of the entire island.

Le Mas du Langoustier is a most luxurious and isolated hotel in the South of France. It’s situated among eucalyptus and pine trees on the west coast, full of Provencal charm and furnished with beautiful antiques. Le Fort du Grand Langoustier faces the hotel and on either side of the fort are beaches called La Plage Blanche and La Plage Noire: White and black beaches. Dine at the fine restaurant that serves Provencal and Mediterranean cuisine then take a walk at sunset to watch how island life changes between day and night.

The Botanique National de Porquerolles and the Park National de Port-Cros protect the island, the environment including its heritage. This carefully preserved natural environment will be a draw for hikers, photographers and birdwatchers in the group, and visitors will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the island for many years to come with the hard work that goes into its preservation.
